You don't just get to go to Walmart and buy a 99.99% efficient, large area detector, for an extreme sensitivity experiments; detecting rare particle decays with a sensitivity of 1 part in 10^17.

I need to be a mechanical engineer to design the detector, its structural components, shape, where the electronics go, how it can be assembled, how it can be serviced, what design can be best upgraded later if need be. While producing my design I need to know what material I am going to build my detector out of. Great, I chose plastic, so I need to fully understand chemistry and atomic physics so I can choose the appropriate plastic and dopant so I can attain the highest light yield due to particles passing through it. Once I have a material, I need to move to readout. Knowing about electronics, I can utilize multi-pixel photon counters to collect the light. But I need to be an electrical engineer to design the electronics which supply bias voltage and read out the devices, at a specific rate- which means producing front end electronics and readout motherboards - writing the firmware from the ground up, programming the FPGAs, and writing an interface for the computers so I can talk to the motherboards via ethernet, those motherboards interfacing with the devices via HDMI. Ok great, so we have some basic components so far, but who will be making these things? Oh right, physicists. I need a custom jig so I can test my apparatus and ensure things are working correctly... better draft up some drawings, get in the machine shop to machine the parts on the lathes and mill.

I am running out of characters here, but the idea is YES physicists can fucking do just about every god damn thing because there is nobody else who can do it for them. These skills are then be applied to any other field of work like automotive, construction, programming, anything.

Physics is basically problem solving. They can literally do anything or at least figure out how to do it. ANY field will have stuff familiar to someone that studied physics seriously. Physics is highly competitive and not enough jobs so they easily get work in finance, law, programming, nearly any engineering, high tech manufacturing. Most college physics departments have access to machine tools too like mills and lathes since they need to create most of their own equipment for experiments that require one-off parts.

Not saying they'll be the best going into any situation cold. But most would be far worse than a physicist.

A nuclear physicist might excel at causing fission, but not immediately understand how to write a symphony, and vice verse for a musician.
