In the market for my first plate carrier. Should I buy my exact size, or do I want it a little roomy to accommodate for the plates?

Whatever I need it to that fits

When I was in college I used it daily as just a book/laptop bag. It's big enough for a change of clothes and toiletries so I've used it as an overnight bag many times. I've used it as a dayhike bag countless times, but never an overnight camping bag, although it may be possible in warm weather. It's also my go-to for a carry-on and has been to multiple different countries with me. I occasionally use it as a range bag to hold magazines and ammo. I bought it as a dayhike bag but I've used it for all sorts of different stuff.

Not entirely useless but yeah you're pretty close. I keep a backpack rain fly in mine, along with a couple of ziplocks for things like my wallet and phone for waterproofing. Ziplocks are actually great for quick and dirty waterproofing.

Anything that goes into that pocket needs to be able to be flat. It's more about the looks than anything.

Never ever buy a PC too big for your body. Loose goose plate carriers look ate up as fuck. Nothing says 'I don't know what the fuck I'm doing' like a loose goose plate carrier that you need to adjust every few minutes cause it's flapping in the wind like a goats asshole.

i wear medium regular uniforms and wear a small vest for reference. i recommend getting a vest custom sewn for whatever plate size suits your body type, or doing the whole 8x10 plate front and 10x12 rear deal.
>>
I don't get the point of "muh military green" gear. Why wouldn't you get a normal looking backpack that's weatherproof (some school bags offter this) instead of this meme tacticool green shit? Isn't the point to try to NOT look like you're LARPing in the woods and to, you know, blend in better to not draw attention to yourself?

Assuming you're talking about the pack I have in these pictures, it's a general use range/truck bag. I've got everything from plain old jansport looking packs top big ass trail packs. Use what works, that 5.11 came to me as part of a trade and has served its purpose well. Wouldn't be walking around the city or taking it on planes though. Assuming you've got a PC, chest rig and/or rifle on with it, the pack isn't going to do much as far as standing out goes.
>>
A pack is actually on my list of things to get. Any recommendations? I've heard good things about Maxpedition and Grey Ghost Gear.
>>
>>32503313
A "pack" could range anywhere between a camelback hydration bladder carrier and an 85L exterior frame alpine backpack. You're going to have to be way more specific as to what you need out of the backpack.

>>

Maybe I'm just retarded but there's basically no difference between camo's usability other than colors. Pattern hardly seems to matter but I cpuld2be totally wrong...

Moreover Camo autists are really more just camo hipsters. Anyone who bitches about camo almost always bitches about popular camo's, or new camo's that no one's used yet but have been hyped up.

For the sake of buying gear for civilian and hobby use just pick a fucking color set and any pattern will work it literally doesn't matter.
>>
>>32503485
This tho. I never got this either.
Shit on Condor and airshit but otherwise a plate carrier is a fucking plate carrier. It holds plates and has molle, just don't spend a fuck ton on one unless you know that you want a specific one.

>>32503518
I'm no camo expert but I tend to agree, people just no-life it with this stuff because it gives them something to bicker about though.
>>
>>32503406

you can mod it however you want to make it more comfortable. The shoulder straps are detachable to mount to a PC or a rucksack frame / gun scabbard, and there's room for a hydration bladder and all that nonsense. It will also accept ridiculously large hip belts if weight distribution is a problem for your back.

Eberlestock with built-in scabbards have horrendous sway due to the nature of the pack separation. Also, made in China and brought back for a 20000% mark-up in price. Also, 1000d use, so they are heavy as fuck, and they don't even use Cordura. Literally fucking retard shit. 500d Cordura is 2x bombproof what Glen uses.

