While not ALL shooting requires the break to come as a surprise - in the beginning and for shooting groups - yes you want the gun to literally surprise you when it goes off, use the above technique to achieve this.

Use the isosceles stance, on the balls of your feet, bent slightly forward but comfortable. Don't lock your elbows, also rotate your elbows slightly up to apply more grip strength higher up on the gun.

EVERYTHING is allowed.

If you shoot with something outside what would be considered traditional or modern "duty" or "every day carry" gear then you simply move to the open division. The idea is to measure scores via the intent of the design of the drill, in this case it's designed around a fighting pistol, but if you wanna use a rifle, a tricked out long barreled scoped .22LR - or whatever, we definitely don't want to run you off. In fact I would love spectating the more exotic gear owners battle it out with the space magic gizmos

It isn't! Don't want to make it seem that way either, that said for the bantz and fun we've been doing some friendly dick waving is all.

In fact the real intent is to get /k/ active and on the range doing drills rather than plinking, helping anons build measurable baselines for them to improve upon. Something we need to work into the OP of these threads would be related to that - these exists for everyone and it's knowledge based with didactic intent.

Good on you for passing the criteria along - this is actually an insanely well designed drill.... rarely do I run into a drill I can't "trick" by just farming until I get an outlier "awesome" score.

>Sorry not trying to bully but I asked for the digits last thread and you bailed

Did I? Sorry, probably didn't see.

You really can't shoot it on an 8.5x11, it's a fuckhueg target target. You can buy the targets here, Tom Givens the guy in the video came up with it and gets comissions if you buy the real ones like in this link.

https://shop.actiontarget.com/content/dt-2a-discretionary-command-training-target-version-2-a.asp

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97v3JoMhjkg

The casino drill target has three variants so it mixes them up making it less predictable.
>7 rounds in a mag
>reload
>7 rounds in another mag
>reload
>7 rounds in another mag
>7 feet
>21 second limit
>>
>>33571860

That said this will never be official DOTM because many anons cannot draw and shoot on demand from the holster - BUT we are gearing towards a club inside of this that will have access to these means. So do not leave us hanging, contributions is the thing to make or break us.

This made me chuckle because it's true. I have a few casino targets in my trunk, I'll get them for measurement maybe for tomorrow. That being said, I don't know how the fuck DOTM will be a thing if we cannot incorporate draws in our drills. That's like saying no drills with rapid fire, it's so...limiting.
>>
>>33572331
It is but we have nebulous drills and popst, I actually encourage you to promote stuff you want to see shot, fuck i'll shoot it and post.

But the baseline DOTM - the thing that binds this huge spread has to be accessible, understandable and implementable for 99%.

Hey guys, recent hasguns here, and I figured I'd get in on this marksmanship general. Some friends and I gave the challenge a shot at the range today, here's my results.

For boring logistical reasons we did sets of 2x4, rather than the correct 2x5, with times appropriately adjusted. I'm pretty happy with 158/240 for a first try.

Questions:

-Do I score the shot that's outside the 5 circle? or do only scores above 5 matter?

-As you can see from the target, I really fell apart on the 3rd round. How do I keep things more together when firing so quickly?

First of all, so awesome to have you participate, and awesome work getting you buds involved as well. You sir are always welcome here.

>-Do I score the shot that's outside the 5 circle? or do only scores above 5 matter?

This is a 2 fold answer - most of us are cheap lazy bastards and have been using repair center targets, lacking the additional rings we have basically been scoring anything outside of 7 as 0, for you, anything outside of 5 would be 0 points (or negative 10, how ever you do the math)

>-As you can see from the target, I really fell apart on the 3rd round. How do I keep things more together when firing so quickly?

This is a complex answer, but I would start by practicing shooting in a rhythm , skip to 1:40 on this video - this might help you build that rhythm, or at least get familiar with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KanMzvFztbo

For me personally I build a very gradient like consistent increase in speed on the 15 and 10 sec shooting as my body gets comfortable in the recoil cycle as more rounds leave the gun.

