Knife and knife related topics here. Not sure what number we're actually on so maybe somebody can fix that after this.

Good start. Got to master the bolster making though so they'll sell like hot cakes. Would still buy those to beat on daily.

Side related note. Fairly new to flicking Spyderco knives and already this blurple one owns me for life.

Using the thumb to open a Spyderco like a newfag. It's all in the middle finger flick, I pretty much use it for all my folders (thumb studs included) besides flippers.

whats that? i was thinking of sharpening it and to get rid of the rust, but maybe its better to keep it in the original condition..
>>
>>33091759
Tender love and care. Even if it's a historical piece I would personally clean it up and keep it.
>>
>>33091795
any tips for taking care of it? new to this.. cleaning with vinegar or wd40 seems popular
>>
>>33091831
I doubt it is worth too much, but you may want to confirm it's value first, just oil it in the mean while.

This is my 1907 Enfield Bayonet. It's only worth $70 or so as far as I can tell, with out it's sheath. So I would not feel horrible cleaning it up, but really it's in almost perfect shape besides the wear on the handle.

>>33091866
passed on by family, wont sell and no point checking for value. btw that espada looks very sleek
>>
>>33091883
In that case yeah start by just thoroughly cleaning it with an oil like wd40. Then consider going to some rust polisher like Flitz. Also consider something like Renaissance Wax.

Or there is the cheap, and drastic option; water/oil and steel wool. But that will completely strip the coating as well.

Yeah I like it, I just put it there for size comparison, I tend to use it and the standard SAK.

I love mine because two words: Meme Knife

I got it on sale a year or so ago for like $100. I would argue though that if you were looking to get into a knife fight, for what even rediculous reason, the Espada is very easy to conceal compared to a 17" fixed blade, and believe it or not, it's much faster to deploy than a comparable fixedblade from a concealed position.

Other than that, it's just a lot of fun to play with, as you can see I've got plenty more practical knives.

Yeah I really like the burple s110v blades. I'm probably going to pick up a PM2 and Military in it at some point. Partially because I have no blades in s110v in my collection, and as a knife sharpener, I like to have reference blades... honestly that's just an excuse to buy some knives.

But right now my next knife on the list is the s35vn blue Kershaw Link. Oddly enough, I also have no s35vn blades of my own, despite sharpening many of them, so it's an excuse.

Does it really matter, though? I can see that you lose some grip stability in the split second you use your thumb instead of your middle finger, but what else about someone's choice of finger-flipping makes it inferior? It's a split second, and anything short of being in a self-defense scenario armed with only your pocket knife seems rather trivial.

Yeah, I know we've talked about the Skyline before, it's a great knife, I mean I own 4 variations after all... It's also my go to sub $50 light edc knife recommendation... However that may change, I really like the look of the Kershaw Link, and it felt nice when I got to handle one. I'm going to get one of the more expensive s35vn ones and see how well it holds up.

>>33099199
Checked..
I love the 119, it's such a classic. Feels a little odd in hand though, all the classic handled bucks do honestly. But they are nice knives, just not recommended for heavy tasks. I'm thinking about getting the Buck 124 at some point, I wish they made a 119 with a handle like the 124. (pic related)

The kershaw Skyline is a great starting point, that's where I started 7ish years ago. I own 4 right now (pic related). But I would also strongly consider the Kershaw Link with aluminum handles. I handled one the other day and was blown away by the quality, considering the price point. Both are made in the US and under $50. Also the Cold Steel medium Voyagers if you want a really strong knife, and the RAT 1, are also good for sub $50. If you can swing $70 though, I can not recommend the Cold Steel Code4 enough.

Yeah it's just a really good knife, it's my go to hard use folder, although it may not be comfortable for some peoples hands, it is very slim and wide.

>>33100016
They have out standing fit and finish, quality control, they were the first knives to use a frame lock (or RIL, Reeve Integral Lock), and they pretty much modernized the "tactical" folding knife. Not to mention they have one of the smoothest actions of any knife. And personally, the design is very beautiful, the lines are very well thought out, and a lot of knife collectors and designers agree with this.

