I mean, the G3 has better POTENTIAL accuracy than the FAL for a number of reasons, but idk. Are you just not used to the HK drum sights? I know a lot of people like to bitch and moan about HK-style sights being weird to use.

If I were you I'd just toss it on a lead sled and figure out definitively if there is something up with the rifle itself.

It was probably just a bad round. Shit like that can happen with any ammo. Steel case is generally made by slavs though so it can be more likely to have issues. I've never had a problem in any of my rifles though.

>>32643936
I never understood why people complain about HK sights. This is the only place I've seen people who have trouble with them. The 100 setting is kinda weird but it's just a notch and post. Everything else is just a peep sight. If you don't like the 100, just zero it at 200.

>>32643975
The G3/HK91 is in a bunch of video games. The PTR itself is actually in one of the Battlefield games I think. If you're in the south/ on the east coast somewhere you should come to the NC meet.

You're not wrong, but HK pattern rifles have a lot more going for them in the accuracy department than the FAL does.

Out of the box, they're probably both 2-3MOA rifles, but from what I understand the G3 is easier to accurize. Theres gotta be a reason that only Ireland has tried to make FAL DMRs while tons of other countries use G3 DMRs.

FAL doesn't come free floated. Roller delayed blowback is inherently easy to keep accurized.

You don't want an FAL free floated.
A rigid handguard is going to be generally better for FAL accuracy, the gas system it uses needs to be tamed

Gunplumber and whatacountry still have IMBEL kits (as well as people on the forums and gunbroker), the hard bit is going to be getting the receiver since your only option is to wait for the next group buy on the files.

Also, it might or might not be worth it to make sure you have an original IMBEL barrel for the chrome memes, since DSA doesnt make chromed ones.

Why come you're gun has 5 feets?
>>
>>32645152
For the most part probably not. Assault rifles are just too practical to pass up. BRs are largely relegated to DMR duty. Greece however retains the G3 and has no interest in 5.56mm, and Turkey just adopted an AR10 to phase out their G3s, so there are a few holdouts.

>>32649318
Yours doesn't?
>>
>>32649333
But theoretically, if a battle rifle was created that was cheaper, recoiled about the same, had the same amount of noise and blast and was as light as an M4, could it become more practical? I'm thinking a roller delayed blowback with some recoil reducing stock tech, a noise redirecting muzzle brake, and lots of polymer parts could work. Soon enough those new cases are going to replace brass that are lighter and stronger, making BRs even more practical.
>>
>>32650398
theoretically you could use whatever tech enabled such a rifle to make an even cheaper, softer-shooting, quieter, lighter 5.56 gun
>>
>>32650474
But 556 already has recoil, weight, and blast that isn't overwhelming.
>>
>>32650505
And?
>>
>>32650558
So bringing the recoil blast and weight of a BR down to the level of an M4 is more valuable than reducing these in an M4.
>>
>>32645596

1MB, 3264x1836px
I like 308 ...
>>
>>32650398
>>32650474
Maybe. But the practicality of battle rifles is environmentally dependent. In a desert like where a lot of US fighting has recently been occurring, a great deal of engagement occurs at greater distances in more open areas, where the extra distance afforded by the use of full-power rifle rounds is important and the longer barrels would be less of a hindrance. In an urban, modernized environment, like the one American SWAT teams face, assault rifles become much more practical. Intermediate rounds are much lighter, allowing for an officer to either carry more, or carry the same amount at a reduced weight and bulk. The rifles themselves are much lighter, enhancing maneuverability, and can afford to be much shorter, making them easier to move about and aim quickly indoors, and the shorter effective range of 5.56 stops mattering when the asshole you're firing at is <50m away. Similar could be said about submachine guns. It's all about the environment and the likelihood the enemy is wearing armor.
>>
>>32650671
So for a BR to be worthy of becoming a service rifle it would need to be much better in shorter range engagements than current BRs. Which, considering a long barrel length is necessary for good 308 performance, is a pretty hard thing to do. Any big cartridges better suited for shorter barrels?

I almost mentioned bullpups specifically to say that they wouldn't be an option. See:

http://anarchangel.blogspot.ca/2005/03/why-bullpups-are-persistently-bad-idea.html?m=1
>>
>>32650891
None of those are really show-stopping problems.
By his own admission, the biggest problem is the tendency of bullpups to have a rearward weight bias, which is easily corrected either with a heavier barrel or by bolting a bunch of tactical crap onto the front of the gun.
If nothing else, the MDR is nearly a foot shorter than a FAL with the same barrel length; you could put a silencer on it and fix the balance issue while still having a shorter OAL than a conventional layout and being dramatically quieter.
>>
>>32651046
It's not about show stopping problems, it's about a bunch of little problems that make the design a bad idea for militaries. They're more complex, and more awkward to use.
>>
>>32650757
Long barrel length is not required for .308 to perform well.

The muzzle velocity of match 308 from a 16" bbl is the same as the same round at 100yds from a 20" bbl.

Use better powder if your concerned about powder still burning.

From a 13" bbl, the same ammo is still super sonic at 800.
>>
>>32651862
you can talk m.v. all day but shorter barrels= shorter effective range
>>
>>32651967
Yes.
But if your going .308 over 6.5 creedmoor in the same size/weight rifle, your not trying to get a 1000 really. And since the banter has been about battle rifles regaining ground, the effective range isn't a concern.
>>
>>32651862
Yeah I just took a look and it seems you're right. I hate that there's still so much potential energy wasted at 16 inches, but as you say it's really unnecessary. Also 16" BRs are fucking aesthetic.