First off, welcome to the club! It's good to have you here man.
When shooting the rapid fire you have WAY more time than you think, ficus on sight picture, do not pull the trigger until your sights are lined up and remember you need to see your front sight more than anything. Gotta slow down to go fast man, take a breath and just focus on smooth shots on target.

That is an EXCELLENT group then, one to be proud of.

The AE 50gr Vmax load is a known shooter btw, and handles fast-twist barrels like a champ. People grossly misrepresent the effects of twist rate on rifle bullets, and while a 1:7 may be slightly suboptimal from a raw accuracy standpoint you're not gonna see it until you're into the premium cut-rifled barrels on accurized boltguns shooting off a bench. Hell I've shot as light as 38gr bullets through my 1:8 that produced >>33582812 with sub-minute results.

Friend #1 was trying out the Springfield shield .40. His shooting was alright, but we somehow lost track of 10 of his shots. I'm not clear as to where they went. 84/240.

This could easily be printed on six sheets of paper. Seems like a tough, yet practical drill. I guess that the goal would simply be completing the drill without fucking up.

I guess anons that aren't permitted holster draw at their range could modify to low ready or picking the gun up off a bench or something.

Can someone recommend a decent shot timer? You guys have convinced me it's time to pick one up.

Good on you for trying the drill, it's far tougher than it seems on paper.

I second this trick. It works.

It might also be worth noting that I've never used snap caps for my dry fire practice. They aren't necessary in modern, centerfire guns and will just slow you down.

Try pulling the trigger while balancing an empty cartridge case on top of the slide. If it falls off, you failed the drill.

Dude! Being willing to play and learn is the BEST characteristic you can posses, with that mentality you are guaranteed to progress 10x faster than the internet tough guy chad who is throwing his targets in the trash and swearing off DOTM rather than posting. (we know you are out there)

definitely take the other anons suggestions about dry fire and snap caps into play, to formalize it I suggest this drill: https://pistol-training.com/drills/ball-dummy-drill

It might be boring, but just rep it until it starts to come together!

brainfarted the first string in the Tactical Conference 2017 Pistol Match Course of Fire, but shot it well so I'm calling it a new drill.

CDB (compressed double bill): 5 Yards, 2 8" diameter circles 1 yard apart, 4 shots per target from concealment.

>duty pistol
nah man that's a purpose-built bullseye 1911. And the sight itself is intact, just lost the fiber optic light pipe out of it. Little slower on target but still fully usable.

Also that's a cherry-picked target out of the 8 I shot today.

>>
>>33618058
12lb DAO over and over and over.

>>33618120
If it makes you feel any better, I score 100s on our course of fire - timed strings of 2 and 3 rounds at 25, 15, and 10 yards - though they score it as any hit on a silhouette counts, so it's hardly a huge challenge. Could I keep it on paper at 100 yards? Probably most shots, but project gangbangers don't trade shots with me from the next block over, so I doubt I'll ever have to.
Sucking ass is inevitable with 12lb triggers though. I'd rather spend my time and ammo shooting guns I actually enjoy.

Consider this: The vast majority of police shootings happen within 20 feet, and most often involve point shooting for lack of time to aim. Those skills I practice with my duty, since our course of fire is stuck in the 1970s, along with the "semi-auto hair triggers are dangerous, we gotta give everything shitty DA revolver-esque triggers!" mentality that pervades my city administration.
>>
>>33617892

Ah yes, the "It doesn't happen often so I'll use that as an excuse to never challenge myself" argument. Failure is scary after all, wouldn't want to do poorly at 25yds and bruse your ego, much better to intentionally handicap your skills to arms reach because youre too scared of not doing well.

>>
>>33621787
Ooops, seems like I didn't express myself well enough. I knew that it wasn't a formal competition and actually like the fact that it is a community event. I just meant that next time i go to the range, I will try to shoot your drill.

