How do you carry your mags /akg/? I have some chicom carriers and a SADF rig. Does anyone use the surplus mag pouches?

I bought a bunch of NOS East German mag pouches (very cheap) for general storage and transport to and from the range.

I use an AK SMERSH when the situation allows.

I hopped on the WW train when they were 600. It had its first stoppage on me yesterday after about 600 rounds, failure to feed out of the Crapco mag.
I also bought a psak build kit and barreled receiver when they first came out... just have to find a front sight post and dust cover that fit and I'll be able to dump it

Aimpoint PRO, or Trijicon MRO is also great for the money

If you want to cowitness go for either an Aimpoint T1 or T2 (might need to save a little more) or people have good luck with Primary Arms Micro red dots and Bushnell TRS 25s if you'd rather buy a budget dot that isn't that bad. Keep in mind though that every time you remove your gas block to clean you will lose zero with the Ultimak.

You don't need to spend money for a T-series Aimpoint Micro unless you plan to run NODs. The H-1 and H-2 will save you some money and, at least in the case of the H-1 vs the T-1, give you more brightness options too. H-1s can be had for pretty cheap too, at least relatively speaking. I paid $404 for each of my H-1s on clearance earlier this year.

East German four cell mag pouch loaded with four steel Warsaw Pact surplus 30 rounders. Pair of PPS43 dog-collar slings connected end to end then connected to the loops on the back. This is 120 rounds, plus 30 in the mag in the gun. I am not sure how likely I am as a lone actor to find a tactical problem that 150 rounds of 7.62x39mm cannot solve. If I do, secondary is a S&W M&P .40 with two spare mags, totaling 46 rounds, counting the one in the chamber..

$8/50 is for plinking ammo. This is defensive ammo, not plinking ammo.

It seems to be a pretty good performer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBi9t7S0Fpg

It's also a dollar a box cheaper than WWB 9mm 147gr hollowpoints at every Wal-Mart near me, and twelve bucks a box cheaper than WWB .45 hollowpoints at those same stores.

Of course, the Winchester White Box 9mm 147gr hollowpoint is a fairly good performer too:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwqnAcuqgDY

But I forgot, /k/ hates .40.

You might also be interested to know that it's not a real AK-74M, not in the commonly understood sense. It's an older AK-74 that has been retrofit with an AK-74M folding stock and hardware. That one in particular is actually a fairly old AK-74.

Looking closer at it, I notice that the barrel components and how they're attached to the barrel are different than those on a 74M. Is that one of the tell tale signs of that?

>>32139884
Yes, but it's not only the lack of dimples, but also the fact that the FSB is completely different than what has been used on new-mfn 74Ms since the beginning. Also, the gas tube retainer lever is completely different than what has been used since early 1988. It is the milled version when the stamped version (current version) has been used since the start of 1988.

Check your serial prefix, 54=2014, 55=2015 and so on.

If it's 2015 or later it has the restrictor.

If it's 2014 it may or may not have it. AC rifles do not, but most of the other prefixes seem to have them. Mines a 54 BE and I can't tell. I can stick a paper clip through into the barrel but isn't proof either way.

1/2

I think it's more a phenomenon of the post-2010 or thereabouts great increase in interest in AKs in the US. There were various reasons for this--guys coming back from the sandbox who were impressed with OPFOR's tools, various politicians threatening to ban them, etc. Anyway, this has created tremendous demand for AK rifles in the US.

WASRs are more than decent and still out there, but Cugir is a small manufacturer, and they're selling stuff to other parts of the world too, which is in flames right now--war in Ukraine, war in Syria, and on and on and on--which has increased demand for their products worldwide. Same goes for Arsenal in Bulgaria, same goes for Izhevsk, and so on. The Chinese used to sell fairly decent AKs to the US but import is now blocked.

So there is a market vacuum, which spendy imported parts kits lacking barrels cannot begin to fill. Enter manufacturers like IO, DDI, and even Century, rushing to market to cash in on the interest with products of... let us say, doubtful and uncertain quality at best.

I don't know how it is cheaper to use an expensive, borderline-exotic material like aircraft aluminum alloy to crank out acceptable and usable AR15 clones than to make AKM clones out of stamped sheet metal, but that seems to be where the market is headed.

Someone in the US just might crack the AK Mystery Code and figure out the proper alloy and heat treatment for critical parts like the front trunion, the extractor, and so on--if they think people care about it. Right now the market is flooded with shittastic overgassed AKs with garbage cast-iron trunions and extractors, and so on, that seem fine until they stop extracting fired cases (best case) or the too-soft trunion and bolt stretch and deform and peen in use until headspace exceeds safe limits and the gun goes KA-FUCKING-BOOM in someone's hands.

A gun shop with attached indoor range near me is still selling IO AK clones, despite three (3) so far going ka-BOOM on their attached range in front of witnesses since this spring, because they can't get WASRs or Arsenals for love or money right now.

The demand for anything vaguely Kalashnikov-shaped is so great that people are buying Century RAS and IOs and rolling the dice because the distributors and the local gun shops just plain can't get anything better right now.

Entirely dependent on what you want out of a rifle: be it a rifle that had a one time flaw on a handful of guns at most, a rifle that has been perpetually shitty and is now overpriced, or a gun with a shitty finish, the same quality control problems as the shitty gun but without a manufacturer that's willing to pick up the phone when called. :^)

With how finicky the American forum orientated AK market is, DDI took some huge risks. Modern materials analysis, literally just copying a 60 year old design, I thought he might have a chance, but this is looking bad.

