Some competitions require you to retain mags that aren't empty.
>>
>>32514520
There does seem to be an inverse relationship between amount of posts and amount of use.
>>
>>32514408
It depends on your environment, but:
-3L of water + one or two canteens
-Water filter
-Mess kit (+alcohol or gas stove if you like using these)
-Tent or tarp
-Sleeping mat or hammock
-First aid
-Food (minimize cans, get dry stuff instead)
-Extra ammo
-Toilet paper
-Two lighters
-Electronics that you want (GPS, Radio, MP3 to listen to nasheeds)
-Batteries for stuff that you have
-Extra socks and underwear. Seriously
-If it's not in your First aid: chapstick, sunscreen
-Sunglasses
-Map and compass
-Plushie for comfort (not mandatory, but strongly recommended)
>>

Pretty sure the Nagoya is the best bang for your buck. Which one were you looking at? The NA-771 or the NA-24J? The 24J looks to be an inch longer than the 771. Not really sure what the difference would be between the two. I'm actually also in the market for a better antenna on my UV-5R. I mean the most I use mine for is to patch into my buddies walkie talkie's when we go innawoods.

I keep a head lamp with my binoculars in a pouch on my chest rig. If you're stuck out at night and need a light source a hands free one is the best option. I also have a small hand held flashlight I keep on my belt.

Tripping on my tent in the middle of the night and having to fix it would've been even more of a nightmare than it already was without a head lamp.
>>
>>32515133
It's actually just a massive bed frame. it was actually custom made by my grandpa. He did a lot of woodwork, mostly art in the form of carved birds actually. Shit's pretty cool, I have this amazing eagle grabbing a fish mid-flight that he carved out of some wood he found out in the desert. It's amazing. Anyway, he also made the bed frame and I specifically asked if he could make it tall so I could store stuff under it. So that's why it's super tall. Notice comic book longboxes can fit under it without issue.

Just missing a tourni, celox, and chest seal, anything else?

I've also got betadyne, calomine lotion, hydro perox, various medicine cabinet solutions (ibuprofen, laxatives, anti-diarheal, antifungal, etc), a larger selection of bandages and pads; minus the above it's just missing an extra tourniquet or three, more clotting products, larger battle dressings, and an extra chest seal or two and the spare pouching to store all of it

Knowledge always trumps gear, so here we go.

Chest seal 101

Is there a puncture wound in the thorax?
There is? Ok. Don't panic. Clear the area of clothing/gear/blood. You need enough room for your chest seal on there, so keep that in mind.
Next, open the outer package of your seal, peal it off the backing being careful not to let it fold and stick to itself, and stick it on the wound. Some guys will tell you to do this at the moment the lungs empty, but it makes little difference in the real world.
Almost done. Now, roll the guy over and check the other side. An exit wound? Well gosh, we are going to do the exact thing again. You out of chest seals? Bullshit. You can use the backing from the first one to cover the wound and secure it in place on all sides. Don't stress that flutter valve stuff with the 2 or 3 inch tape that every good IFAK has.

There. Now you know.

I like the effort, and ziplocked gloves are nice.

Now, I have mellowed in my old age and numerous article 15s, so I will tone down my next bit. Unless you are expecting a life threatening menstruation, you have no need for tampons.

I think you should break your first aid stuff up into two categories. First, the things that cope with immediate threats to life. This is your TQs, chest seals, rolled/compressed gauze, ITBs, tape, NPA, NCD (ONLY if you are actually trained, that thing can kill you otherwise), that sort of thing. That's your IFAK stuff.
Next, go through your "nice to have" stuff. Little bands aids, alcohol wipes, assorted pills, and all that. That stuff goes in your pack. I carry a small case with allergy/headache/diarrhea meds in my thigh pocket, but I am a field medic and don't want to go diving in my ruck every time Joe wants a placebo.
>>32516143
In days gone by there was this fixation on one-way valves in chest seals.

>>32516278
So only flutter one chest seal? Or am I misunderstanding. If in right is it best to valve the entrance or exit?
Could you do more 101 med supplies write ups if you had the opportunity? Would be much appreciated.
>>
>>32516278
I agree with all of this. Separate packs for life threatening and "ouch" means your trauma kit doesn't spill to fuck.

Tampons are one of those things that seems intuitive and clever, but ends up being stupid.
>>
>>32515664
Look at the Dark Angel Medical IFAKs for a starting list.
>>
>>32516352
Stupid how, please, they're in there on recommendation of a combat medic.
>>
>>32516278
Everything in yellow is ifak, tampons are there to temporarily plug multiple holes until the responder can get to each one in turn. Everything else is broken up into external pouches on my pack, all the placebos in one with the betadyne and calomine, bandages and spare sheers in another. I'm waiting on a fourth pouch to stuff in the last bits and then I'll probably reorganize so i have an 'immediate response' pouch and all the rest broken up into the other three.
>>
>>32516403
Less effective (and liable to cause damage if you actually stick it all the way in) on a torso than an occlusive seal, and not nearly enough gauze and it won't be packed in correctly in the irregular wound shape for an armpit or groin. Carrying medical gauze and a way to pressure dress it works.

well then he's stolen valor or retarded

there's barely any gauze in a tampon, if you take one apart. if you need to stop a serious bleeder it's not enough to just poke a tampon in there, you're going to need like an order of magnitude more gauze in there to apply sufficient pressure.

