The single edge is an M15, S35VN steel with G10 grips.

The dagger is an M93, made of S7 steel and G10 grips. The S7 is serious goddamn business, it's amazingly strong and the blade is t h i c c a f.

Technically these are midtechs, but they may as well be customs since American Kami is a one man operation and it takes months to get hold of these knives. DJ outsources the manufacturing processes (milling, heat treat, DLC coating) to companies in the US with US-sourced materials. He assembles it all by hand, sharpens them, and makes all the kydex for them.

Really quality knives, but my biggest complain by far is how goddamn slow DJ is because he seems intent on never hiring employees to help with tasks like responding to emails, packing, and assembly of midtechs (literally just those chicago screws), even though he requests full payment up front and it may be a year before you see your knife. Some poor fucker spent $850 on a folding knife from AK, and the guy has yet to see it two years later. When I ordered that dagger, I received it within the 3 month frame DJ said he'd deliver. Unfortunately the extra G10 grips and kydex sheath I ordered for my Boker Colubris have taken more than a year. The kydex takes time, I understand, but the grips are something he keeps in-stock. Not cool. Best bet is to buy the shit he has in-stock, ready to ship.

>>
>>33519753
I don't expect a poorfag on 4chan to understand why I'm willing to spend money on folding knife bliss, but I'll try to explain:

The materials are top quality. The craftsmanship is second to none. The exclusivity and rarity increases the uniqueness. The design is classy and subtle. The action of the knife is mechanical bliss; drop-shut smooth.

Sure, I could go buy a ZT and be content - in fact I own a couple ZTs for when I know I'm going to do some not-so-nice shit to my knife. But this is something that reaches beyond content. It has a similar appeal to mechanical Swiss watches. Sure a digital clock is more accurate and everyone's phone has a clock, but this is about more than its utility as a tool. This is a piece of art sculpted by a craftsman, and there is a beauty to its excellence outside of its utility as a cutting tool.

>>
>>33519831
It is essentially a custom. Shirogorov classes it as a production knife, but the quality is on-par with many true customs. IIRC all Shiro blades, even the production models like the Neon, are ground by hand. There are touches of custom like a multirow bearing system that makes the action glide like greased glass, but I think the most appropriate term would be midtech. Believe me, there are more expensive midtechs out there, and with better supply chains. Unfortunately for us in the US, Shirogorov has to prioritize their rather sizable Russian market, so we don't get much supply and these fuckers are scarce. The result is higher prices.

Hell this isn't even the most expensive Shiro I've purchased or considered buying. I scored a $1050 Shiro 111 CF for $718 on eBay, and I'm putting aside money for the Russian Flipping Tanto collaboration coming soon that'll end up in the $1,500 range.

It's probably madness desu.

That wasn't even bait. There are people legitimately defending spending $750 on a folding knife; that's ridiculous. I get paying for quality products, I own multiple $5k+ precision rifle builds (because they can do things standard rifles can't), but there is absolutely no qualitative difference between a $750 knife and one half that much that justifies the cost.

You have to be autistic to legitimate defend that type of ridiculous purchase.
>>
>>33523061
>spends $5k on a rifle he'll never use to potential to shoot paper
>gripes at someone spending $750 on a knife so they can appreciate something aesthetic and hand-crafted when doing mundane shit like opening mail or peeling an apple

You have to be autistic to not see the irony of your argument. Just because you don't see the value personally doesn't mean people are retarded for wanting an expensive knife. And yes, there are qualitative differences, you're just too ignorant to understand what those differences are because you view knives exclusively as tools instead of broadening your vision to works of art to collect and appreciate.

