About how many rounds would you guys carry during shtf/innawoods?

Wouldn't be carrying .308
Heavy rifle and heavy ammo is not suited for shtf.
An intermediate caliber can take small - medium game and human. I would only go .308 if I was in bear and moose country, which I'm not.

But that's where your wrong.

.223 is more appropriate for an infantryman, who has belt fed toys nearby, grenades on hand, can call in artillery.

You can't.

.308 is about being barrier blind
.308 is about being effective past fragmentation velocity

Sure it's heavier, but pushups are free.

I don't buy steel case ammo. I like hitting what I'm shooting at, and financially supporting slavs sounds like a terrible idea.

Others have used steel case in my rifles with good results. I have found the extreme spread of the MV to be unacceptable. The bullet design to be inferior. And the powder to be inordinately filthy.

If other people have good results using steel cased through your own guns, clearly shooter error is the issue.

Maybe the idea of using steel cased makes you expect to shoot poorly. When we expect things, we tend to help them happen.

I've never purchased a single round of steel cased.
I have read the numbers others are getting though. MV ∆ of over 100fps is not uncommon. This is unacceptable.

Additionally the bullet design is poor. Low BC, generally inferior terminal ballistics. The only redeeming quality is the cost, and I handload, so this is not a value to me. Handloading takes minimal time, and yeilds phenomenal results.

Also, do the collapsible stocks suck? I've heard mixed reviews, and it's not like I can handle one often up here.
>>
>>32768932

I own several older aimpoints. While some of the oldest models use kinda dated batteries (which you can still get online), image quality is still better than entry-level optics you can get today.

An original or Gen2 will usually run you $50 or less. Can usually get the 3x for $20-40 and the variable 1.5-4x scope for under $50. The Mark III will be a little higher and is a better rig and can double as a carry handle.

Then you get into some of the models even newer than that (like the 5000) that (imo) compete toe for toe with current aimpoints.

Really best bang for your buck.
>>
>>32768974
The one I posted on the rifle was a Mk.III, right? Can those older Aimpoint red dots handle .308?
>>
>>32763117
>S-senpai, I-I'm gonna c*aaaahhhhhhhhhhh*
>>
>>32769053

Yes, that's a Mark III. The older magnifiers will screw right in just as they will on the Electric and the G2.

And yes, it will handle it. Keep in mind that in the 1980's, these sights were ~$200+ IIRC. I had one mounted to my FAL when I owned it, never an issue.

Here's a limited edition Aimpoint Ruger.

http://www.icollector.com/Ruger-Aimpoint-Hunters-Redhawk-Limited-Edition-Double-Action-Revolver-with-Red-Dot-Sight-Holster-B_i9385824

You're talking about a sight, adjusted for inflation, that ran $500+ in it's heyday. It can handle it. Currently have one of my Mark III's mounted to my CX4 in .40. Works like a charm. Have a G2 on an AR without issue, and have an original Electronic mounted to an Italian Carcano because fuck you, that's why.
>>
>>32768948
I wish there were more options for the retractable stock. I know the older flat variants are out there (ala G3A2/G3A1) but I wish we had options like the MP5. The MP5 has a ton of retractable options from HK.

I have a convave variant. The flat back older stock looks crude and dated
>>
>>32768948
The rope handle is a neat idea. My mount and scope kind of get in my way sometimes when charging so it would be nice to have something like that.
>>
>>32768948
Recoil feels about 20% or less heavier - alot of this has to due to the worn out rock hard rubber buttpad which is guaranteed on every stock out there. This can also be fixed with a buffer installed by Bill Springfield and a few others. Also it's pretty easy to machine new positions for the stock.
The collapsible feels absolutely perfect with body armor, esp when you have extra positions.
If you find yourself shooting in winter conditions alot you won't even need the buffer, just switch out for a new buttpad and enjoy a felt recoil reduction. The stock is worth it if you actually carry the rifle around alot. I bring mine along camping now and then, in a shotgun style MOLLE holster attacked to my pack, usually covered up with the stock collapsed.