I have heard that from every medic I've ever learned from, but didn't want to proclaim it without a citation.

But yeah, no bueno on those things. Hyfins, gauze, ACE/Israeli bandage, TQs, and medical tape is enough for 99% of first response by non-medics. I've had a lot of supplementary training and still want to pass of a casualty like a hot potato to a real doctor. The amount of people who think they are combat medical badasses from watching a few YouTube videos is shocking.

How much for me to get my hands on some?
>>
>>32516623
Nah, he just said he uses them to keep a wound contained while he deals with the worst injuries first. that's literally all he said on the matter when I started talking about building my ifak and getting a 'dumb grunt' medical kit strapped to my threeday
>>
>>32516745
Are you fucking retarded? Do you not know how a tension pneumothorax or hemothorax works?

Nigger. You 1 way valve it. What you just told him is to cap off the hole. Taping all 4 sides doesn't allow the air to escape. So there is no way for the air to escape the pleural and thoracic cavity... meaining the lung doesn't completely fill and complete the respiration cycle, there is pressure on the medial steinum or however is spelled.

Like fugg friendo, just stop giving medical advice. I don't need to know how to spell everything to know, you're probably going to get someone killed.
>>
>>32516758

do you NEED to put vaseline on? i figure it would help make a better seal but i dont think its required for it to work.
>>
>>32516794
Yet everybody teaches us to tape 4 sides. Guess the world is wrong and your right.
>>
>>32516778
That makes no sense for many of the above posted reasons^

You don't start doing invasive, time consuming stuff on a mass casualty situation.

In any case, your "dumb grunt" kit shouldn't be loaded out with mascas stuff anyway.

At least read some modern FMs and soldier skill books start to finish for medical. Not as good as real training, but it should help you identity nonsense when you encounter it.
>>
>>32516794
aren't most chest seals now built for "burping" by unsealing the corner with the pull tab?
>>
>>32516803

but if you tape all four sides how do you let air escape?
>>
>>32516573
I think the consensus was that it does absorb the bleeding, but it's not sterile, so...
>>
>>32516758
I have been doing the medic thing for a while and never encountered the Vaseline thing.
>>32516778
This story sounds like total nonsense. Any bleeding a tampon will manage is not life threatening.
>>
>>32516814

i find it hard to believe a device that is shoved inside the vagina ISN'T sterile in some way.
>>
>>32516826
its not. Skinny Medic just did a video on the whole Tampon vs Compressed Gauze
>>
>>32516794
TCCC uses fully occlusive for both DIY and factory made seals. Factory vented seals are acceptable, but DIY valves tend (based on TCCC guidelines) to not work as intended. A fully occlusive DIY will definitely not let air in. Factory made Hyfin seals don't have valves or provisions for them either.

If tension in the chest develops- which is not guaranteed, AND if a real medic isn't around to take over- that's why decompression needles exist.
>>
>>32516809
>What is a decompression needle
>>
>>32516807
Wait, he's got a point, popping a tamp into a hole is pretty fast and it MIGHT keep a bleed contained in the hole long enough to address any more serious wounds before pulling it and packing properly. Then again, I've never seen anyone dumb enough to plug and then unplug the bullet holes on a casualty. It's clear that whomever this mystery medic is, he was talking about using them on your most immediate patient as you work on them. that's valuable space i'd rather pack gauze rolls in though.
>>
>>32516826
They're not. The industry has no legal requirement to sterilize tampons and menstrual pads.

The vagina isn't a wound.

Think about q-tips. They're not sterile either.
>>
>>32516858

well sure if you're using a needle, but if you're just doing a chest seal you only tape 3 sides.
>>
>>32516840
>>32516870
Disregard that monologue, I clearly suck cocks, link on that video, I'm suddenly curious.
>>
>>32516825
Okay in BLS units, the jerry-rigged thing I've seen done is Vaseline gauze packs ripped open, take the gauze out, then place the package over the hole on the chest. Tape 3 sides with the opening on the side facing twards the ground.

>>32516808
From what I remember with Hyfins the 3 holes on it let the air kinda leak out but the blood makes a liquid seal essentially.

How about you guys get a primer on this shit. I'd recommend just getting some hyfins before we all 'tism over home made chest seals.