I'm sure. Too bad you can't because you're too busy grinding to pay off your credit card, you suburban commando twatface. What's the point of you owning such a precision rifle when you're spending your time on 4chan instead of out training to actually shoot accurately? Because you want it. Because it provides you some form of fulfillment.
>"Used to do literally nothing that can't be accomplished by a $10 Walmart Gerber"
You know what a Walmart Gerber can't do? Be a $750 art piece that happens to also function as a damn good knife. With blade steel like M390 I'll bet it's capable of a lot as a knife, just like your rifle is capable of a lot as a rifle. I just explained to you that a custom knife is more than what it can cut, just like how your rifle is more to you than just a tool.

You're being an insufferable faggot and nobody has to justify their purchases to you. Get over yourself nigger, what are you a democrat deciding who needs what? Not gonna waste my time explaining why a custom knife is worth its price because you're too much of shitcunt cumguzzling cuck and you're being disingenous. Kill yourself.

Oh boy someone's mad because the nail was hit right on the head.

>>33523477
Yes, custom rifles can do stuff that factory rifles can't. I acknowledge, and understand this, and did so before this discussion. Like rifles, a custom knife can do stuff that a production knife can't. Like rifles, it is about refinements. With knives, because of their single utility purpose, the refinements usually end up being aesthetics, materials, and how it feels to manipulate the action of the blade. Knife collectors are willing to pay for those things because it makes them happy, just like how owning a $5,000 makes the owner happy even if it doesn't accomplish much work.
>>
>>33523640
Spyderco makes a sharpening kit that's pretty good. https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77

Or you can buy some varying grit stones and practice hand beveling, but you run a greater risk of fucking up the existing edge. Unless you've wrecked your factory edge somehow, all it may need is a honing or stropping to return to center, as the blade edge will tend to fold over with use.
>>
>>33523646
>a custom knife can do stuff that a production knife can't
>just like how owning a $5,000 makes the owner happy even if it doesn't accomplish much work
Please explain what your custom knife can do that a production knife can't. So far all you've done is acknowledge that a $5000 rifle can shoot unlike a lesser rifle, but apparently your $750 knife is still only good for peeling apples.

What can your waste of money do that a $10 Gerber can't? What can it cut that another can't? Do you have any actual claims, or is your entire defense "because I said it's worth $750".

You'll certainly be able to recoup your costs of your letter opener through your thriving salt business, though.

1/2

>"Please explain"
I did explain.
>"With knives, because of their single utility purpose, the refinements usually end up being aesthetics, materials, and how it feels to manipulate the action of the blade."

A cheap Gerber has a shitty blade steel like AUS 8 that loses its edge very quickly, and will not hold a razor's edge because it lacks the hardness required without becoming brittle. It will require constant maintenance to the edge if it sees any use. A high end knife utilizing something like M390, S90V, or S35VN will hold a very, very sharp edge through far more usage. So yes, a premium knife will cut better, for far far longer. And bringing back a razor's edge wouldn't be difficult with some stropping or light passes with high grit stones. A premium still will resist chipping as well, and endure much tougher jobs. High end steel will essentially never corrode in anything beyond the most harsh, abusive environment when bare. High end steel is expensive and more difficult to work with, hence a price premium.

A premium knife will utilize materials like carbon fiber, G10, and titanium for its handles instead of aluminum or steel. This means a much lighter, stronger knife that is still incredibly durable and corrosion resistant. Typically, high end knives will employ a frame lock style action for increased lock strength, instead of the typical liner lock you see on the average production knife. This costs more time and energy to manufacture and fine-tune so that lockup is precise and prevents undesirable traits like lock rock, which is unpleasant, makes the knife feel flimsy, and is potentially dangerous as the lock could more easily be disengaged and close the blade on your fingers. A strong lock will resist far more stress. This build quality costs time to achieve, and premium materials. A knifemaker has to individually tune each action so lockup is as early as possible to maximize the lock life.
>>
>>33523895
That doesn't speak for the knife at all.

Not that guy, but I don't understand why you have to get defensive about your basic little flipper. If you don't think it's a waste of money then you won't be bothered by comments like that.