People forget just how damned compact the gun is with the stock retracted. G3's only have 18" barrels so collapsed they are quite manageable.

I wish there were more options for the retractable stock. I know the older flat variants are out there (ala G3A2/G3A1) but I wish we had options like the MP5. The MP5 has a ton of retractable options from HK.

I have a concave variant. The flat back older stock looks crude (welds) and dated in comparison and I think it only really looks decent on wood forearm'd G3's

The Portuguese used to tie their sling off to the charging handle to assist in breaking the rollers open/charging the weapon.
Doing this or tying a thingamajig to the charging handle is prefferable to installing a HK21 charging handle IMO. HK21 handles can afterall break

I guess I should have asked it differently. Is there any way to tell a Chilean Imbel from any other Imbel? What is their history, particularly wrt Pinochet? I heard they were "carried a lot, shot a little," but it sounds like identifying them is a mess, since Imbel exported FALs to other SA and African countries. How can I tell what is what?

>>32759922
Excellent points.
>>
>>32769270
They are designed for Belt+suspender setups - a la ALICE.
They'll fit a combat belt. I prefer the early Flecktarn pattern ones that interface directly with ALICE grommets

Something like this but a bit earlier perhaps is what they were designed for specifically, but they'll fit most NATO belts

http://www.keepshooting.com/german-military-combat-harness.html
>>
>>32769287
The Imbel FAL was a secondary issue weapon, the Chileans had the SiG 510 in .308 as a primary arm during the period. As I understand some more elite units were smitten with the Para FAL.
I don't know of a way to identify chilean parts. FAL Files has the answer you seek
>>
>>32768750
Forget the HK91, just get a PTR at this point.
Some HK91's are probably going to need new rollers, a new extractor, and possibly more serious parts like the cocking tube, charging handle and it's detent, etc.

The value from PTR is just too good at this point to avoid.

>>
>>32761009
You mean carry handle
The (optional) folding carry handle on the G3 and FAL's are independent of the stock entirely.
Wooden G3 handguards/stocks are rarer than FAL/L1A1/Izzy wood and unlike the FAL, noone is making new reproductions yet
>>
>>32769394
These are the two types of (Standard) Retractable G3 stocks. Top is mid 70's G3A4 and beyond, bottom is G3A1/2

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk170/fredieusa/Second/HKG3/01%20Kit/G3StockA3.jpg

The extended charging handles are HK21 handles, they can break however just like normal handles. A pull tab or sling attached to the handle is just as good of an alternative
>>
>>32769394
There are also several commercial stock options - from Choate style folders, to M4 buffer tubes.

Too bad SAGE international is a faggot and this doesn't actually exist

The plastic overmold can break on regular and HK21 charging handles - you still have the metal bit underneath to work with, which is usually the full length of the handle anyway. It can just be a bit jagged.
HK21 handles are fine and they usually don't break, but the sling or pull tab method will work better for most. If you run a 2 point there is no reason why you shouldn't run it through the (bottom) of the charging handle - plus you keep the sling off the barrel so it won't throw off aim when you tighten up. All you gotta do is yank that sling out and then back - or if loose step on the sling and charge it that way.>>32758871

As for mags - Alum mags are lighter, don't corrode easily, and are over 1/2 cheaper.
Steelies are stronger and won't bend as easily.
Alum is fine

If you want to be special snowflake get some Turkish MKE Polymer mags with the clip and the anti aircraft reference. They are rare but MKE will be bringing in more.
Don't have a pic but they are similar to these HK33 mags:

What do SCARs offer over comparably priced AR10s?
>>
>>32771376
Lighter weight. Smaller breakdown. Easier to change furniture (think handguards). Lower recoil.

With deadshot barrels releasing their aftermarket barrels, the SCAR is no longer a one size fits all solution.
>>
>>32771376
It says "FN" on the side. Then again with any comparably priced AR you're overpaying for something that says "HK" or "LaRue" or somesuch on the side.
>>
Alright /k/ I want suggestions on a lightweight pack/survival rifle (preferably like an ar-15 format)
>>
>>32771890
S&W M&P10 with a Swarovski Z6i
>>
>>32771890
Gonna need more specifics if you want a real answer.

