Why don't I see a lot of love for wrist map pouches here? I liked them pretty good while I was in. It's pretty handy dandy way to keep a zoomed in map of the local area and/or cheatsheets for various stuff (freqs, drops/holds, or even 9-lines don't have them memorized or they are updated to be 9+) easily accessible.

I just had the cheapest possible one from the PX, IIRC the junky Spec-Ops brand one, so I'm sure there are way comfier ones.

Wrist map pouches aren't rare at all. They are sold all over the place, I just never see anybody on /k/ using any of them.

>What ones are you talking about?

Any model of wrist map pouch. I'm talking about the concept, not autisming on a specific brand/model.

Like I said, the one I had was a cheapo pick up from a PX. Some shitty brand like Spec-Ops or similar, but even it worked pretty good.

Reposting from previous thread

I'm building an AR to learn precision marksmanship and applying ballistics. Once I get a scope I'm looking for a good way to transport my gear and rifle and would like to keep everything together in one package. I'm thinking of getting a cloth rifle case to also use as a shooting mat with MOLLE to attach a small back pack to, to carry other gear and use as a rifle support when a bipod won't work. Or I'm thinking about buying a back pack with a scabbard to use and just attach a shooting mat to it. Like a eberlestock low drag or gunslinger. What do you guys use and what would you prefer? As always budget matters but willing to spend the dosh on appreciable quality, especially if I can piece it together. I think I'm leaning towards a cloth case but unsure and looking for suggestions. Pic related is Eberlestock gunslinger 2
Any other ideas?

I wear it and don't give a fuck. BC came to a range I was running when I was wearing it and didn't say shit.

I originally bought it because I wanted my own for shit and giggles. But I started wearing for field ops and shit because I hadn't been to CIF yet at the time. It's pretty dope.
>>
>>32429194
Pretty interesting you're allowed to get away with a plate carrier when presumably everybody else is wearing full armor vests. Generally you require a signed waver for that along with a full CRM justifying a plate carrier usage in place of full armor.

But that may be because you've only been wearing it at a static range so far. Be ready to justify it for something like an explosives range or on actual deployment (as least if you are on a FOB and not an outpost).

This is what I use for my UV82HP with extended battery. Its the Blackhawk short radio pouch.

After having mine a while I would say dont bother with local EMS, Police, etc. It gets to a point you have too many channels. I keep a laminated card in my pack with local channels I want to listen in on.

I would say if you go to state parks get their freqs and add them.

Baofeng, extended battery, and an upgraded antenna is kinda important. Get you ham for maximum utility, but MURS, GMRS, and FRS should get you by if you're not using them too much, but keep in mind you won't be legal.

I've got the Milsim West pouch for my UV5R. It is well built, if not possibly overbuilt (I think a lot of tactical tailor other than the fight light stuff is overbuilt), and the MSW UV5R pouch is probably the best quality pouch for that radio. Keep in mind it only fits the UV5R with the extended battery.

People get weird about gear sometimes.Like dudes who blow all their money on 30% APR car loans acting like you're irresponsible for spending a bit more for decent gear.

I also remember a neverdeployed SNCO try to act hard by calling straight up calling me a "mall ninja" for having a triangular NOD plate. My platoon sergeant walked by and told him that those had been issued by the unit. "You know... for people that actually deployed."

How much experience you got evading guys rolling with thermals and Raven coverage? I was fairely impressed by the JRTC OPFOR's ability to defeat thermal camera usage by GRF (82nd guys mainly) in a full scale exercise.

Not like directly doing it with crazy anti-thermal suits or anything (although anti-thermal suits are bretty nifty). They just used smart angles, weather conditions, relied on complacency or distraction, and would minimize themselves and stop moving when a Raven was overhead. Basically just classic shit as old as Takur Ghar.

I did get to see the results of them "killing" the occupants of a three humvee convoy, taking the humvees back to the FOB, and then turning the .50 on the battalion's TOC from inside the wire.

Their tactics were so devastating that the GRF guys only limped through because of the observer/controllers kept handwaving everybody back to life very quickly.

