I have another thread going that's a bit more specific, but I'll ask here anyways.

What is the best fixed blade for work, general utility, and possibly innawoodsing?
I like the SOG Tech Bowie but it's been forever since I've bought a knife and don't know what's good anymore.

Yeah, I've been working on it a lot. So I figured once I'm happy with it I would post it more, but it's a project and I don't have that much time for it.

It's a nice knife, but it's almost stupid thick behind the edge, to the point where it bounces off everything put really soft wood.

I convex and lengthened the bevel, but I was still not impressed. So now I am thinning the grind, and ultimately I'm going to finish it with a mirror polish on the grind and edge. Think I may go back to a "v' bevel as well, since I got a .25" adapter for my Wicked Edge.

Most people don't.

Most people do however have use for a pocket clip and a thumb stud. That's why those features are found on everything from $20 Chinese disposables to knives that cost 10x as much.

I see those knives as luxury items, and that's ok, everyone does as they please with their money.

I only carry a knife while camping, or going to the countryside with friends, and I use mostly for food prep, that's what the Opinel is for.

I also carry a chink knife (Sanrenmu 7010) on my fishing bag, I don't care if rusts or gets lost.
>>
>>33620010
CRKT makes some really cool knives, a lot of bad, but a lot of good as well. They can be hit or miss, but when they are a hit, they are great for the money.

Opinels are amazing slicers because of their very thin blade stock, and they are very sheeple friendly. I keep my No.9 carbon in my bag for food prep and "sanitary" tasks. Thinking I'll get a No.8 Stainless to replace it.

But no, the term "best" is not applicable unless you set very particular standards, this really goes for anything, there has to be parameters set.
>>
>>33619441

Can somebody give some tips or suggestions on my next buy?

I'm thinking of getting either a Benchmade Osborne, or a Benchmade Griptilian (both would be chosen with no serrations, and either a drop point or sheep foot blade, probably the latter). The Osborne is quite a bit more expensive, but I'm intending on my next purchase being expected to last me a good many years until I get another folder, so I am willing to reason with the price a bit if it means that the quality will last. I currently use a Spyderco Tenacious for odd work and just about everything, with the exception of heavy duty outdoors work (which I use a fixed blade for).

The knives themselves weren't the point, the features that they included were.

Pocket clips and methods of opening knives one handed are so common that the only folding knife posted ITT without at least one of those features is the Opinel.

You don't think spyderco pm2 is overpriced? What makes the PM2 any improvement over a similar looking and sized knife, like the tenacious, besides the different blade steel? I have looked into it, but am not convinced... yet.

All make for a more usable knife, especially with gloves. Compression lock is fun. Comes in all types of awesome steels. The s35vn and s110vn especially. It's the perfect working knife but might be too big for your EDC.

Realsteel buyer here, knife is good

Everythign abotu it is good, except for the handles, instead of yoru spyderco-style g10/carbon laminate that has some texture for just a bit of grip, it's completely polished surface on the handle scales, making it slippery as all hell. But otherwise it's pretty good, exceptionally sharp, everything works and the g10 versions have at least soem texture to the handle scales so I bet that it would be absolutely amazing if I went with that.

But yeah I expected the handle scales to be like those on Gayle Bradley but instead i got slippery slide
>>
>>33622327
CRKTs are deffinetly overpriced for the steels they use for their knives. Either lower your prices or upgrade the steel from entry level ones.
>>
>>33622031
2 questions:

Why is a compression lock any special? All I could dig up on it was that it's just a backwards liner lock.

Is there any benefit to having a large folding knife over a similarly sized fixed blade? (I think not)

So far I'm interested in these models:

Jettison 6130
Amicus 5441

Suggestions?

Also keep in mind that I have to get it shipped to Spain and most likely I'll get jewed on shipping, these ones come with free delivery on eBay.

I personally do not like the Griptilian, but the 940 is a great knife. I've handled and sharpened a few, including a 940-1. If you can swing it, I would go for that.

