Title says it all, what was your most embarrassing moment at a gun range?

Some lady was staring at me shoot my Glock Compact, so being the show off I attempted to move the target to 15 feet and shoot aim at it's head. I missed 6 shots and only two landed.
>>
>>33004668
I would have attempted to move the target to my brain stem and hope one of the shots landed

Well my shit is clean. But as a rifle coach in the USMC seen some wacky shit on the firing line.

1. Seen at least 5 guys scope themselves
2. Seen a pog girl fire her weapon out of her shoulder then drop rifle and runaway crying
3. Seen a guy get hot brass down his neck, hop up and almost got shot (I grabbed him)
4. Just explaining the simplest shit to people who are trained Marksman. If you're a fucking SSgt I shouldn't have to tell you about windage
5. Catching recruits on Edson Range trying to change scores so they didn't UNQ

That's why we made them duck walk while picking up brass and m249 links.

Many years ago I plugged the tulip muzzle brake on my gen 1 MSAR STG556 trying to be tacticlol and turned that tulip brake in to string cheese.

Recent stuff would be more like:
Trying to run a modified version of Frank Proctors 525 drill thinking the worse I could score was 20, then earning a best of 14, fml.

I've scoped myself when I've been on range week before. They had issued out my rifle as a stock weapon and whoever used it moved my RCO way back and I didn't notice until I got out to the 500 so I just dealt with it because I wasn't about to change anything while I was shooting well.

Not "at a range" per se, but in the acres behind my house. Was shooting at a berm, using the driver side of the bed to shoot over the passenger side. Scope was off, and I put a few "speed holes" into my truck.

Was thinking I might add some more on the tailgate one day to make those guys with the bullet hole stickers shoot thier own shit.

Most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to me was
>at a BPCR shoot
>shooting well at 100 and 200
>go to the 300yd silhouettes
>first shot drills the section of railroad track they set targets on
>every single 300yd target falls over forward
>20+ people turn and give me the stink eye

Now I've seen some pretty cringe shit though.
>multi-time incumbent sheriff on local club range
>practicing his holster draw
>fires one through the bottom of his holster despite it being a good Safariland and a pistol with a manual safety
>bullet ricochets off the concrete not half an inch in front of his right foot and drills his super expensive looking, full range bag that was set on a table slightly to his right
>he looks around, notices like 10 people saw it, and quickly packs up and leaves
Local sheriff's department shortly got banned from that range, although for a whole string of similar but unrelated fuckups. The private club had opened it up to the local LE as a measure of "good will" and they promptly set about being jackasses and trashing the place.

Another one:
>dudebro dude and his jailbait gf on the range
>girl was obviously uncomfortable with guns
>he's got her shooting this shitty little .22lr snubbie, after like an hour she seems to get into the groove
>moves her on to a hipoint carbine in 9mm

>he pulls out a fudd durrblaster lightweight boltgun in 7mag
>literally zero instruction
>way out on bicep, face a millimeter from ocular bell of scope
>people stop to watch the soon-to-be trainwreck
>BOOM
>screams and drops the rifle (on the concrete)
>blood fucking everywhere, her face is split open from the tip of her nose to her hairline, arm already starting to turn purple
Thanks to that dickbag I guarantee she'll never touch a gun again.

i'm an rso on saturdays and i did this about 3 months after working there. everybody does it. the yelling is because you're either too far away or wearing ear pro, and also you tend to remember after you've been embarrassed. being all polite like "hey, man, gonna need you to keep behind the line" will often see behavior repeated until everybody sees you get red faced.

>what was your most embarrassing moment at a gun range?

Pin shoot at the range in PV Arizona, used a CZ 52, Cheap Czech AP/SMG ammo from J&G sales was blowing clean through the pins, and making huge sparky splashes on the range backstop.

I thought I was missing, and was doing mag dumps on each pin, in frustration.
After a couple of rounds (of pins) the owner of the range asked if I had anything else to shoot, since "that goddamn commie thing was fucking with the other shooters and fucking up the backstop".
I got my M1911A1 from the truck, and finished third of 22 shooters using absurdly expensive range ammo..

