Being a cheap bastard apparently. At least it's an 1858 though.

Guilty. I'm a cheap fuck. I did end up paying less than 200 before tax at least. Been selling stuff on the local craigslist like crazy to make it happen. Even all of my snowflake brass for funs I don't own.

Armi San Marco 44 cal reporting in.

I have a shopping cart on Amazon with a poncho, sheepskin vest, and leather hat.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to go all in on spaghetti western yet but it's an Italian pistol so I guess I'm already fucked.

Do love me some black powders, pictured are a Colt Walker (Uberti) and two 1858's from Pietta, all in .44 cal.

I also have a double barrel howdah pistol in 20ga and pedersoli blue ridge percussion in .50.
Not sure if it counts but I also have a Beaumont Vitalli, although I've never fired it because ammo is about 80 bux for 20 and the reloading dies are 200.

Pedersoli Howdah I mentioned earlier, had old pictures hidden. Love sending two .60 cal round balls downrange, but its finicky in the kind of powder it uses, it doesn't like substitute powder that much, but if I pour in 10 grains of FFFF Goex brand black powder and then 30-50 of any substitute FF then it fires every time

Yep. I cursed mine the first time I cleaned it but now it's a labor of love.

Was leaning Pedersoli Pennsylvania Long Riffle. Anyone have thoughts?
>>
for a beginner that will probably only shoot once every two years or so would it be better to get a flintlock than a percussion?

I'd feel it would be one less thing to buy on something I'd only dabble in.

Get a flintlock if you want a flintlock.

Get a percussion cap if you want a percussion cap.

A percussion revolver is definitely the easiest way to get into into the sport.

They're more accurate, faster to load, easier to shoot, and actually have fewer base components to each shot.

Percussion revolver:
-Ball
-Pistol powder
-Cap
-Bore butter (if you want to)

Flintlock
-Ball
-Flint
-Pistol powder
-Priming powder
-Wad
-Lube

Love me some black powder

Currently have an Uberti 1847 Walker and 1851 Navy, as well as a Traditions Kentucky Rifle I built from a kit.

Also have pic related on order from MVTCo

Eventually wanna get a Trade Gun kit from Track of the Wolf, and either a P53 Enfield or an 1861 Springfield
>>
>>33572198
Vitali magazines are sexy, I may get a vetterli or Beaumont just for that
>>
There is an Uberti Cattleman for sale near me in .357, I wanna know if it needs to be on half cock to rotate the cylinder (like a colt) or if it doesnt (like a Ruger)
>>
>>33573764
Can't really go wrong with Pedersoli. Go for it!
>>
>>33576850
The cattlemans are almost identical to colts. The only difference I know of is the second notch in the cylinder pin that allows it to be put on "safety"
>>
>>33577022
Thanks, I prefer the more authentic colt style over the rugers

>>
>>33579229

Beginner kit as in you just need to blue the barrel and finish the stock?
>>
>>33581140
As in a disassembled gun I need to put together
>>
>>33581181
That would be every rifle kit available. There's none that actually come with a finished stock as far as I'm aware. Most kits go for ~$300 and up, but you can find pistol kits for 1/3 the price sometimes.
>>
>>33581181
I recommend looking at midwayusa, deercreekproducts.net, and muzzle-loaders.com. Check online to see if anyone's selling a kit in an estate sale or something near you for the best possible deal. Personally, I prefer the Traditions brand for any kits I buy.

Pyrodex is the most common "black powder substitute." It is really the only synthetic black powder "performance" substitute in common use. By performance substitute, I refer to a charge of loose powder measure by volume. A 100 grain volumetric charge of Pyrodex RS (Rifle/Shotgun) is very close in performance to Goex FFg black powder.

There are differences, though, and this is where things get a bit convoluted. Pyrodex is bulkier, another way of saying "less dense." By weight, it is more powerful than Goex black powder. But, the traditional method of measuring black powder is indeed by volume, so in that sense it is a black powder performance substitute.

