So should I be smart and seek out a nice economical bolt action .22LR as my first gun? Or should I do the Canadian thing and get an SKS right off the hop? (I've fired one before, so it won't trigger any literal shaking).

Also I've heard that SKS can sometimes malfunction and slam fire the entire magazine through with one trigger pull. And I've heard that it happens if you use non milsurp ammo? Is this true? Does an SKS mean I have to buy crate ammo for the rest of my life?

the slamfire isn't a regular thing
this only happened a couple times to complete morons who didn't clean their rifles properly and then blamed the rifles and nearly got them banned

basically SKS has a free-floating pin like say VZ does. that alone is not the issue. the issue is that most SKS come caked in literally decades old cosmoline -- thorough removal of which is basically Canadian right of passage, but is also necessary. on metal parts you can use mineral spirits, brake cleaner, lots of heat and elbow grease, etc. if you do not remove the cosmo from the firing pin channel in particular and make sure your pin rattles freely, you can have the issue where the pin gets stuck in the forward position, which of course leads to firing off a round the moment the bolt closes over and over. you have to get rid of all the cosmoline initially and then make sure you regularly clean and maintain your rifle to the firing pin channel isn't gummed up due to neglect -- do that and you will never have a slamfire regardless of ammunition

TL;DR: rifle is fine! get it, clean it, love it
>>
>>32112360
SKS would be my recommendation, unless you can afford a VZ58, because those are the tits.
As for the SKS malfunction, it's not because of ammo, but because people don't clean it. Gunk builds up in the firing pin channel, and prevents the firing pin from returning to it's standard resting position, so when the bolt moves the next round into the chamber, the firing pin can strike the primer setting it off. Just make sure to clean the firing pin channel with a toothpick when you first get it, if you don't want to completely disassemble the bolt.

>>

Any ammo is OK as long as you aren't dumb. Just make sure to clean it when you need too. Corrosive means a cleaning after every shoot, non-corrosive means clean it more or less whenever you feel like, but make sure it doesn't get filthy.

Not necessarily, if you have a good enough clp like g96 you can spray everything down, barrel gas tube(just spray into the vent hole on the side of the tube), and the bolt, and your good for a couple days or even weeks depending on humidity, for example, pic related is a before shot of my sks bolt, haven't cleaned it in weeks and i only use corrosive, next post will be an after shot.

Importing from most of the world is relatively easy, though you'll have to do a fair bit of paperwork and it will cost some money. The USA is much trickier, because of their export laws. It'll add about $300 or so to the price tag if you buy from the USA. Valmets aren't really worth it IMO, lots of trouble to get an AK when we have cheaper and better alternatives. It's mostly just if you really really want an AK.

yup you're good, a lot of people in this country hunt with commercial primer, brass-cased soft-point ammo in their SKS with no issues

otherwise what >>32112461 said, clean your rifle, if you use corrosive, take the extra step of getting salts out.

generally, 90% of the ammo you'll be buying will be steel-cased milspec shit anyway, either spam cans of corrosive surplus or newly manufactured bulk like Barnaul
>same type of case, round and powder, produced at the same slav factories in the exact same way, with the only difference being a different chemical in the primer that doesn't produce salts when fired off
as far as 7.62x39 is concerned as a round, fired out of an SKS, there is no reason to buy "premium" commercial ammo anyway, not that you'll have a problem with it if you do

Or just use good CLPs and shit. You dont have to go boiling water and shit to get the salts out, you dont even need to get them out, just prevent it from rusting by using a clp like G96 gun treatment, g96 nitro solvent works just fine to completely remove the salts, so does kerosene, gas, some mystery liquid i found on our solvent shelf, but the last couple make your gun have a heavy chemical smell so i wouldnt reccomend it unless you have nothing else
>>
>>32112768