>multi-time incumbent sheriff on local club range
I have a similar story, although I heard this through the grapevine instead of in person

>Chief of local PD is re-qualifying with his pistol
>Insists on carrying a .40 Glawk of some flavor despite all of his deputies carrying 9mm or .357 SIG
>Fails his qual without a single shot on target
>Gets pissed and leaves, leaving one of his deputies to pick up his pistol and other range shit
>Deputy unloads two mags full of .357 SIG
>Mentions this to chief, he states he thought you could shoot .357 SIG in a .40, continues to blame his equipment

This guy also showed up unannounced at a domestic disturbance that took place on the street he lived on. Everything was taken care of, they had a suspect in custody and were mopping up, when he suddenly appears running out of the pitch black night, waving his pistol in the air and dressed in nothing but his boxers and a radio.

Okay so, unironically I owned a mac11. Cobray...I went to the range with my father who had never been. My father shows up with a hi point and while checking in continuously refers to it as "my nine". My gun keeps fucking itself. My dads keeps fucking itself. RO asks us to pick a rental or leave after we each have about 10 ftf. Cobray and Hipoint - matrimony of niggardry. Went back to the range with my series 70 and 75bd just to redeem myself.

This is why I will never buy another Taurus. I also own a Taurus model 94 8 shot 22LR revolver. It has mechanical problems. At a certain spot on the cylinder, it doesn't advance and you have to manually cock the hammer single action style to advance the cylinder. It's a DA/SA revolver. Never again, Taurus.

>>
>>33010689
at 12 seconds you see the muzzle plunge into the dirt as I break a cardinal tenant, a fundamental that I just didn't consider and was not made aware of back then. Basically it was a big avoidable mistake that an overly enthusiastic, under-trained kind of type like me made on camera.

isn't me he's just clarifying - and he's right.

No I didn't deliberately jam the muzzle of my gun in to wet snowy sand. Something not covered by the internet very often is the position of the muzzle in relation the the sling point type during various body positions or stances and that relationship to your actual environment - the context. .

6 years ago, when this all happened, I didn't even consider this stuff, to this day I don't have a complete or even good understanding of vulnerability scenarios with rifle slings and positions.

here's the thing: shooting on a static range gets boring after a while. you need to mix it up. it'd be like just throwing free throws all day. yeah, free throws are important, but you need to be able to move, shoot off the dribble, pass, shoot versus a defender, etc. you still need to do free throws from time to time but you need that other stuff too.

I guess someone familiar with the law and responsibilities saw the incident as your fault.

You are responsible for acting a fool. He tried to mitigate the potential for damage by being strict with you.

You let your ego and wounded pride cause you to lose control. Remember, nobody but you can control your emotions. He didn't make you act ridiculous, you chose that.

You shot someone who didn't deserve it. I hope you come to grips with this before you are done paying for it. Learn from your mistakes. There is a lesson much bigger than 'don't twirl a gun' you can learn.

That was entirely your fault you mentally defective fuckstick. You assumed that video games gave you anything approaching accurate knowledge of firearms, you broke the single most important rule of shooting (do not point guns at anything you do not intend to destroy), you treated the gun like a toy instead of a tool, you attempted a horrendously idiotic trick that would have taken two seconds of critical thinking to realize was immensely dangerous, and you gave a guy an injury he will have to deal with for the rest of his life due to your carelessness. What's almost worse is you're attempting to shift blame onto the guy YOU SHOT, claiming some bullshit excuse to cover your own inconceivable dumbassery. You are in charge of your own education in all matters.

Funny story actually. I visited the same range again about a year ago having already spent like $25k in damages. Turns out he was still working there, so I went in and mimicked a little finger twirl right in front of him.

I'm not joking when I say you had to be there. He was so pissed and I was banned by the manager almost immediately. They're real douches, but it was worth it to see the look on his face.

Any given military surplus AK should have a rear sight with the rearmost setting being a battle setting, denoted with character abbreviation appropriate to the alphabet/language being used by the country that made it. If you want to see what the opposing zero is for it you can just look across the rear sight block and see where the slider needs to be to put the rear sight at the exact same height as it is in the battle setting. For 7.62x39 I believe it's 300m. If the AK is zeroed properly then you should be able to make consistent hits anywhere between 10m and 300m with that setting. You will be hitting high at 100 but not enough to cause a miss on a center body shot.

For a 7.62x39 AK the battle setting is 350m which is the distance of an absolute shot to a target 0,5 m high( absolute shot being a shot where bullet trajectory doesn't drop below your line of aim, and doesn't exceed the height of the target). This way you don't need to adjust sights for ranges up to 350m which are typical for most engagements. You just aim roughly at the crotch level of a standing human, and you have a guaranteed torso hit.
>>
Finger off the trigger until on target and don't flash people, always know where it's pointing. If you have a failure inspect it properly. You're not in a firefight in Afghanistan, don't just tap and rack especially if you know something felt wrong. That's really all the major rules, if you worry about it too much you'll just freak yourself out.