But, Benchmade is kind of iffy right now with their quality control. And as a tool, Benchmade has never been that great of a value, they are a bit on the overpriced side for what you get. Would you consider knives from other companies? Like the ZT 0808 is a great knife, and similar to the 940, around the same price. (pic related)

>>
>>33622652
Ak bayos suck ass holes if you want something sharp. Only good as a stabbing knife or a wire cutter.

The metal is so soft you can't get a decent edge.
>>
>>33619441
Holy shit, i have one of those
>>
>>33622390
The conpression lock is stronger and when gripping it is much less likely for you to disengage it. You also naturally disengage it with your finger completely out of the path of the blade allowing you to easily flip it open and close safely. That is pretty fun.

A similar sized fixed blade will have a smaller blade than a folder. So that's the downside.
>>
>>33622914
Stonger than what exactly?the triad lock?the axis lock?all those different versions with different colors and blade steels are sprint runs, limited numbers are made.if anything those are meant for collecting.
>>
Took apart my deli4 that I bought used 2 threads ago, cleaned it and oiled it up with some paraffin oil (not falling for the meme oils). It was easy for me, read it that most people suffer with this knife so idk. It was worth it tho, now I can flick it as easy as I could my PM2.

If I'm being honest, my rates + shipping, probably not worth it for you. Honestly, for most people, it is better to invest money into learning how to sharpen and a set up, than sending your knives out. I've sent a knife or two out in the past, just too see how my edges compare with others.

But if you really want to, sure, I can give you a temp email to communicate details.

>>33622914
>>33623003
I'm willing to say it's not as strong as a Tri-ad, by a decent margin. But it's still a good lock, it's convenient, and fun to play with, and it's strong enough. My whole take on lock strength is that strong enough is good enough. I don't need my folders to be fixed blade strong, because I use them as folders. And if you are putting significant load or shock on the spine of a folder, you are doing something stupid anyway.

Not to say I do not appreciate the engineering that goes into make a very strong lock that is still easy to use. That is design elegance.

>>33622441

Alright now that I have a few minutes, here are the particulars. I think I got everything, but I may have forgotten some stuff. Not everything listed is in pic related.

The Jig;
-Generation 1 base plate (as in Pro pack 1&2)
-Paper stone base
-Generation 2 arms and rails
-Generation 3 jaw, with .25" adapter

Stones:
Diamond; 50, 80, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000
Ceramic; 1,200 & 1,600
Strops (leather); 5 & 3.5 micron

Extras that I use;
-Angle cube
-ceramic erasers
-few neodymium magnets from hard drives to catch dust
-a lot of Painters tape
-a lot of paper towels
-Isopropyl alcohol (for strops)

Things I'm planing to get:
- The finer ceramics
-balsa wood strops (5 & 3.5 micron)
-1 & .5 micron leather strops
- a Pelican (probably 1560) to carry it all

And the WE is not my only equipment, I also have a Sharpmaker, an almost complete free hand set up (100 to 8,000 grit), and a 1x30 belt sander for larger blades.

I've wondered that before as well. I figured they would not bring a design across brands... But they brought the ZT 0770 design to Kershaw this year, so maybe.

There are some pretty high end Skylines though. Like the Premium Skyline from BladeHQ (pic related), it's Carbon Fiber handles and s30v blade. Still the same pivot and frame design though. I'm not sure if the CF is smother than G-10 or something, but it flips much better than any other Skyline I've handled (stock).

So I have a combination complaint/praise for my Griptilian.
>complaint
The Axis Lock came unlocked under lateral prying and it closed on my hand gently
>praise
Despite me having abused the shit out of this knife for the better part of a year it was still sharp enough to cut through a buffalo hide work glove, cut2 of my fingers to the bone, notch the bone on my index finger, and do it all painlessly and with so little pressure that even though it happened slowly I didn't realize it.

Been using a pocket knife every day for 35 years and have never had a lock fail on me before. That's also only the second time in my entire life I've cut myself with an actual knife, with the first time being when I was 8.