A larger caliber SPR would make sense to get rid of the fucking Mk14s still in service. 18" rifle gassed small frame AR10 with M-Lok or Keymod free-float handguard and a maximum weight under 7.5 pounds unloaded with no attachments and under 1 MOA extreme spread for three 10 shot groups would work well.

Retains the manual of arms with the AR15, highly accurate for long range engagements, still useful in close quarters if needed.

I still just don't see how anything can be any inherently better the AR10, and non-piston derivatives, approach.

.308 makes big recoil. Nothing more efficiently, correctly (from a motion perspective), or totally reduces recoil as well as ARs, while staying truly inline (that's the motion perspective).

Am I missing something here? I know ARs are pretty fucking reliable, so... Why would you an anything else?

SCAR has less felt recoil than an AR10 with the same brake, even though the SCAR weighs less. Your also incorrect that .308 has a lot of recoil, its a kitten.

Both are good
>>
>>32661412
SCAR's recoil is not inline though, follow up shots should be less perfect.

Also, it seems like most of what can be done for other rifles to make them recoil nicer can be applied to the ARs ontop of their unique benefits too. tl;dr Still no reason to own anything but an AR, it has all the exclusive recoil management.
>>
>>32661360

>>
>>32661365
>Am I missing something here? I know ARs are pretty fucking reliable, so... Why would you an anything else?
Depends on what you mean by reliable. From what I hear from AR10 owners is that they are picky on which ammo they like to be fed. The SCAR will take it all and if need be you can easily change out gas screws.
>>
>>32662014
So ALL AR10s are picky eaters?

There's no known chow-hounds on the market?
>>
>>32661826
But the SCAR recoil is inline, follow up shots are fine. Shot one, its a non-issue. The things that make the SCAR recoil less cannot be done with an AR10 asides from the brake.

A Vector-Kelly VKE-91 for like $1500-2000. In that price range you might also be able to snag a pre-ban Greek EBO-made G3/SAR3 imported by Springfield Armory, or a Portuguese FMP-made G3S. Then there's Moore Dynamics MAD-91 for like $2500, then most HK91s you'll see are at least $2500 now.

Zenith has been suggesting they'll import a MKE-41 from MKE in Turkey, but who knows if it's ever going to happen.

PTR-91 vs FAL vs M1A Scout?
My thoughts: PTR is cheapest, followed closely by FAL, then a few hundred more to get M1A. I'm mostly worried about how the rifle shoots (accuracy+reliability) cost of mags being reasonable, and aftermarket/ability to mount a scope. My intent is for this rifle to be for anything greater than 300 yds, as my AR-15 could probably do at least that.
Should I maybe just save for a premo AR-10 or a SCAR-17? What does /k/ think?

Question for you guys.

I'm planning on doing an FAL build and am currently looking at two particular parts kits. On one hand, I've got an IMBEL M964 kit for $575. On the other, I found a Steyr StG58 kit for $850. Both are matching and have original barrels, though the IMBEL also has a bayonet, and the Steyr seems to be lacking its flash hider (and bipod, but I know not all StG58's actually had one to begin with).

Is it worth the extra money to get the Steyr, or should I just stick to the IMBEL and not worry about it?

Yep. The chambers are chrome lined, but none of the bores are. That being said, they are some of the best FAL barrels ever made and anyone would be lucky to have one in decent shape.

So they dropped the FAL and started from scratch.
You either deal with it and get the best looking rifle in existence, or settle for an FAL.

Not really the same price range but yes I've been looking at that. It seems like I could build an equivalent or better AR-10 for way less though. I've seen both AR-10's and SCAR-17's hit out to 600m consistently with no hiccups, so I'm not really sure which is more accurate or if it even matters.

You said comparable. So when I start looking at feature sets, only thing close is an LMT. If you just want accuracy, yes, you can get an AR10 down to half moa. SCAR 17s are just a hare under moa at best generally.

Of course the counter to that argument is (PLEASE FN, PLUHHEEEZZZE) the Mk20

>>
>>32686423
I apologize for the word "comparable" then. I'm not sure what your criteria for that is, but I meant comparable in cost, as the upper end AR-10s go for around 3.5k and so does the SCAR-17 it seems like. Am I missing some even higher end AR-10?

actually it makes sense, the L1A1 is what the british were using as their military rifle so it would probably have been easier and cheaper to get those instead of buying g3s off the black market. This might be false but it makes sense.
>>
>>32686219
It works if you train hard enough on single shot. You can shoot pretty darn fast, as fast as you would ever need to anyway.
>>
>>32669528
>>32669528
pretty much this. Their are more expensive g3 base rifles out there than the ptr but cheaper than the hk but they are either collectors items of lower quality or custom build one offs from competent gunsmiths.
Eventually though, that one turk company is supposed to be bringing in g3s at $1500 and clear plastic mags but i don't know when.
>>
>>32669671
the thing is, the SARs and FMPs are about the same quality as the ptr but for about double the money. Can't speak for the Vector-kelly or the Moore dynamics guns.
Though, wasn't vector that one company that changed its name because it had a reputation for building junk at obscene prices, only to continue the practice?
>>
>>32672892
>>32672819
this but not quite. The origional g3 semi autos that hk would be hands down the best because it wans't a clone just semi auto, followed by the hk41 then the hk91 then some higher end custom guns, then ptr91.
so basically this>>32673501