ALL of this being said; They are complete shit from a functional perspective. And I'm not even talking price. I'm talking like compared to a $30 Kershaw, they are shit. He runs his Steel WAY too soft, to the point where it has poor edge stability, many people have warped their edges while cutting heavy rope, that is $5 chines knife level crap. And the lock being so smooth comes at a cost, it does not take well to shock or static loads, as Cold Steel showed, and I trust their testing not to be a complete lie.
>>
>>33100017
Yeah it's way out of my price range too but for the complete opposite reasons, I use my knife a lot but a lot of it is the sort of hecked up stuff no sane man does with an actually nice knife so it's just sharpened crowbars for me

So Tigon is a pretty neat knife, insanely sharp out of the box and a good blade shape, but the handle design is not the comfiest around which seems to be a reoccurring problem in Kizers, and it's a very traditional flipper in a sense that you need to flick your wrist if you want it to open all the way
>>
>>33098665
check out youtube for a video test of sebongo's lock strength. Or lack thereof. That's what you get when your big name brand is so used to marketing to idiots it thinks quality control and proper knife design doesn't matter.
>>
>>33099430
>>33100017
If your knife usage can be summed up as "maybe" I'd suggest looking at some neat little slipjoints like douk douks and what have you. They're hardly impressive blades but they're better than nothing (unless you're a complete mongoloid, then they're worse than nothing because you'll cut your fingers off) and won't take up a lot of room in your pocket

The buck 119 is a great knife to have. It can do just about any job you throw at it and sharpens really easily. Plus it's sexy as fuck.
>>
>>33101829
i wouldn't get that excited. It might be a decent hunting knife, and it can cut things like cordage/food, but to be a truly great knife, it just doesn't have a very good design.

Handles with guards are not very useful for a working knife.

So you like it all around? I like some of their designs, but I'm still not sure how I feel about spending so much on a Chines blade, and that business strategy in general; that is making very high end knives in china. I will have to give it a try at some point. I guess I'm okay with Spyderco making their highest end knives in Taiwan, so I should be okay with this.

>>33101416
I do trust Cold Steel is not lying about it's performance. More so I also trust the videos from Jdavis where he managed to not just roll, but warp the whole edge of a Sebenza in a cut test... That being said I think you may have miss diagnosed the problem. Their QC is pretty much second to non (for the price at lest). More so the knife is designed very well, unfortunately not for strength. Their flaw is trying to be too much of what they are known for (smooth) that they have lost track of what makes a utilitarian knife good.
>>
>>33101168
Well considering there were so many knife threads since these were labeled incorrectly we can just make the next one 79.

Mine hasn't been sharpened since I got it, I don't use it much and the s90v holds an edge for a long time against the stuff I do cut like foam or cardboard or paper.

Any tips on sharpening? Are you using stones or a system? I've been thinking about buying a system because I'm not coordinated enough to keep a consistent angle on a stone.

My sharpening pretty much pays for my blade hobby. So I've got a lot of equipment. My primary set up is called a Wicked Edge, but it costs around $800 in the spec I have. I use a lot of other equipment as well.

For beginners I really recommend the spyderco sharpmaker dor the final edge and free hand for the rough work.

It's called a Hamon, and as >>33108414 said, it's left over from the heat treat. It's a bit of a style thing, the smiths can make different patterns depending on how they apply the insulating clay to the spine for the final quench. Also, there is an art to sword polishing, the polisher can bring out the hamon in different ways.

The one you have in your pic is a fake hamon, probably put on by a wire brush. But having a real hamon is not always a sign of quality, it is the traditional method, not the strongest way. Modern mono tempered katanas are more durable, and often preferred over traditional ones for practice cutting. I have a Mono Temper Katana.

If you are interested in learning to sharpen freehand I would recommend you start by buying some cheap knives to practice on, buying a Norton India IB8 combination coarse/fine oilstone, some mineral oil, and watching this video and practicing what you are shown until you can reliably replicate the results shown at the end:

I'm thinking I'll do 15 and micro bevel it once it dulls a bit. But that's going to have to wait, I'm over my head in Calc and Physics studies atm.

