For someone who's not a cosplaying faggot, is there any reason to get a helmet?

I'd like the idea of being able to grab ear pro, eye pro, and a small light in one package in an emergency but other than that I'm really struggling to understand why queers do this
>>
first shitpost
>>
>>32446374
Not really. A helmet is more for vehicle or sustained combat. Yeah you can use it to mount comms or NVGs but that can be outsourced.

No a helmet is NOT that useful as a civ. Some of us just like to spend 600 dollars on useless shit though.
>>
>>32446374
It falls in the "better to have it and not need it than to not have it and need it" category.

What do? Toss the electronic earpro and rock cheap-ass foam plugs like everyone else does?
>>
>>32446374
I do run NODs to hunt hogs, and those stupid skullcapt things shift like no fucking tomorrow. It's a comfortable way to run earpro and nods in one package. Plus I think it looks cool.

Honestly not a huge fan of helmets. Never tried bump helmets but turned off of ACH's from time in the army.

I just like to use a boonie in the spring and summer and german winter cap in the winter and fall.
>>
>>32446389
Does someone make a thinner "cap" rather than a "my mommy doesn't want me to hurt myself" helmet just as a mounting point rather than actual protection?

I pulled over the other day to help someone with car trouble while it was snowing at night and it would've been nice to have one fixed package with a light and something to protect my ears but I can just as easily not help people again than drop all that money on that

Protects the most important part of your body. MICHs and this 6b47 don't cost more than $200, so if you have a plate carrier already it's not that much more money for a just in case sort of thing. Also you can mount NODs, Flashlights, etc on them

Yeah, but bud, the thing is I don't fantasize about doing stupid shit.

I will never, ever, ever purposely put myself in a situation where the probability of me getting shot in the head is so high I need armor for my skull, and it's very difficult to do anything in the dark so I'm not going to drop a grand on night vision just to tell people on /k/ that I did.

You completely missed the context of my post where I asked about the real world and not bathroom selfie faggotry

If you're in combat, and you're using cover, the most exposed part of your body is gonna be your head.

Helmet is as important as body armor.
>>
>>32446601
Most people aren't wearing it for getting shot in the head, it's for not bumping your head on shit. Why do people wear caving helmets? So they don't hit their head. Why do construction workers wear helmets? So they don't hit their head. We just spend a little extra money on the helmets because we think they're cool.
>>

If there's a situation where I'm being shot at I'm going to run the fuck away so I can, you know, not die, instead of hoping I do get shot and will walk away fine like a video game.

I'm not into role playing like you so stop responding

>>32446616
At what point did I ever come close to mentioning thinking it was for stopping bullets.

I usually just wear a ballcap for the most part because it's sunny. I've also got an ACH with a broken suspension (it's too small for me with pads in anyway) and I've got a 6b28 in the mail. I'd love to get a Crye Airframe one of these days, but that'll probably come just before I buy NODs.

What does /k/ think of my helmet?

It's an ordinary ProTec ace wake bump helmet. Original meant as a skate helmet but works just as well to 'military' applications. I originally wanted a ballistic helmet, something like Crye Airframe, but i guess i didn't really see the need for a ballistic helmet in a shtf situation. I mean, if you get shot in the head in you're pretty much fucked anyway, especially if there is no hospital or anything like that available. The price difference between a bump and ballistic helmet also made a huge difference.

I switched out the original helmet strap (which was absolute trash) with a Ops-core x-nape helmet strap, shelled out a fuckton of money for a wilcox L3G10 nvg mount, added some Revision googles, slapped on some velcro for that mall ninja look and finally added what was originally a LED Lenser headlight to the right top front of the helmet and the battery case in the back of the helmet. It's a nice light, with a lot of adjustment options and strobe function as an added bonus.

All in all, it's a lightweight setup which doesn't break you're neck by wearing it for an extended period of time and it has a lot of ventilation holes for those hot summer days. Can also be used for cave exploring and things like that.

Am I weird for liking the IBA?

Downsides are the propriarty soft armor cut, which I can't argue against as a negative. It also has issues over the long term with gear attached directly to it, but since I like standalone LBE on top it doesn't really hurt.

I have one and it has all the bullshit stripped off, no DAPS, collar pieces, side armor (side armor is the worse part of IBA setup, way too saggy). Usually no dickflap attached, but I've got it around.