It would be nice if you could at least name a few features as to what makes it it a nice knife also, since they aren't even custom.
>>
>>33523703
2/2

A cheap knife uses teflon plastic or bronze washers for its action, or perhaps even the ancient fudd technology like lockbacks which are slow to deploy and stiff as a corpse to operate. Bronze washers are usually better, but are still stiff. The knife may have trouble quickly deploying with an annoying spring-based deployment, and will certainly not fall closed when you disengage the lock. A premium knife will utilize either very precisely fitting washers to resist grit entering the action (the Shirogorov Hati is a good example of an extremely high quality washer knife). Chris Reeve Sebenzas are another good example of washer knives. They tend to be a little stiff still, but are butter-smooth to operate. A knife on stainless or ceramic bearings, as much of the premium makers employ, will glide effortlessly and feel very nice to operate while still being strong. The knife will flip open with even the most half-assed attempts at deployment. The knife will fall closed with either a gentle wiggle, or under its own weight. This is a pleasing refinement to feel when manipulating the knife, and it is a challenging thing to get right without spending a lot of time tuning it. The result is more money needs to be spent to compensate the labor and time spent.

Lastly is aesthetics. Production knives need to appeal to as many people as possible so that sales can be sustained and the product can be profitable. Outside of this realm, custom makers are worth a premium because they deliver a product that is often very different from anything available from production knife companies. Because these designs may appeal to fewer people, there is an associated higher cost as they cannot do cost-saving measures like manufacturing a particular knife on a massive scale. At a smaller production scale, this means makers can often offer personalization and customizations that a production knife could never offer.
>>
>>33524002
That Neon knife has damn good materials like titanium, M390, multi-row bearings, a glass-smooth action, and goddamn classy, simple, yet distinct aesthetic that nobody else but Shirogorov offers based on my aesthetic tastes.

Sure I could probably get a different small knife that has those things, but it won't have the Shiro aesthetic. I want that aesthetic because it makes me happy to see it, and I'm willing to pay for it so I don't have to pull out a knife I don't like nearly as much. Buying something you aren't completely happy with is like a masochistic reminder to yourself that you didn't get what you actually wanted. I'm in a financial position to get what I want, so why the fuck not?

Well what ever you think. I have plenty of ball bearing knives, including budget CRKT ones, and plenty more with nylon and phosphor bronze washers. I can definitively say, given proper lubrication and tuning, all of the ball bearing ones are smoother. Now they do require a little bit more maintenance to keep really smooth, but any knife does anyways. Hence the initial photo of my ZT 0562cf, when I was cleaning it after about a year of use.

Very nice. What is the large Busse in the upper right corner? Is it pre Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat? I did not know you could get a Busse with a molded handle.

>>33522876
Really it depends on your budget, if you want really cheap, a Mora Companion is only $15ish. For hunting the Kershaw Diskin Hunter, comes to mind, they are really nice, about $45, shit sheath though. Most American made Buck are pretty good. I'm not a hunter though, so I'm not familiar with the needs of a skinning knife, rather the needs of an outdoors-man.

As for steel, at the low end you will get the most out of Carbon steel. If you are in a very humid environment, or around water, you may consider stainless. If you want a really great deal and can swing $90ish, the Cold Steel master in CPM-3v is a hell of a knife, and 3V is one of the best fixed blade steels on the market.

>That doesn't speak for the knife at all.

If you approach a knife like a Shiro asking what makes it better than a cheaper knife, you probably aren't the type of person that's going to buy one. Above the $400 mark, most midtech, small-scale production/semi-custom knives increase marginally in quality compared to the amount spent. They occupy this area of the knife world that straddles the line between collectors and mid-end to high-end users and Shirogorov knives sit near the top of that stack (along with many others) in terms of cost and, at least from what I've handled, quality.

Do I own one? Fuck no. They're simply way too easy to flip where I post, and I've never lost money on one.

I would argue diminishing returns really starts hitting hard around $100-$250. When it comes out to viewing a folder as a flat out tool, anything more than a Cold Steel Code4 for heavy use or a Spyderco Endura for slicing, is really needless.

