Easy to make, straighforward to use, can be used in a group with out restriction, can not easily be defeated by an improvised weapon because despite its simple construction common every day items dont tend to be that long, and those that do are not balanced or shaped well for combat.

Some sort of device that launches a spear over greater distances than the length of the target's spear. Preferably with reliable accuracy and power.

We could use a kinetic charge transferred rapidly into the spear to launch it... perhaps generated by the expansion of a chemical charge into a gas... stored within some sort of highly pressure resistant container with an opening for the loading of spears...


Perhaps we could even mount these onto boats or walls, to provide support to traditional spear equipped units. Maybe we could even replace spears entirely with lighter version of these...adapted to be carried into battle?

It's hard to overcome that reach advantage
Swordsmen in HEMA have a hard time getting past that long shaft. This isn't the video games where you just took the tip to the side and close the distance. They can retract the spear to make it shorter, they can just move back themselves. Meanwhile they can always keep the pressure in you with quick jabs and from father away too. I think I remember a woman naginata user winning some all-Asia armed combat competition because she knew how to use it.

There's a reason that perhaps the ultimate in dueling swords, the rapier IMO, became spear-like in function.

Takes a lot of training to get a spearman that can defeat armored opponents on 1v1s.

Its still a spear and trying to land the tip on weak spots isn't easy, especially because the target moves.

An armored opponent can just rush or grab the spear.

Not really. Swords could be carried as your primary arm without placing you at too significant of a disadvantage in any given scenario and saw a LOT more use comparatively.

It's risky proposition for the opponent. For one, it assumes that they have a free hand to work with which means not having a shield or second weapon which is already a disadvantage against a spear to begin with or that they dropped their other weapon to have a free hand to grab the shaft. A spearman also has countermeasures against an opponent that manages to grab the shaft and those that do are often off-balance because most of them try to dodge their body out of they way of the spearhead instead of redirecting it from a planted stance.
