The thing is, when I start big projects like that, I have a tendency to not finish them.

Plus if I buy a pre-built rifle and just buy a new handguard and stock, I still have the OEM one in case I don't like the Magpul parts for any reason.

I could buy the parts at different times so it wouldn't be such a shock to my poorfag wallet all at once, and I could say it's something I built with my own hands, AND I would have intimate knowledge of how every little piece works in conjunction.

So, how do I start? Just buy a stripped lower and then start buying other components?
What is the difficulty level?
Will I need special tools that cost a lot of money?
After paying for shipping on all the parts, will I even save any money?

Guess it's off to youtube to do some research.
Anybody know of any channels that have good videos or series about building ARs?

Start with the stripped lower, that's the only part you need an FFL for.

It can be put together with nothing but needle nose pliers and channel locks, with a little bit of tape on the tools to prevent marring.

The upper is a bit more involved as far as specific tools. You could buy a complete upper and do the lower yourself.

Armorer's wrench (vital for castle nut)
maybe a vice block (2nd pair of hands works)
blue loctite

Building will save you money if you buy most of your parts in chunks from the same site

I'm building a retro M16A1 clone on a proper Nodak receiver, and I was wondering if there was any way to recreate the original Colt markings on the receiver? I'm more of an AK guy and with some of my AK clone builds I've etched the correct receiver and/or selector markings onto the receiver I've built the rifle on, and I'm just curious if there was anything similar to that with retro AR markings. It should be easy enough for me to recreate the correct don't and text size for the PROPERTY OF US GOVERNMENT, rifle designation, caliber, and maybe serial number should I decide to get that all worked out with the ATF (probably not as I'm building it to keep it), but I won't be able to recreate the Colt logo and I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about getting that on the gun. If I really, really need to I guess I could settle for a quality decal although I'd prefer to either etch it, maybe engrave it, or just leave that part blank than use a decal.

Chad from Iraqverteran8888 has a pretty in-depth video on how to build a basic bitch AR, he does use specialized tools like a reaction rod and vise block on the upper but I'd argue that if you're going to be building the upper yourself that it'd be a good idea to buy the proper tools for the job, since it is the part that can catastrophically fail on you if you fuck it up.