I, however, do not view knives as just tools. It's a hobby, a collection, it can be an investment, heck it is art.

This is the distinction, does one like knives for their utility or more?

I don't understand the push back that the high end knife market gets so much, people who are not just confused to as why one knife is $1,000, but seem to actually be insulted by it.

It's the same reason people buy $4,000 watches, $100,000+ cars, and so on. Even if it means they have to lower their general quality of living to afford their hobby, if they get more joy out of it than eating out.

I only own two customs, two Gavkos I bought used (pic related). And that's only because I'm a college fag, and I flat out can not afford to drop $300+ on a single knife. Even considering I pay for this hobby with my sharpening.

Exactly why I'm not into guns, I can't afford another hobby. At lest my knife stuff mostly pays for it self with sharpening... heck I've been fighting the urge to get a Motorcycle for 2 years now.

A house mate has guns for home defense, and when I want to go shooting, it's with him. I live in Nj, so CC is not an option. So I don't need to own guns.

Once I graduate, eventually I plan on moving out into PA with my gf. Maybe then, and when I land a good job, I'll get into guns. For now, I'm good with knives and sharpening.... and swords... flashlights... audio... gaming computers... *sigh* just titanium stuff in general, just last week I bought a Titanium keychain lantern, and 3 Tritium vials to go with it.

Why go out to eat at a nice italian restaurant when Chef Boyardi is the same thing, right?

Why buy that Corvette when a Chevy Cruze can also drive you around just fine?

Why spend the extra money on those high end work boots when Walmart makes shoes that also cover your feet?

Why buy that 60 inch 4k TV when your 20 inch 720p one can display the same image?

Why buy nice jeans when you can just wear sweatpants all the time?

Why buy any other gun when a Hi-Point can do the same job?

>>
>>33525965
That faggot isn't talking about a 700$ knive vs a 100$ one. He's talking about a high-end or even 100$ knife compared to a fucking Gerber. I actually would never spend more than 200 on a knife.

The difference would be blade sharpness, blade material, edge retention, rust resistance, fit/finish, weight, aesthetics.

A $10 Gerber would be inferior in all of these attributes compared to say, a Paramilitary II or something.

>Wait until you have a good job with income before starting something new.

Yeah pretty much, I am a young fag, 21.

I'm very lucky that I don't need to worry about taking college loans. Because I got lucky with some scholarships, been working since I was 15 or so (under the table at first), I've been with a more premium landscaping company for a few years in between semesters, I was lucky enough to have a car passed down to me, and a surprising amount of sharpening income. But most importantly, I'm only a few years away from having a usable engineering degree.

I may have a large collection, but it's built up over 8ish years. Really my out going costs on stuff like knives, swords, EDC stuff, ect... is only a few grand a year. All things accounted for, I still have a fair amount going into savings.

Why I just went into all that detail... idk... but you (>>33526164) should get it, but really not take financial advice from me kek.

>>

Nope, just an Al Mar Eagle HD with a laminated ZPD-189 blade. This one was a Cutlery Shoppe exclusive in Blue, they also had Orange ones.

To my knowledge Kershaw has never been involved with Al Mar.

And the fixed blade is a Cold Steel Recon Tanto.

Oh cool, I did not see that. I've not really looked much into the new for 2017 besides Cold Steel, ZT, and Condor.

They look nice, but I wish they would have more photos, to get a sense of the thickness. Al Mar knives are really good for being very thin, these look like the have contoured handles. I would not mind handling one at some point to see how it compares to my Eagle. I think they would look better if they offered them in other colors though.

I'm curous if it's a typo or not. The AM 3 and AM 4 seem to be very close in size. I would think would be a 3" and the other a 4" like the Falcon and the Eagle.

Pic related is a Hawk and Eagle. The Hawk was in for sharpening, not mine.
>>
>>33525066

>I would argue diminishing returns really starts hitting hard around $100-$250.