I also don't really understand how ANY form of lock can come unlocked when you're not even putting any pressure on the spine. And yes I'm 100% positive I did not accidentally disengage it myself, my hand was way too far back on it.
>>
>>33624351

Humongous yeah, mallninja not so much. Closest would be their emerson designs, and that's not really ZT's fault. Cold Steel is really the only company that really earns the shit it gets for putting out mall crawler and meme designs left and right while occasionally letting slip a legitimately good knife.

I have 1 microtech OTF, I can't afford the 3 or 400 he has. It is a cool knife but like >>33624705 said, I can open some manuals faster and gunk in the knife can hinder its use unless it is cleaned.

I literally just looked. There were exactly 9 knives out of their current catalog that meet none of the aforementioned criteria, out of the 53 products in it. Maybe another 3 that implement 1 or 2 "complaint" features well enough to get a pass.

I mean for fuck's sake they have THREE different tactical pens. Pens alone are 6% of their catalog.

>>33624820
"because I like it" works for me I guess, just too many people try to pass it off as THE GRATESTEST THANG EVAR or as a legit fighting knife.
>there are a lot of American OTF makers friend
Granted I don't do a ton of research on OTF's because I *dont* like them, but I'm aware of Microtech and BM's Infidel as being US-made, and...that's it. Meanwhile there's about 400 different Chinese companies selling OTF's on Amazon alone.
>>
>>33624856
Agreed.

I just want a good, solid wharncliffe knife. I love the blade design and the 0392's handle design is fucking perfect for it.
>>
>>33624902
You can "fight" with these. They are tougher than you think.
Although I would advise a fixed blade for such a purpose.
It's totally ok if you don't like them. They aren't for everyone and that is perfectly ok.
Amazon has a lot of garbage knives on it in the OTF category. It seems to me that they remove automatic knives as they pop up which means authentic storefronts stop trying, but dickhead scalpers keep trying to slip by
>>
>>33624869

If I got a halo I would keep that in a safe. My ultratech already has scratches on it just after few times of carrying it, I couldn't imagine scratching a knife 3 - 4x more expensive (plus it is a little too big for me to EDC anyway). I like the Halos but they are out of my price range for what I want to pay for a knife right now.

Their vintage blades are some of my personal faves
>>
>>33624901
>Like from a tolerance standpoint or a wear standpoint?

Both, but my main issue is when I got the Microtech it had some anodizing issues in that I could see a faint line on the handle that was a slightly different color compared to the rest of the handle. I wiped it down and put some rem oil on the handle and it decreased the visibility of the off-anodized line significantly.
>>
>>33624809
>how does the phrase "super steel" make something mallninja?
The same way the overuse of the word "tactical" and "sniper" do--misleading if not outright false advertising in an attempt to sucker stupid people into buying their products.

Is ZT particularly BAD about it? Fuck no. Especially when a lot of their knife blades live up to their advertising. But it is present, and I'm kinda sick of seeing it on literally every knife maker's website.

Month/Year of the blade?
It does happen. A big issue is the aluminum they get for the handles, any slight imperfection will cause that issue you have right there.

It is not very apparent unless you tilt the knife under bright light. I would send it in but I don't want to go through the wait and the hassle for a knife that deploys flawlessly and hasn't once misfired since I bought it. Mechanically it is perfect and the blade is sharp.

I actually like how this project turned out (Turns out Tony really liked Rambo when he was younger)
So he made a "Rambo" OTF
There is also a fixed blade version
>>
>>33624940
I can "fight" with a Buck 110 too, with roughly the same outcome. Doesn't make that design any better at it.
>more people have probably been knifed with a 110 than any other single folding knife in history, due to its age and rampant popularity
Totally agree, fixed blade is the best for fighting. However, it takes a very expensive semicustom or limited production OTF to match the lock strength of a $30 Gerber/Kershaw/Buck.

I suppose there's at least some argument for the side-opening automatics, since they have a stronger lock than an OTF, but at that point you're really not gaining anything over an assisted opener other than a unique/"cool" mechanism.

tonymt_torture3.jpg

>>33625097
I would be prepared to argue you get a significantly safer mechanism.
If the lock breaks on an OTF, the blade just slides back into the handle.
You break a lock on a folding knife and you could lose fingers.
Plus, you don't have to change your grip at all to move your fingers out of the way when opening or closing.
No one wins knife fights.
>>
>>33625221
If you're fighting with a knife it doesn't really matter if you lose a finger or 3 if the lock breaks, because the guy you're fighting fucking kills you because you have a nonfunctional knife.

