Had trouble putting in mags into my WASR, dude helps me out then lets me shoot his better AK (nitride finish, nice bolt, muzzle break). Fuck man. That thing had almost no recoil in comparison

Then one time I shot my AR-15 for the first time and didn't know these things should be ''wet'' or else they'll jam with steel cased ammo (or I was just unlucky). It was clean, but not wet. Of course, it fires the first round and can't extract the casing. Guy helps me out, gets the local gunsmith to fix it and then the same guy next to me shooting cleans the mother fucker and lubes it up and then it fired without a hitch the rest of the time.

Asking to fire a few shots after you've chatted with the guy for a while and know he's cool, that's one thing.

Asking to fire a couple of mags, especially when you don't have that ammo type with you, that's a bit much unless he's a good friend or you're handing him a good chunk of cash up front to cover his ammo.

Look here's how to do it politely. Bring ammo, I'll take 7.62x39 to the range with me when I'm not bring my sks, .40 and .45 even though I mostly shoot 9mm. I always have .308 and 5.56 to shoot myself. Chat the guy up a little during range cold, ask him about it and listen. People like to talk. If he's not receptive abort mission before you ask. Then assuming that you have appropriate ammo say, "hey I've got some x ammo with me, mind if I run some through your gun?" Followed quickly by, "unless you don't really do that, I'd completely understand." If he says yes. Load one of his magazines full of your ammo, shoot fifteen rounds (assuming 30) take out mag, clear chamber and leave on the table followed by a thank you and a compliment to his gun. As a human being you need to remember to expect to hear the word no and accept that it's not your property and you have no right to it.

See the difference OP is that I offered to let the guy shoot my rifle, not the other way around. Also it was only 5 rounds of steel cased tula .308 which is like $2.50 these days so not nearly as close to the cost of a couple mags. My range has a lot of old guys and collectors who offer other people the opportunity to shoot their guns since they like to show off their collections, especially the old guys who use the range for the majority of their social interaction. So I try to pay it forward and let some of the guys I talk to put a few rounds through mine if I have ammo to spare.