82nd commanders didn't learn a fucking thing and spent the whole post-exercise bitching rather than reflecting.

Adding potato photo.

Anti thermal suits?

We just hid in the snow or the coniferous forests if we heard UAVs or rotarywing.

And yeah, we managed to drive two MBTs and 2 M113s into FOB WEST, where 173rd had their REMFs working on humvees and shit. We fucked their FOB so bad that they recalled all the dudes in the rest of the box to go back and try and pry us away.

Here's a civilian made version with a walkthrough of how they did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnptcYpuHXs&t=119s

Military suits are same concept, but less bulky because of lighter, expensiver materials and because they aren't as autistic about having such thorough thermal defeat. Functionally, "needing" a suit that masks thermal signature 100% is way overkill.
>>
>>32430820
Random civilian I realize it's just training I just wanted to see OPFOR take a humvee
>>
>>32430880
I didn't see the humvees get taken, or the attack itself for that matter. Just heard the .50s going off. At first I thought it was another retard NDing (I'd already witnessed a Bradley NG multiple blanks). I asked my observer/controller what the deal was and he radio'd his buddy who told it all back to us.

This was my very last exercise in the Army and happened literally less than a month from me starting the exit process from the military. I got kind of ok cautionary tale about socks.
>>
>>32430914
>socks
like feet socks or an acronym for something way out of a knuckle dragger like I's paygrade?
>>
>>32430953
Like feet socks. The cautionary tale about to never act like you're too operator for the basics.

The long story short is that my unit had just come back from deployment and we picked up an E6 who had just come from a unit with a lot of downtime. He was a neverdeployed but thought he was the hottest shit because he had a bunch of Gucci gear (he didn't seem to realize we did too, but we put most of it away during big stupid training with mixed units). So imagine a guy who is decked out in Crye gear, TACOs, whatever packs thinking he's going to go in and show us "how it's done".

We do a full scale training rotation in Louisiana. It is designed to be a start to finish "invasion" of a jungle "island". Everybody is told to pack a week's worth of clothes because "lol there will be laundry service".

Supposed to be 2 weeks in the field, with consistent food and water resupply provided by GRF.

All the teams will be living out of humvees. My team shows up wearing basic bitch gear. I've got an on the ball SPC that had just deployed. He fucking hoards water and MREs on our humvee at main base in Louisiana the week before we transition to being fully "in the field". No less than 10 water cans and 5 MRE boxes. We brought adaptors to run our computers and iPhones (Shhhhh, don't tell nobody I brought a phone) off the humvee battery. Basically we loaded out as if we weren't going to get resupplied.

Same deal with clothes. I and my team loaded out with 2 weeks worth AND I brought provisions to wash those clothes.

Highspeed E6 badass motherfucker packs exactly what's on the packing list for clothes. Brings minimal water and food. More interested in looking like a badass at briefings with his tactical observations.

Anyway, we go into the field and OF COURSE logistics are a total clusterfuck. Food and water resupply is sporadic and unorganized. Laundry service never ever materializes. This was expected by my team.

cont
>>
>>32431050
At the end of the exercise, my scattered unit rejoins. And lo and behold highspeed tacticool E6 is on fucking crutches because his feet are ate the fuck up, and one foot in particular can't even be in a boot for a while. Fucking trenchfoot or whatever you want to call it from multiple days in the same sweaty, swamplogged socks.

All the Crye and LBT gear is the world didn't help him operate because he didn't pack enough socks.

Never think you're above the basic shit.

Get a good assault pack/backpack first.
>>
>>32433244
Got any suggestions? I figured I might have had to change backpacks. It's a shame, I find that single shoulder strap comfortable.
>>
>>32433292
Single strap is garbage if you wanna carry any really weight. If price isn't a problem Eberlestock makes great products. I have a G1 Little brother I use for everyday stuff. I love it. The back support is amazing because the plastic support they put in has a bend in it for your back.

