Pic related is the 9mm AR I'm building.

The gas block/sight location is under the handguard, so the part of the barrel I want to mount the front sight on is only 0.725" instead of 0.750". Will a normal front sight base fit snugly anyways?
Or will I have to shim/screw it on?

Generally speaking, in a completely calm environment a flat-based bullet will ALWAYS be more accurate than a boattail bullet, because it gives a nice even driving surface with no gas bypass of the base.

That being said, once you factor in the wind drift that pretty much everyone has to deal with, past around 200 yards boattails are generally considered more accurate. They do tend to be harder to work up good loads for, and are far less tolerant of minute variances in powder (IE, for benchrest accuracy a culver-style grain-cutting measure is 100% required, whereas with flat-based bullets you can drop them with any old powder dropper).

There's a reason your 100m benchrest guys shoot light for caliber, flat based bullets at really high velocity and .22cal rifles are prevalent (specifically .22 PPC), 300m benchrest is an even split between light-for-caliber flat based bullets and midweight-for-caliber lightly boattailed bullets with a high representation of the 6mm and .30cal rifles, and at 500m+ it's exclusively VLD-style heavy-for-caliber heavily boattailed bullets that's now almost exclusively 6mm or 6.5mm rifles.

I haven't seen a 7mm rifle at any match in 10 years, and that was a straight-up .284win. I haven't seen a .30cal rifle at a 300m+ shoot in 5 years, and that was a .30br that the guy was trying to pawn, he wasn't even shooting it.

Wait what? you want something decent but not a progressive, you lack experience so I will forgive you for not knowing that if you reload you will eventually wish you had bought a progressive to begin with, otherwise you'll end up with whatever press you bought first sitting to the side of your bench collecting dust.

IMO there is no really great progressive press, if you want to start ok get the Hornady LNL-AP but loctite the bushings in, if you want to spend good money and get good equipment get the Dillon XL650XL, it's a hell of a deal.

This being said buy quality measuring devices, a good set of dial calipers, a micrometer, and a good powder scale, preferably made by Ohaus for one of the major reloading brands like RCBS.

http://shop.deztacticalarms.com/A2-Fixed-Front-Sight-Clamp-on-750-w-Bayonet-Lug-DEZ-1035-GB.htm

This popped up when searching for the Armalite one recommended, apparently the Armalite one is no longer made or I just can't find it.
>>
>>32722572

Ok, If you don't mind turning the shell plate manually you can get the Dillon 550, it is a good and solid press, but you will eventually want more than 4 stations. This is why I went with the Hornady because it has 5 stations and automatically indexes each time you pull the handle, the XL650 is still a better press though, they all have their idiosyncrasies.

Anyone own the Magpul Pros AND KAC Micros?

Want a comparison.
>>
>>32722572
If you want to do rifle rounds, the 650XL is the best.

The Hornady LnL-AP is okay. The press frame itself is solid, I like the quick-change bushings better than I like separate toolheads *for dies* but the bushing my powder dropper is in always works loose. Loctite that one in, use it as a dedicated station for powder.

The powder dropper the Hornady comes with is...meh. It's accurate, but the plastic "bottle" part keeps fucking separating from the cast base on me, and I've dumped probably $200 worth of Varget on the floor over the last 2 years as a result. Superglue "fixes" it for about 4 months. I haven't found shit-all yet that reliably sticks to the cast iron of the dropper body that won't shrek the plastic bottle.

Dillon makes carbide .223 dies. They are worth getting for production work, but I find I get a lot more runout with them than I do my RCBS small-base dies, which gets more runout than my Forster match dies (but cost 4x less).

Buy a Lee "unbreakable" universal decapping die and a second decapping stem for it if you ever intend to mess with range scavenged brass or anything with a crimped/staked/sealed primer. They're by no means actually unbreakable, and Lee is really good about replacing them for free when you DO break it, but they take a week or so to get the new one to you so have the spare stem handy so you don't have downtime.
>this is literally the only Lee product you should EVER buy unless you shoot cast bullets

I have a KAC Mod1 so it comes with the KAC micros, and my friend has the Magpul Pro set.

Personally I think the Pro would be a better option simply b/c it has a stronger detent sprint to keep the sight up right or folded down.

The KAC Miro is fairly easy to knock down, which especially for the front BUIS, being able to have it up when you need it is quite important.

I do prefer KAC's aesthetic over Pro.

1. We will bully you unmercifully
2. They're shit, which is why point 1.

If you need an explanation on why they're shit, okay.
>too fat to be a skinny handguard, too skinny to fit over literally any suppressor
>heavy for their size
>despite having a 1.75" OD, has a 1.4" ID, meaning it will not fit some adjustable gas blocks
>position of the 2 integrated QD sockets means the QD points won't clear a lot of barrels and are thus unusable with anything other than a pencil profile
>the v1 requires a specialty, proprietary-height picatinny rail that increases weight even further and is only sold by ALG for $20. This is not unreasonable for a pic rail section, but [it's an mlok rail, why you gotta make proprietary shit mandatory to mount iron sights]
>the specialty, proprietary-height pic rail section is held on by standard, cap-head hex screws. These screw heads protrude into 2 of the recoil lug cross-slots, severely limiting the placement of any front sight you use and outright prohibiting the use of several (including the KAC Micro and Troy folding)
So basically it's a fat heavy rail that has unusable features and despite being M-Lok compatible can only use ALG accessories, and doesn't work with a statistically relevant number of front sights at all.