What's lightweight
What's a "survival" rifle mean to you
What are you shooting
How far out
What's your total budget
>>
>>32771592
>Lighter Weight
Yeah. Usually.
>Smaller Breakdown
Not really.
>Easier to change furniture
If you can't replace a handguard, breaking down isn't going to matter for you. And the SCAR has a fairly limited spread of handguards.
>Lower Recoil
That's just not accurate. The SCAR has low recoil for its weight, but the only reason it would beat an AR10 out of the box would be because of the obnoxious pws muzzle break.
>Accuracy
SCAR accuracy eats it over longer periods of fire because of the absurdly thin barrel. You can put in a new barrel that's thicker, but you'll be increasing frontal weight on an already nose-leaning system.

AR10s usually make better DMRs. SCARs usually make better general service battle rifles. Both can be made to work in either position.

SCAR breaks down into three pieces, not two. Its easier to get it into smaller cases. This is what I am referring too

In changing handguards, I am not meaning breakdown. I mean that with a bit driver you can swap out handguards. There are multuple picatinny, mlok, and keymod handguards out there in assorted lengths. If your special and unique desire isnt meant by them, perhaps you need reevaluate if you really need that.

It has lower recoil not merely because of it muzzle break, but because of its operating system. To over simplify, the mass of the BCG sops up a huge amount of recoiling inertia. I have a SCAR and a .308 AR with the same brake, the .308 AR weighs more, SCAR recoils less.

I never went into accuracy, but yes, the SCAR starts off at essentially a 1moa rifle, and the barrel will heat up, and cool down much more rapidly, yes.

Both can be made into excellent <insert role here>. The Mk20 outclasses many 308ARs in the DMR role. Both are good rifles. Which one to go with is a matter of whats important to you.

It was requested that HK sling loops be put on for the contract.
Replace them or add qd cups.

My plan doesn't involve long rucks. I'mma simply bug out to my favorite camp site, which involves only a few hundred meters of actual rucking. It just happens to be extremely hidden. So ammo weight is less of a concern, and .308 will be nice to have if any of the moose or bears in the area swing by.

Are the SCAR and AR10 my only real options for MOA or better?
>>
>>32773798
Without pouring money into a PTR.
Without pouring money and luck into an FAL
Without getting an FNAR or that new browning totalllynotanFNAR.

Yes
>>
>>32772174
Breaking down to 3 instead of 2 is a very silly benefit. The barreled receiver is still just as long--if not longer--than comparable ARs.

Again, handguard swapping isn't a real benefit for a scar. Especially when the standard scar handguard is kinda shit. Short and bulky as fuck.

The SCAR will not recoil less than a properly buffered AR. The angle of the bolt and the stock is more prone to rise. And the weight of the bolt means the impulse of recoil is blunter. A top grade AR10 like an LMT or JP will have a good buffer and gas tuning. My LMT recoils as much with an A2 as my SCAR did with the PWS.

You can make a good DMR out of a SCAR, but it'll cost you a fortune and you'll much of the weight benefits of the SCAR platform. It'll also balance poorly.
>>
>>32773816
How much money into the PTR?
FAL is just a poor choice for a DMR by design and the FNAR is a Chinese puzzle box to field strip. I assume the Browning ripoff is the same.
>>
>>32773853
The bulk of the handguards isnt a problem for those without small hands.

My LMT recoils harders than my 17. Both have the same brake.

Changing out handguards may not be a thing for everyone. I found it useful.
>>
>>32773816
Getting a FAL to MOA or better doesn't require luck, it requires the grace of God.
Also you missed
>Without pouring money into an M1A and periodically pouring more money into it to keep it that way
>>
>>32773868
FN owns Browning. Its not really a ripoff, but yes.

To make sure its going to get moa or under, probably about as much as a 308AR with a BA barrel, which is guaranteed for moa or better.

