I didn't see one but didn't want to start a thread purely for my own question.

I'm in the market for a lever hunting gun, but due to Ohio gun laws it HAS to be straightwall. I don't want .45-70 or any caliber that I can't get relatively easily (ie., it's common).

So that limits me to .357 and .44 mag.

I have a .357 mag revolver, and would be interested in reloading for it since I hear it is pretty cheap to just get a small $30 loading kit and do it by hand (I have spare time).

HOWEVER, I hear .44 mag is probably better for deer. At the same time, I hear .357 when loaded hot is about .30-30 in terms of killing power, and no one has ever complained about .30-30 being unable to kill deer. Since I'd like to have my gf and other friends have fun shooting a lever action, I'd prefer one without too stout recoil. I'd be looking for a 16"-18 barrel.

If anyone has shot a .44 mag lever action, how was the recoil? Can you compare it to any particular caliber? 20 Gauge? .30-30?

Has anyone hunted with either? Pic unrelated.

Haven't hunted with either, but I have shot both from a revolver and you can expect recoil to be pretty damn manageable. You can also take ammo price into consideration though. With a 357 you can shoot 38 special all day, with 44 mag youre limited to 44 special as your budget alternative (which can be difficult to find).

As for my question, how would /k/ compare 6.5 special to 6.5 grendel or any of those other similar short action rounds you can find ar uppers chamberes in? Would be used for hunting primarily pig, but sometimes white tail (in the south so pretty small). Distance would primarily from 50-200 meters. I'd like to be able to reach out to up to 500+ for shits and giggles, but its not a deal breaker.
>>
>>32789397
Whoops, meant 6.8 special not 6.5
>>
>>32787986
If it absolutely has to be straightwalled, .375 Winchester might be your best option for deer. .357mag is still a pistol round, anyone who tells you it can handle targets just like .30-30WCF is out of their mind. .30-30 has around between 2 and 3 times as much muzzle energy as .357, and while that isn't everything when it comes to downing targets, the difference between ~800lb*ft of energy and ~2,000lb*ft of energy can very damn well be the difference between a living and a dead deer. .30-30 should be on the lower end of deer cartridges.

It's a real shame .35 Remington is not an option.

I think 357 out of a 16" barrel is pretty damn impressive when you consider how relatively small and light the ammo and guns are.

I don't hunt though.
>>
>>32790182
Yes, but .357mag is still a pistol cartridge, and it's very limited because of that. There's only so much powder you can burn, thus you start running into diminishing returns on barrel length to added velocity and thus increased energy.

Being a pistol cartridge means that by the time you're at even 16 inches of barrel length, you're well into the diminishing returns. .30-30 does not have that limitation. Case capacity & pressure rating matter a lot.

What magazines should I buy for my 1911? I've got an Argentine 1911 from the late 40s and the two magazines that came with it, which I'm not sure if they're original or not, fail to feed when they get to the last 2 rounds, about 70% of the time. I don't really want a gross tacticool mag with those massive bottom plates, but if that's what it takes to get her to feed then I'll buy one at your guy's recommendation.
>>
>>32791753
That's what it'll take.
>>
>>32791617
What I meant was 16" is both the minimum barrel length for rifle and peak length for max velocity of 357 magnum.
You get 1,200 ft/lbs out of an extremely small light carbine vs. other calibers.

Realized that wasn't clear and I'd want more power to hunt humanely as well.

Camo, sleeping bags, gas masks, helmets, TMs/FMs, knives, random survival gear. It all dspends what they've got a hold of. They range from boring as hell to very impressive.

>>32792166

Depends on how soon you plan on buying more guns/how many. You might as well get something that can house 8-10 long guns with a shelf for pistols and magazines. It'll last you a long time. Also, just go with a lock/key one, electronic is a bit fancy.

So, /k/:

Bushmaster XM-15 or Carbon 15 vs. S&W M&P-15.

In terms of quality for the price.

Looking at buying an AR for plinking and blasting shit inna woods, with cheap ammo, have no tacticool interest in it.

All I'll do is add a cheap optic, maybe a foregrip (I don't like MOE personally/don't want to pile a ton of money onto the rifle), and paint a camo pattern on it like the cool kids.

The LE6920 is cool and all, but that's a lot to invest considering this is going to be a range toy and a beater.