Is it possible to make KYWIs retain less?
I have some in my rig that retain just fine but pull out like butter.
I just bought a double mag tall esstac pouch for my belt and the KYWI inserts make it almost impossible to pull mags out without lifting my belt.
Do I just need to break them in? Tighten my belt? It already seems plenty tight as is. Maybe the short ones would work better?
>>
>>32503969

my eberle is infact probably vietnam slave labor made, and the 1000d they use is more of a water-resistant ripstop material than a heavy duty cordura that's bombproof just by feeling it's texture

i only own the g1 so i cant say if the other packs are worth the dime, but i literally see zero point in anyone having a 1000d cordura nylon pack unless they are going to use it as a shooting mat or going on a deployment

Running O courses in the military is not like a huge fundamental skill. It's a reasonable way to shake out your gear and see if stuff is going to flop around or fall off, but many times what you're doing isn't directly applicable to combat.

This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kttDFskTsOA&feature=youtu.be) kind of stuff is what's really useful in urban warfare. Being able to get onto roofs or higher floors without having to take stairs or elevators is key.

hello friends.

i was out practicing mag swaps today with my
BCM ar15 and my HSP chest rig.

im gonna be honest i had major issues getting snagged up on the magazine retention bungies.

do you guys think its worth having the added retention of the bungies or am i better off going with something like taco pouches with no top bungies?

essentially is it worth the added retention if you get snagged on shit while practicing
>>

Why is an army cadet talking like he's ex-SF?
>>
>>32507077
Bungies on top are fine, just leave them slid over to the side of the mag and voila, no more issues.

I detest the HSP as an overcluttered mess which people usually buy without knowing what they want to put in it, and then filling it out with junk because nature hates a void. yeah, thats what i was worried about. if i go by sapi plate sizes, most mediums will be 9½ x 12½, which will make a 10x12 kind of a tight fit. i thought about sizing up to a large, which is 10⅛ x 13¼, but i'm worried about the plate kind of bouncing around loose in the carrier if i went that route.

your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the plate carrier, tell them which plates you want to use, and get their recommendation. some companies' medium plate carriers will hold 10x12, others are too tight.
>>
>>32507077
Honestly they're fine if you're not being spastic. I had similar issues at first but ironed them out. If you loosen the bungees slightly or break them in so they don't put so much tension on the mags that may help a little as well

>>
>>32507708
Depends entirely on the fabric, it will almost certainly leave an outline of holes initially, but fabrics like a cotton weave would probably mesh back together after a bit, whereas twills and synthetics might not be so forgiving.

>>
>>32507112

Yeeeep. Main reason why I'm personally going for either some molle chest rig, or more likely, the Spiritus Micro rig. Those are still slim-ish while still letting you stay low profile.

>>32505830

I want one bad as an EDC/schoolbag, but I can't currently justify spending $100+ on a pack that I can't put a schoolbook in, unless it looks deceiving. Down the road I'm planning on buying the Umlindi/Recon belt, and mating a Tara on top for woods trips, but it'll be a while. Does anyone here have a tara and happen to be able to fit books inside of it? It certainly looks large enough, it's just the center zip that I think would block access for hardcover books.

>What are smocks for?
They're good as a sole means of load carriage.

>Are they weather jackets? Are they for cold?
Typically windbreakers worn over a mid layer or base layer (even just a t-shirt).
Occasionally made rainproof, but usually are just cotton or polycotton.
Probably anything as low as -5 celcius (23 farenheit), but would be uncomfortable past 25 celcius (77 farenheit).
Can be used for colder if you wore some type of base layer (I like merino wool).

>Why smock and not a softshell? Or is it basically a softshell?
Smocks are usually a lot cheaper. A $50 smock will be good, but a $50 soft shell will be shit more than likely.
Smocks have many pockets for load carriage, as mentioned before.

I don't care how much scotchgard you spray on it, it's not waterproof, and it will soak through eventually. Probably at the seams and zippers first.

Softshells, and for that matter, hard shells, need to be periodically re-treated with a DWR finish of some sort. Even Goretex shit needs this. Unless the water is beading up on the surface of the fabric, the ability of the Goretex membrane to transfer moisture away from your skin goes way down. Basically if the outer fabric is getting soaked at all, it needs to be re-treated.

