Recently started using a Lardy Snickers sling moving from my old MS1. Not a bad sling...nothing revolutionary. Like that it's featherweight and really like how smooth yet solid the sliding mechanism is.

Also, getting close to finishing up this belt build. Any input/suggestions /gq/?

I've been told to ditch the kneepads, why? Elbow pads I know are stupid shit, but I've found the knee pads to actually be helpful, especially when taking a knee on a range covered in empty brass, etc.

New earpro is gonna be way low on list of things to buy.

Have a sling for rifle, I just remove slings and most other accessories that don't hold a zero from my guns, makes it easier to store.

I have a camelbak in my ruck. (Don't have a assault pack) figured the canteen would be a great way to pack some water if I'm going with my ruck

I'm going to keep it simple. I have a minuscule amount of medical training, going to keep it to the basics. Gauze, pressure bandage, 2 pack of chest seals and a tourniquet. Myabe an NPA if I'm feeling froggy. I've been instructed on their proper use (when and how), but still don't like the idea of making the call to insert one.

>>33075601
Same boat. I keep a folder in the pocket and that should suffice for me. The multitool I find myself using all the time when it comes to shooting. Adjusting sights/mounts, field repair/maintenance, gripping and ripping the odd casing that gets stuck somewhere.

>>33075669
I have, but talking to a few people who use those pouches they are not quite as solid as I want. Really looking to make a fairly all around rigid rig here, empty or full. I have some spare soft pistol mag pouches from someone else already that could do the same job if I go that route. Neat design from BFG though with how they shrink when empty.

I was instructed to NEVER use an NPA on someone suspected of taking severe head trauma, which I would assume they have if they were unconscious. Generally speaking it's obviously to be used when the airway is restricted from sort of trauma. That being said I'm no EMT nor a field medic, hence my hesitation to even pack one. If I did it would mainly be to have it accessible to someone who DOES know what they are doing. Given I'm not .mil, I think it would be likely the person helping me who did know what they were doing is likely to be an EMT with their own bag of them.

What training techniques do you guys do at the range?
>>
>>33076250
Depends on the range. With rifles I'm generally just checking function and working on general precision/accuracy.

With pistols I'll work accuracy and mechanics on the standard range and move to drawing, moving, firing and reloading on the tactical range.

I save all my tactical rifle bad assery for courses and competitions, or practice that shit on private land.

there are these things called gloves you can use

oldschool way was to wear liner gloves for shooting, then heavy polar mittens over them. sew some cordage from the index finger to the pinky area of the mittens, with just a tiny bit of slack. Then when you need to get your gun on, snag the cord on something (like a scope mount), pull the mitt off, and your shooting hand is free to work the safety and press the trigger.

>>
Does one still have enough control in hands off carry mounting a sling at the front of the receiver and to the stock?
>>
>>33077349
OK care to elaborate
>>
>>33077375
>front of the receiver and the stock
Depends entirely on which rifle and how far back on the stock.

>>33077321
>have insulated shooting gloves
>having to take your gloves off to do things
Isn't the whole point of a SHOOTING glove, to be dextrous enough you DONT have to take your gloves off to do things?

Also literally no shooting glove is warm enough for serious cold weather. I found that out the hard way on a January duck hunt, -30*F.
>>
>>33077483
sounds like you should have invested in a hand warmer then.
and no, in my experience with working with gloves that even the more dexterous ones still require you to take them off to do some things when working.
plus I've found loading magazines with gloves on tends to shred them.
>>
I love how your trying to argue that he shouldn't have spent 150 on a hand warmer but you haven't said a word about the 1000$ smock

For the record I appreciate skelts empty wallet, I think the hand warmers are pretty dope, although I think they shoulda made them smaller, unless they have a fk ton of insulation
>>
>>33077311
Wont fit plates that it was designed for!!!
>>
>>33077500
I'm a duck hunter. I have more handwarmers than I have hands, feet, dicks, and balls combined. And I use the shit out of them, because the only thing worse than being out in the cold is sitting in a foot of water out in the cold while it's windy doing fuck-all.

I completely rebuilt engines and computers in cold weather with military issued "leather shell" gloves and thick AF wool glove liners on before. Some of it pretty delicate work. You're either uncoordinated as shit or you're doing some incredibly precise shit that is uncommon as hell. Or playing on your phone.

Yes, loading mags round by round shreds gloves. Use stripper clips and that won't happen.