It's a buckmark contour urx chambered in .22 LR, not a pellet rifle. It might not seem like a traditional pistol but that is because it is the precision competition model. It has a 5.5 inch precision barrel and a full length weaver rail on top. It is actually intended to be a host for a magnified optic, hence the full length rail, but i'm currently just using irons. I might add a red dot optic in the future but have no intention to ever mount a magnified optic.
>>
>>33621187
not him but I'm strongly considering on using my 226 that has a 12lb trigger for the dotw, decocking after each shot.

Practice your draw. Firearms instructor here. We run a drill like this. You are hooded, the hood is ripped off, and someone is often bum rushing you with a knife. I can get out of the holster and on target at 3 yards, before he can swing. Most people freeze at first, don't forget TO GET THE FUCK OFF THE X
>>
>>33622199
Hard to find places that allow you to practice like that, and our range certainly doesn't. Half the ranges around don't even like you shooting from the holster, but I do my best.

Wish they put us through Simunitions training more often - they put us through a similar scenario last time.
>Be onna corner with partner
>Sketchy guy approaches, "Hey Officer, I found this-"
>at 3 meters, reaches into jacket and pulls something out
>GUN GUN GUN!
>Partner stays on the X while drawing, gets sim'd right in the neck
>I duck behind the only cover, a stop sign pole, and dump 5 or 6 sim rounds into the instructor

They stopped doing Simunitions though. I don't know why, but it was legitimately among the best training I ever had - on other cops, they tried to pull an Amadou Diallo and "drew" a wallet.

>>33622142
What if you see him at twenty yards? Or he's thirty yards away and swinging on an officer? These pople don't teleport into your personal bubble, most police involved shootings happen at close range because police intentionally get close to threats. If you're purposefully training for only one type of encounter because "It will never happen to me" you are exactly why I immediately think less of an officer opening their mouth about firearms use.

Don't go shooting at longer ranges and pushing yourself because of my spergy bullshit, do it because having that capability might legitimately enable you to save another persons life some day. You're not just armed for personal defense like the rest of us, you owe it to society to be better with your gun.
>>
>>33618212
You need to come one department to the east. Our DAK triggers suck slightly less than your DAO since they're 6.5 lbs. They only suck for rapid fire stuff because of the long-ass pull every shot. Why didn't you just go with the Glock 19? My friend is in your department, and now that his trigger is broken in a little more, I'd actually almost prefer to carry his 19 than my 226 DAK.
>>
>>33622142
And be glad you still use 9mm. We use .40 for no scientific reason; it was louder than 9, so someone in charge thought it must be better. I shit you not. I think we may switch back to 9 soon, and once our new commissioner comes in next month, I'm hoping that we switch to Glocks or the 320. All the guys at FTU have 320s now, so I'm hoping that's a sign.
>>
>>33621187
Not helpful. There are dozens of other threads for you to shit up.
>>
>>33623184
If he's 20 yards away and closing, I'm ordering him to drop it and show me his hands until the threat is imminent, or I'll become the next posterboy for trigger happy police brutality because obviously he dindu nuffin was a good boy gon chop down some trees.

If he's 30 yards away and swinging on an officer, of course I'll take the shot if they're not rolling on the ground with each other. I know I can reliably hit a man size target at that range in center mass. Don't think I don't practice at all with my duty guns - I certainly do, especially since the job gives me free ammo at their range to shoot their course with, but the amount of improvement you can make with that trigger is very finite.

>>33623280
I'm out of this shithole as soon as I get a job offer down in Florida. They still do 20 year retirement, no state tax, lower cost of living, and some depts there even let you take your time in front.
>>
>>33623813
Sorry for my attitude earlier, cops that find excuses for their inability or reasons to not train are a pet peeve of mine.

