Is the 19.25 inch barrel historically accurate for US service? Or should I just stick with the 22" barrel.

The M14 is easily the worst of the legacy battle rifles.
It was only adopted vice the FAL because of NIH and it was dropped faster than any other US service rifle because it was obsolete before the first one rolled off the production line.
The modified Garand action is extremely vulnerable to dirt and mud, and the ergonomics are worse than an AK's, since at least the AK doesn't have its safety inside the trigger guard where it can easily cause an ND.
It's possible to accurize it, but only at great and continuous expense since shooting it regularly or even just rough handling will cause it to deaccurize itself.
A standard M1A is hundreds of dollars more expensive than a FAL or G3 of similar quality because it's a modified 1930s design rather than a 1950s design and requires a corresponding level of laborious and costly hand-fitting of its parts.

I'll get back to you guys on how my LRA turns out on reliability, I'm actually going to run it off the range and keep track of stoppages and round count, which will probably be a thousand or so rounds the first few months, which will be expensive but I enjoy magdumping.

>>33609625
PTRs go for 1200, which yeah is pretty cheap.

SA58s go for 1600-1800 which is only about 200-400 less than a quality M14.

The M14 isn't unreliable, SOCOM 16 abortions and new M1As are.

It's probably the most accurate legacy style .308 with irons too.

New production, or at least relatively new now.
Been pretty great so far. Close to 1000 rounds in without a jam including reloads and steel case.
The only problem I've had is the charging handle biting the stock at first although that seems to have stopped since.
>>
>>33613312
Modern cast is better than 90s forged. Your not going to hit a million rounds through any FAL receiver no matter the firing schedule, but you can expect a respectable service life. If you want to get a more robust receiver get Type II or III. Type III is uggo and heavy as fuck though.

>>33609609
>>33609611
They are fine, capable rifles but there are good arguments that either a FAL, PTR-91 or AR-10 will give you a lot more for your money.
>>33609625
>Unreliable.
Something must be wrong with my "shit tier" Federal Ordnance model which ran 1,500 rounds with no cleaning in dust, mud and snow. Of course I wasn't submerging the thing on purpose like I retard, but it worked with minimal coaxing.
>Heavy
Son, it's a battle rifle. They weigh around 8-10 pounds. My Fed. Ord. weighed 8.25lb with a fiberglass stock and my M1A weighs about 9lbs with a USGI wooden one. I think with the same stock my Fed. had it would way about 8.5 due to the thicker cast op rod, but they are both 22" rifles. This is due to the government profile barrels. The match rifles definitely weigh more.

For a .308 battle rifle with a 22" barrel 8-9lb isn't bad at all. I've seen plenty of 16" AR-15s that weigh as much or more.
>hates sand, dirt and mud
Like anything else. Yes we've all seen the inrangetv videos. In my direct experience as long as you don't go full retard and intentionally go blowing debris into the gun it'll be fine. How many mudholes have you gone swimming in with your gun recently?
>>
>>33617282
if he wanted a good camp gun he wouldn't be getting an M14
>>
>>33609629
1) we all know the history. That is irrelevant to someone buying a civilian M1A or other M14gery.
2) Holds up to adverse conditions just fine if any degree of effort is put into keeping it sort of clean. Again going full retard and blowing dust into the gun or slathering it mud will cause problems, as it does with just about anything else.
3) Safety setup is debatable, IMO it allows easy carry with safety on, which can be disengaged as the rifle is shouldered right before the trigger pull. It's different if you're not used to it, but works great once you are.
4) Old school bedding is a headache which is why they have chassis systems now. Even then a basic bitch standard rifle will shoot better than you can and a hair better than the FAL and PTR, however I think a well built AR-10 has a substantial edge.
5) Yes they are expensive because it's an inefficient design that requires a lot of different machines and a lot of milling time. Value is by far the M14's biggest weakness.
>>33609967
With cerakote any color is an option.
>>33609976
PRVI Partizan. Runs great in literally everything I've ever shot it out of. Dirt cheap. Has red sealant around primers. Reasonably accurate too.

I've also been stocking any MKEK and Perfecta I could find, since I often find it for .50-.45 per trigger pull. Not the most accurate but it is great plinking fodder. I've also run a fuckload of steel out of my M14s and they don't give a fuck.
>>33610006
DAG and MEN isn't corrosive.
Also you should have a chrome lined barrel if I'm not mistaken.
>>33610203
Salt based primer compound. Longer shelf life and cheaper, but they leave residue that collects ambient moisture and promotes rust. It's why a lot of countries started using chrome lining. If your gun doesn't have it and you shoot corrosive ammo you need to clean it within at most a day after shooting. A quick burst of windex immediately after shooting helps too.
>>33610252

I have an M1A Scout, and I've been quite pleased with it overall. However, I did notice a series of weird failures to cycle when a friend of mine tried shooting it. We eventually discovered that his support hand was rubbing just a bit against the slide (attached to the opearting rod) which peeks through the right side of the stock, under the handguard. When he moved his hand away from this area while shooting, the gun cycled fine.

