Can some one please tell me what to look for when inspecting/assessing an AK? I found a WASR at my friendly local pawn shop.

Check the trunnion and see if it's dated in the 70's or so. If so then it's made from surplus parts and is an older Wasr. Some people like the fact they have military parts in them but the older wasrs were generally more rough around the edges.

The new Wasrs which are called Wasr-10's instead of 10/63's are made from new production parts but I've heard and seen multiple accounts of them having really basic feeding issues that no AK should have. seems like there's a small chance you'll get a dud with the new Wasrs.

Aside from that, look down the top of the gun and see if all the components are lined up straight. If they are then you're good to go in that aspect.

Yes they are good rifles. Make sure the sights are not canted.
Take the dust cover off and look down the front sight to the rear sight and vice versa. Just check to make sure its straight. If its a newer Wasr then u r good to go.

Guys, I have a problem. I traded an Anderson build AR recently for an "AK-74". I checked for mag wobble, barrel pitting, no piston hangups, all that good shit. There's only one good 5.45 factory built option in the US and that's the SLR-104. Anything kit built with correct parts and a correct barrel is going to cost more than the 104.

You might be able to find something on the secondary market, but people with Russian rifles and the fixed stock Bulgarians aren't selling for any less. Not sure what the situation with SAR-2s is either.

It's a number of things, the largest of which is that the Russian military is actually broke as fuck. That's why the PAK-FA is having an initial run of exactly 12 fighters for the VVS. Beyond that, the conscription system is largely held over from the Soviet days, so there could just be a tradition thing going there. The Russian military isn't exactly the greatest about how they treat their troops either; a handful of guys wind up dead every year just getting hazed, and the fact that it's an open secret that you could end up going to fight in Ukraine and have your family told you died "in a training accident" probably doesn't do much to help with retention either.
