Pic related cost me just under tree fiddy from a pawn shop that didn't know what they were selling. It's a Steyr M95M, the Yugoslavian 7.92x57 conversion of the M95s they received after WWI. Stock's been hacked a bit but it's all original (including the commonly missing internal mag clip and commonly broken extractor) with a good bore, untouched sights, and a Garand sling (that I repaired as a short shoulder sling after it snapped because old leather) made in the 1940s.

Mine is genuine, but not 100%. It's an original that was re-arsenaled, then rebuilt with a different scope or repaired with one.

Man, I really want either an M39. I just found some for a decent price advertised as "good bore" rifles but I have the chance to get a better condition one on GB if I wait 3 days. I don't know if it's worth it to risk losing the first decent one I've seen off GB in forever when cunts are bid warring way over the value for them a lot of the time on GB.

Well it LOOKS like a Kar.98k but your smug makes me think it's something like a G.29/40 or other such lookalike.

I see a couple dots on the side of the front sight hood that might make it Israeli but they could just be reflections.

Does yours have the following marks? ('У', 'П', and a 'C' [maybe two of them like mine?]) Do you know what those markings mean? (I don't think that the 'C' necessarily means Cнaйпepcкaя [sniper], because my regular nugget also has that)

Also is the original scope serial ground off or stricken out on the side reciever?

Those are just test proof marks. Izzys do have a "C" sniper mark like Tulas from what I'm finding, but it's obscure because it's on a weird spot and easily buffed off. Look on the high wall of your receiver just above where the scope rail sits. In some rifles it's been buffed off during refurb because of pitting.

Oh yeah, I forgot. It does have the original scope number stricken off. Mine didn't get extensively buffed and still has a lot of the pitting and discoloration that was on it just like those scars on the stock.

I'm pretty sure one of those proof marks was for an overpressured load. Don't remember exactly. I think one is standard, one is overpressure, and one is accuracy.

By the way, anyone got any idea what this mark means? I haven't been able to find any info on it. It's a Cyrillic letter used exclusively in the Serbian alphabet but I don't know anything more than that. It's stamped into the bottom of my M95M's stock and I haven't been able to find any info on it. It's got several other marks on the bolt handle that I haven't been able to identify, will post pic shortly.

It's got a crowned T on the bolt handle, the Yugo nitro proof mark. I suspect that bolt mark might be from its Austrian service. The 3 mark on the bolt head here was also on the handle, not sure what it means. I'm also pretty sure that stamp on the chamber is another nitro proof mark.

Are you going to get some proper furniture for it? You could cut down a long M95 stock to fit, and use a handguard from an M24/47. Upper barrel band would be easy to find.
>>
>>32799129
Maybe for a regular M95, but for an M95M that's actually comparable. The only ones on Gunbroker/Armslist are an unmolested one that's had the bolt replaced on GB with a reserve of $350, a molested one on GB with a starting bid of $500, and a heavily bubba'd one (peep sights, removed sling swivels, rubber buttpad) in shit condition (visible rust on bolt and chamber) on Armslist for $225. Educate yourself.
>>
>>32799184
I might, the M24 suggestion is a good one considering it's an M24 barrel anyway. An M95 stock is $75 from LTC, so I might do it at some point.

>>

looks like you got lucky. Mine was hot garbage, with a badly chewed up stock, rust on most surfaces, and a mismatched bolt.

I have no idea why they thought it was okay to sell that as "good" with hand-select. I think I'll stick to more reputable dealers in the future.
>>
>>32805784
It means it was privately owned. If the P is stamped before the serial number, then the gun was manufactured for private sale, if the P is elsewhere, then it was military issue rifle that was taken home after someone did their conscription.

That was someone's service rifle that they took home, which is the default.

2016 was the first year I had the financial security to pick up a gun every now and then, here is the surp I have accumulated so far.

Really love shooting all of these, the M39 was accurate as fuck from the moment I got it really didn't have to do much to get good groups at 100 yards. The FR8 kicks like a mule but I think its really cute and handy. The SKS aint nothing special but still fun to shoot and is one of the few legal semiautos I can get here which is a plus.

The battle sight, like on the Lebel, are offset to the left a little bit to compensate for bullet drift so it's shooting a little on the right should be about right for at 50 meters since the battle sight is zeroed at 250m.

Nice. I love 'em matching! The N mark means the chamber was opened up in the 1930s so it can safely fire M1932 nouveau cartridge. It was a cartridge designed to extend the maximum range for machine guns. It had a longer bullet that sat further in the case and in doing so the brass had to open up more. The widest part of the bullet was in the case, not outside as was in the previous Balle D.

What that means to you is that if you happen to find some French surplus 8mm Lebel, that is often found on Hotchkiss clips, you can fire it. Not that that shit will actually go off... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeziKsiaKME

The barrel was made by the civilian contractor Manufacture Parisienne d'Armes et de Mécanique Générale.

Not really, that Type 38 carbine on the bottom is a put together and has been refinished.