Does anyone know or have access to inside stock dimensions for the M91/30 nugget? I want to start using my PU sniper nugget to hunt, but I don't want to ding up the stock, so I want to make a new one which is also more ergonomic and such. Don't worry, actual rifle is not going to be bubba'd at all, the original stock will be kept safe. AK files marketplace. Usually you can find some pretty good deals there

>>32791475
I'd say if you can get it for $200 and you want it, it's a good deal. I'm not familiar enough with the no4 to know if you can buy an original military stock and restore it, but it would be a nice hunting gun if thats what you're into.
bear in mind .303 is spendy, about 75 cents a shot online unless you buy Wolf (which is loaded with a 308 bullet instead of 311, causing shit groups). It wont be a tack driver, but it will be military accurate at least

Are there any left-handed bolt guns that can be had with iron sights and a mannlicher stock? I could shoot right hand but I'm about half as accurate and would really like a nice bolt gun that just feels right in my dominant hand.

You can practice on clean scrap steel to get good, and you can remove and refinish practice pieces or even keep "swatches" of metal for your own reference.

Then you can move to firearms. Many people don't practice (hobby) systematically and become sad. There are too many finish options to address IIT, but you can study then try the ones you like.

Used electric ovens are cheap or free if you want to heat and cure coating. My gunsmithbro uses a large toaster oven facing up into an insulated scrap steel wall locker to cure powdercoat on long guns. Works great.

Why do people say DA/SA requires less training than SAO for a carry pistol? Seems like the time spent training for a nasty DA trigger pull and the following SA pull could be spent learning to flick off a safety as you draw.

If it has a fixed choke you might not want to shoot steel shot through it, or slugs if it's an old gun. In general though rifled slugs are fine to go through most chokes and modern guns are made to take steel shot, so you should be fine.

Check the side of the barrel for any markings. It will likely say something like "Full," "Mod" "IC" or some such.

Also check the muzzle to see if there's a section that is threaded on, or threads for something to go into.
>>
>>32801504
I'm not a transvestite (crossdresser), I'm a transsexual, there's a big difference.

The context was to emphasize how extremely weak and vulnerable I am (hormone therapy reduces bone density and muscle mass severely, they're anti-steroids), and combined with my bone disease how limited my options are for firearms. I felt it was relevant for my question, in the questions that don't deserve their own thread thread.
>>
>>32801522
Get a full sized 9mm. If you want a cheap one that will never fail, get an Sd9ve. It's a Glock clone. The larger gun will help with recoil and will be easier to shoot than a smaller pistol.
>>
>>32801537
Would that be easier to shoot than the Hi Point 9mm carbine suggested by >>32797672

also side note
>been watching videos of people shoot all sorts of guns since yesterday

>>
Do people really shoot .22lr that much, or do they just like buying thousands of rounds because it's cheap and they can?
Personally, I very rarely ever shoot .22
>>
>>32801551
That's also a good choice but it's a lot heavier and worse off for home defense than a pistol would be. I imagine with your bone disease you want something light enough to hold for longer periods of time.

That said you should read up on the spec ops guide to home defense. Safest way to deal with a break in is to close your door and sit in a blind spot and wait for them to walk in your room. This gives you control of the situation and is the safest way. If you do that the Carbine would most likely be better.
>>
>>32801572
Thanks for the suggestion anon, I'll probably check out that book pronto

I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt4Le2SR0dQ is selling me on it, it makes me want to shoot it for fun. It malfunctions in the video though, is that something that I should worry about happening?
>>
>>32801631
Malfunctions will happen to everyone with just about any gun, and part of learning to defend yourself is learning to deal with that. I don't know about that gun in particular but malfunctions can be cause by several factors like ammo or cleaning.
Unless you're buying gangbanger garbage it's not something you should "worry" about. Keep in mind and practice for worst case scenarios, sure, but you wouldn't want to actively worry about those sorts of things in general because that's just a ton of stress.
>>
>>32801631
Malfunctions will happen with cheaper guns, especially carbines. Make sure to clean and oil it properly and get good magazines for it and it should work just fine

>>
>>32801805
It's updated all the time. Like the one anon said, the Sd9 or Sd40ve is probably your best bet for a cheap reliable full sized pistol.
>>
>>32801816
Keep in mind the Hi point has a very snappy recoil despite it being 9mm.
>>
>>32801834
Snappy recoil as in it'll jerk my arm up or something? Because I'm pretty sure I can't physically handle something like that well
>>
>>32801816
I'd recommend going a little higher than that. An extra hundred bucks for an SD9VE grants you a much higher capacity in 9mm in a much more streamlined package.

