This is the so-called half-moon brake. It's machined out of one solid piece of steel. They were used on very early AK-74s and are highly uncommon.

The two-piece muzzle brake category includes everything else except for the zig-zag. The two piece MBs are made by pressing in a washer to take the place of the front most part of the brake on the inside. The fingernail trimming look around the cuts is what you can identify it by.

Keep in mind all the terminology surrounding these brakes is arbitrary and invented for convenience of discussion.

Traditionally AKs use a wire spring that applies pressure on little notches on the trigger and hammer pins to keep the pins from walking out. Those springs are sons of bitches and make disassembling the FCG an ordeal. Those are called retaining plates and they serve the same purpose but are much easier to remove.

yep, profile round bar, drill through-hole for boolit, drill with flat faced end-mill part-way, run tap in for 24x1.5, flip it around, drill with smaller end-mill to recess the tip area, take over to the mill, mill open area, use indexing/rotary table to locate and drill the random holes.

the other brakes have like a washer welded into it, whereas those brakes have a corner milled out. Slight change in angle the gasses flow through around the brake, should hit the front portion a little bit less.

Probably slightly inferior to the welded washer version, not entirely difficult to make (or fake). For $45 I don't know... Maybe in 30 years it would be worth a bit more?

It was only $35 on ebay so if I end up not caring for it it won't hurt too bad, but so far it stays in place on my belt while jumping around and I'm liking the way it retains the gun in the holster. For a $35 holster I'm liking it quite a bit more than other more expensive holsters I've tried for it.

And with all this talk of muzzle brakes, are there any new brakes the Russians are experimenting with? They've kept the long collar for a decade and a half and I'm curious if they've got anything else they're fooling around with for a new brake.

oil - literally anything will work. corn oil if that's all you've got. run it dry. that will work too.

for the red look about the best you can do if you want to remain as close to original materials as possible is get some amber shellac. it won't look reddish at first but as it ages (a year or three) it starts to take on that red look. all those reddish looking milsurp stocks you see did not start out that color. it comes from the shellac aging.

What would the best AK for a dirty fucking commie like me be?
My budget is healthy as I would rather not have a gun jam when I'm fighting for freedom. I've been thinking of a AK-74 simply for overall effectiveness in an urban environment with little to no heavy military presence for initial engagement. But what brand is what I cannot decide?