Nice collection man. Are there lots of options to modify your SKS?
>>
>>32112799
Yeah, I used to have a Strikeforce ATI stock on it, until someone yelled "CYKA BLYAT rifle is fine", then I took it off but kept the mags and rail/scope. I destroyed the gas tube wood on it, so I got a vented gas tube instead.
>>
>>32112716
Oh so it's corrosive as in salty corrosive not as in acidic corrosive?
>>
>>32112799
Tons of them. I don't recommend them of course, because rifle is fine, but if you really want you can change about 80% of it. Why you'd spend the money on a $230 rifle is beyond me, but it's your money.
>>32112817
Technically the issue is that the "corrosive" primers leave bits of chemicals in the action and barrel that attract water and hold it against the metal. This results in the metal rusting far quicker than it would under normal circumstances. There is no acid involved.
>>
>>32112812

>>32112854
Don't underestimate it. If you live in a humid area, it will still wreck your gun within a couple days if left untreated. CLP can slow it down, but it'll still happen eventually, you should be cleaning it.
>>
>>32112817
yeah the old school primers leave chemicals in the barrel after being fired off, that are, for all intents and purposes, salts. the residue itself isn't armful, but as all salts tend to do, they attract moisture from the air, and gather and hold water particles on your precious metals, which of course is the opposite of what you want.

this is the reason the simplest method of cleaning after shooting corrosive is the extra step of pouring boiling water down the bore/gas tube, to literally wash out the salts, before drying off and then doing standard cleaning and oiling
>you don't have to do that way. as earth dweller here pointed out >>32112511 with all the modern cleaners available, putting a kettle on isn't necessary, but people have been doing it that way for generations and as long as you dry your shit off before oiling it up, you'll be fine

Whatever you dont listen to anyone at cabelas, no one there knows anything about guns, last time i was there, besides instant ptsd upon entering the store, i overheard an employee in the gun library telling someone an sks isnt very good and it chambered in 308, i should have said something but i was already in shock from the POPOPOPOPOPOP and rack of realtree mossberg 22s held together with phillips head screws

>>32112941
Yeah there's some grinding and shit to fit mags, but not every SKS can fit them. It's luck.
>>
>>32112941
You might need to do some sanding

Speaking as someone who is in the middle of putting a tapco stock on, don't do it. It's such a pain
>Replace gas tube guard with the new one
>Go to put it on rifle, it doesn't fit
>Sand the little black tabs on the bottom, it fits now
>Replace stock, go to put trigger on
>Spring included with it for the stock is 3x as long for a hole that's the same depth as the wood stock
>Put trigger on rifle finally, now the safety won't disengage
>Put wood stock back on rifle, safety disengages fine
It's getting annoying. I should have listened to the RIFLE IS FINE people

Try and get one thats blued or parkerized, lots of them have a painted finish some people call BBQ paint, itll strip right the first time you clean your gun if your not careful, my friend got had and sks with that finish and it was painted over rust

just to clear something up, when people say
>check for good bore condition
what they mean is, bring a little pocket flashlight, shine it from the chamber end and look down the muzzle, try to focus your eye on parts all the way down the bore, check for what might look like pitting, check the rifling (are the grooves looking very pronounced, nice and sharp or are they barely visible? are they even?)
like Moleman pointed out, get one after 1950s that has chrome lining, nice mirrory shine inside the bore is always good. also check the chamber end as much as you can. remember that dried up crusty cosmoline residue can look like rust, so don't panic and take your time examining shit.

Last but not least, don't forget this is a semi-auto rifle, which means THERE IS A HOLE IN THE BARREL where the gas tube is attached
>I swear, if I had a dollar for every time someone online panicked about "OMG you guys, just noticed this big black spot down the bore!!!!" lol

check chamber, action and mag and make sure rifle is unloaded. point rifle in safe direction and check it by dry firing:
>cycle the action, pull the trigger: does it work/clearly feelit drip the hammer? is it a nice clean break? does it feel gritty and uneven on the pull or is it fairly smooth? does it feel strangely way too easy to pull or abnormally hard? (remember SKS has pretty heavy trigger pull by modern standards, but that's normal)
>cycle the action, pull the trigger and keep the trigger depressed, cycle the action again and let go of the trigger slowly: can you feel/hear a clear reset? if you pull the trigger again, does it function?
>repeat the same process but put the safety on, try the trigger: does the safety work of can you still pull the trigger and drop the hammer?
>>
>>32113091
>forgot the firing pin
just needs to rattle freely in the bolt, you probably won't be able to disassemble the rifle and rattle the bolt, but you can angle it muzzle down with open action and feel with your finger if gravity pops the pin out