Oh and say, you have any suggestions for a nice big single layer low grit water stone? I'm getting more into free hand, and I'm tired of using my giant Norton Tri stone for the rough work. I need some low grit water stones.

I bought a 800 girt King stone on Amazon today, maybe a bit close to my 1,200 grit... King also has a good looking 240 grit, but it's a big one, and I don't feel like putting $70 on a single stone right now.

I have a 6k and 8k, might look for a 3ish k as well.

One of my current projects is regrinding and mirror polishing the grind of a Ontario SP-10... My 1200 is too fine for getting it started.
>>
>>33109114

If you want a price conscious low grit option, I would consider the Norton 220x. It's a loose bond stone that will have to be flattened frequently, but in exchange it cuts faster and the mud it forms helps burr minimization.

If you are willing to splurge, the Sigma Power Select II 240x is the fastest low grit waterstone in existence due to being made of silicon carbide rather than aluminum oxide and having almost no binder at all. It wears very fast, but the cutting speed is astronomical even on steels like M4, ZDP189 and Maxamet.

Another pricier option, but one in the harder, less muddy, slower wearing style would be the Naniwa Chosera 400. Its a very good stone and a good option for jumping right to 1,200 afterwards. If I was getting the Norton or SPS-II I'd go 220 (or 240) -> 800 -> 1,200.

Also note: If you get the Norton or SPS-II DO NOT try to flatten them with a DMT plate as you will ruin the diamond plate. Only an Atoma 140 diamond plate or loose SiC grit on a glass plate can be used to flatten waterstones that coarse.

I think I may give the Naniwa a shot, thanks for the advice. I'll get one when the semester ends and I'm back at work, or maybe if I do a few more batches of customer knives. Although right now the next batch is going into a Pelican 1600 to store all of my Wicked Edge and Sharpmaker stuff. I'm tired of having it laying around all over my work bench, and having to wrap up all the stones, and put them delicately in a bag when I have to transport it all.

I know it is a bit sacrilegious in the sharpening "community"... But eventually I'm going to get a Tormek T-8, just from a business stand point. It can't get a knife as sharp as a wicked edge or practiced free hand, but it can get a knife sharp enough very fast. Most of my customers are Chefs, and I could offer them a lower price, while greatly improve my hourly sharpening income, keeping the supper mirror edges as a premium offering.
>>
>>33109468

The Tormek is fine in my books as its low speed and has active liquid cooling so there should be no concerns about de-tempering the edge.

Because I only sharpen my own knives, its just faster for me to freehand on waterstones and then microbevel using a solid non-friable stone or strop with a coarse particulate abrasive. I usually just use a Sigma Power Select II 1,000 and then jump straight to putting on a microbevel in the ~4k to 8k range.

Because the microbevel cuts under the scratch pattern of the edge edge bevel, you can skip grits fairly easily.

Yeah, I've decided that I want to start, for the most part, standardizing the edges on at lest my folding knives, and keep a maintenance chart (edge angle, sharpening date, ect...) in the top of my Pelican case. I think for the most part I'm going to mirror polish most of them at 15ish DPS and then micro bevel them latter on, just to minimize material lose and sharpening time over the long run.

>>33109582
That's a good price range. I really love the Cold Steel Code4, it gets a lot of things right for $75ish. I carry mine if I know I am going to be using my knife a lot. Also the Spyderco Manix 2, if they are even still sub $100. The Kershaw Link in s35vn, I'm buying one soon. There's a lot of options.
>>
>>33109694

That sounds like a sensible approach. I tend to do something broadly similar in that I usually shape the edge bevels on my pocket knives around 10 degrees per side and leave them like that so I can micro-bevel them when I need them at whatever grit is suitable for the task.
>>
>>33109747
The only reason I don't run my edges that thin is because I've done some pretty abusive things before, when trying to reach into an engine bay to cut a zip-tie keeping good edge alignment is not always possible. Granted normally I carry something like my Code4 or RAT1 while at work, so it's not a tragedy if I fuck it up. Also the WE does have some angle limitations, on most knives around 13 DPS is the limit with out getting creative. This is something I would use the Tormek for, to really thin the bevel.