If price is a problem. Never go wrong with a surplus Alice pack. Those fuckers are 40 dollars and You get a nam look and people still use it today in the field because the newer rucksacks army side are garbage.
>>
>>32433292
To expand on why single strap is garbage imagine you wanna put 30 pounds in your pack: Jerky, ammo clothes etc. That in itself is pretty lightweight anyway. Now imagine you put that 30lbs not only on your body for hours at a time but instead of having two straps so the weight is distributed so it's only 15lbs per shoulder you now have 30lbs for one shoulder. Now double it because 50-60lbs is a more realistic combat weight.
>>
>>32433312
I should have mentioned price is a problem. Unfortunately I'm not the best off at the moment. I did find these which is about the maximum price range I'm looking for.

Back to topic of socks, what is a good rule of thumb for packing the right amount? I know activity level and area make a difference.
Pair per day? Two per?
>>
>>32434621
Two per day if in a wet environment. If you are out for extended periods of time (i.e. more than a month) you would want to start figuring out some way to clean the socks, be it with water and airing them out.

Plan two per day, at least. In a military setting this also helps you out because you should assume any mission will last double the amount of time that you are told. This logic should also apply to packing water and batteries.

For washing socks innawoods or in extended field conditions, I've found using a stuff sack works well. Fill it about half full with heated water (heat by fire, jetboil, MRE heater, whatever) and any liquid soap or ground up hard soap you can get if possible. Toss clothes in bag and shake it up real good. Empty and replace with warm water without soap and do again to rinse. Hang to dry.

It is extremely valuable to pack flip flops. This will allow you to move around your base camp area and maximize the time spent airing your feet out and airing you boots out.

Air boots out when possible need fires.

If you have access to decently filtered water and heat, these cleaning methods can keep you acceptably clean essentially indefinitely.

The knife is just in a ghetto DIY sheath. Some folded over cardboard and a bunch of 500mph tape. Looks like shit but is very light and has surprising retention. It's a lighter and smaller solution than the mega huge sheath that comes with the SEALpup knife.

The d-hook on the belt just has a monocle on it, I use it for checking paper at the range. I also usually slap gloves and ear pro on it so all my extras on the belt and I don't forget to bring them. I don't leave all that stuff on the belt when I wear it.

Contrary to previous opinions, I really like my single-strap. Propper Bias. While true that you don't want to load 60 pounds in it, I've hauled 40 with no problem, and as a basic assault bag, that's sufficient for my needs. Note that single sling bags don't put weight on your shoulder. They put weight on your sternum. That's because the sling crosses your chest. But the flaw here is that it can put pressure on your lungs if you're hauling too much.

But having one arm free and being able to access it with a quick tug make it perfect for a lighter backpack.

I've been told not to except any sort of soft shell or hard shell to keep me completely dry in anything worse than a moderate shower, and actual rainwear is required beyond that.

It is expensive but then if you price it out it costs about the same amount as a Mystery Ranch 3DAP. The 3DAP is the gold standard for load carriage, but the HPG setup has a great harness as well and is more flexible (you can detach the Tarahumara and use it as a 1-day assault pack, you can detach the hip belt and use it as a battle belt, you can use the Umlindi as a 2-day pack standalone)

Because the USGI assault packs are actually pretty decent. If you want to be a super spendy guy, go right for a Mystery Ranch Trizip.

I dont use my issued ruck in public ever. Too self concious. I use a 35L civilian hiking pack. Kinda want a cheap alice. Like most the things I say I want or am going to get, I'll not buy it.

>>

Ok, so you want a ruck, but something acceptable in public?

Please don't get an ALICE pack if you're serious about getting something useful. Their design is inferior to most quality hiking packs in almost all ways. ALICE is only good if you have a nostalgia boner.

For practicality, get something internal framed. Again, going to point you at Mystery Ranch stuff. It's spendy, but you'll never need to buy another ruck again. If you get their military line, you can get a coyote colored one, which is acceptable both on and off duty, and you get just enough MOLLE to satisfy your accessory needs.