>but the amount of improvement you can make with that trigger is very finite.
Are you sure that's not just because you seem to immediately say, and I quote, "I'm not even going to bother"?

Get out and shoot the DOTM and report back man, I got faith you can drastically improve with a little practice, and at the very least it will give you more confidence with your duty gun.

Btw, there was a guy in the last thread that carries a 12lb NYC trigger G22 by choice, and he shot this drill without hesitation.

>By the way, I'm sorry your department sucks man, nobody should have to deal with that crap at work in addition to all the social stress that comes with your job
>>
>>33623184
Don't want to derail the thread, but where in Florida? And do the thing allow straight laterals?
>>
>>33624005
Lol, don't worry, attitudes being directed at me are part and parcel. Apologies for it are rare.

I've shot enough through my boat anchor that I'm fairly confident my skills with it have reached their plateau - or at least any improvement is miniscule compared to the trigger's impact. For all of their retardation, my job is generous with ammo when we train, and they don't go cheap either - the same primo gold dot +Ps we carry.
I still see improvement when I practice with my personal guns in my own time.

>>33624141
Nobody I've found does straight laterals, but starting from base pay isn't so bad with the salaries and costs down there. I'm looking around Broward to be close to the wifey's family. Fort Lauderdale closed their applications recently, but they look promising. Putting in for Hollywood and Plantation this weekend, and fanning out to all the little towns from there. There's a couple of sites which list all the depts in Florida by county, start with their sites, they usually say on there.

>your arsenal already represents a lot of money, therefor it, statistically, represents a large portion of your budget
Again still an assumption but statistically likely
>this leaves little budget for training ammo, meaning fewer rounds per pistol, meaning less proficiency with any given pistol
Still going off the original assumption you don't have the money to train extensively with each, which is still statistically likely

And the secondary, time
>it is assumed you are employed
Your arsenal represents more than what NEETbux can buy
>it is confirmed you waste time on 4chan during daylight hours
I mean, you post here during times when the entire Western hemisphere is still illuminated
>therefor due to employment and 4channing you don't have the TIME to reach proficiency with each handgun individually, and spreading your limited range time across a wide assortment of handguns goes against muscle memory with a particular firearm

And I just realized I've been typing "you" the whole time instead of "he" but fuck going back and fixing it all.
>>
>>33626928
Yeah, like I said, I realize it doesn't work for everyone. I shoot something like 1,350 rounds of pistol ammo a month and dry fire quite a bit, but my biggest thing is learning how to use experience with one firearm to improve with another.

This whole "If you use a 1911 you'll suddenly became a retard and try to load magazines in the muzzle of a Glock. " thing doesn't hold water outside of bleeding edge grand master levels of competition.

I also think it's important to consider the people that pick up a gun other than their primary carry and suddenly can't hit a barn from the inside and fumble reloading and forget the safety. I don't have that problem

Just wanted to comment, your recoil control is fantastic.

Also, expect more USP and S&W model 65 DOTM targets this Friday. I'm feeling frisky.

Joke's on you, I maximize use of my time by shitposting at work while getting paid!
>>

thx m8 I look at guys like Cowan and Vogel and Sevigny and I see huge distances to advance, relatively speaking.

But then I see guys like Vickers run a handgun and I love myself, kek.

>Also, expect more USP and S&W model 65 DOTM targets this Friday. I'm feeling frisky.

BRING THE HEAT

The bar has been set pretty high, it's got me legit on my back foot with even tryin to catch up...I'm a participating observer at this point.

Trying some shit at home since the last thread. Can't do the dummy drill until saturday.

nice anon, also just in general try a two handed grip and break the trigger, be aggressive and contain ALL movement. what you want it to feel out good paths of resistance and waste in your trigger finger movement and grip. Do it over and over until the failures present themselves.

More like the "This guy shoots better than you" starter pack. He's consistently putting up good targets, yet all you can do is run your faggot mouth.