At least with a side-opener it will still somewhat stay open.

You realize all belligerents in a knife fight lose right?
OTF's will stay "somewhat open" as well. All depends on what breaks, and how you are using the knife.
I broke this Halo on purpose/removed the spring, and used it as a gravity knife to prove a point.
This argument is a waste of time for both of us

Any half way decent knife is not going to fail. Honestly I think the best folding "fighting knife", as big as a meme as that whole concept is, is the Cold Steel XL Espada, followed by the Large Espada, XL Talwar, Rajah II, ect... All the Cold Steel mega folders with a wave. Because whats better at being a meme purpose knife than a meme knife.

Why?
-Size, bigger the better. I've heard some people say "a few inches dose not matter", okay I guess that's why swords and pole arms were used, I call crap on that. If I had to use a knife to defend my self, I want every inch I can get.

-Wave function, it's faster than any automatic, it's faster than some fixed blades depending on the sheath. But fastness maybe a meme, because in a lot of self defense situations I can think of, I would want to get the knife out quietly with out them noticing.

-lock strength. Good enough is good enough, and the Tri-ad is more than good enough.

No, the difference in steel between a Tenacious and PM2 is huge. 8cr13mov is essentially a chinese pot steel recipe. S30V is a medium-end stainless steel, and one of the best all-around steels without going into "super steel." There's also the lock type, the compression lock allows for smoother action and doesn't place your fingers in the path of the blade when closing. The PM2 has a totally fair retail price

Generally speaking ankle knives are about concealability, so much so that you sacrifice being able to quickly or discretely draw the knife. I kept my pocket knife clipped to my boot in high school so I wouldn't get caught with it but moved it to my pocket as soon as I was on the bus because if people decided to hassle me on the way home, which happened fairly often after Katrina pushed a certain demographic inland, putting my hand on my pocket in a way that made it obvious that I had a knife usually made them leave me alone. I actually had to pull it out once but thankfully the balsero fucked off and nothing came of that.

So the question that needs to be answered here is what you plan to do with the knife. If you absolutely need to conceal it for some reason and can't do so under a jacket or such then ankle carry isn't such a terrible idea. If it's for general use then ankle carry is plain dumb LARP shit.

What you plan to do with the knife will not only inform how you carry a knife but also what knife you get. Unless you want it specifically for stabbing people then pretty much any bayonet is going to be a shit knife, not to mention they'll also often have a bulky hand and/or barrel ring and, especially in the case of the AK bayonet, a bulky sheath. Pic related is a knife that Scots keep tucked in their socks, which is feasible with a kilt.

Alright.
1. I like them. Was associated with the company back in the 90's and fell in love with the designs. Loved the way the company started and Tony's approach during the time. He wanted to be the best at everything (even had titanium business cards!)
2. Pretty good. Some lemons get through but I get that with every brand. The only issue I ever had was with anodizing and that is just because I have so many of them. (various shades of green for the same knife for instance) but Geissele has the same issues so I am ok with that.
3 I don't pay that much. And there is a LOT more work that goes into a Troodon than an ultratech. And Troodons sell for $350 retail (less second hand) While combat troodons are $450 or so. What makes a Scar 17 cost more than a Scar 16? Similar principles.
4 He started out as one of the best people I have met in this industry, but things have a way of changing. Would rather not get into it too much.

When buying entry level or budget knives (30 bucks or less), why should I bought something from a known brand instead of going chink?

I've been doing some research and they use materials or similar quality and some of them are rumored to make knives for american companies.

If that's your sole reason for disliking him then you are indeed poor, mad, and jealous.

Even when I had money I couldn't afford the shit that he does and even if I could he doesn't even have the same taste in knives that I do. These are not reasons to hate him. At least he's not like that dumbass Polack who can't own guns and spent all of time posting his Reeveshit and calling people poorfags. For 1 you are getting a knife from an American company hopefully that was made (or at least assembled in) America.

