i "Inherited" a bottom of the barrel ATI omni hybrid from a sister whose felon boyfirend inst allow near guns. i didnt trust a 400$ rifle to last long, and it was rusted all to hell on the insides, so i ditched the old BCG for a Nickle-boron-BCG from the local funstore for like 140$. I replaced the barrel for a 1:9 twist, the shitty plastic lower with something more solid and a lighter pull trigger.

I have a Dickbat lower but that's because it was a group buy for laser engraving so I didn't get a choice in the matter. It's a good forged lower though, even if it lacks some of the little minor improvements like an extra flared magwell and tension screw that you see on Mega Arms/Aero lowers (I've got one of each and the magwells are noticeably more opened up). I'll probably build up an SBR on one of those and have a different laser engraving done on the other side too.

On a side note, I've got a DD Omega 9.0 up for sale that came off this rifle. Trying to get $175 shipped for it so I can get contacts before my insurance benefits run out for the year and then order the front sight I've been meaning to replace after I ditched the A2.

What is a good solid AR that doesn't require a tremendous amount of maintenance? I got a Glock 19 and it was simple enough but then I got a Mossberg 500 and I damn near couldn't reassemble it.

I did some research and I've decided 5.56 isn't as bad as it seems. Its biggest weakness is barrier penetration really. It has good accuracy and the terminal ballistics, while different than 7.62x39, are still good.

Rails have always been on the way out. They were a patched on addition to the M-16 platform.

When they were adopted by the AR-15 crowd is when you saw people begin to ontologically reconsider the purpose of the barrel shroud. In the beginning it was Forward Vertical Grips. I think that even originated in the borderline civilian/military areas, it was not pure military.

And now here we are, we have reconsidered the purpose of that area, it no longer is an additional thought, it is central to the very concept of the weapon. It is tapping into the very very old roots of being a complete modular weapon system, and not just playing at it.

There are really only two major changes that need to happen to the platform:

LMT like barrel system, one bolt to swap barrels.

Chamber in 6.5mm. Shit, even just neck up the 5.56 to 6.5 so literally all you have to change is the barrel and spring. 5.56 is a fine round but it is not getting everything it can out of the space restrictions imposed on the AR-15 family.

If you were willing to throw it all away and start from scratch then a slight size up then obviously 6.8 SPC or some variation would be the natural size to gravitate towards.

used the chrono today and tested mk262, cbc77, 70gr tsx, 77gr tmk, and xm193 out of the 10.3 and 14.5

there was zero difference between both guns with and without the can.

the sun was out and the diffuser provided no diffusing so these results may be off a little but it's close to other stuff i've seen and online fps calculators.