otherwise, is it smooth, rounded and even or is it jagged, broken off somehow?
>really not something that happens often and is likely
if the pin isn't free foaling, it's almost certain due to cosmogunk and will be fine after cleaning, if the pin is damaged, it's like a $10 replacement part -- serious issues with firing pin are highly unlikely as all of the slav SKS in Canada are Grade A rearsenalled surplus and 99% of the Chinese SKS are unissued military SKS from 60s/70s (basically unfired brand new shit from storage that Chinese made for themselves and never used, not the shittier commercial-made Norinco that Americans have floating around)

I'm SO done with the Canadian firearms "scene". It's a joke. The people involved are mostly low-quality. The Conservatives had two terms including a majority government to give Canadian gun owners a break and all they did was get rid of the Long Gun Registry which was useless and had a minimal impact on gun owners anyway.

Like everything else in this corrupt shithole, none of players -- from gun organizations to range owners to retailers -- gives a shit about gun owner's rights as long as they have thier slice of the pie and/or seat at the table.

Gun owners themselves are mostly rural pension/welfare fudds who would be happy see the sport shooters have all their guns taken away as long as no one touches thier shotguns and bolt rifles.

The only option for suburban Canadians (ie, those that actually work for a living) are nasty, militant gun ranges run by power-tripping losers who think having a gun is an amazing privleage for elites when in reality they are just mostly trash.

Retailers do insane price gouging. And the low-quality people on forums of course support it along with fanatical police support because of a general sick desire to identify with police as gun owners...makes me throw up thinking about it.

Seriously the gun scene in Canada is pure garbage, avoid.

I can only speak for small town NL here, but I bought an SKS and crate at Canadian Tire, and saw that they have 7.62x39 soft points for sale there. It's also just above the energy limit for hunting big game so if I felt sadistic I could hunt moose with it. The point I'm making here is that there ARE options for new factory 7.62x39, and you can own an SKS without ever firing surplus ammo through it if you want.

The slamfire issue is due to the firing pin sticking in the forward position. This happens if the firing pin channel is not fully cleaned of cosmoline. The best way around this is to simply purchase a rifle that has been cleaned already, but if you're really paranoid about it you can get a spring-loaded firing pin online that will ensure that it never happens.

The upsides of the SKS, in my mind, are that it has low recoil, cheap ammo, and a bit of history. Not much, but I still think it's nice to see a design that's basically straight out of WW2 USSR.
The ammo isn't as heavy as full sized rounds but it's still hella heavier than .22 cal.
A .22 also makes for a lighter rifle.
Something else to keep in mind, the SKS would probably be around $1000 new from the factory, so you're getting a great value.

The downsides. It is loud. much louder than a .22, which also has options for factory subsonic ammo.
It is definitely not small or light.
You may not like using clips, and removable magazines aren't exactly click-and-go.

I don't give a shit about magazines because of our excellent laws, so I bought a Mare's Leg to go with my SKS. Now all I need is a shotgun and I can tape them all together and have the perfect weapon.
>>
>>32113764
Suck my dick cuckandian loser.
There's some minor licensing firearms dealers have to go through. Their operations aren't much different from American retailers. The difference is that the gun retailer space is highly protected and American gun export hassle closes off US exports so they gouge the FUCK out of thier customers. Plain and simple.

Have heard good thing about c-products lar -15 mags. May or may not need filing.

Standard stanags like e-lander work no problem, stay away from plastic mags. Some might work with filing some won't.

T97s are funny in that each gun is different. Some will run with no problems ever, like a beast. Some will be plagued with problems. Each one will love and hate certain mags, not just if it will fit. If you get one to fit it may be failure to feeds, ftf's everywhere.

For what it's worth I've never had a problem.

It's not hard. It doesn't have to be perfect.

I regularly post about my SKS and shit (like half the niggas here do too)
I just put in an order for a Mossberg MVP Varmint .223, from Cabelas. My question is if this rifle can take 5.56, its just an afterthought of course.