Pretty much, though most guys I know get to a point where everything from $120 production knives up to midtechs and customs appeals equally. I'm pretty much at that point myself, thinking about a custom Olamic Wayfarer while I wait for them to release the Swish and picking up a ZDP-189 Stretch 2.

Guys. Hay guyz. Can someone link or show a comparison on edge retention among the following steels from best to worse? Tanks

>>
>>33531328
And I forgot M390. Missing any other good premium/super steels?

>>33531328
>Hey guys!
>Can you do all the research on knives for me? Its super hard XD
This is what you come off as.
>>
>>33531328
>Edge retention
You have to specify under what kind of cutting tasks for the term be meaningful.

The answers will be very different if the use case is push cutting soft materials against a wood cutting board vs. slicing cardboard.

Not only that, but in general steels better able to resist microscopic chipping and rolling at the apex (which helps in push cutting) tend to have worse abrasive wear resistance (useful for carboard slicing type work) and vice versa.
>>
>>33531328
Thats such a specific and difficult request that its not worth anyone's time to explain it.

Too many factors. The heat treatment is a big variable. Along with what you are cutting, even different cardboard can drastically effect edge retention. And the finish of the edge as well, if it's course or polished.

A big factor is edge geometry as well. A knife with a very thin geometry and a thin edge, while cutting soft mediums, has an inherent advantage of edge holding over the same steel at a wider angle.

Finer grain steels generally have worse edge retention in the traditional sense compared to higher wear resistant, large carbide steel, but they have less edge stability, so at thin angles they have worse edge retention than a finer grain steel.

Honestly, unless you want to do a lot of research to determine all the factors that make any given knife a meaningful edge holding value... Just consider all of those steels are very high end, and don't let any of them be a deal breaker. One of my favorite all around steels is CPM-3v, even though I only have a single knife in it currently.
>>
>>33521108
I've done a bit of research into them but have never handled one. Supposedly they're well-built and can take a beating, but they handle poorly. Generally for budget swords, Hanwei is recommended. Also for super budget if you just want something large and sharp to swing around, the Windlass Cobra Steel lineup is good for the money, specifically the Kindjal. $50 for 10xx carbon (I can't remember the number, I think it's 1060 but don't quote me), full tang with rubberized handle. Basically the cheapest beater with decent handling that will teach you how to handle a longer bladed object and won't fall apart unless you're trying to cut down a tree.
>>
>>33531328
Maxamet, S110V, S90V, M390/CTS-204P/CPM-20CV, Elmax, ZDP-189, S35VN, N690. Technically ZDP holds a working edge longer than M390 but it's more of a toothy edge than a real fine one, that's why I rated it lower. Obviously results will vary depending on what you cut.

The Earth Brown S35vn ones yes. They are limited production, only made in small batches. When retailers get them in, you normally only have a day or two to order before they sell out.

Unless you are collection PM2s or really like brown, why bother with it? Why not just get a regular one or one of the burple s110v ones?

I still haven't gotten anything since last thread. I had a look at GunBroker, and setting up an account was too complicated for something I would only want to do one-off and Paypal is not available... Which is disappointing since I've seen plenty of Type 2 bayonets for neat prices (though exchange rates and shipping can always escalate the price so it makes it pointless :c)

Still hoping someone can help me out here.

The s35vn was my second spyderco and my first PM2. Not sure what they did differently on it but it's got the best detent of the three. Probably because I've used it more than the s110v and m390. The m390 is a case queen though, never plan on using it unless I buy another one.

I haven't seen them come back in stock anywhere recently, but I wish you luck.

Thanks.

It's a Spyderco Tuff, actually my favorite knife of the 40ish folders I own. It is amazingly ergonomic.

They retailed for around $250 when they were in production, they stopped making them either last year or two years ago. Have gone up in price quite a lot the past year, but I'm not going to let go of mine.
>>

>>
Is there a reason I should/shouldn't get this over an ESEE-3?