The learning curve, tooling and jigs, potential price pressure from kvar, Dave has a lot on his plate and for what? I just don't get it. Rifle dynamics has its niche, desert tech is actually inventing something, DDIs model is crazy IMO. I mean at least desert tech could pitch their rifle to military/Leo, hold patents, maintain control of their margin.

Depends on what you want the gun for. I'm still glad I paid $700 for my DDI over $1100 for an Arsenal with the only advantage being the side folding stock. Would I like a side folder? Yes, but I'm not going to pay $400 for something that would've been aesthetic only as I would've thrown an optic on right away.

Also as far as the term is used in my local area, a brick is the largest single-box round count for a type of ammo, so basically anywhere that sells bulk 5.45 should have it in bricks/crates/tins/whatever.

The CHF and side folding stock are the only two things there that have any benefit and even then they wouldn't benefit me, so why would I pay extra? Factory Bulgy builds seem to be pretty terrible when it comes to QC with canted sights and all that shit as compared to my DDI which came out of the box with everything properly placed and aligned. My DDI has several thousand rounds through it without a single issue, so where are my "functionality issues"? You've yet to explain how it is realistically better than my AK. CHF is the only without-a-doubt benefit but even then it's not necessarily a realistic one because AKs are not group-shooting rifles to begin with.

I'm sure the question has been asked and answered before, but why can't Americans make a soils fuckin production ak. I know that there have been failures in the AR market just because what's the way of the world, but is it just more noticeable with the ak community because of how small it is? This is in contrast to the ar market where they'll get drowned ot because of the number of quality options and the overall size.

It's not Americans in general so much as the relatively small outfits which are attempting this problem. Making a large volume of firearms isn't easy and it doesn't help that they are stamped (look into the history of how Russia and other countries struggled with it). I'd chalk up most of the failures we've seen to logistical problems. If everything was produced in-house with adequate QC there's no reason it wouldn't work out, but setting up the tooling and production lines is a major operation. Even the US doesn't seek a domestically produced solution when they want to arm foreign allies. It's either surplus or contracted through a firm such as Arsenal (as they have done with Iraqi military in the past).
>>
>>32143930
Real talk, IF they fix their problems with things like extractors (and an East German surplus extractor is a $15 part), I like the configurations they're offering. The triangle folder + gas block front sight rifles, in particular, give me an irrational gunboner out of all proportion to anything I actually need and would especially love one in 5.45. IF. If they get their shit together and make them right. I'm imagining one with the barrel cut down to 14.5" or so and a flash suppressor pinned and welded on to bring overall length up to 16", to fit in a tennis racket case.

Do you have any idea what the history of .40 S&W is?
It's a direct descendant of the nerfed 10MM FBI loads which were made because women and weaker men couldn't handle them. They shortened the case as these weaker loads didn't need the volume and then called it a day.

.40 S&W is a disgrace, and the kind of result you get when you have design by committee on top of bureaucracy and inclusiveness while trying to meet an unrealistic requirement.

If you have to own a firearm chambered in that round, I hope it's a USP. More for you, I guess.

Actually .40 caliber is a direct descendant of the old Centimeter cartridge developed back in the 1970s by Whit Collins and Jeff Cooper, as an attempt to make a cartridge whose caliber began with "4" that was compact enough to fit in existing 9mm platforms of the day, that would improve significantly on 9mm terminal ballistics. The 10mm is a lengthened Centimeter. The .40 is also slightly longer than the original Centimeter, having been designed to use short-ogive bullets of truncated cone geometry, which was felt back in the 1980s to be conducive to more efficient and reliable expansion in hollowpoint bullets.

But thanks for playing. Here's your consolation prize: a wall of dicks for you to climb. Your mom's at the top.

Haven't really started messing around at the gym or doing proper lifting. My routine is based on things I can do without equipment.
mostly for core:
>10x crunches (add weights if desired)
>30s side plank left
>10 push-ups
>30s side plank right
>repeat from the top
Idea was from scooby.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOvo2PDmL0E

I do chin ups on my shower curtain rod in the morning and at night as well. It's screwed into studs and supports my weight with ease.
>>
>>32146392
You have a kickass shower curtain rod if you can do pull-ups off it. Also you'll get much faster results in a gym with weights instead of just doing calisthenics.

Post 2008 WASR 10

There are a few variants in the price range that are just as good but the WASR is the most common and the closest to an actual AKM barring the dimples.

Find a WASR 10 in your area, either in a shop or on armslist and inspect it

Check for Rust, make sure the barrel isn't shot out and make sure the gas block and front sight base are not massively canted.

Century has a long record of being hit or miss on their imports

They have improved quite a bit at least on their WASRs since 2008

I am hearing much of the same hit or miss reputation that century is known for with their 100% US made AK line

>>32147689
James Yeager has supposedly blown up two of them in his classes

AKOUs RAS lost proper headspacing after 5,000 rounds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs7eK2SmGYM

Some people however claim theirs are fine.

So again, Century products for the most part are hit or miss and it seems their US made AK line is a miss with hard use.

In the current market I'm going to say yes.

700 is pretty much the going rate right now, they may come down again after market saturation post Trump inauguration and once the Syrian conflict settles down and they start coming back into the country again but I don't see them going back down to 500 and who knows how long it's going to take for them to start coming in again

I would check your local private market and if you don't see any better deals go for it.

Thinking about installing a retaining plate and non-slotted safety on my Yugo.

1) Red Star Arms, Krebs, or Tapco? From what I've heard RSA is drop in while Tapco needs fitting and the Krebs is twice as much as the RSA while looking identical.

2) Can Yugos use a standard AK safety selector? I know some parts interchange just fine between M70s and AKMs but I can't really find reliable information on whether or not a standard selector will fit an M70, and surplus M70 selectors are MIA everywhere I look. I hate the way the notched safety looks.