It's super comfy to open up the front of an IBA at a halt to get short term breathability while still have gear mostly ready.

Not sure if I like it more or less than CIRAS, but it beats the shit out of the IOTV.
>>
>>32447157
IBA isn't the worst but a bit flabby imo. But then again I just hate armor.

>>32447096
Looks interesting. Very retro modern with a 1990s Delta vibe. I assume with all the NOD plate work you put in, that you actually have NODs, in which case you've created an ultralight, stable NOD platform.

The LED is a bit overkill, IMO, but if you're using it for very dark hiking/caving, I may see the appeal.

I would find a way to better secure and flush the helmet strap screws sticking out of the helmet.

>>32447125
Well. It's sold as a bike helmet, but it pretty versatile. It's probably not going to be as good as military bump helmets but they are still used by special forces. Delta also used them heavily during the 90's and early 2000's and SEALs still use them on exercises.

So I just picked up myself a set of MSA Sordins and I can't tell if they're working properly as I have nothing to compare them to.
The sound is slightly muffled and not exactly 1-1, basically have to set them to the highest setting to get a somewhat 1-1 audio experience.
If I am sitting next to a fan and make a loud noise such as clapping or jogging in place, the noise of the fan is slightly muffled out for the moment of the louder sound.

That's how active hearing works. My peltors do the same thing, it muffles all sound when a loud sound happens, so by placebo, you think the louder sound is being amplified while in all actuality itms just a louder sound.
>>
>>32448313
Even when simply running around loudly outside?
Anyways makes sense, thanks.
>>
>>32448395
There's a noise threshold at which the active sound dampening will kick in.

Your earpro actually does a mediocre at best job of muffling any actual sounds below this threshold as you'll notice you can still have full conversations... But any sounds higher than the dB threshold limit speakers in your earpro will produce a counterwave and destructively interfere with the noise and take a lot of the *bang* our of the bang.

if you know anything about armor it should be that every hole you put into somthing you compromise the integrity in some way.Rails are adhesive based or velcro based. Helmet is 100% custom from the factory. any general cut. bolt less boa system etc.
>>
>>32448882
Eh, regular if you dont want to use electronic earpro mounted to your rails but better dome protection from blasts. Thats what I'm sticking to.

>>32448905
Alright well I doubt a tiny fuckhole is going to comp/ integrity when an IED blows off and wood chips everywhere. If it does I'll report back to you on my findings. Till then I'll stick to a regular cut ACH with no holes in it anyways.

I just find the rail mounting system to be too much for what it is. I'm sure they could have made it simpler/smaller no?
>>
>>32448880
It's okay I have the spec sheet right here in the manual, but I was just wondering if it was normal for the ear pro to try and muffle out seemingly low volume actions like claps and running (compared to gun shots).

>>32448928
It might be pitch as well? That would seem weird but maybe it's calibrated for sudden pressure waves as opposed to a threshold so clapping and running and any surface contacting another quickly would set it off in that case.
>>

Yeah I remember. I really should get a system like that myself instead of buying 50 different U94s till I figure out kenwood is what I need. ODST helmets are gonna be as good as we can get for this century anon.rifle rated face protection if gonna be the most difficult becuase it requires being both flexible and capable of absorbing large amounts of energy on a fragile part of the body. a poly carbonate plate sandwiched between 2 panels of soft armor is as light flexible and protective as current technology will allow. It took the lowest profile comms to work with it. and it still not vacuum rated I have no idea how a system could be full seal rated for low pressure and have all of the properties listed above. It's gonna cost alot of R&D and outside the box engineers.
>>
>>32449515
The biggest problem is being able to see through said face protection.

I saw some MIT ballistic engineers working on a way to string high strength metal nano wires or carbon tubes so that visibility isn't impacted but it can stop at least a .223 direct hit. It seemed to work but was
a) incredibly hard to make and expensive
b) still haven't gotten around the "once the round has stopped and the nano tubes release their tension and fly apart, we can't stop them from going into wearers face".

>>32450119
I'm a physicist so forgive me if I make an error but no there are no transparent crystals of Titanium or Iron. chemical modification of Iron or Titanium almost always just re-enforce the crystal structure with carbon or other atoms.

The way they were doing it was by stringing them and creating a net of nano fibers that don't impede sight all that much but can more or less "catch" a bullet.

