What are the best options if I want a marksmanship oriented AK? (Note: I know AR15 is better for this, already got one.) I've seen discussion of so called 'precision' AKs before. What sort of barrel length, caliber, optics, manufacturer, etc? What sort of effective range could I expect to get?

Not that relevant if 7.62x39 since it burns efficient. I would assume 5.45 is the way to go. Unless we are throwing 54r in the mix.

Cheapest AK that isnt shitty IO? Been looking at either a draco on atlantic or an AMD63 on classic, but I don't like the look of the 63.

Sold my wasr last year for 800 and now i want another AK, why the fuck are WASRs as pricy as DDI now?

Looking at a budget of 600 shipped.

Didn't get an answer last thread.
>>
>>32046106
WASR is pretty much as cheap as you can go for reliability. You can roll the dice on a PSAK-47 if you'd like since AKOU got one to pass the 5K test, but the AK market has gotten way more expensive in the last couple of years due to a change in focus to military contracts for most companies. You can thank Obama, the Russians, and Jihad Joe for that.
>>

Did you know Century's WASRs are shit? Proof:

>>
>>32046106
AMD's have butter soft barrels that shoot out in like 2 mags.
WASR or anything else built on an imported parts kit is your best bet for a budget AK. Stay away from anything US made other than maybe PSA's AK.
Watch the AKfiles, ARFcom, and slickguns for deals. And don't be scared of 1 off or home builds. I find people often put more effort into them than whoever assembles WASR's in bumfuckistan for less then minimum wage.

Prices are dropping like a rock since trump won. Never been a better time to buy buy buy.

I've been legitimately toying with the idea of picking up a krink sometime over the next few months (well, applying for a cuck stamp to get it all started in the next few months).

I'm on the fence if I'd rather pick up a Russian kit and have it built or just pick up a SLR104UR and have it cut down. A kit would be more neat with it being original Russian military but the SLR would be cheaper (~$1200 for the rifle + $200 stamp + however much it'll cost someone to cut and recrown) and seemingly the better buy for the money considering it's new production.

I don't know. I really want one but it'll be my first step into NFA and that alone is it's own deal.
>>
Alright I've been looking for reasonably priced parts kits for quite sometime and this is the only thing in stock that's not outrageously expensive.

The handguards would be more or less proper for an AKM, to the best of my knowledge, but the existing WASR buttstock is more proper for an AKM. Those lightening slots in the sides of the '74 buttstock were to make it immediately visually distinguishable from an AKM during the period when armories had both on the racks (I suspect this is also one reason for the great big AK74 brake). It will probably fit or be fit-able but it will set off my autisms. reeeeeeeeee, etc.

How well does it reduce recoil and muzzle rise, and does it reduce your split times? I will guess it's probably better than a slant brake, but then I personally can't feel any difference between a slant brake and a bare muzzle.

>>32046851
>hose lightening slots in the sides of the '74 buttstock were to make it immediately visually distinguishable from an AKM during the period when armories had both on the racks
No they weren't. They were to make the stock lighter. Hence, "lightening cuts."

Also the muzzle brake was unique to the -74, and the 90 degree gas block was introduced early on in the -74's life for reliability reasons.

Of course all of that pales in comparison to the fact that the mags aren't interchangeable at all...

I do not own an AK but a family member does and I love the platform, I'm currently /noguns/ because /poorstudent/ but I'm saving for my first big purchase.

Would /akg/ recommend a Molot VEPR? Or what would be a good AK-based alternative? ~$800 is my ideal budget.

That's awesome. My Legion order with the RPK mag is piggybacking 4 plums for a friend. Last time I ordered plums from Legion they were beat to shit but didn't have anything interesting on them; if these do I might offer to trade one of my NOS plums from AIM just to get something more interesting.
>>
>>32046870
>How well does it reduce recoil and muzzle rise
I went from muzzle nut to slant to Fighter in about a month, and I was shooting every weekend with the slant brake.

I noticed a big difference between nut and slant, but I noticed a hell of a difference between Fighter and Slant.

I don't know about split time and I don't think it does much for recoil but it definitely controls muzzle rise.

The last time I shot, I was pegging clays at 50 yards in fairly quick succession.

Well, if you feel like rolling the dice, Legion still has a bunch of plums for like $27.95 each plus $10 shipping. Might have trench art, probably won't have metal band carvings though. A guy on the Files also just put an ad up for similarly-cheap plums, but with a lower price for shipping on smaller quantities.

ags used to have some hungarian parts ddis like that but I'm pretty sure those are dried up now.

...so, anyone here rattlecan an AK?