Is this normal behavior for an M1A? I was surprised that 1) my friend didn't notice the slide pinching/abrading his fingers on each shot, and that 2) the amount of friction his hand did impart was enough to short-stroke the gun.

yeah they're pretty fucking expensive but I think they did a great job on the build, most people have trouble keeping these guns (at least your run of the mill M14) even close to a 1 MOA gun but this prints groups under and a shade over 1 MOA and this is just the first stages of experimenting with it for me.

top group was a cold bore shot (at 2 o'clock) followed by 3 more shots with 175 gr FGMM ammo. the 3 shot group is sub MOA

below that is a 5 shot group of 168 gr SMK handloads that came in a bit over 1 MOA.

bottom 3 are all handloads with the best being the 5 shot group of 175 SMKs that was a 3/4 MOA group

I'm talking strictly on his ability to be able to handle the rifle. In one of his 2gun videos with it he's shooting at a target like 15(?) yards away and it takes him like 5-6 seconds to line up a shot, it's fucking ridiculous. Same with the 100 yard shots, just takes him forever to do anything with it
>>
>>33641126
Ian definitely isn't as proficiwnt a shooter as Karl is, but then that's probably why his channel is based on history rather than actual shooting.
>>
>>33641126
I just watched the video again, it's not quite as long as I remembered it but two engage to man sized targets at like 10-15 yards it took him almost almost 6 seconds to fire 4 shots and like 2 some seconds to get the first off

>>33641152
I know, but it pisses me off because he puts fault on the rifle being hard to use, when it really isn't

>>

>>33641364
DSA forged FALs, not Voyagers. DSA and Coonan both seem to have had spec problems lately, moreso with Coonan than anybody else though. Everybody agrees that old DSA stuff is top quality for what you can get in the US tho

It's nuanced as fuck, try to find a DS prefix/DSA LMT receiver if possible and you'll have 0 problems

They are amazingly accurate for their price point, with almost all examples being sub-MOA 5-shot groups with 168gr FGMM.

They take a fair amount of AR15 parts (though the G2 takes more while retaining the same accuracy and weighing significantly less).

They're the second lightest of the current crop of battle rifles, at a pound lighter than the SCAR and 3lbs lighter than the 417 (only beaten by the DPMS G2, which is ~1lb lighter still).

I still think that patch should have said Best Girl Of the Free World.

Come on anon.
(Though yeah that patch is awkwardly worded)

I'd check in the "French Guns" thread.

the queen gun, of machine puns, already has her perfect patch.

These kits are pretty good. The bore on mine is perfect, but the exposed exterior and muzzle device is overcleaned so that almost all the parkerization is gone. All the other parts have minor wear but otherwise fine and functional. Do it.

Depending on what options you want he's selling em cheaper on the files:

that'd be the M14

I was unaware of that. Thanks for saving me some money, Anon

Would be nice if it was more. But it's not. Still better buy than a ptr
>>
>>33665454
It's really not. You pay a few hundred more for a rifle that will perform the same and be much less reliable. If looks outweigh the negatives to it, then do what makes you happy.

>>
>>33667226
Not the best thing ever, but pretty good anyway. Definitely worth a watch.
>>
>>33667226
Pretty good except for one part where they tell a guy to use a Bren instead of a scoped Enfield to make a longer distance shot. It really didn't make much sense to me.
>>
>>33667272

it makes sense, bren is heavier and more stable when fired on semi-auto

one of my longest shots was on a belt fed .50 on semi-auto, went out to 1200+ meters using a T&E mount, machineguns are more accurate than they are given credit for

it was proably the sniper's personal preference to use a bren over an enfield, however a bren is twice the weight and is not as practical for a sniper moving in and out of concealment/cover
>>
>>33667517
I can understand that. I mean, some of the longest shots of all time were made with an M2. I just don't think there was that much of a reason to going from a perfectly adequate scoped rifle to the irons on the Bren. It wasn't a particularly long shot though. If I remember right, it wasn't the shooter that requested it, but I may just be misremembering it.

We've reached a point in the titanium market where it's plentiful enough and reasonably practical to work with so now everyone has to titaniumize all the things to stay afloat.
Thanks, technological-industrial capitalism.

How does it compare to steel besides weight and difficulty to manufacture? Sorry, I'm not a metallurgist.
>>
>>33669283
More prone to elastic deformation, less so on plastic deformation. Means it would make a shit barrel, but for things like muzzle brakes and pins and shit, its fine.
>>
>>33665418
It holds the bolt open for you. And more accurate than a fal despite it's ghetto way it attaches to the stock.
>>
>>33609629

Accurizing M14s is a fucking money pit with diminishing returns and the only people who do it are old ex-USMC Vietnam vets (or people who wish they were) who think anything used at a Camp Lejeune marksmanship competition is the end-all be-all of small arms design.

And this is coming from someone who loves the M14 design and who plans on scoping his. Any of the rifles ITT are 90% more accurate than their shooters. An inherent mechanical accuracy limit is irrelevant if the shooter isn't good enough to hit it.

Titanium is also very sticky. It needs to be coated if there's a high amount of friction on it.

The BM-59 doesn't have the same problems because they didn't fuck with the gas system of the Garand (see M14's white gas system). It's simply a shortening and rechambering of a garand and it worked pretty damned well.
>>
>>33609685
too much weight in that package. IMO all the HBAR PTR's are overly heavy. Not that it's not a great platform but you can push close enough performance out of a GI with wide handguards (free floated) and match ammo.
If you are looking for that you should gravitate towards an AR-10 or hold out for a long barrel SCAR.
You could have an HBAR AR-10 with Bipod and scope come in under 12lbs - any similar HBAR PTR kitted out is going to be approaching 15lbs - and don't even think about it with an M14

Bren has widely been called too accurate for a LMG and was by far the most accurate LMG of WW2.
The FN MAG 58 adopted the Bren's barrel locking method and it is known as being pretty damned accurate as well - 1200m first burst hits with irons are not uncommon between the MAG and M240

Trying to find more information about my FAL. It's an early DSA built rifle on LMT receiver. STG-58 kit. They had a run of rifles painted in digicam. Mine was marpat but I stripped that paint job off. The barrel is marked as you can see in the pic. Looking for more information on the barrel.