A few clicks away from ordering one of the "demo" model swfa scopes. Are those high rings on that setup (look like Warne highs)? Wondering if I can get away with mediums...
>>
>>33629943
That's a "Demo B" scope, I own two of them. Do it.

Warne tactical mid height rings, absolutely love them.

For anyyone curious about the tactical conference course of fire:

Target: Two IDPA with 3x5s added to the head, targets spaced 30" apart

String 1 - 5 yards - Draw and fire 3 rds to the body on T1, then fire 3 rds on the body to T2, then 1 head shot on T1 and 1 head shot on T2.

String 2 - 5 yards - Draw and fire 3 rds on T1, dominant hand only, switch the gun to the non-dominant hand, and fire 3 rds on T2, non-dominant hand only.

String 3 - 7 yards - Begin at Ready, with only 4 rds in the gun. Fire 4 rds on T1, conduct an empty gun reload, and fire 4 rds on T2. *Shooter may transition to a BUG instead of reloading, his choice.

String 4 - 15 yards - Draw and fire 3 rds to T1, drop to a Kneeling Position, and fire 3 rds at T2.

Score is time + Penalties

-0 zone and 3x5 = no penalty
Head box outside the 3x5 = 1 second per shot
-1 zone = 2 seconds per shot
-3 zone and misses = 5 seconds per shot

It reads easy but dang those miss penalties are stiff

Sorry if I've missed it somewhere, but I'd like to join, but I've only got my durr rifle with me for a good few weeks, but on the upside I got some spare magazines and I could use some work on my unsupported shooting.
Should I start from a slinged position, or is low ready acceptable?
Should I play at the same ranges, or longer range?
If the target gets shot up bad, is it acceptable to replace it for the next stage, to preserve legibility?
Sorry if I sound clueless, but truth is that I am, as far as practical shooting goes.

>Should I start from a slinged position, or is low ready acceptable?

I'd say it's your call, just note which you do when posting results

>Should I play at the same ranges, or longer range?

Sane range is fine

>If the target gets shot up bad, is it acceptable to replace it for the next stage, to preserve legibility?

Yep, plenty of folks shoot a different target for each string to track their shots better

>Sorry if I sound clueless, but truth is that I am, as far as practical shooting goes.

Not at all bro, all good. Also this is the official drill for the whole month, so might be you get your hand gat in time! Either way feel free to shoot this qualifier after the fact and report in DOTM is here to stay!

Sweet, we are primed for a new thread for the weekend, maintaining roughly 40 unique posters too, ggwp lads. Raise a glass to getting even more anons involved.

bump so the eurocucks and aussies don't kill us prematurely and we roll seamlessly into the new thread tomorrow.

The A/K/ crew can hold down the fort. Have 175 round of .38 special and roughly 150 9mm ready to go for today's shooting.

If anyone is a reloader, Accurate Arms #5 is VERY clean powder. Soak with a little Kroil and what little residue is left just wipes right off. I was even able to reload once fired cases without tumbling them, which is something I never thought I'd try.
>>
>>33640929
Might be a little late to RC today, my roommate is joining the K-frame club but we need to go pick up his revolver before we hit the range.

The average grocery store aisle is 27 yards. Let that put the distances you will encounter people in perspective and then think about how fast they can draw and fire.

A/k/ pulls it's weight, we love you guys

Noice m8, I'm, def going to shoot this at least twice this weekend, but I DEMAND a 24-25 second clean run on the tactical conference pistol qualifier first. All the elements for it are there, I just need one fucking run that doesn't have user induced malfunctions, erroneous starting positions or a pushed shot at the 15 yard line. This qualifier is like the practical shooting side of the FBI Bullseye qual - you can't fucking cheat it, it all comes out in the wash and scores are super tight from one attempt to the next

>>33641256

Alright /k/, the weekend is upon us, grab your repair centers and your handgat and SHOOT SOME BULLSEYE
