I carried a padlock wrapped around a bandanna, however being able to explain a padlock is kind of hard unless you ride a bike everywhere.

a sock full of something heavy is good, but again, who carried an extra sock? and theres no way you made on in an emergency.

If you live in a large metro area that still prints a large newspaper i'd recommend looking up a millwall brick, but get yourself some rolls of nickles, or quarters and find a way to make a blackjack using a newspaper and coins.

Next up is a "sap cap" look those up. basically a hat with a leaded weight sewn into the top.

how lethal does this weapon need to be?

If its for non-less-lethal you'd want something that can be taken apart and easily destroyed.