The Type 26 is a nice gun tho shoot. It's comically under powered, a 9mm bullet and it has recoil almost like a .22, but like I said it is fun to shoot. As for anything to look out for, pretty much it's just keep an eye out for matching numbers and finish. A lot were refinished by Japan for WWII although mine isn't, and the finish isn't as nice. Same thing goes for the grips, they were replaced in the arsenal refinishing. Only thing that you generally see that gets damaged is the side door for the internal mechanism. People try to pry it open and end up damaging it not realizing that the trigger guard is hinged and acts as a lock to the door.

It's rare relative to Soviet Mosin production numbers. There were over 100,000 m/39 rifles produced, so it's the most common Finnish Mosin model encountered. They are well-made rifles.

Hey guys anyone here know much about Mausers? Found a German Mauser 98k with the markings 1943 BYF with intact Eagle markings and a couple matching parts. I don't know anything about Mausers as I had no idea I would find one around here. Whats a good resource for looking up info on them? Guy said he'd sell it for 500 and it's in pretty nice shape and has a nice stock. I just have no idea how to find out what it's worth.

Also I found an absolutely bizarre mosin and I have no idea what the fuck it is. It's got a stock like a Finnish Mosin but has all Soviet parts and markings as well as a Hex receiver and a blade front sight. It looks like someone replaced an old Dragoon's stock with a Finnish one. He said he'd take $250 for it, which is a bit high but then again it seems really weird and I have no idea what the hell it is.

Would you guys be cool with me posting a few pictures and trying to help me figure out what they are? The Mauser 98K seems pretty straightforward, I'm more confused about the Mosin. I mainly just want to research this a bit before I pulled the trigger.

"byf" is Waffenfabrik Mauser in Oberndorf. Which parts are matching? $500 is a pretty good price for any non-Russian-captured-or-otherwise-defaced Kar.98k in good condition, even if some parts don't match.

Mag plate and reciever matched from the look of it. Rest was a mishmash. The markings were damn near pristine, especially the Nazi eagle, which I thought was normally destroyed. It looks nice. If $500 is a fair price I think I'll go for it, the rifle is really solid mechanically and the stock is beautiful.

As for the mosin brace for pics. I used the mosin identifier several times and it literally has parts that match like 5 different weird mosin variants, all old or rarer types.

I think it honestly just adds more questions than answers.

Either way I'll do some reading on the Mauser and hopefully it'll be there when I get paid

Ah well, it's a noble goal at least. I really like focused collections, but pic related is the closest I've gotten. I had to wait for the CMP to get my Garand, but it's definitely worth it.

Nice, my nugget is a '43 Izhevsk too, how difficult was it to order off the CMP? Did you have to go through an FFL in your state at all?

oh yeah and turns out I apparently found another Finnish mosin somehow. This one has "SA" marked on the receiver but has all Russian parts and serial numbers.

Did the Russians use "SA" as a mark? Because I thought this was a Finnish army only thing. As far as I can tell it's a 1940 Tula and a fairly normal Mosin all things considered.

I honestly think it may have had its stock switched with
>>32811162 . Owner said they all came from an estate sale. It's possible the previous owner swapped parts around?
>>
>>32812026
I live in California, so I would have had to go through an FFL, but I have a C&R license, so I managed to avoid that whole mess. The CMP can send the rifle straight to your door in most states, but YMMV.

The actual ordering process is fairly straightforward, but there are some tricky bits. First, you have to have membership in a CMP-affiliated organization. Your local shooting club or range might have this, but the easiest way is to sign up for the Garand Collectors Association. It's $25 for a year and you get a magazine every few months with incredibly specific minutiae about Garands. They can even forward your information to the CMP for you.

You have to prove "marksmanship activity" or something similar as well. I covered this with my C&R, but a CCW will work. If you've ever competed in a shooting match, proof of that counts as well. Failing all of that, there's a checklist you can print out and get a range officer to fill out to prove you're not a complete retard with a gun. I have no clue how they know the range officer is certified or whatever, so you could probably fill that out yourself.

Because they bypass the FFL system, you have to get your order form notarized, too. A lot of UPS stores have notaries, so that may be your best bet.

Really, as long as you're decent at following directions, you'll have no problems with the CMP. I sent my order in at the end of August and got my M1 in mid-September. I would suggest you have the paperwork ready to go and keep an eye on the availability on their website so you can send it in the day they get back in stock.

Sidenote - Be aware the M1 needs a specific load of .30-06 (M2 Ball is 150gr bullet at ~2700FPS) or a new gas plug if you want to shoot heavier loads, so you may want to get some of the CMP's HXP surplus while you're at it.

this rifle is absolutely covered in marks too. I have no idea what they all mean but it seems to have gone through a lot of red tape.
>>
>>32812099
Could be a Russian rifle captured by the Finns. A lot of their stuff was like that. If I recall, they rebarreled or rechambered their own rifles to be able to shoot all the x54R ammo they picked up from the Soviets.
>>
>>32812107
If you wqere able to get it in CA, I should have no problem in Oregon.

I hope being a veteran can help me bypass the marksmanship activity, the ranges I go to is literally just the side of a mountain the state designated as a range.

I check the website every week to see if they get any M1s in, what kind of ammo do you personally buy? Or do you load your own ammo?

