IIRC it was a combination of the Tacoma already being made and sold for the American market, as well as safety concerns from the Hilux and Land Cruiser's stiff suspension. It has a habit of rolling fairly easily as a result, despite the retardedly-simple and rock hard suspension being one of the many reasons they're so popular in the developing world

Something I've wondered for a while now is what happens to technicals after the war ends? I'd imagine that in Africa or durkastan that they're mothballed and come out for the next conflict. If the conflict even truly ends.

Technicals are by nature improvised though. Ones like this are purpose-built vehicles. LRDG is about as close as I could find to a military unit composed of technicals, but like I mentioned, differ from Chadian tactics in their role as screening and harassing forces targeting the softer spots of the Axis flank, not the coup de main of the entire army going straight for the jugular.

That said, there probably were plenty of improvised and makeshift vehicles during and between the two world wars, but I couldn't find enough written accounts to give them space, and this WAS ostensibly a paper on African history to begin with.

MG1/MG3 feed trays, top covers and boosters are fucking everywhere in the world. The problem is the barrels. Steyr imported barrels are selling for $350-$400 on gunbroker right now. There are also people turning down 1919 308 barrels to spec and selling those for $250

Operating them on the streets depends on the state. My dad used to have a 1940s era jeep and we would drive it around the countryside in california with a replica 1919 mounted in the back. Cops would always try to fuck with us and ticket us for shit like lacking seatbelts and having a machinegun strapped to our jeep. Unfortunately for the shithead cops there was a ww2 vet pretty high up in their department who would always smite their attempts to ticket/arrest us. We would also take the thing to parades, ww2 themed events,etc at the request of the city.

I would avoid driving around public roads with a machinegun mounted up, unless you are 150% sure about the laws and are ready to defend yourself legally

Yes, it is highly illegal to set up an electronic or otherwise remote fired trigger that does not require the use to operate the trigger himself for each pull. Even if you clicked a button to take each shot, it's illegal. If no electronic aspect is to be found for a remote trigger, such as you mounting a gun to a table and tying a string to the trigger, then it's perfectly okay. Though it wouldn't help you in court.

I dunno, I've had an idea for a while now to try and build some sort of turret inside one of those cargo boxes that sit on SUV rails. Pic related. Remove the latch and add an arm to open the lid, give the turret a camera and control it from a tablet inside the vehicle, that sort of thing. The point of technicals is to be able to fire on the move at hostile combatants. It's the lightest of combat vehicles, and significantly cheaper (and most often faster) than any armored vehicles you'll find. In fact, with the high abundance of RPG-7s and other similar guided and unguided shoulder fired weapons, a technical is probably safer to move around in than an old tank or APC, since those have proven to be giant metal death traps in the middle east anyway.