Heads-up RE: this company. Poland-made, light-weight for what it is, and probably the best option out there atm.

I spent a few days looking for a replacement for my Eberlestock and this is about the crux of what is available for people that put their gear through hell. This is on my short list.

If you want something to sustain you for multiple days; they've got 3 models (each with multiple capacities). "Reindeer", "Wildcat", and "Raccoon".

so what i do is clip it to the side of an ammo pouch them put it into the grenade sleeve and put the strap around it and clip it in. or i clip it to the side of my buttpack and its held in place underneath my canteen.

a dagr pouch would work great, another option is a molle gp pouch with alice clips threaded in instead of malice clips.

there are also numerous alice radio pouches.

Bought this after christmas. Got cabelas cards so ended up paying like $75.

Double breast pockets, hip pockets, left shoulder pocket.

Hood rim and back of hood adjustable. Hem adjustable.

Velcro cuffs and pit zips.

Long back. One thing is odd, the sleeve on the top of the hand is slightly long too.

Very light fleece(which I wasn't too excited about when I got it), has turned out to be alright, at least for this weather.

Wore it out hiking in the woods for an hour in slight drizzle/sleet, did not get wet.

Seems pretty abrasion resistant.

Would definitely buy again for the on sale price of 135

Can you fellow operators that own Glocks use any of the magazine extesions? What brand do you use and what has your experience been with them? I'm interested in them but I've heard that they can potentially decrease reliability because your altering the how long the spring sits in the magazine as compared to the factory testing. I've also seen videos where you can't actually get the supposed additional rounds into the magazine, example its a plus three extension but you can only get one or two extra rounds in. Any constructive input is welcome, thanks in advance.

Six of those plates, pictured left, will be inserted into side panel carriers and hung off the shoulder from a pair of drop leg platforms, also pictured left, sourced from voodoo tactical. The platforms have a spacious interior pouch that will probably accomodate an amply sized iiia or lighter soft insert or a trauma pad for rigidity. Also included in the image are sword frogs unrelated to the build.

More to follow when side panel pouches arrive.

>why straight steel?
This is a weight test and proof of concept of a cheap DIY ballistic pauldron against the dedicated HASP shoulder panels and their high-end price point, if it works in raw steel, it works in ar500 memeplates and most certainly works with poly, ceramic, and composite plate formats.

I'm not sure where you could find Arcteryx LEAF in a big box retail store. It would almost certainly have to be a place that caters to the LE/MIL customer. You might try looking at the website and see if there are any places near you that sell it. Or maybe try calling one of the online sellers and ask them about sizing on the Drac.

Can we post belts?
Just got mine and aside from an ifak, which I already have in my rig, I'm not sure what else to get. Maybe a dump pouch.
I intend to have it for an increased load capacity for my rig or to use it solo at the range.
>>
>>32512725
>belt
>has suspenders

no thats no longer a belt but load bearing gear.
>>
>>32512725
I would get a smaller IFAK for your belt.
A big one in your pack and a small one on your belt is pretty convenient.

A knife, perhaps?
>>
>>32512725
>I have open space on my belt, how do I fill it.

Wrong question.

Instead go out using the belt how you intend to use it and see what gear you are ending up needing handy.

Just because you have the ability to attach a lot of gear doesn't make it mandatory.
>>
>>32512829
>asking people how they setup their belt is a bad idea until you have your belt setup
What.
>Instead go out using the belt how you intend to use it and see what gear you are ending up needing handy.
Is pretty spot on though. If you already have a rig you need to look at what that offers and what it doesn't. Even though you already have an IFAK you can and probably should get another on the belt like anon said.
As far as dump pouches I don't use them but I don't use a belt. I'd imagine trying to index mags under stress a bit more tough than on a chest rig. I am of the thought camp that I am dropping the mag if I need to in a combat situation and I need a fast reload.
But when you have only two mags like you have on the belt you may want an easier way to store mags rapidly.
I would also get a carabiner or something to attach soft things like gloves or what have you.

