I believe production quality will increase, as the thinking changed. The QBZ-95 series was developed in a time when the PLA's thinking was still rooted in the late 80s. That they even used polymer and not wood or stamped sheets for the furniture is already a big advancment in their thinking.

QBZ-95 and Type 97 are different in many aspects. Most ergonomic issues with the Type 97 is because of the rushjob-conversion to the 5.56 caliber, which removed the well-functioning AK-styled rock-in mag release and replaced it with some shitty small button.

Other issues, like the selector were addressed in the QBZ-95-1.

Issues like incompatibility with optics and high sight-line because of carrying handle can be directly attributed to the late 80s, early 90s mindset that drove the QBZ-95's design.

I guess there is a slot cover/seal in there - long and thin, moves a tiny little bit up or down to get out of the way of the charging handle. Nice solution to the awful and long lived dust cover/charging handle problem.

That's saving money right there. And its easier on logistics because its one back-pack per trooper, and not having to worry about how the fuck to carry several box mags. Most SAW's aren't going to go through 6-8 mags per outing. If they're going out for something where they'd be using more then that, they'd have to have a confident supply line following them.