There's nothing fatally "wrong" with a hi-point, but there's really nothing to recommend it by either. It was designed to be cheap and nothing else, leaving little to enjoy about it.
>>
>>32801826
Different anon. I'm more interested in rifles or shotguns. Though, a .45 carbine or smg would be fucking awesome. Of they make them at a cheap price.

Just had a dream in which I was on my own property and (long story short)
I ended up pulling a handgun on a neighbor who was on my property , harassing me and preventing me from "hunting" ( ends up being a class c misdemeanor in my state)
Basically told the person to get off my property and not come back , gun drawn Finger off trigger

Can I technically do this without getting in deep shit? As it was on my property and they were trespassing ?
State does have some castle doctrine laws in effectp

It will be the same amount of recoil as most other 9mms but it is more unpredictable. You don't want that for a home defense gun.

What Kind of budget are you looking at?
Canik TP9 is a really solid gun and a steal at $300-350 or so if you don't mind buying from Turkey. Caniks in general are pretty damn good for the price.
There's also the CZ P10 coming out just around the corner that every youtuber and their mom has been jacking off to.

>>32801816
Good luck anon. I think >>32801834 is referring to the pistol and not the carbine. Carbines will be a lot easier on you thanks to the weight, and iirc that Hi Point carbine is heavy enough that it should absorb most of that recoil without being that bad to carry even with your boneitis.

Snappy means that it jerks up in your hand. I've never fired a hi-point, but the fact that they have such a heavy slide supposedly makes them recoil a bit... strangely, which some people find uncomfortable.

If that $500 doesn't include transfer fees and the like, some online place is selling a PPQ for a little over $500 and those things are fantastic.
The CZ P10 is up for preorder at $500 as well, and if you're willing to deal with a lack of aftermarket for a little while it's supposedly great.
If you're ok with buying used there are tons of options out there that I couldn't point to any one in particular. Are you just sticking with handguns, and what are you looking for in the gun?

Specifically, Beretta 92 and Sig P226 mags
(Pic related)
They look almost exactly identical, except for the cut out of the magazine catch.

Either mag fits in both guns with the exception of the interference of the pistols magazine catch inside the mag well.

My thought is that if the mag release slots for each pistol were cut into each mag, they would be interchangeable

Anyone ever notice this?

Legal question:

If I have a C&R in Oregon and my uncle in California wants to gift me several antique C&R qualifying guns he can just ship them to me right? Don't have to do anything else as long as he knows I would pass a background check? Don't want him to go to jail in Cali.
>>
>>32809156
No handguns or other firearms under 30 inches overall length can leave his possession without going through a California FFL, so as to update their registry.
No registered assault weapons can leave his possession without first being made AWB compliant and deregistered.
No destructive devices (California definition, not NFA definition) may leave his possession without going through a California FFL. This includes Yugo SKSs with the integrated grenade launcher among other ludicrous things that are most certainly not destructive devices. Be sure to look up each individual item.
Any transfer by an FFL in California, even if it would be exempt if made between private parties, requires a DROS (Dealer Record of Sale), DROS fee ($20+), background check and 10 day wait.

Firearms rights were very restrictive under the Nazis as they were under the Wehrmacht Republic. Nazis took it a step further and took guns from everyone except vetted Nazis. Anyone who could be politically inconvenient or disagreeable was stripped of arms, doubly so in regards to Jews or other so called 'non-humans', some concessions were made in the name of hunting or farming but they were of little consequence, few in number and heavily licensed UNTIL the Nazis had soundly lost the war and were on the retreat, at which point whatever was lest of the german state was urged to take up arms as destroy itself, mostly because hitler was a closet jew-faggot.

Maybe. IDK how many (if any) M76 rifles are still in service with the Serbians, so that will determine how much M75 they manufacture. Still lots of 8x57 surplus floating around tho; you just have to keep a sharp lookout on the secondary market.

I've shot a few hundred rounds of Turkish 8x57mm ranging in dates from 1937 to 1950. As long as the ammo looks in good condition, the projectile is not loose in the case, and you can still hear the loose powder inside the case it has no problems at all.
>as long as it kinda resembles WW2 ammo
Turk 8x57mmm ball resembles German WW1 ammo more than WW2 ammo; it's a virtual clone of the 1905 S-Patrone firing a 154gr flat-base bullet at about 2950fps from a 740mm barrel.