Or, what is the best etc fixed knife I can get on a $100 budget.

I like the thickness of the HEST in particular.
>>
>>33552244
It's too thick for its length, you lose cutting ability for negligible durability especially in a knife you can't really baton with and it'll be heavier than it needs to be.

That retarded bottle opener in the spine significantly weakens the blade.
>>
>>33552244

You can get a RAT 3, but I don't think it'd be as good. I went for a RAT 3 and the handle is too short for my hand without using the finger choil. That little extra handle is worth it.

>>33552309

>>
>>33552297
>>33552244
Totally forgot the "recommend an EDC knife for me" part.

For what I do for EDC, ESEE's CR2.5 is pretty much perfect.
>1095 steel with known-good heat treat, uncoated
>full grind
>fairly thin spine
>modest finger groove/choil
>good multipurpose blade shape
>good overall length

Honestly if I could find a knife with the blade shape of Buck's Packlite caper but with better-than-420HC steel and actual handle scales I'd be in heaven, but afaik nobody makes one even remotely similar.
>>
>>33552497

Mini-grip sheepsfoot?
>>
>>33552859
That's actually pretty close, yeah. Would prefer a fixed blade though.
>>
>>33552924

Buck Open Season Caper. Pretty close and in S30V. Not a fan of the handle though.
>>
>>33552937
Ehh. Not as close in blade shape as the mini grip.

And yah, pass on that handle.
>>
>>33552999

What you'll want to look for are sheepsfoot or modified sheepsfoot blade shapes.
>>
>>33552999

Actually, just look for caper blade styles, lol. There's a few on knife center, but nothing exact.
>>
>>33553086
I think I'll just use my Packlite as a template and make my own. I can get 1/8" barstock D2 from the local welding supply store on the cheap and there's an industrial heat-treat place near me (they mainly do automotive shit but have been known to do knife blanks, and they're competent).

Now I just need to decide on a handle material. I've got a bunch of elk "ivory" (antlers) laying around from collecting sheds, would be classy and fairly good grip.

If a customer disassembles one of our knives and reassembles properly so its adjustment and operation are consistent with original factory specifications, the knife’s warranty remains in effect. If, however, a knife is disassembled and reassembled improperly, the proper operation of the knife and its component parts could easily be compromised. That would void the knife’s warranty.

Nice.

Awesome! It's not something that really effected me much because I've always used high end Wiha Torx bits, but I'm glad they are making this change. Maybe it has, because I got a Ti military used with stripped screws, but Spyderco sent me new ones.

Hmmm That's a pretty small budget, and that's a pretty small knife. If it due to legality or what? Typically you would want about a 3.5" blade, but here are some that are just about 3" that fit your budget;
Ontario RAT 2
Kershaw Chill
Kershaw OSO Sweet
I highly recommend a Opinel No. 7 or 8 if you don't need a pocket clip or single handed opening, and they are only like $15

Typically for hiking, it's nice to have a small fixed blade or neck knife. If you can, n that case, for that budget, a Mora Companion ($15) or a CRKT Minimalist (neck knife) for $20.

In fact, I highly recommend the Minimalist. I carry mine all the time when I'm in the woods.

Sand it to 2k grit and give it a few coats of tung oil, sanding in between. Hand rub with beeswax. It won't look like that shotty, though. The slab of english walnut they used to make that could have cost over $1k.
>>
>>33554918
That may have a better grain pattern in general than a Walnut Opinel. But maybe.

I'm not too farmilar with wood working, I have cousins who are really into it, take this with a grain of salt.

This could be a, french oil grain treatment, or something like that. Basically sand it down, and then sand up to 600 or so grit. Then take some medium or fine steel wool, drench it in Tongue oil (maybe boiled Linseed oil would work for a lighter color) and continue sanding down the the finest steel wool. Then wipe 1 a day for a week with the oil.

Idk if that is what it is, but maybe.