Sapphire would be amazing because it's hard as fuck and can break up the bullet but then there's no way to stop the fragments.

Diamond would do the same thing, also have really weird lensing effects because of the huge refractive difference.

>>
>>32450213
Idk lol I do Aerosapce related fluid physics stuff.

The concept in theory should be similar to a SAPI plate, break up the bullet and then catch the fragments. The problem is you have ~<1 inch to do it in else your material becomes so thick that lensing is an issue, and you probably have <1Kg to work with for total weight.

The idea was to basically catch the bullet with the nanofibers, and the nanofibers were already stretched a lot to have some insane amount of tension on them and when the bullet hits them they snap off the mountings and release a lot of energy to stop the bullet.

Failing that, use a bleeding edge retinal and internal projection 'holographic' HUD and just put a slab of hard plate over the facia and use external cameras like the chameleon suit from Journeyman 3. Slap a pair of emergency pull handles to undock the whole affair and expose a standard visor if the cams are compromised. Pretty much this. Crye will tell you that they cut their uniforms to be the same overall but each set is pretty damn different so you can end up with one set with a ton of forest green and brown and another set that's mostly olive and tan. I know my AVS is a great example of this.

Is that nigga wearing a RealTree combat shirt?

I guess multicam might work well considering people hid themselves well enough wearing flat olive drab before camo became commonplace. In spring and summer there's a shitload of foliage to hide in anyway, and I feel like multicam would work pretty well for fall and winter.

Should I go with olive, ranger or coyote for my flat colors?

All of my work is custom one offs. But the helmet and mandible are from opscore (gentex) The SLAAP plate is from velocity systems. While the gen 3 silicon carbide flex rifle panels are from stealth armor systems, custom cut (3.33x 8) for my configuration I am using those panels for neck and lower abdomen protection now. they only weigh .80 lbs each. and flex on like ultra stiff IIIA soft armor but stay in that configuration unless force is applied to them. Flex panels make great ancillary armor where flexibility is required.

because it defeats the purpose of having a light high cut helmet when you slap 3 pounds of polycarb to the front of it. And those helmets are made for shrap still even. In a situation where you want ballistic resistance up front, youre gonna want it all around. Zenturio 05s, AMD95s, ZSH1-2ms or an MSA KFS is the best bet.

idk the airframe and that passive cooling tho.

Two 6x8" Level IV ceramic plates for $200, total weight is ~5lbs.
All you need is for someone to make those as a deltoid piece, should be about the same amount of material, and make a carrier for it that attaches to the shoulder straps of common plate carriers. Sell the entire thing for something around $300 and you'll be undercutting Hoplite by $250, almost %50.

If you want to save some weight, drop the rating from Level IV to Level 3+
As long as it stops M193, M855, M80, etc, it should be marketable.
>>
>>32451258
basically the same specs as the dfndr level 3 ++ plate and Hesco 3810 plate. With the best quality control and environmental hardness of the bunch while still being somewhat affordable at 1080 for the set normally.

personnel the weight difference between a plate carrier would even out with the heavier plates. since most plate carriers have 2lbs worth of nylon dead weight, while the minus v2 is 12 oz total. still looking at 12 lbs for carrier with front back side plates and ballistic shoulder pads and abdominal/neck protection.
>>
>>32451384
I mean right now my plates alone are 15 pounds a set, so even 5 pound plates would help honestly, and they'd go nicely in my slick for a very light setup.

The hoplite deltoid only goes out to iii+ all their fancy versions which each have their own unique carrier format are just material differences for weight savings or a mild protection upgrade. >>

Chillin like a crazy man in the mirror with a weirdo mask and not taking shit as seriously as the rest of /k/ makes you a cool dude in my book anon
>>
>>32451569
I've tried a friends memetier nvgs. You're better off using a flashlight.

Either Gen2+ or nothing at all.
>>
>>32451585
nah I just bought it to fuck with people senpai.10$ to trigger GQ's with airsoft memes? you can't put a price on that. Makes it funnier since I've posted it on a GQ before and have never called it out.
>>
>>32451602
damn straight over 350 steps to make those fuckers and they take up to a couple weeks to make on an assembly line. GAAS(man made toxic element) has to be made artificially for them aswell. Overall the tubes are the most expensive part of them.
>>
>>32451614
They're honestly not that expensive for what they are.