If your knife breaks you have a significantly better chance to have it fixed than sending it back to China.

Also the Chinese "companies" that copy and sell fake designs are pieces of shit who should never get business and should be banned from import.

I see a lot of cheap CRKT and Kershaw knives with a "Made in China" tag slapped in the blade, that's why I was asking on budget, not high end knives.

From my point of view I'm paying 30 instead of 10 bucks from something that also made the chinks with the americans charging me extra for slapping their logo.

>I'm none of this things

>>
>>33631785

My point is though we shouldn't be supporting fake chink knives because...

1. They are used to deceive both novice and in some cases experienced knife collectors and owners into buying knives at a significantly higher price

2. They hurt American knife makers who aren't being compensated

The price difference for cheap American knives and cheap chinese knives is not significant. If you are buying super cheap clones of cheap American knives you might as well be burning your money for buying an inferior version of a low end knife. It is worth the "investment" of getting a genuine knife than a cheap piece of shit clone that has no warranty, shitty steel, and steals from American knifemakers.

Then sticking with Case would probably be a good option for you. Boker also has some nice options in that market, and there's always the ubiquitous Buck 110.

Schrade's Old Timer series has cheaper options for old timey pocket knives if you want to get an extra that you won't care about abusing/losing, they'll look more traditional compared to stuff like Kabar's folding hunter (basically a modern Buck 110) but new Schrade is kind of a crapshoot. They really seem to have their shit together relative to a lot of other Chinese companies but you should always be wary of makers with different series/lines of knives because they're not always equal. For instance, Boker>Boker plus>Boker magnum.

How does D2 steel compares to 440C?

He already said he won't post those again, no idea if anyone screencapped or not.
Guy pays WAY below cost for his knives, so he probably got in trouble for sharing that too.
I'll dig through the archive and try to find something but that whole thread was 404'd
>>
>>33633050

440C is bottom of the barrel. If you can get D2 over 440C do it.
>>
>>33633050
Apples & oranges Anon. IMO D2 isn't worthwhile over 1095 or 5160 and despite what the first Anon said 440c is actually pretty good, people just think it's shit because most cheap knives are some flavor of 440 with a poor heat treatment.

What kind of blade shape & size are you considering and what's your intended use?
>>
>>33633050
440c is okay. D2 is a very tough steel but is more suseptable to corrosion. But is still pretty much better in every way.

I have no knowledge/experience with the SCAR so that's lost on me, but I get what you're saying. Spyderco Delica vs PM2.

>>
>>33633256
They work just as well as framelocks do. But both still sketch me out, I tend to avoid them unless the knife itself is really good. Faulty ones usually only happen on gas station or budget knives. I'd much rather have a compression lock or even an axis lock if I can.
>>
>>33633244
If that's the case. I wouldn't go with D2. It's easy as hell for it to rust. You could go with the 440c and be just fine.

ESEE Izula stainless.jpg
340KB, 1000x840px
>>33633614
Depends on the size of the knife.

In small knives stainless steels are usually pretty good, that's why many pocket knives use stainless steels. Good stainless can hold up in mid-size knives (Buck 102 & such) but then you start to see stuff like 1095 up to about 20". Once you hit 20" makers tend to steer towards 5160 or 1060 or 1075 or 9260, many sword manufacturers like 1060 and 9260.

ESEE's 440c Izula will handle anything reasonable that you throw at it, although I should point out that stainless steels are usually brittle relative to carbon steels (i.e. can't handle impact as well) so ESEE's warranty is inapplicable to their stainless blades. If you're just using it for fishing stuff then you ought to be fine with pretty much any decent stainless knife.

Where D2 shines is hardness. To oversimplify it, D2 gives you the hardness of a good stainless steel with the toughness of a good carbon steel. IMO you don't really see an appreciable difference until you get to larger knives though, like in the 10" and above range.

.... Yes, this is how exclusives work. They a Company makes a variation on a popular model, based off the impute of the retailer, and it is exclusive to that retailer. It's a completely Spyderco made knife.

