That MRE and the inforgraphic explaining it further are complete garbage. Literally everything in that "MRE" is a terrible choice for an emergency meal. It's like it was made as joke.

Potato chips and skullfucking OP until he dies.

I actually lived off MREs, both in the field and on deployment.

everytime someone post this homemade MRE with the insta noodles, someone point out the sodium intake.
isn't it supposed to be good for you if you're on the move and not sitting around like a lard?
>>
>>32917196
If you have enough water. Modern MREs are refined to the point that you don't need any clean water to enjoy them. They are thirst provoking but technically you can eat everything as it is.

Putting some ramen in a bag with salt ass crackers and snack mystery meat is an okay idea if you're going to be around a lot of water and can purify it, otherwise you're going to be unhappy pretty quickly. They're also going to be extremely thirst provoking and you'll need to really drink a ton of water to get that shit down.

And this isn't even touching on the fact that military MREs are designed to provide balance nutrition, while ramen noodles and cheese crackers aren't exactly designed to be lived off of long term.
>>
>>32917196
Up to a certain point, having salt is good, but it can be overdone and you end up an unbalanced sweating puddle. There is no other real nutrition in it either. And it needs to be cooked to be paletteable- sure you *can* eat it raw, but it sucks and is likely to make a crumbly mess everywhere losing half the noodles to the dirt.

Same issue with the crackers.

And the chocolate candy is likely to be melted by the time it's opened.

And the instana coffee also needs to be cooked to be drinkable.

A military MRE can quickly and easily be eaten without being heated, and it doesn't contain much that will break or crumble. Even the crackers in it are tough as nails.
>>
>>32916369
Trail mix.

Specifically peanuts, cashew nuts, raisins and some M&Ms. Doesn't need any preparation, long enough shelf life, fuckton of calories, quick dose of energy from sugar, lots of protein, some fiber and vitamins and it's fucking delicious.

It's everything you could ask for, it's the perfect emergency/hiking/field/etc. food.

Regardless of how long I plan on staying out camping, I always attempt to supplement stable rations with fresh foods if at all possible. Be careful with that sodium, Eugene

When making my own rations, I usually just duplicate the items in a standard Coyote Fireline ration, as they're fairly well balanced for short duration stays and use entirely commercially available ingredients. Hell, they're basically just modern civilian versions of C-rations if you do it right. If you want menu listings, just look them up on their site and MRE Info
>>
>>32917966
Take a look at the older Canadian ration.
Most things are still commercially available and in some cases better versions now exist.

Why do people from /k/ feel they are all infantry grunts?
>>
>>32918190
Wow, thanks anon! And excellent documentation at that
>>
>>32918190
Huh. Kind of curious what the corned beef loaf would taste like.

I'd probably sub it for a can of chicken and sub the soup for chicken tortilla soup. Chef Boyardee instead of the Heinz spaghetti.

Still seems like a lot of sodium though.

>Crackers and ramen
t. some faggot that has never spent more than a night in the woods

Trail mix (non-chocolate)
Sealed flat-envelope style meats (tuna, salmon, chicken, beef)
Instant coffee/tea mixes
Gatorade/electrolytic packets
Rice
Granola/trail bars
>>
>>32918289
Although I agree that the sodium content on canned rations still runs a bit high, context is fairly important with them:

>They were never designed to be indefinite sustainment, only 21 day periods at maximum
>Canned foods still have a high water content, and are not terribly thirst provoking for the most part. Also, water does not usually have to be added to make them edible, which is a plus
>>

>>
>>32916391
I wonder how well that works.

I bought a vacuum sealer and a box of oxygen absorbers to make my own MREs. Most lunch menus get a tightly sealed pack of raisins, peanuts and 8 crackers, all of which have respectable shelf lives without oxygen. Some get a similarly airtight pack of homemade jerky and crackers.

All MREs are also packed with one sugar and one salt packet, which can be dumped in a canteen to make ghettorade. Also a folded napkin for either bumf or tinder.

Then comes the fun part - searching your local dented-can discount or wholesale grocery store for gems. The goals are: cheap, long-lasting, packs flat, can be eaten with minimal prep, and has some nutritional value. Metal packs of flavored tuna, single serving spam packs, "60 second microwave lunches" that don't actually need cooking, enriched chewy vitamin candy, there's all kinds of good shit you can find for a buck or less. If your entree alone is more than two bucks, you start straying into "might as well buy military MRE" country.

Shit goes bad pretty fast after the power goes out

Why do people always choose some sort of ramen for their MRE's? Its not really ready to eat, It has no nutritional value, pure salt so its gonna dehydrate you, and requires a decent amount of water to make you could be drinking.

The water use is my main issue with it, On a hot day walking or hiking your going to go through water like crazy, and anyone who has actually done this knows a 2 litre bottle of water is cumbersome enough...I know it looks cute but not very practical.

Most people don't use the whole packet or eat the packet. Though I generally agree ramen isn't a great idea when you can get tortillas or even hard tack for pretty cheap
>>
lets get that out onto a tray
nice
>>
>>32920185

Lol didnt really read the thread but im glad to see the backblast on OPs shitty ration.

That aside I still have seen enough home made MREs here, containing these items, or somthing like uncle bens rice, to feel justified voicing this opinion. And the people posting these are obviously the same people who camp in a powered campsite equipped with water, and dont have any idea what they are looking to make. The same people who imagine their bugout scenario to look like S.T.A.L.K.E.R middle america with lots of on the run fighting.
>>
>>32920185
its all about the calories breh
theres nothing as calorifically dense for the weight
>>
>>32920228

What difference does it make, or are you saying you could just pick at it out of the bag?

In that case yeah I share the same opinon as you
>>
>>32920290
I was referring to the salt, they include the flavoring packet which is pretty much all salt and assume you drink the broth too.

Also just remembered pilot bread exists and is more avalible.

Shame they don't make real pemmican that is just suet and powdered meat.

MSG being bad for you is a meme made by people who are racist against gooks and don't know how to handle spice or keep track of normal salt.

The first is understandable but the last points are retarded.
>>
>>32920185
You can eat ramen dry without the seasoning to get the carbs and supress the feeling of hunger
>>
>>32920379
Never eat ramen dry and drink water after, something about it feels like an expanding ball of spikes in your stomach
>>
>>32920379
That's a terrible idea.
>>
>>32920433
It works if you chew well and sip water in between bites.
>>
>>32920398
>>32920433
shit I've done it several times and have had zero problems
>>
>>32920493
I only did it eating an entire cube in like 2 minutes and then drinking a bottle of water immediately after so I might be biased
>>
>>32920345
MSG is in tomatoes, potatoes, cheese, yogurt, mushrooms... if you eat any of those things you're eating it.
>>
>>32920551
Yeah, whenever I do it I break off little bits and drink water during. It's actually kinda nice because you can control exactly how much seasoning you want on it by just sprinkling a bit on each bit

>>32916678

>There is nothing as calorie dense for the weight.

Peanut butter with candy bars and Nutella mixed into it.

People who hike the mountain range trails for months at a time make this shit because it has such high calories for weight.
>>
>>32916369
not an MRE, but I found a type of soy milk that lasts almost a year. Considering im trying to cut animal based products it's perfect as both a vegan protein supplement and as a SHTF source of nutrition/food

Vegans supplement not putting meat in their mouth by taking meat in the ass.

Dairy products etcetera.
