"Retreat" just means to withdraw from the enemy, not necessarily in the direction from which you came. You can retreat to a position you've never been in before. Kind of silly to use it in the context of an entire country rather than a specific place, but not 100% incorrect.

Though I do like the idea of a bunch of German tanks "retreating" into another country and simultaneously invading it.

Advanced theory - the ones with ellipses all suck because the guy was using his own captions, whereas the others are mostly greentexts lifted from threads so the creator was picking the best of a group effort.

This comes from an /ak/ thread but should answer your question.
Also, quoting from memory here, but Anon tracked that particular "Tiger 2" tank out of amusement - and it was incredible.
Captured among other Russian tanks in 1941, pressed into service into the SS. Unit records have it in their rooster right before an attack against a village, no mention of the "battle" involving any enemy materiel, AT guns or tanks; basically a slaughter mission. Yet the tank broke down and was listed as lost after that battle.
Yep. The tank was willing to fight for his new masters, but LITERALLY broke itself when forced to commit war crimes.

TL;DR: Some have.

don't you think, anon? let me tell you something. when soldiers fell on the battlefield by the guns of their foes, only one could help them through and make them victorious: the tank. everyone, no matter where they came from, no matter why they fought for, they left everyhing behind, and gave the last thing they had left to the tank: their lifes. and the tank, in exchange for their trust, gave in everything -even if it meant it's own life- to protect them. and those who fought and had to left behind their only friend, all of them knew, that the tank would never be angry at them. they knew, that the tank did what it wanted: protected them and died for them. and after decades, when the tank still waits, hoping, that one day, -even if this day will never come- it will have to serve why it has been made: to defend the innocents from their enemies. and as the tank fades away to rust and dust, no-one will remember what it did for it's friends, only those, who survived the battle , and they will be thankful to the tank because what it did for them, and they could ride through the never ending sky, together, forever

>d-do you think tanks have a soul?

Souls are earned, not given. You don't have a soul because your god does not exist. However, many people worked to make this tank. They poured their work, their energy, their lives and bodies into these machines. They poured much more into them in an collective effort than was poured into you by your parents. This is the soul of the tank. The people behind it. This why it is hard to look at them like this.