>>32773876
Im assuming anon doesnt have stock in marinetex.
>>
>>32773870
The SCAR factory handguards are fat as fuck.

Get a better buffer for your LMT. The consensus online is the SCAR will have worse recoil all things equal.
>>
>>32773898
Ive got giant hands. The size is appealing.
>>
>>32773883
Hmm. Well I guess it's worth considering then. Thank you for your help.
>>
>>32773919
If you want to be sure, and want it relatively inexpensive go for a .308 AR. Aero M5 sets go for $300 ish, a BA barrel for $220-300. Sprinkle in a parts kit, a good trigger, and handguard. You should be able to get there for $1000 total. Or about the cost of a PTR.

If your not keen on doing the work yourself, almost any local smith and a few online retailers will install as many or as few parts as you want.

The M14 is easily the worst of the legacy battle rifles.
It was only adopted vice the FAL because of NIH and it was dropped faster than any other US service rifle because it was obsolete before the first one rolled off the production line.
The modified Garand action is extremely vulnerable to dirt and mud, and the ergonomics are worse than an AK's, since at least the AK doesn't have its safety inside the trigger guard where it can easily cause an ND.
It's possible to accurize it, but only at great and continuous expense since shooting it regularly or even just rough handling will cause it to deaccurize itself.
A standard M1A is hundreds of dollars more expensive than a FAL or G3 of similar quality because it's a modified 1930s design rather than a 1950s design and requires a corresponding level of laborious and costly hand-fitting of its parts.
>>
>>32779142
When you say it will deaccurize itself, about how much is that/how accurate will it be out to on regular maintenance? Also, about how much is an HK G3? I just did a quick search and could only come up with C308's and PTR's which, from what I understand, are a bit cheap. I could consider an FAL, but it looks like I'd have to go for an L1A1 or Sa58; any recommendation between those two?
>>
>>32779260
C308s are shit but PTRs are pretty damn good. Especially for the price. I'd get one over an M1a any day. The only L1A1s you're going to find are most likely Century pieces of shit. DSA makes some decent FALs and you can find some good kit builds too.
>>
>>32779260
That part only matters if you're into National Match bullshit or if you're trying to turn the M1A into a DMR, which you aren't.
The PTR-91 GI and DSA Voyager (G3 and FAL, respectively) both retail for <$1000 and are mechanically fine.
The PTR is only "cheap" in comparison to a no-bullshit HK91, which would run you into SCAR 17S money.
The Voyager has a cast receiver, which is heavier and weaker than the forged receiver of the SA58 and most original FALs, but the weight difference is only a couple of ounces and you'll never shoot enough .308 to worry about cracking it.
>>
>>32779374
Alright thanks, I'll look more into DSA than. As a final point, I heard that the FAL is better suited as a close to intermediate range rifle which is capable but not ideal for longer distances while the M1A is better suited as a DMR; would you agree or disagree with that? I ask because I already have an AK which I'm very comfy with to about 60 or so meters.
>>
>>32779408
The US military uses the M14 as a DMR because they're 7.62x51 and they don't have anything better to do with them.
A private individual buying their own weapons has no reason to pursue such a thing.

Among other things, they explicitly wanted certain features, such as a folding stock and reciprocating charging handle, that you can't realistically get on an AR.
Also, remember that the SOF Combat Assault Rifle program originally featured light and heavy variants, so it's not like it was just about getting a multi-mission capable heavy carbine. The original goal was to produce a rifle system of, by, and for SOF units without the considerations and compromises that go into the design of a general-issue weapon.

Sorry to bother y'all but I got some questions.

Question one, what's the tier levels for G3 type raifus?

In order of best to "a shit" it's:
HK91
PTR91
CETME

Right?

Second question, are all CETME's in the US Century Arms sporters or are there real Spanish ones?

Third question
Is there really any justification for buying an HK91 over a PTR91 if you live in a state unaffected by pre and post ban?

Fourth
Is the SR9 easily convertable to look like a G3 or is it assblastedly difficult like people say the USC and SR8's are?