Looks like your cervix will see you through.

I bought a bunch of Danish (AMA) surplus when I got the rifle which works perfectly. I have gotten into reloading recently, so I got some Prvi Partizan rounds so I can actually reuse the cases. PPU makes good brass and they have a .30-06 load specifically for the M1.

If you plan on reloading, fair warning - the M1 chucks brass like a motherfucker and makes retention a pain in the ass.

>>
>>32812183
It's a fantastic rifle, no doubt. After shooting the other rifles of the era (K98k, 91/30, No 4, K31) it seems fucking space age. Easy to see why Patton (and everyone else) loved it so much.

I hope you can pick one up soon. Unless the CMP can get the Korean rifles back, they're going to be running out in a year or two.
>>
>>32812207
I hope so too

If not the CMP, what would be my best bet?

Gunbroker and Armslist seem to have some but I've always been wary about buying from people online.
>>
>>32812219
I've gotten a couple of rifles off of Gunbroker and not had a bad experience. As long as there are a bunch of good pictures, you're probably fine. I seem to recall Gunbroker having some sort of fraud guarantee if they completely fuck you over, but I didn't have that problem with my SKS or K31. Of course, then you have to deal with transfers and shit.

Obviously, the CMP is the best way to go. I've seen Service Grade M1s go for $1500 on Gunbroker. I got mine for $730 and had complete confidence in the rifle and the CMP itself.

>Mag plate and reciever matched from the look of it. Rest was a mishmash.
>The markings were damn near pristine, especially the Nazi eagle, which I thought was normally destroyed.
No, only the butthurt gypsies (Romanian Communists) scrubbed the German markings; The Russians might just remove the little swastika in the Reichsadler proof; sometimes they didn't do anything at all.
>It looks nice. If $500 is a fair price I think I'll go for it, the rifle is really solid mechanically and the stock is beautiful
The shininess of the stock makes me think it's been refinished, but the metal finish looks like a proper age patina. $500 is probably decent price. Got more pics?

>>32811162
>>32811177
>>32811194
Finnish-captured 1932 Izhevsk M91/30. The condition of the metal finish doesn't look like a Russian-refurbished 91/30, so I think it's a legit capture that needed a stock replacement when the Finns picked it up.

>>32811259
Finns almost never scrubbed Soviet or Russian markings.

>>32811994
>a regular soviet rifle repaired with a Finn stock.
That.

>>32812099
>>32812110
Another Finn-captured Soviet M91/30. Note that the Cyrillic 2-letter serial number prefix has been translated into Latin characters, and also marked on the receiver ring >>32812099 . This is a hallmark of early 90s imports from Finland, before the ATF started requiring a new unique serial number on every imported rifle. Also the condition of the metal finish; not the dull dip-blue of a Soviet refurb. This one also looks like it may have had its stock refinished Stateside.

>I honestly think it may have had its stock switched
Possible. The metal finish of both rifles looks original rather than the duller color of a Russian post-WW2 refurb, so I don't think either of them were imported from a Russian source. I don't see any refurb facility marks on either of them.

wow thank you this was massively helpful. The story behind both of those mosins is pretty awesome, but I won't be able to get both. I guess I'll just pick whichever feels more solid (I'd like to be able to use it as a shooter)

As for the 98k, I was pretty certain it had been refinished too, but wasn't too concerned about it. The rifle felt solid and clean. There's a bit of what looks like pitting on the sling up front but I was going to keep the 98k as a range only gun so wasn't too concerned. Had a really hard time getting pics, the area the guns are kept in is tiny.

and final question. Guy wanted $300 originally for each mosin, but immediately dropped it to $250 when I mentioned I wanted to collect them, same with the Mauser (he wanted 550 at first). Is that a fair price for Finn mosins (I'm pretty sure it is)

I think he'd do $700 for the Mauser and the hex Finn together if I brought cash and I feel pretty happy with that. The mosin has an incredible story and the Mauser is nice because it's the first one in the south I've ever seen that was "NAZI MARKINGS INTACT $2000".

GP11 is fairly common, relatively cheap and very high quality for the price, so a K31 would be a good choice.

OP here, my friend and I accidentally cut a tree down with ×54r and ×39. We didn't realize that it would fall just because of a few thousand rounds until we heard stress cracks and watched it fall on our camp and tent.

I got mine for $225 with over $300 worth of ammo and clips, about half is nazi marked.

It's pretty much my favorite rifle ever but you still got screwed pretty hard.

Grandpa gave me his bring back arisaka and his bringback browning high power today. The browning is a inglis, says he traded a p38 to a Canadian for it. The arisaka is sporterized and missing the cocking peice and firing pin but it's a low serial number and the bolt body matches. Told me he's gonna will his collection to me. His collection is milsurp heaven, mostly og configuration. He has 3 1903a3's a couple garands, 2 or 3 k98's, a whole crate of mosins, a p38 and a couple Lugers.

>Ross rifle
Ever since I read "A Rifleman Went to War" I've had a raging hard-on for Ross rifles. Sure does suck that I can't find one anywhere.