Can anyone really explain the difference between .223 and 5.56? I know the externals are the same, but the rounds are pressured differently and the the internals of the round are also different. I might post pics of it when I get it.

I also want to know what ammo would be good for this rifle. I am looking at 55g and 62gr. I also wanted to know where I might be able to get some bulk ammo. I just dont want to get ripped off on any website.

62gr should have a bit more kinetic energy to it right, but won't fly as fast. 55gr will have less kinetic energy, but will fly faster. I know these are not reloadable, and I also want to know which fly the flattest.

Is this http://www.bulkammo.com/rifle/bulk-.223-ammo a good, reliable place? Or should I try out http://www.luckygunner.com/rifle/223-remington-ammo I dont want to be burned trying to buy some ammo. If you want more info just reply to me or yell out faggot from your closest mountain top

>Mossberg MVP Varmint
According to the Mossberg website, it's chambered for 5.56 and .223

http://www.mossberg.com/category/series/mvp-series/mvp-varmint-predator/

Tests show that if you fire 5.56 in a .223 chamber you can get increased pressures, especially if the chamber is tight.

As for the two places you listed, I'm pretty sure they don't ship to Canada. Try ammosupply.ca or Canadaammo instead.

They aren't lying to you, Sellier and Bellot packages Czech military surplus and stamps their name on it. They do it with x54r also, I bought a big case of it this past summer at my LGS, all they did was put it in white boxes on 20 round holders, the actual ammunition comes from large military warehouses.

I am curious, how has people's experience been with Czech x39 ammo? I heard a fair while ago it was the most problematic of the milsurp ammos, but my x54r works and shoots great. Just wondering if what I read was written by jackasses.

>>32113357
If the Gen 4 I used to own is any indication, you're going to love it. Mine wasn't perfect but it was at least 95% if you consider the rounds I fired through it in total. I sold it to get a little extra money while getting something for cheap I could throw a flash light on easily, and while I think it was for the best I miss that gun, it was incredibly fun and useful. Also something I never even considered was that UTS' are the same length as those Norinco 12'' barreled coach guns, just a lot fatter.

To answer your question I picked up a mag fed 18.5'' Grizzly with two metal factory mags for the same as regular price from CanAm. I always wanted to try one of those things so we'll see how it goes, it was shipped yesterday.

Very interesting! I actually haven't shot any surplus out of my numbers matching SKS because Barnaul FMJ's are cheap and plentiful in my general area so for the amount of shooting I do when I take it out I just shoot those. I was just curious if the stories were bullshit, which they are.

I can find ammo for it easily at any gun store, but don't expect to find it at Canadian Tire or Walmart or some other store that "sells" guns and ammo but not really.
Pretty easy to clean, use a bullet to push in the little button on the end of the barrel, spin the front of the barrel around, pull it off, pull out recoil spring, use the magazine to push the little metal clip thing off the side, pull out retaining pin/slide catch, pull off slide, field strip complete.

There's the Atlantic Marksmen Association range in Dartmouth, but you can pretty much only shoot handguns there, and only at a certain time during the week. I've found that you need to drive at least an hour to get to a range, with the exception of one that was only 35 minutes away from me.

5.56 and .223 are basically dimensionally identical, but 5.56 is higher pressure

5.56 designed guns can easily shoot .223 since it's just a lower pressure version of the same round.

.223 designed guns might not be able to handle the higher pressure of 5.56

Hey folks,

I've been eyeing the Bersa Thunder 380cc for a while.

Really want one. I like it's compact size, but I recently learned that:

"According to the Criminal Code, a prohibited firearm is: a handgun that has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length."

This model has an 81 mm barrel.

Is there anything else I should know? Or is this gun just fully and totally illegal, even for those with their Restricted license.

Pic related.

God bless Canada.

Right, forgot you said it was closed. I guess I've got a 3 second memory.

Sibley's not bad, but it's rather basic. Just a couple benches at a 100yd range.

As for Bull Meadows, they mainly deal with the Nova Scotia Rifle Association. You'll want to join them if you want to shoot there.

I've been thinking of just joining the Middle Musquodoboit Rifle and Revolver Club, since they're open all year round (I believe), plus they have multiple ranges, the longest of which is 300m