Whats a good sling for a full length rifle? I've got a 20 inch barrel AR and as of this point I've just been carrying it all by its lonesome. Seems most slings out there cater the the carbines.
>>
>>33077674
Omg, you're even cooler than I thought. Make a trip and I'll start calling you sir too
>>
>>33077321
>not knowing that liner gloves are, by definition, insulated
>taking off your gloves for what reason, jerking off? if you need to push small buttons use a pen or a stick
>unnecessarily taking your hands off your weapon to jam them in a handwarmer when you could just wear mitts.

face it, you want a handwarmer cause you saw some pics of SEALs with them. meanwhile the NATO nations that are experts in winter warfare all issue layered cold-weather glove systems. in arctic warfare environments. Hell, talking to some norwegian infantry vets, they just say to wear wool liners under a normal combat glove down to -15C while active, and down to -5C static.

>>33077375
not my preference. I like for the sling points to be approximately equidistant from the balance point of the rifle.

>>
>>33077820
CAF operations regiment. Sometime lurk threads because friend showed me it.
There's nothing wrong with hand warmers. Wool base layers are fine but frankly wool is overkill even at -10C.
If I'm off in the North or and active I'll layer but it completely depends on your ao. Don't mean to get caught up in this but there's nothing objectively wrong with his setup even if wool base layers are a stronger choice yes

For the record unless you have one of those cool Outdoor Research mits that can peel back then just don't wear mits period. I don't care if you're an arctic research scientist if you plan on using your hands at all not a good idea to have to strip layers just to use your digits.

Norwegians are great dudes. Always enjoy the mountain trips when working with them.
>>
>>33077969
i agree that hand warmers aren't inherently bad but skelly acts like they're the only game in town which is demonstrably false. i'm tired of this faggot acting like he knows about cold weather ops cause he lives in a heated house in canuckistan. that's like me being an expert in jungle warfare cause i lived in SEA for a while.

Skele has a track record of acting like he knows shit when in fact he's mostly clueless and simply has more money than sense
>>
>>33078062
I get my jollies off by trolling trips, and I generally dislike them. As much as I would like to say otherwise, I have never seen skelebore act like he knows much of anything other than how to spend a bunch of money.
>>
>>33078062
Most of us tend to live in heated houses up here. We're not Finnish so it might be hard to get by otherwise.

I suppose. But you might be surprised what a difference going out and playing in the shit for half your life makes when you actually have to live in the stuff. Always makes me laugh what a shock your seals are in for once they pass BUDS and get shipped off to Alaska since they all seem to be from the southern big 3 states where I'm not sure it snows aside from apocalypse situations like in Dallas 3 years ago.

Either way, temperature is a little more subjective and in how you deal with it but what's most important is not getting wet. There are a million ways to layer for -20 and -30 and then wind chill. That's the easy part. What's harder is when you work up a sweat running around doing cool guy stuff in a forest and your legs are soaked and you get frostbite because you forgot to wear gator's or those obnoxious super hightop boots that are a blessing and a curse.

Take it easy guys.

Having cold weather sure helps, but in the end what you actually do matters more than where you live, and i'm half convinced skeletor doesn't do anything outside except take range selfies and roll around in the dirt to make his gear not look brand new.
>>
>>33078184
>but in the end what you actually do matters more...
Not any of the folks you have been talking with to this point, but I think most could agree with this. I'm constantly humbled in the tactical and the survivalist world by folks with loads of experience. We'll gear up to hit the mountains for a week straight. I have some good experience in those conditions for extended periods going back 25+ years, but I'm not an expert by any means. I'll have some of the latest gucci camp kit, some of the best trail kit. Guys who have been to the top of some of the most dangerous mountains in the world or have spent literal months on their own in the harshest environments on Earth are rolling with kit a lot of the REI clergy would consider poorfag. They know how to use it though, decades of doing what few dare do has given them wisdom you can't look up or buy. They can do more in 14 days with 10L of space than I can in 3 days with 40L.

Same goes for shooting. I've been fortunate to know, shoot and be friends with guys who have been at the top of that food chain. They'll bring what many would consider ghetto kit and rifles and do more with it than I could with every top shelf gadget or rifle on the market. Again, can't buy or research that type of feel, experience and skill.

You don't use an NPA on someone who has taken severe facial trauma because you may end up shoving it into the skull, and all that grey good stuff.

If its clear as day that his skull isn't busted open in his nasal cavity, you're good to go. Good reference to see if some dude's head is busted is to look for clear liquid draining from nose or ears. That's cerebral spinal fluid and means his brain is exposed or skull damaged somewhere. It also smells sweet, like Juicy Fruit sinces sugar dense.

Main purpose of an NPA is to open the persons airway if trauma or what have you has obstructed/inflammed/etc. the airway and the guy can't open his own airway. The NPA directs the tube towards the lungs to make a guaranteed airway.

Listen for air travelling through and it should be good.

OPA's work well too but they're uncomfortable as fuck and will fuck a dudes shit up if he has busted teeth in his mouth.

Should I feel bad for just putting leather G3 slings on all my rifles?
>>
>>33077820
I work in the field in arctic conditions. Those things are nice as fuck.