That's not what he said. They are ugly. Receiver and stock are too tall, too much barrel exposed to the outside. Remember this is an aesthetics not functionality thread.

Wish i could have SCAR controls and internals in an ar
>>
>>32438136
I'm not sure what "SEAL style" is unless you mean putting an IR strobe on top. It's the kind of thing done by a lot of groups.

If you do, IMO, make sure to put a top layer of velcro over it and not just rely on the velcro on top or using tape.

Your picture also shows a use of the releasable NOD strap. Those are actually quite useful if tightening up NOD plates, even ones that are drilled into the helmet. It's not as good as a triangle plate, but it's close.

Aftermarket straps, Ops-Core IMO, are a big improvement. With them you don't even really need a NOD counter weight.

I don't think they're ugly, i think they look great. They look different than an AR, the AR is arguably ugly as well. barrel being exposed can be fixed with mods or shorter barrel, receiver looks like an old school FN FNC sort of, i think it looks good.
If the only knock you have against it that its ugly, then you're grasping at straws.

The are awful. AWFUL!

Bulky, tangly, the little black loop adjustment thing on the back barely works, the pouch placement is awkward, you need a pistol belt for it to sit properly. Garbage.

Get a normie split front chest rig if you really have crawling issues. Tactical Tailor makes a good one. I have firsthand experience with it. It has less space for stuff than a standard chest rig though.

Honestly though, unless you're a sniper or recon guy, a single stack on mags on a plate carrier will allow you to sufficiently crawl for as long as you will practically ever need to. Just don't overload it with layers and layers on the front.

Is there a good solution to carying gear and ammo without them being on a plate carrier or a traditional chest rig?

I tried one of pic related, but couldn't get it to sit comfortably on me.
>>
>>32438353
This. Any Plate Carrier with a kangaroo pouch especially, where the front of the PC with the pouch and mags hardly comes out much more than the front of the PC itself since you're not mounting molle mag taco's on the front and instead basically just sticking mags in a front pocket.

Not a fan of 3+1 loadouts, 6+1 or 6+2 is the minimum for me, but if you really wanna do a lot of crawling and don't wanna get on hands and knees to suspend your torso above the ground then any PC with a kangaroo pouch will just about do it.

(or just use cummerbund mag pouches like a fag)
>>
>>32438376
FLCs work exceptionally as long as they aren't over armor. They only suck when worn with armor.

Get a FLC and adjust it and load out the pouches correctly. You can even make it sit split front by relying on the buckles and not using the zipper.

Still though, not sure why you are so infatuated with a split front. A single stack of mags on a chest rig is quite doable for crawling, even with a plate carrier. Unless you spend 90% of the time crawling, I don't see the point.
>>
>>32438379
Or use a belt. Some belts have buckles to attach them to the bottoms of plate carriers. You can fit all the mags on the sides of a belt snapped to a PC and be good to go.

Or use a belt & suspender combo if not using a PC.

So, so many options. Assuming crawling is the number 1 priority.
>>
>>32438413
Yeah or use a belt lol, I meant more if you're intent to have some sort of "Chest rig" be it an actual chest rig, or anything that is supported by your shoulders and not your waist.

>Or use a belt & suspender combo if not using a PC.
This seems like the #1 best option for maximum comfort and c o m f o r t if you're not being shot at, like going to a range or something.

>Assuming crawling is the number 1 priority.
I get the whole "NeedaHitTheDirt" option, since it's pretty good but like.. Get in shape and learn to plank and crawl low on your knees and arms. You don't actually need to shimmy around on your stomach and if you do, you can deal with having an extra inch of mags on the front of your PC.
>>
>>32438388
>>32438379
Current setup is 3 kangaroo mag pouches on my belly, admin pouch on my left, IFAK on my right, and handgun on my upper chest. It restricted movement a fair amount. I'd rather have something that allows me to move a bit more. My PC makes me feel like i'm in a cast.
>>
>>32438458
Do more drills, exercise more. At a certain point you need to improve, not your gear.

