As I said elsewhere, my Maadi was mostly bought to keep myself from dropping $900 on a Tula AKM kit and spending a few years and thousands of dollars trying to make a close-to-factory AKM like I'm doing with the AK-74.

I sold my AK63ds since it had a crooked barrel and what looked to be a canted rear sight. It bugged me and I didnt feel like sending it somewhere to be adjusted. i didnt want to shoot 5.45 bc im heavily into 5.56. theyre close enough for me to count that as a minus, as in having to stock yet another caliber. 7.62x39 on the other hand, i already shot with my sks(s) so it made sense to go with it.

Anybody else have a 4 pocket leather mag pouch like this?
The pockets on the left are so small I basically have to hammer the mags in and once they're in I have to use pliers and a pry bar to get them out.
The pockets on the right are so big the mags will drop right in, and if I turn it over they will fall right out.

Is the only current option for cheaper AKs now a WASR?

I talked to KVAR customer support and he basically told me those fixed stock Arsenals are back ordered to all hell and it would be months before I could get one, the converted Veprs on top of being $150 more are out of stock and I don't like how they look without a bayo lug and cleaning rod. All US made AKs aside from PSA ones are shit and even the PSA ones are occasionally questionable.

It's not so much a matter of being unlined, but it's that the steel they are made of is ridiculously soft.
They used barrels made by ESS. Some quick searches will tell you all you need to know about the AMD builds with ESS barrels. (not just the 65 but the 63 has the same barrel)

There's a guy selling a bulgarian 5.56 AK with 10 mags for $1k half an hour away from me. Does anybody have any experience with these? I really like the AK platform and would love one that fires a nato standard cartridge but I've read some tidbits that suggest the action is too violent for brass 5.56 cartridges. Is that just fuddlore or is there truth to it?

The soft steel by itself isn't the problem. Ess makes barrels for ar's and none of them droop after a mag.

The soft steel makes the install of the barrel more difficult, as it will be more prone to bending.

The real problem with that rifle is clearview. The gas ports are countersunk INTO the rifling, as opposed to a propper gas port with a slight chamfer. The softer steel WILL erode the gas port and the rifle will become seriously overgassed.

MelD did a few vids on YouTube where a couple of rifles were taken apart. There were some other dodgy aspects with the build.

If it's anything like a typical 74 brake, the Tantal brake should come off by depressing a pin on the FSB, then just unthreading it by hand. The parts that are pinned on are...pretty much everything else, unfortunately.

Triangle folder is a no-go in that configuration. The Tantal lacks the left side locking latch and also has an incompatible rear trunnion (triangles fold to the left, Tantals fold right if memory serves correctly). You might be able to get a fixed stock for it, but I'm not too well-versed in Tantals.

It's not pinned but it is different then your ak74m types. As for the triangle, they use a standard fixed stock rear trunion so it will require welding and other metal work. If your looking for a slr104 fr rifle I would suggest flipping your rifle and buying one. Combloc folding stock parts run about $250. Add that to the projected cost of the barrel your in brand new 104 territory.
