So now that a decent nugget is $250-300, I've been looking for another milsurp bolt-action to buy. I found a sale on 1916 Spanish Mausers - $179 for the 7mm version, and $199 for ones rechambered in .308. That's pretty dang cheap… in fact, suspiciously so. Does anyone know anything about these raifus? What kind of shape are they in? Keep in mind, I'm a shooter, not a collector, so they don't have to be pristine or have all matching parts to make me happy - they just have to be reasonably accurate and not blow up in my hands.
Also, if I get the 7mm version, how does the ammo situation look? I Googled it and it seems like there's a pretty decent supply of it at okay prices. Is there any reason that any of the stuff here wouldn't work? http://www.midwayusa.com/7x57mm-mauser-7mm-mauser/br?cid=9338
Anyhow, here are the listings:

The catch is they are beat up.
>>32852789
But the question is beat up how? Beat up as in cosmetically imperfect, beat up as in doesn't work right, or beat up as in dangerous to the operator?

first 2
3rds kinda true about the 308s since they only like a certain type of ammo
>>32852835
You take your chances. Most will be fine but some will have some bad hidden pitting. Fully disassemble and check every part before firing.

Expect to replace some springs.

These are the dregs of SAMCO's once huge inventory for a reason; they weren't stored well in Spain and probably 75% of them look like ass.

shit id rather buy another nugget than one of those if they come like that

Guns are beat up, mismatched, have low collector value. They should be fine shooters. If you get one in 7mm, you should take pics and make a thread because I'm on the fence about getting one.

I've got one, Haven't shot it yet, came in a 5 gun lot I won on RIA. mine's unconverted, good bore, seems fine, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot it if I didn't have a bunch of more interesting guns tying up my range time. I'd be a little wary of the .308 conversions since the small ring mauser action isn't really designed to handle the pressures you might encounter in some of the hotter hunting ammo that's available, but if you stick to lighter loads it should be fine.

SHEEEEIT I overpaid

have another picture

the .308 ones are bombs, avoid.
some people use downloaded .308 for them but it needs to be sub-7.62 NATO.
they weren't expected to be fired much or to last long in service and as small rings they are inherently less safe then a large ring in the event of a catastrophic failure
One thing I liked about JGsales 7x57 mauser is they will throw in 100 rounds of 7mm mauser for only 30 bucks, which is an absolute steal. I don't currently have one, but I have heard they can range anywhere from just cosmetically dinged up to absolutely awful rust/pitting and sometimes even fail to fire.

No ragrets.