>>
>>32516921
The squad can afford them, it's just what I was taught for backup. It's nice to have contingency. 2 is 1. 1 is none. Right? Also, the Hyfins allow burping but I feel more comfortable just doing 3 sides of gauze tape and moving to the next person.

>>32516923

>>32517036
DIY valves don't work well. A fully occlusive seal is not a guarantee of causing tension, and even if it does develop, in most civilian situations emergency services should be pushing you aside before it becomes an issue.

But whatever, you do you and try to fuck around with Vasoline and finicky DIY relief valves in a high stress situation. Just don't do that shot to me.

CYMA AKs are actually really good, especially if they're the actual stamped ones. For the blanks all you do is ask the milsimwest page on facebook and they ask you some basic questions. I'd personally do blanks because people don't bring enough. Last event our squad had most of the blanks on our team.

>internal mesh lining added
>fabric to cover the buttons top prevent snagging

No Skub left in it anymore. I licked it clean long ago of that.

Current contents are a spool of tripwire, 9v battery (taped to prevent it from accidentally discharging), a mini emergency IR beacon, a roll of electrical tape, matches, and a lens cloth from an M40 mask kit (this can double as a large particulate filter for water before it is purified with tablets). Normally the can is water sealed with electrical tape.

The screws are hard to seat right and consequently I have stripped them like 2-3 times which I then have to tap and dye to fix. The comp I picked is awesome, but it blows hot gas back onto my hand so I have to wear gloves to shoot it. I'd have to eliminate the upper round-the-thigh strap and possibly sew hookside velco onto the belt adjustment portion

Flipping the belt loop around might actually give me enough slack to get rid of the strap hanging out the bottom, thanks.

pouches were swapped out for quiet non velcro smoke grenade clip pouches and the 40 rd pmag was causing mobily restrictions. Hence it was replaced with a 30rd lancer to reduce weight and improve ergonomics.

>not just using a tacticum belt

>>32518785
if your gonna run rifle plates gravity will drop the shoulders down unless they are ultra lite poly/ceramic plates. Think of it as running a micro plate carrier for your arms. You may have to adjust your shouldering position due to more frontal material. It was why I went with hoplite it may have limited coverage but it allows me to properly position my curved tavor stock.
>>
>>32518829
Mm, on the plus side, if the forward "roundel" plate sucks ass for shouldering, it's a loss of a cheap side panel carrier instead of hoplite's proprietary system and still boasts more coverage and protection for half the price point at worst, even with ultralights. Just getting the platform to sit right and high enough is the main hassle. The only real cost outside of it being an adhoc system than purposebuilt like the HASP is probably bulk, but hey, you get what you pay for and what you put the time into, so i might actually tech the build up and keep it on my rig.
>>

>>32518699
Just had an outside the box moment,I noticed the upper pals webbing and thought to
remove the upper belt clip system .and use either molle or malice clips to support the carrier for the shoulders. if your shoulder straps can support side molle attachments That should simplify it and reduce bulk while making it more durable and less prone to shifting. Try that out

It's an ALICE y-suspender right now, so I'm forced to muck around with the belt clip configuration, an affordable lbe with molle all the way up the suspenders is on my list, but low in priority. Also, 6x8 panels will ride higher from the same point as a 6x6, so, between folding the attachment point over and 6x8s riding over the top edge of the platform, it should sit at a proper height in the interim.

yea I don't have an as-600 just an opscore high cut with a front SLAAP plate installed. As-600 is light years better for the same price total ak 7.62 protection at 2100 fps v0 so with a .60 inch thick slaap plate, the front would stop full powered 2800 fps .308 and MSC stuff. It's poly so M855 would still zip through but m193 might be stopped with the slaap plate but it's unknown what would happen if m193 5.56 just struck the helmet alone.

2 way stretch fabric plate bag, corner cutting with bad fabric bad sewing and bad QC, not accurate to the original, bad design even airsofters who praised it when they got it originally I asked about it, later on, and they poo-pooed it in retrospect.
The cummerbund was really bad, didn't allow for you to put 5x9 plate backers and only allowed a 6x6 plate if even that!

the 4-way stretch fabric is what makes the PC so great, and toysoldier going with the 2 way stretch really ruins it for lots of people.

duct tape and para cord have been a thing the military has always done. Chicoms are used by everyone including US special operations. cost does not equal effectiveness.

i'm pretty sure that 9v is for starting fires. he had a little deal in the plastic bag that attaches to a 9v and it probably has a hot wire. if you bring steel wool it will burst into flame and you can start a fire really easily.

Someone bake some fresh bread damn it.

It's relegated to a truck/range bag, so can't report much as it's not something I take into the mountains or on the trails. That being said it has held up well to limited abuse, has a ton of internal space and compartments.

I wouldn't expect it to fall apart given the materials are quality and the stitching is squared away nicely. Wouldn't hesitate to use it on a hunting excursion or a few day trip into the wilderness if it's all I had.