I'm considering an inexpensive air rifle for cheap backyard offhand practice. I don't know whether /k/ considers air rifles to be weapons, but I want to get it to get in more practice at shooting offhand and from positions, and a relatively quiet air rifle should (I hope) allow me to practice in the back yard without the neighbors flipping their shit and calling the cops, which they would do if I used a firearm.

I have been considering a Benjamin 397 .177 air gun. I would be using it to practice shooting offhand standing and kneeling with irons at 25m or so. I've heard that their QC is very spotty and they can come out of the box needing to have paint scrubbed out of the bore, and/or with a muzzle crown needing to be recut. They're supposedly American made (from mostly Chinese parts, though) and I am seeing fairly good ($170 or so) deals on them locally. I am told that it's very difficult to install optics on them, but that's okay--it's my iron sight shooting that I want to work on, and they come with a set of serviceable, if not great, irons installed.

I would need to set it up with a sling, of course.

And I have already been told that if I am considering it for anything more serious than plinking at tin cans I should probably get German match grade pellets rather than the cheap Crosman pellets that are all I see for sale over the counter locally.

Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations for this kind of thing? Thanks.

You're probably trolling, but what the hell. I'm in a good mood tonight and I'll answer the question in good faith.

From most recoil to lowest, suitable defensive long guns for someone with poor upper body strength:

5.56mm semiauto carbine, such as an AR15 type or a Ruger Mini-14. You can find used ones and off brand "clones" for as little as $500 or so, or you can go up past $2000 for something like a SCAR16 or a Tavor bullpup with an Aimpoint red dot. 5.56mm recoil is modest and I consider it the upper limit for someone with below average upper body strength and grip strength.

Then there are semiauto pistol caliber carbines, like those based around Glock magazines from Palmetto State Armory or Olympic Arms. (yes, there are less expensive semiauto pistol caliber carbines from a company called Hi-Point, but the ones I have examined have not impressed me as either well-constructed or well-designed, and Hi-Point also makes a line of semiauto handguns that are infamously shitty, so I am hesitant to recommend any of their products). Go with 9mm, as it has the least recoil and still decent performance, and good duty/defensive ammo from the ARFCOM Short List:

http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index.htm#mozTocId759557

Or if that's still too much, a reliable semiauto .22 rifle, one that uses detachable box magazines, preferably high capacity. Maybe a Ruger 10/22, with factory 25 round mags (but test the gun with those mags and different kinds of ammuntion because I can tell you those mags are finicky and don't necessarily work well with every kind of .22 ammo out there).

Maybe an inexpensive red-dot scope, like the Primary Arms. The Army and Marine Corps both agree that it's faster and easier to teach a novice to shoot effectively with a red dot optic, and skilled marksmen have better precision at long range with them. This goes for any firearm you choose.
>>
>>32818617
Kind of a poorfag here. I really would like a bolt action rifle in .308. I was considering a Ruger American, but a few friends have recommended I save a bit more and go for a Tikka T3. This would be my first longer range firearm. What should I do?

As for tactics, I don't recommend going hunting in your apartment at night if you hear glass breaking. Take cover behind furniture and stay in your bedroom, and wait for someone to try to break down the door. Then when he is silhouetted in the doorway--and you are sure that this is a bad person who wants to harm you, and you're not about to light up some poor cop or paramedic who got a call in error that someone in the apartment needed help--when you are sure that the person is there to attack you and your life is in danger, light that motherfucker up. Infantrymen call it the "kill box" or "the fatal funnel." While Mr. Dahmer is standing there like a dork waving his butcher knife and his jar of Plochman's mustard and yelling threats--well, if he's there to kill you, make the motherfucker work for it. Light his ass up while he's silhouetted in the doorway. If he's going to come for you, make him come through a wall of hot lead. If he kills you with your own gun, make sure it's empty so he has to beat you to death with it.

You probably know a .22 rimfire, the bottom end of what I recommended, isn't especially powerful. A dozen of them dumped fast into the bad guy's upper torso, as fast as you can focus on that dot and line it up with his center mass and press the trigger (which will be pretty fast, if you're practicing regularly), will ruin just about anybody's day. This also goes for 9mm hollowpoints or 5.56mm bullets, the latter of which may have the advantage of punching through any soft body armor he may be wearing ("bulletproof vests" are really more "bullet resistant," and they work a lot better on .22s and on handgun bullets than on high velocity rifle bullets like the 5.56, as a general rule). Keep shooting him until he stops trying to hurt you. If center mass doesn't work try shooting him in the face instead. Then call 911, and remember these words: "He was trying to kill me. I was afraid for my life."