Too many layers can cut of circulation on extremities, so while a wool liner plus insulated leather gloves may work for a bit, it'll cut off circulation eventually.

Most ideal setup is:
Insulated water resistant leather gloves for shooting
Water resistant insulated mittens that are wide enough to casually wear over the aforementioned insulated gloves
Selfactivating hand warmers inside mittens

The tacticool hamdwarmer pouch thing takes the place of the mittens, which is convenient since mittens get caught on everything even when fastened around your back.

To each their own
>>
>>33082541
Yeah I've seen and heard plenty on Comp-tacs. Actually had a standard 1.5 tapered to 1.25 without velcro years and years ago that either got stolen or lost and was my favorite carry belt for concealment. I have no doubts about the quality of their leather, but for a heavy duty rig that would be worn with at least 70% of it outside of the belt loops relying on the velcro, I wasn't 100% on. They have a fairly thin velcro strip and the fact it's 1.25" in front tapered to 1.5" in the back compared to 1.5" in the front tapered to rigger style 1.75" in the back on the HTC made me give HTC the shot here. We'll see how it fairs.

>>
>>33082894
Yeah, but you still have 1.5" to work with and a very comparatively thin strip of velcro. You're talking about 1" of velcro mating with 1.5" of underbelt velcro with .25" on the top and bottom raw leather. I was afraid that would be an issue carrying such a heavy load with a majority not constrained by loops.

With the HTC you are getting 1.75" of outer velcro mating with 1.5" of underbelt velcro.

>>33082820
I read that too. Other anon mentioned hearing they hang low, but given the shoulder straps are adjustable, I'm not sure that would be a huge issue. One of my local spots usually carries first spear soft gear, may go see if I can try one on if I end up making a move.

Mind you, this is all carried weight, no vehicle available so straight rucking around.

Hey gear queers. I want to get a cheek rise for my Thompson Center Contender that I use for deer hunting and hog hunting. Been using the iron sights on it for the longest, but I got a scope for it. Of course the scope is like 2 inches above the bore and now I need to get a cheek riser for it so my eye is inline with the scope. I'm not looking to get some few hundred dollar kit that completely screws into the stock, just something that I can strap onto the stock and rise where I rest my cheek on the stock. Any recommendations?

I already got some gun tape and some foam pads, and rigged my own cheek riser at the moment. It's kinda ugly looking, but it works just fine. I would rather get something a little nicer looking.

I was hoping you gear queers could help me out so I don't have to make a thread about stock accessories.

The gas port is big right now and that causes significant problems with suppressors. Without a suppressor it is ok. It shoots flat but I'm not sure that the trade offs are worth it.

You can see the amount of gas blowback with a suppressor mounted is pretty intense.

Recently picked up a battery powered light stick by Nite Ize. I'd stayed away from battery "chemlites" because they seemed like memes, but I got to say it's super handy. The output is bright as fuck, making it great for keeping track of people in the dark or just general non-light displine camping stuff. I've got one now on the shoulder of my pack as a great hands-free light source.

Pic doesn't show it unfortunately, but it's secured well with some 550.
>>
>>33085461
So maybe for people planning to suppress sticking with more normal gas systems would be better, or even better than that an adjustable gas block + this.
But yeah that is a ton of gas, damn.

Compare it to the MK18 which is known to be very gassy and you'll see how bad the Rifle length opened gas port is.

Normal gas system with adjustable gas block would be best, or a good piston system if you plan on shooting almost all suppressed.

Yo homeskillet, off-topic but what's your water filter of choice?

I've been using the Sawyer minis for years but am at the point where I take two of them on a trip at a time because I break them like it's my job. Not sure if they are that fragile or I'm just that retarded.

Cheap enough to buy by the box and not lose sleep, but I wouldn't mind something known to be more retard proof if you have one in mind.

I know you've mentioned iodine and the tablet/solution route, and I keep some in my packs as a backup/supplement to boiling, but filtration is so easy/fast.
>>
>>33086442
speed loaders, surefire sonic defenders, extra batteries. I'm lacking a multitool. Spiritus has not yet released gear in m81, I was lucking enough to receive the sack pouch for free through instagram live.
>>
>>33086601
We are issued a couple different MSR filters and they work great. Honestly though I mostly iodine or bleach my water. Mostly because I'm typically on the move and time at a water source is bad for certain environments that I typically train my guys in.

>MSR
Fuck. I always hate sacrificing the space for the bigger MSRs but I guess I might have to give them a shot, know camping/hunting friends who swear by them. Luckily I can stand around picking my nose all day at a water source if needed so filtering is my go to. Benefit also being my water tastes like delicious water and not liquid cancer. Appreciate it.
>>
>>33086709
>liquid cancer
oh dude I know. I much prefer filters. Honestly my knowledge on them is somewhat thin given my experience.
>>
What's the best way to run a uv5r with a spiritus rig?