Has anyone tried Direct Action gear at all? They seem relatively unheard of, and their parent company is Helikon-Tex, a Polish company. Apparently they cater to LE/MIL in Europe but the only feedback I can find in a quick search was from a couple of airsofters.

Pic related is the bag I was looking at.

>>32510758

They're more expensive than grabbing a couple of Magpul or ETS extended mags, both of which work fine.

With belts it's simple as hell. Find a spot where your hand instinctively goes to for ammo, radio, medical, etc. Don't stick anything over the ass/ center back, use a leg drop square of PALS/MOLLE if you must.

So. radios. You guys seem to run radios in a very ...different fashion. Why is it in everybody's waist and pushing into themselves?

UHF/VHF doesn't travel well through water... Like the human body. Get the antenna away from you. Next if you're going to keep it near you, keep the shit in a pocket and the antenna away from your elbows. The only thing you want access to is the radio set itself. You're going to damage the unit by going prone on it, jamming the antenna into the ground breaking he connector, or squelch yourself out by laying on it throwing all the RF into the ground or absorbed by your body. Seriously. On top of that, get a police mike so you're not holding that to your face. If the mic has a light on it, disable the light/remove it.
>>
>>32513334
>UHF/VHF doesn't travel well through water
Correct, but a few inches of body materials worth of water won't really make a difference.

But this post is good.
> get a police mike so you're not holding that to your face
Most people have a push to talk
(If you don't have a push to talk get a fucking push to talk)

Most people run the antennae through molle on the back of the plate carrier if they have a whip. Granted most people buy the radio and that's it, so those people are stuck with the ducky but for their uses I'm sure it works fine but this anon's correct for the most part.

The antenna should come out of your molle a little high if you're running it on a carrier.
>You're going to damage the unit by going prone on it
Doubt it, most good handhelds can withstand being run over by cars so it being in a pouch and bouncing around then you lying on top of it will hardly scratch the thing.

I don't recommend being rough with your radio, but it's not an iPhone and most have a pretty good case.
>>
>>32513051
Thanks senpai
I love that video btw, the french accidently find SFOD-D and the dude has on a tshirt and jeans
>>
>>32513392
I'm more worried about the point of connection between the antenna and the unit. That's a structural "fuck zone". Also antennas have resistors and other shit in there. Bending the antenna can snap the wire and impede transmittal if not increase the SWR... causing your set to reset (internal safeties) or burn out entirely.

co7wt.blogspot. com/2015/12/dissecting-baofeng-fm-v-u-rubber-duck.html
>>
>>32513444
Yeah if you use a whip it should be intuitive but don't let it "whip" around. Not only is it annoying as fuck but you're gonna break the thing.

Get an coax female to male cable and route it to your whip which is tucked into some molle somewhere out of the way (behind you is best).
>>
>>32513334
Do you guys have licenses to use the radios?

I hear the HAMS and FCC are pretty anal about that sort of thing, and what better to raise public opinion than to bust a bunch of "white surpremecist survivalist gun nut terrorists" over radio usage?

You should be more worried about local HAMmers sticking their stationary rigs up your ass if you piss them off. There's a lot of EW that can go on there and the software on your handset has backdoors any sigint element can use if they track you down instead of the FCC, so I suggest reading up on the vulnerabilities of the system and be conscious of minimizing your air time through ettiquette.

My local arrl branch is doing testing in Feb. I'm passing with at least 28/35 with basic parroting of answers from the online test shit.

Most of y'all with Baofengs can jsut drop the power to 1 watt. Saves battery, reduces risk of SWR overheating, and you don't step all over ham freqs. Stay on MURS and put it on narrowband. Encryption is legal on MURS. I got a raspi that I plan to turn into a home made VINSON unit in my spare time.
