If you just want something for self-defense get something like a Glock 21, XD 45, or 1911 if you want something in .45 or a Glock 19, XD9, or Berreta M9 if you'd like a 9mm. These are just what I personally like, and there are tons of people who will agree or disagree. The best thing you can do is research what's good, go to a range try out different weapons and find what you like the best.