Remember that people do this professionally while wearing far bulkier full armor vest (IOTVs or MTVs) and often with assault packs and all kinds of other shit on. A plate carrier is absolutely nothing in terms of restricting movement.

Pistol holster somewhere to your right, IFAK can stay, mags are fine, move knoife to one side or the other, and that GP bag just put it somewhere not on your chest rig.

>>
>>32439041
What knife is that?
>>
>>32440427
Sometimes the "trainingisms" get a little stupid.

Like, I did WLC at Polk and there was a dismounted patrol exercise where a recently deployed guy was tasked with leading a combat patrol. He was supposed to get to a certain objective point. He was basically prodded down an obvious path by the observer/controller. He was like, "No, going that a path like that is stupid. Obvious ambush or IED area and visibility sucks." He wanted to shadow the path and move through the woods. Every time he tried to make his own path, the O/C shot him down. Finally, he just gave up and took the patrol down the path. And OMG he got ambushed and the squad was wiped out (because half the OPFOR weren't even wearing their MILES gear, so were literally unkillable).

O/C then spent the aftermath doing a lessons-learned talk and pointed out all the "mistakes" the patrol elader had made by going down the obvious path. You know, all the stuff the guy had viciously fought against doing...

And don't even get me started on how retarded the IED training there is.
>>
>>32440983
We always wore our MILES at Hohenfels, and before each STX lane theybwere checked for batteries.

As for lane prodding, it happened but it was less "go down this exact road" and more "you have to approach from this direction" . Funny story, I was the IED triggerman and the Lithuanians bypassed the road. Their bypass led behind me about 15 m from the bushes I was hiding in. Needless to say I was pretty spooked.
>>
>>32441057
WLC was a special kind of stupid. They were prodding him to follow an expected script so they could ding him on expected mistakes. The squad was supposed to get killed, which I suppose is why the MILES gear was so lazy.

I'm glad you actually had triggerable IEDs. As an IED nerd, one of my biggest peeves are lazy magicbox IEDs were it's like a non-functional cellphone duct taped to literally whatever. I hate it because they are "magic" IEDs capable of doing whatever the O/C has it in his head for them to do. Been in a few situations where I was supposed to disarm an IED but it was literally a box with wires and radio duct taped to it. How is somebody supposed to get training value out of that? And then of course all the IED TTPs were hideously out of date and stupid.
>>
>>32441127
*And maybe this old man .mil rambling is off topic, but the rest of /k/ sucks right now. /gq/ is my only safe space.
>>
>>32441127
We were about half and half with trigerrable IEDs. We had some neat ones though, like suitcase bombs with gyroscopes in them that would "detonate" with sharp movement. We had powder filled mines, but when we didnt we had OCs help set up the IEDs and they would throw mortar sims to detonate.
>>
>>32441136
One of my personal favorite IEd stories is when our squad set a few sandbags worth of sim HME in the middle of a road, attached it to a pressure plate, and put a box of Wonder bread on the plate to fuck with the Georgians. They ended up picking up the box, killing half of their element, and a nasty spate of words from the OC.
>>
>>32441164
Good. Stuff like that is the right amount of realistic tricksy without falling into unrealistic "fuck you" territory.

It was shameful seeing IED training where for example the command wire was some thick and obvious as fuck heavy gauge wire with barely any attempt made to conceal it. Trains people to expect IEDs to be that poorly hidden in real life.

And seperate story much later when I was supposed to help support WLC training and got in an argument with their ciriculum for many reasons, to include them classifying an IED containing a wired up aircraft bomb as an "air dropped IED". Just retards taking the most simple and unreasoned reading of their curriculum.

what's everyones opinion on 5.11 utility vests? they seem really underappreciated IMO, they provide a fair amount of storage without looking too flashy, also were they ever used in a theatre of war other than delta in the 90s?

Seriously, please don't do it. You'll just make yourself look and sound incredibly autistic as you try to email/call them. These woodland CryeFires are almost certainly part of a military contract and if they were to sell you a pair, they would be defrauding the government.