But I can understand the confusion. I don't like how BladeHQ includes modified knives, like by Flytanium, in on the company pages.

I like this one, Jade G-10 looks cool (shows dirt easily though). The big thing though is the CPM-M4 blade. I don't have the budget for it right now, even if I did, I would buy a burple S110v one, because I like the blude (burple) more.

Yes, BM OTF's are that bad. 154CM steel at $400 is unacceptable, even Memetech has a better OTF at $250. Not to mention BM's spotty QC and warranty repairs, and the impracticality of an OTF in general. Probably not a good idea to take an OTF camping regardless of brand/model. If you're looking for a really good overall folder, but want to stay Benchmade, then the 810 Contego is somewhat fairly priced with a good steel. For even better results, get a PM2 instead, overall more versatile knife at a lower price and guaranteed quality.

It's in M4 and those natural G10 scales are neat, and M4 would make it a great user knife for me, but natural G10 shows every bit of dust and dirt buildup that the spyderco pattern picks up, and it picks up a LOT in my usage.

Maybe I'm just not excited by anything that isn't a pm2 or manix 2, but I think I'll be passing this one up in favor of the CF/Ti military.

Perhaps you're unaware. I've evolved, and mostly just lurk these days.

This guy isn't me. Only Cold Steel I own at the moment is a 4in blade grey G10 Talwar made of CTS-XHP, and a Voyager Tanto XL in CTS-BD1. I gave away my Finnwolf.

Framelocks on the ZT Emersons are shit for reverse grip. I don't trust them in reverse grip for trying to gain control over an attacker (too much pressure on spine can lead to the lock slipping/disengaging). Perfectly fine for saber grip. If they made the lockbar wider, reverse grip would be more plausible as I'd trust my grip to keep the lock from slipping, like with 0452cf. I trust that in reverse grip more, but even that one has the flaw of a thin stop-pin than most defensive/tactical knives I'm used to.

Thinking of sending them to a custom maker to turn them into compression locks with cf scales on both sides. They'd be perfect then. Absolutely perfect.

ZT has really awesome fit and finish, but they could really improve a lot of their knives with small but important touches like that.

I hope somebody else gets the compression lock patent somehow and does it right. Spyderco is completely wasting it's potential. That lock should be on all their knives. Not just the Sage, Carribean, PM2, PM3, and Yojimbo 2. Which are pretty much (Yojimbo 2 aside) slight variations of basically the same damn knife. That or maybe Emerson can buy the compression lock patent instead of just loaning out the wave patent for once.

I forgot about the Szabo, but yeah, Szabo/Yojimbo aside, Sage, Caribbean, and PM knives are basically the same.

I REALLY want to buy this knife, it's called Coltello a Tre Scrocchi(I don't how to translate it, maybe knife three cracksounds?), however is an historical knife from the '800, it was used during duels especially in Rome and the nearby regions, there are differnts types of blades, this one is roman.
>Why it is called Tre Scrocchi(Three Cracksounds)?
Basically when you open it it makes three sounds that seems like craks
>Why the three sounds?
During the duels in Rome during the '800 you need to show the knife to everyone before the fight and making the sound audible, if you didn't do it you'll get stabbed by everyone in the room
>Why did you need to make the knife audible?
Because in Rome during that era it was common place to lable people with a non-audible knife as assassins or spies or traitors.

I'd have to do some more research, but iirc Imperial was a cutlery manufacturer in Providence RI in the early 1900s. They were one of a few companies that produced the M3 knife between March 1943 and August 1944. They're highly collectible, but I don't think your friend would get much for one in that shape.

If you don't have a PM2 before then, that's your justification. The PM2 is justification in and of itself.
As far as other knives go, I take a look at what I have. Decide what I like or don't like, and look for any gaps for different EDC purposes. If you find one that fills a gap, your justification is that you need it for the EDC rotation. Just come up with excuses and sell them to yourself (or your significant other if need be).

Justify? I like them and they are useful tools. They don't take up space and if you get quality ones, like firearms they will hold their value and often go up in price.

I justify it in knowing that I can flip my knives for $$$ if needed but I only have less than 4k invested.