Did I also mention that by the time you buy the proprietary $20 pic rail segment it now costs more than other, better/lighter options?

The MI SSK/M rails are actually pretty nice, and the adhesive is just a loctite substance that's more of a suggestion than a requirement. They are, as the name implies, super slim and light and look decent.
>>
>>32722972
For the rail? Around 150 maybe? I feel like there's not alot in that price range.

Ideal for me would be a free float version of Magpul Moe with a place for front mbu too bad they don't have that.

>>32722975
Why do I need that?

Either way considering the ALG less now that I see I have to have the cowitness shit

For around the same price as an EMR v1+cowitness rail or EMR v2 you can get stuff like Faxon's mlok handguard or the UTG Pro mlok handguard. Both of which are better handguards.
or
>http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XUTGMTU006SSM&name=UTG+Pro+Super+Slim+M-Lok+13+in.+Handguard&groupid=7500&fprdct=1

If you can go up to $200 you'd have about 20 different options.

Are you dead-set on mlok? I prefer it but there's nothing wrong with dickmod, and there's some really high quality dickmod handguards in the $180-190 range.
>>
>>32722985
Ok maybe it's not but it's way more than I want to spend. I was going to go ultra cheap under 500 but after building the lower I kind of want to build an upper too.

I will say, build a lower is super easy as long as you have punches, a screwdriver, and a hammer.
Buying at a gun show is a good way to get fucked. So don't buy anything without researching. You can always order something and have it shipped to an FFL
. >>32723157
Right on both counts. Gun shows are great for looking around and finding unique/rare stuff, but most of the more common stuff is marked up a bit.

Glock triggers aren't the worst I've felt. I put a connector in my 26 which improved it a bit, but becoming familiar with the trigger will help too. Practice with those paper plates and you'll soon see there's probably no reason to switch. The sights are a must though.

>I usually like to finger fuck whatever gun I plan on buying just to make sure everything checks out, so I usually don't buy online
ARs are fucking stupid simple, you don't have to worry about it being fucked up. Just in case you do happen to get struck by lighting and end up with a lemon, you have a warranty to take care of it.

Buy this and have it shipped to your LGS.

It isn't. I'm not a huge glock fan, but their triggers are far from the worst. They're consistent, and the safety lever helps keep you from pushing and pulling if you use it correctly.

A variable?

Honestly just found a good deal on a holosun and I think I'm about to order this sonofabitch
>>
>>32723880
I have both a 1-4 and a holosun red dot. the only reason I went with a red dot was because it was for a sub-sonic 300 blk out. Unless you are building a 100yard and in (10.5" ar) rifle, I wouldn't go with a red dot. A magnified optic or variable allows you to identify targets at range, be more precise, have reference points to compensate for drop. A red dot gets you nothing other than no zoom.
>>
>>32723904
Are there any variables under 200 that are worth getting ? I'm thinking no

I just found a holosun hs503c for 120 if the code works, hard to pass up.

>>
>>32723997
Do you also think I would be better served with a variable?

I know I can get a magnifier later if I want for the red dot but at that point I would've spent so much (probably) that i would've been better off with a higher end variable. If I did decide that. But I don't know that I would

cantilever mount can be had for cheap, it's a 30mm tube so it has a good field of view. not the best view of the reticle, only the very center dot illuminates and at 1 zoom it's pretty much a red dot. it may cost a lil more but buy once cry once.

>>
>>32724072
I couldn't get the camera focused very well. with a 100 yard zero shooting 60gr hornady's out of a 14.5" barrel 200 is bottom of the dot, 300 is top of bottom cross-hair and 400 is where the thin line meets the thick line for the bottom cross-hair. I wish I would have gotten the PA 1-6 though
>>
>>32724131
I have heard people say the 1-6 is better

Does the illumination on these scopes have the same problems for people with astigmatism as red dots? I've actually never used an illuminated scope.

I think for what I do (steel past 100 yards usually between 4 and 10 inches) a variable would be better but I almost want to buy the holosun to just because the price.

All cassette triggers are suboptimal.

If you're having to save money, buy an MBT. If you're not having to save money, buy both an MBT and an SD-E and figure out which one you like better, then return the other one.

if youre not gonna buy a dedicated suppressor for each rifle & pistol, check out the surge & obsidian from rugged suppressors. They both can be swapped between a long and short cofiguration, and have interchangeable endcaps for sub caliber applications.

Also, comparade to aac, youd have a much more solid mount, and better customer service.

silencershop has them

they are a smaller outfit. in short you trade the bulk production pricing from a company like sico for a more individualized experience.

every complaint ive heard about liberty is about "what you get for the money" on their more standard cans. they are still popular with folks looking for warranties on a wide range of caliber rarings that most of the larger companies dont rate for.