Last question, would you reccomend to someone who wanted to get a G3 looking rifle to buy or build one if they've got experience building AR's?

>>32796448
That's how my Golani sporter made me feel. Despite being objectively a decent rifle, the fact that it was Century Arms made me decide to sell later. Also the lack of a bipod was pretty gay.

Holding out for a good old one in 5.56 or I might build one but I have no AK building experience.

Most of them ask if it's a PTR before about the furniture. I am in SC so PTR is a bit more well known here than in some places I bet. The furniture does throw some people for a loop though.

GUYS

I have a question. Do FAL come with a loli, or are those acquired separately? Can you get a loli with PTR?
>>
>>32799195
>Do FAL come with a loli, or are those acquired separately?
Separate.
>Can you get a loli with PTR?
No, but you can with an HK91.
>>
What are the hot AR10 brands at each price point and at what point am I just throwing money around for little to no real improvements?
All I know is DPMS stands for Don't Purchase Me, Stupid.
>>
>>32799195
FALs come with a South African man in short shorts. G3 clones come with a loli. M14s come with a middle age adult with downs syndrome.
>>
>>32799403
DPMS AR308s are supposedly pretty decent
then you move up to the S&W M&P10
then the FN SCAR 17S
then the KAC SR25 ACC (if you want a battle raifu) or APC (if yuor a faget who wants a """semi-auto sniper rifle""")
You start hitting diminishing returns after the M&P, which is reliable, lightweight, and capable of getting good hits out to 700+ yards despite having a reasonably light, non-freefloated barrel.
>>
>>32796626
IDK why, but your pics always push me to a PTR as my first battle rifle. It just looks nice, but it will probably be a few years to save up after college. If I wasn't poor and in college, I would buy one.
>>
>>32756179

1. Pretty much

2. Most of the CETME rifles in the US are Century made. But way back in the day, actual CETME rifles made in Spain were imported by Mars. They're collectors' items now.

3. Only if you have the money

4. dunno lol

I had an ar10 and didn't like it because the rifle and ammo were heavy. In a shtf situation I think both would be just fine, but I would prefer my ar15. And if I had to pick I would just take an AK over a 10 because everyone and there mom has one so parts could be replaced, ar10 In my AO is a niche rifle and parts would be difficult to find. In my opinion In a shtf scenario, I want a rifle that everyone has parts for, ammo for, and accessories. Good luck finding a magazine or even a mag pouch that's made for a ar10 post shtf. Burgers are more or less forced into the ar15 platform because of its widespread support.

Their 308 rifles are better made than the .223 rifles, this still doesnt mean much.
This last year has seen a LOT of new players in the .308 AR market. If your not looking to build to suit, and you want a prebuilt, your best option right now is to scour slickguns look at what is in your price range, and research that model/company.

>>32802000
Pushups are free.
You can purchase replacement parts today.
You can purchase a magazine pouch today, get TACOs and itll work for everything.
And in case you missed it, push ups are free

Even in 2015 you could essentially sum up the whole 308AR market in a few sentances. Today thats a little harder.

Am I the only guy who doesn't care for G3 style sights? I really wish they had a blade front sight and a rear leaf sight like on a K98. Also, what's the best budget scope? Pls no bully.
>>
>>32806890
G3s have a lot of love it or hate it features.
>>
>>32806940
Is there a good alternative to the G3 rear sight?
>>

>>
>>32806967
It's the peep-sight/barrel thing. I have a Finn Mosin that has a blade front sight and I can ring gongs all day long with it, but I struggle with the G3 sight. Maybe I just don't understand the concept, but I also have never liked the "globe" around the front sight. I want to like the G3 sights, but they just don't work well for me.

Depends on your budget
$2000 - march 1-8
$1500 - trijicon 1-8
$1000 - SWFA 1-6
$500 - PA 1-8

Assuming you want close to mid range

Center the tip of the blade in the middle of the circle. You can use the circular sight guard around the front sight to help do that. I don't really know more of a simple explaination than that.