>Get decent BSA scope, and stick on AR
>Sight picture is great, get good groupings at 50 yards
>Couldn't get it fully sighted in, but didn't put a lot of time into it
>Later get PTR, slap a cheap red dot on it just to avoid using the original irons
>Get incredible groupings, decide to move scope to it
>Install scope on a riser since the irons are in the way and not removable
>Go to sight in at range, but at 50 yards I'm not even hitting the target
>RO's watching target through spotting scope, finally figures out I'm really low
>Second RO joins in watching as I'm having to aim so far above the target I can't see it in order to hit the paper, staring at vertical stop to keep people from shooting over the berm
>Keep trying to adjust scope, end up putting a mark on the vertical stop to aim at and try and get consistent groupings
>Only rifle shooter at the range, and the pistol side is curious about the constant .308 and scope clicking rhythm
>"Maybe I'm adjusting the wrong way?"
>Even more shots and adjustment
>Bottom out vertical adjustment, then a thought hits me
>New target, aim at mark and hit paper
>Bottom out vertical adjustment the other way, fire at same mark
>Almost put the second round through the same hole
>Been there for an hour an a half trying to sight in a gun, with both RO's offering advice and going through a lot of ammo only to realize scope wasn't actually adjusting vertically
>I probably fired 200 rounds of ammo, and left burn marks on the sandbags from the heat and hit the target maybe 2 dozen times

As for the cleaning rod, the threaded nut it screws into could be full of junk preventing it from seating fully.

The most embarrassing moment I've had was not tap, rack, banging. I literally hit the top of the slide and got laughed at by numerous people. I learned though.

The second most embarrassing thing to ever happen to me was taking a friend to the range and having to constantly tell him to keep his weapon pointed down range. He just kept turning it in my direction and unloaded and loaded and checked his firearm pointing it at the stall next to us.

There were no safety officers in there and the people next to us were a guy and his daughter who had no clue....I legit got the feels and got angry after telling him 90000 times and said we weren't going to shoot together anymore if he cant follow basic safety protocols.

fyi...we were at the local PD indoor shooting range open to the public too...

Yeah, we had a guy like this. Took him shooting. He is noguns lololopothead. CZ 75 has a malfunction, oopsnofire.jpeg
Dumbfuck turns body and pistol 90 degrees saying it's not working.
Is now pointing .40 s&w directly at my best friend range bro.
Immediately grab gun by the slide shove it back down range while screaming at him like Senior drill instructor Hartman.
He doesn't get it and is like laughing.

We think he might have got high before going with us. Never took him shooting again, skipped his wedding. Pretty much shun the fuckhead.
Ffs, we gave him a lecture on safety the whole way to the range.
>>
Flagged someone with a 10/22 (unloaded and open bolt) got called out and i still feel like shit. Noticed however that there is a lot of muzzle sweeping at that range, not too worried about it strangely i just make sure i don't do it to someone else.

I took my dad a couple of times shooting, he sayd he didnt enjoy it, he got stressed and just did it to spend some time with me.
In reality the one that got me into guns was my mother and his brother (aka my uncle). So i understand why he wanted to be part of that also..

But he was also a big asshole didn't want to learn proper safety like finger of the trigger, earpro all the time on, dont flag people etc, he was always condescending to me..

until he got on my nerves
>3rd time i took him shooting
>he wants to rent a glock 17 cause he finds them cool and "to try a real pistol not like yours (hi-power)"
>He tries to find the saftey i explain to him theres none external
>"thats really unsafe no wonder why cops kill so many people"
>half way though the mag half, shots at 10 yards all over the target some entirely miss
> turns around finger on trigger points it at me sideways
>"hey the trigger is odd" while pushing the fkn safety back and forth
>the only thing that went trough my mind was "im going to get killed by this idiot in this stupid way, mom was right by divorcing him"
>push the weapon aside and yell at him
> we get into verbal fight, he takes out earpro RO staring the whole time
>pack shit up go home

>All the way back fighting verbally, got home, shit escalates, tells me im a a pussy by beeing afraid of guns and everything
>uppercut his chin, he falls punch him 3 more times in the ground spit on him leave him on the ground.

He called me 6 months after to apologize.. We get along again, a couple of months later i buy a Walther ppq tell him as i was back from the Gun shop, ask me why i dont ask him to go shooting again...