By chance... you happen to have any knowledge on sword sharpening? I've maintained my Katana for 7 years of on and off cutting with ceramic rods... now that I just got a $700 longsword, it's time to figure out a solution. The go to in the sword community is the Work Sharp, even for collectors of thousand dollar+ swords. I rather not, then again, I don't want to free hand 37 inched (times two) every time I need to sharpen it.

eh id say$40-$30ish. you have a few solid gems in that price range. They arent amazing, but they have a lot of the important details right
>>
>>33109919

Yeah, my EDC knives mostly get used for a mix of food prep, cardboard, clamshell packaging, consumer grade zip ties, etc. so I can run very thin edges without issue.

Mind you, I also choose my steels to suit the edge geometries I like (i.e. I stay away from high chromium, high vanadium content steels).

Can't say I have any experience with sword sharpening, unfortunately, so I can't really help you there.
>>
>>33110035
peerrrrrrsonally, I beat tha FUCK out of my knives. For an ~eighty dollar budget, I'd get an Ontario RAT, a Kershaw Skyline, and something small, a Kershaw Pico or Shuffle. Or Case Peanut.

No sense to me having a ONE AND ONLY high dollar knife. If used, it'll get dull. If it gets dull it becomes useless. Better to have back up while you find time to get around to sharpening it.

Unfortunately there aren't too many non-waterstone options for higher grits. Really the only ones I can think of are the Spyderco M/F/UF benchstones (I'd put the grit equivalents at 3,000/8,000/12,000) and the DMT EF and EEF benchstones (they are about like 1750 grit and 4000 grit respectively.

It looks really nice, almost like a Burnly Custom Kwaiken. It looks like he just did a lot of dermal to it, and then anodized and stone washed.

The "nuking" is not a formal term, it's pretty much only used with in custom/modified knife circles. So the definition changes, generally it is an anodized (involves chemicals and electricity) Ti or Aluminum and then a combination of different stone washes.

I'm a fan of not just the Boker Kawaiken, but the kwaiken style in general. I was going to get my first one customized, but it's not really my thing, I rather put the time and money into other knives.

I'm new to sharpening, I found a bunch of water stones at a yard sale and bought them for pretty cheap. I've watched enough tutorials on how to use them, but I can't seem to find any easy to understand information on how to sand the stones flat. The ones I bought do have a little curve in them.

What do you use to level a normal, run of the mil water stone? And do you have to use different ones for different grits?
>>
>>33116595

You can either use a very coarse diamond plate (E.g. DMT XXC or Atoma 140) or you can use a glass plate and loose silicon carbide abrasive powder. If you search YouTube for "how to flatten a waterstone" you will get demonstrations that include how to draw a pencil grid on the stone as well.

Thanks a lot for answering my questions! I've been looking for well over a year to see what this guy has done to his. Apparently he doesn't ever answer questions...

I figured he meant anodized when he said "anno tank", but wasn't sure. I found this on BHQ listed as the Kwaiken Tactical, so I think I'll go with that and end up stonewashing it myself. I'd like to replicate the look on the scales themselves, but I'll take a look around if I can just get blanks and do them myself ala dremel as you said.

This'll hopefully be babbys' first knife. Thanks!

All of those are factory stock, well besides the edge, if that counts. I think the one you are looking at is the Original Kwaiken, it's the first one that came out, I bought it with in a few months of the launch, at lest 4 or 5 years ago now. Before the they had a flipper and just a thumb plate. It's Micarta Scales, I think they are still in production.

I favorite one, and maybe my most commonly carried knife, is the Tuxedo Kwaiken, it was a blade HQ exclusive, not longer being made. The handles are all Titanium (well and carbon fiber). Pic related
