it's essentially a wasteland. there's a reason why we tested the bomb and Los Alamos and Sandia laboratories are out there. settlers stopped there on the journey out west was because the dry climate was great for people with emphysema. other than a couple oil locations and a few coal mines, it has no valuable resources.
the economies in rural towns are driven purely by the energy industry, and if that goes away due to nuclear energy or the oil simply drying up, there will be zero resources there.
there are little Mexican villages sprinkled across the state which are actually very cool. self-sustaining without need for outside water or food. many Mexicans in nm are actually great people who love America. lots of them fled California to escape the Los Angeles gangbanger bullshit. not that it isn't prevalent of course.
the natives are cool and have a rich unique culture. but it's not cool. they turn on the television and see cool white culture, cool black culture, cool asian culture but it's like they don't exist. so they struggle with identity which leads to depression. on top of that we broke them as a people and made them completely dependent on the government by putting them on reservations.
breaking bad is actually pretty accurate, except the violence is 100 times worse. like the ginger kid who lived in the crack house. what breaking bad didn't show was that the mother would probably sell his boipussi for $10 a hit to fuel her habit.

a lot of Navajo people literally live in third world environments. the reservations have no water so they buy water tanks on trailers that they refill at nearby towns every week or two.
there's an effort to get water lines built in a couple villages but there's not enough funding. most of it is through donations from civilians.