By actual weight, it is not the same. 100 grains measured by volume of Goex FFg is about 101.3 grains by weight. 100 grains measured by volume of Pyrodex RS is about 72.5 grains by weight. Pyrodex is where confusion can start to set in, as the standard "F" designations of powder coarseness start to go out the window.

Pyrodex "Select," formulated for use in muzzleloading rifles, is touted as an "extremely consistent" grade of Pyrodex, and has the largest grain size of them all. It is even farther away from black powder by actual weight; 100 grains volumetric equals about 63.9 grains by actual weight.

I tried Goex Pinnacle back when it was still available. It worked well enough but I had to use a volumetric measure rather than a powder flask with calibrated spout. Even though it was advertised as FFFg the grains were far coarser and tended to clump up so they would not meter well through the flask valves.

Pinnacle was an ascorbic acid-based powder so I suspect moisture absorption was a contributing factor but the metering and clumping issues existed from the first use from a sealed bottle.

I've been using proper Goex FFFg powder for several years now and aside from the difficulty in finding it, it has none of the problems I experienced with Pinnacle.
>>
>>33592827
I've never tried Pinnacle. So clumping is the only set back? I had one type, I forget what, but I just smacked the hell out of it and it was good to go. I do remember it was from an ol' boy that horded it in the basement. Anyway, it shot fine after beating the hell out of it.
>>
Damn, I never knew this.....

* Pinnacle is a heat degraded ascorbic acid based powder as was Clean Shot
* Hodgdon sued Clean Shot Technologies for infringement of their Pyrodex technology
* As a result of the verdict, Clean Shot went out of business and formed a new company, American Pioneer Powder making the same ascorbic acid based powder
* Goex wanted in on substitute powders and contracted with APP to make an ascorbic acid based powder called Pinnacle
* Hodgdon had Pyrodex and in the meantime developed Triple Seven. Hodgdon Powder Company began to ship their new black powder substitute in February, 2002.
* In 2009,Hodgdon purchased Goex and had in their product line, Pyrodex and Triple Seven. Pinnacle was deemed to be a low revenue product and was phased out
* In addition, Hodgdon was aware that Pinnacle powder was nothing more than the same minor modification formulation of the old Clean Shot ascorbic acid based powder

Here is a recap of the law suit between Hodgdon and Clean Shot:
November 2001, Shawnee Mission, Kansas Hodgdon Powder Company announces that Clean Shot Technologies, Inc. was shot down by a jury verdict in a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Hodgdon.

A Federal Court jury in West Palm Beach Florida on Monday November 5, 2001 unanimously handed down a verdict in favor of Hodgdon Powder Company, Inc. and against Clean Shot Technologies, and awarded Hodgdon damages in the sum of $1,014,660.

The jury rejected all of Clean Shot's claims that the Hodgdon patent was not valid, including evidence of products claimed to have been made by the long defunct Golden Powder Company. The jury unanimously found that Clean Shot had willfully infringed Hodgdon's Pyrodex Pellet patent by copying and selling pelletized powder known as "Quick Shots". An injunction prohibiting further production and sale of "Quick Shots" was issued November 7, 2001.

Hodgdon will also file a post trial motion asking the Judge to increase damages up to three times.

It's such a shame that Goex is so difficult to sourceā€”it's definitely my favorite to use. I can't find it locally, so I always have to pay hazard shipping fees on top of the price for the powder. Why isn't Goex sold alongside Pyrodex and Triple 7? Is real black powder just too niche in a world of substitutes?
>>
>>33588610
Same happened to me. Hand and trigger/cylinder stop springs break like crazy.
>>
>>33596182
Do you know where to get a replacement spring that actually works for less than 30 dollars? The uberti spring differs from other manufacturer's springs to the point that it sometimes fails to completely cycle when the hammer is pulled back. I haven't even fired the thing because it just feels unsafe right now.

It comes down to the legal difficulties. Since blackpowder is legally an explosive, anyone selling it must be licensed as an explosives dealer with the BATFE and must have licensed storage containers. This is too much trouble for the niche market it serves so most big box stores only carry the substitutes which are classified as flammable solids - the same as smokeless powder.