I know people who bitch about the price of nice optics and cheap out on them, yet regularly buy 2k+ rifles, keep em for a bit then sell them to buy another 2-3k rifle.
>>
>>32451631
you could say the same thing for helmets and armor...
>>
>>32451578
Ah, c'est la vie, this is just a proof of concept. Hell, i bought straight quarter-inch steel squares just because all it needs to do is prove weight and mobility isn't a complete tradeoff for pauldrons of doom

I'd actually found some of cheaper and more questionable manufacture than condor, but they were sold out
>>
>>32451634
Yep. All the moreso for armor. I'd even argue its necessary as safety equipment if you're doing any training, running and gunning etc with other people.

Paying 70$ for cloth gloves and 200+ for soft-shell jackets is still retarded. The only clothes I overspend on is rain gear and hiking boots.

>>32451593
Hey, if I get serious you either fucked something up, got fucked up, or I'm being led by a decent hardass and led well.

Well, I guess it's dirt cheap so go for it mang.
>>
>>32451859
its a chicom rig man they are dirt cheap by definition. I have bought 15 chicom rigs from amazon sellers and never had a problem. I have seen dozens of anons on /k/ buy them from amazon and never have a problem.
>>
>>32451863
Oh that's kinda cool, then.
I never trusted any chest piece below ~$80 depending on what it was

Weird, you'd think you'd want it cheap as possible...

Are they flimsy or feel like they'll come apart easy or show a lot of wear/thread fringing.
>>
>>32451844foint I'm probably saving up for a Lazutchik or a Smersh rig. Unfortunately due to being a retard my only rifle is an AR, and I wonder about how accessible my mags are gonna be in AK depth pouches. Man I regret that thing sometimes.

they have been used all over the world by almost every nation for decades. Us special operations wore them in vietnam and the invasion of iraq, the soviets wore them in afganistan. every terror group ever issues them.

it's just canvas that's been sewn to hold magazines. i've never seen any of them with the stitching coming out. i have one that i've been using for years and i took paint and a saw blade to, to try and make it look fucked up and couldnt. They are durable as fuck because its simple.

>>32451885
i use mine for Ar mags.
>>
is a plate carrier practical for civilians or am i better off just investing in a belt and mag holders or a chest rig?
>>
>>32451908
depends completely on personal taste. do you want a plate carrier?
>>
>>32451893
You know what? The price is right.
>>
>>32451908
>practical for civilians
The reason they're so popular is that they're practical. They're light, hold a lot of shit, don't restrict movement if you do it right, and are comfy desu

Practical for range shooting? Yeah but depending on the range you might get some weird looks.
Practical for outdoors shooting that isn't gun&gun, no not really.

Depends on what you want. If you just want a place to hold mags that isn't a pocket then a belt or chest rig works just fine and is less expensive.

If you want a plate carrier buy a plate carrier. If you want a belt buy a belt. Hell if you want a place to keep mags on you while shooting cargo shorts do the job just fine.

if you want to spend $400+ on armor plates because you want some level of protection and you want to run around with 20+ lbs on your chest all the time. that's fine. I have a plate carrier and chest rigs and mag holders for my belt.

you really need to decide what you want and what you want it for.

there is no fucking point in buying and wearing a plate carrier if you don't buy armor.

if you wear a plate carrier without armor you are just restricting your movement and increasing your discomfort levels. its just going to be in the way, make you sweaty, make your back hurt, and fuck up your weld to the rifle stock.
>>
>>32451961
Holy shit what kinda plate carrier do you have?
I have plates in mine, but do you really have that much of a problem wearing one?

You really shouldn't be restricted in your movements that much, maybe some people have some issues shouldering a rifle while wearing a carrier, big bois with big shoulders don't tend to but I can understand that gripe since most people aren't that thicc up there.

A plate carrier really shouldn't give you a workout and make you uncomfortable or especially hurt your back while wearing it.
1/6-1/4 of your body weight is the optimum pack weight and shouldn't give you any troubles whatsoever carrying around 1/6-1/4 of your body weight given that you're in decent shape.

Kinda just sounds like you got too much shit on your carrier (Like a ruck sack or full camel back all the time) or just not in good enough shape.
>>
>>32451980
i was speaking mostly in comparison to web gear or a chest rig. a plate carrier is pointless without plates.