Am I better off fixing it to/in a day pack?
>>
>>33086823
When you drink your liquid ass, is there still a bunch of dirt and particulate floating around if you just scoop it from a stream?

If you're up North you can just melt snow and that won't have any sort of dirt in it usually but how do you go about dealing with bits of sand and dirt once you've killed all the living things in it?
>>
>>33086852
Usually use a shemagh or extra t shirt to filter the water if it's really bad. Otherwise I hold the opening 90 degrees to the flow of the stream and that helps limit particulate matter.

Or you can scoop it, let it settle - then pour off the clean fluid at the top.
>>
>>33086879
I've watched a few of your videos on packs and the chest rig.

I noticed you made no mention of spare parts for your rifles. Do you not carry at least a spare bolt assembly when in the field?
>>
>>33086823
What I like though is that you are living proof that the retards at places like the local REI store who get out in the woods four times a year and swear that extended use of iodine/bleach will kill you are indeed retarded.

It's obviously not great for months on end, but given your job it seems like you guzzle down more than your fair share of chemically treated pond kool-aid.

>>33086852
That's by far my least favorite part of the chemical treatment method. Can't do much about particulates, larvae, etc. You can use cloth to filter from one container to another, but that obviously doesn't apply for dudes who don't have the time to use a handheld pump filter.
>>
>>33086915
I was wondering this as well. Doesn't make a lot of sense to carry another whole rifle with you but at least the smaller more critical parts.
>>
>>33086915
Depends on the op, and the length of the op
>>
>>33086919
REI guys are cool, they have a different style of things they do over there. But they def over exaggerate iodine lethality. I should be dead. I've drank some shitty fucking water (pic related, fuck that pond). If you have the option to not use iodine do it. If there's nuclear fallout use iodine. If you're in combat use iodine.
>>
>>33086915
personally i don't see the need to carry spare AR bolts. if you think it's gonna break swap it out. a new one should easily be good for 5k-7k rounds so there's no way you're going to really burn through that much in one or even several operations.

>>
>>33087326
the pants with pad pockets aren't expensive just because of pads, they have a lot more pockets in general and some more expensive materials (stretch material in the crotch and back of the waist). Something like a Crye G3 combat pant is a lot more involved to make than an ordinary BDU with knee pad pockets.

Also an Anon above brought up a great point, how do you access your weapon quickly if your hands are crammed down in this thing?
So if I'm understanding you right then you're saying have not only a glove liner and outer shell glove, but this handwarmer as well. Exactly how many pieces of gear do you need to keep your little booger hooks from freezing?

Literally the only benefit of this is if you're doing something like hunting (its intended purpose, who'd have thunk) that involves standing still for hours in the cold. But then again with all the other shit on you're making it seem like you intend to be "patrolling".

There are only a few things they sell I'd consider buying at the regular price. One being the mag insert, the other two I've found are around the same price anyways, some of their packs, and some of their pouches.

This, they have so many sales literally just wait a few months for the gear you want to be in that seasons sale.

lbt is slipping
desu eagle is just as good if not better and they're slipping too
having relatively new production gear from both I think the industry is beginning to leave them behind, LBT because of mediocre production quality and dated designs, and Eagle simply because of mismanagement from ATK.

Ive only ever purchased things while on sale, they tend to put on sale things that I want. The 6094 is top notch and their 3 day pack is really good when the sales make them dip sub $100.

Not to mention the two $300 low pro chest rigs I tactically acquired from my last unit.

LBT hasn't put out anything new that's for sure.
The 6094 is still the PC by which most non-slim PC's are judged because it's built so well. The quality of stitching hasn't really dropped either if anything I've noticed it's gotten better.

I haven't touched a lot of Eagle's stuff so I don't know on that one. LBT definitely needs to step up there game a bit. You can tell the lowvis plate carrier they put out didn't really add anything new and is just there to put the foot in the door on slim PC's.

Their slick PC predates most others by quite a bit, hence its inability to accept ITW buckles.

My LBT 3-day (2015 DOM) has significantly worse stitching than my LBT 6094S (2011 DOM).

I don't own much Eagle stuff but I have some AOR1 M4-FB1 pouches (2013 DOM) and RLCS radio pouches that have the cleanest stitching of any pouches I own

Has anyone here ever owned a Ferro Slickster? I'm thinking of buying one to replace the shit tier condor PC that came with my plates for free.

I want to know if it:
>Is the stitching durable?
>Does it adjust easily?
>Is the material is strong?
>Does it have to be worn under a layer of cloth to protect it from wear?

It looks like it works well but seems a bit susceptible to early wear to me and I can't find reviews I trust on it. I'd much rather hear it straight from you guys.