I cleaned the exterior of the metal with carburetor cleaner, old toothbrushes, and paper towels then used Rustoleum matte black high-temp BBQ paint on the exterior of the barrel and the gas block, front sight base, flash suppressor, and gas cylinder, because the rifle was a WASR and it was parkerized but the parkerizing was thin and splotchy and scratched-up right out of the box. Even after two weeks of drying the paint was soft and crumbly and could be scratched off easily with a fingernail. But then I went to a range and dumped a couple hundred rounds through it in half an hour and got it hot enough that smoke was coming out from under the handguards and cosmolene was melting and weeping out of the front sight base around the barrel. When I got the rifle home and let it cool down, the paint was nice and hard and tough.

I also decided to do a camouflage paint job on the furniture. The base color was 6-8 coats of Rustoleum satin "Dark Taupe," which is a very close match for the currently popular flat dark earth/coyote brown color. Then I got some of the Krylon camo colors and a homemade stencil with leaf and branch shapes, and used that to apply some "dark earth brown" and "dark olive drab." Then the furniture got about a dozen coats of matte clearcoat, and a final scrub with a green nylon scrubber to get a really nice nonreflective matte finish.

The final result looks kind of like ass but it's starting to grow on me.

That being said, my psl clanks my 400 yard steel pretty easy and gets around 1in with russian factory 188 surplus. Once you get optics on the vepr54r, you're not so far off in price from a psl + 4x scope. I personally think military rifles are far more desirable than sporters, but the vepr will treat you well if you don't care about that.

I'd put the psl before the vepr54r personally, 10rd mags and having a legit military gun so you can drool and get the weird pride of owning one whenever you watch middle-eastern shows and movies.
It doesn't shoot any worse from my experience, maybe it would do some of that stuff it's rumored to do if I magdumped and really got the barrel hot before trying to shoot paper? That doesn't sound smart to do before shooting paper with any gun though. Barrel should be cool-ish first.

Yup. The piston chrome plating has chipped of partially too. I have no idea about how many rounds I have shot through it but something in the range of 5-10k.

First post for my 5.45 DDI Bulgy parts kit build. No explosions or cracked extractors so far.
>>
So I'm watching a documentary on Netflix called The Ivory Game, and it's about the poaching of elephants in Africa. I'm only 10 minutes in and one of the anti-poaching groups in Kenya have guys armed with well worn AK74s (I guess they could be 5.56 but I'm not aware of any AK101s in Africa and the magazines had more of a 5.45 curvature than the more straight 5.56 magazine). I had no idea there were AK74s in Africa. How could they have gotten there? I'm not aware of any ever being sold to African nations and I have no idea if they are ever sold to individual independent organizations or paramilitary groups in Africa.

Anyone have any info on this?
>>
>>32052221

Their AKs made with combloc parts are perfectly fine.
>>
>>32046868

The NEW rifle uses a shitty American made everything. The OLD rifle and their kit built rifles still uses Hungarian or Polish parts that work just fine because they're made correctly.

Just the like the DDI-12, DDI is trying to "improve" the design and failing miserably. Stick to their parts kit builds which are great, any American made AK is always going to be shit.
>>
>>32052344
>Just the like the DDI-12, DDI is trying to "improve" the design and failing miserably.

I don't think they had anything to do with the design or manufacture of those. They just imported the guns from china and put their name on them.

>>
>>32052411
Not him, but 74s are substantially scarcer in comparison to AKMs though. AKMs were manufactured by everybody and sold to everybody, while 74s were only manufactured by a handful of countries, and even then it isn't like they've been exported for 42 years. It wasn't until only a couple decades ago that they finally started being seen outside of their respective militaries. They're not that uncommon throughout the middle east because the Soviets were at war in Afghanistan for a decade and captured rifles spread around, but Africa is a different story as there are no 74s to be captured and there really haven't been many numbers of exported 74s.

the only thing gayer than 5.56 is AR owners themselves

What's the essential machinery and tooling I need to churn out AKs from parts kits? Machining knowledge is not a concern here.

>Slav barrels and their 3MOA accuracy

You wish. I'm yuropoor and I have lots of experience of slav AKs (Russian, Bulgarian, Hungarian etc) and maybe 1 in 10 of those are 3 MOA guns. 4-6 MOA is much more common. Chinese AKs are pretty much identical. Only one that stands apart is the Finnish M92 (civilian version of RK95).

Yeah? The hammer forged guns are $900 bucks, you understand that, correct? You also understand that WASRs are now around $800, correct? That's a $100-150 price difference depending on where you buy them from, and the difference is you either get a gun with an easily replaceable broken part or a gun that needs to be sent back to the factory because they couldn't be bothered to build the rifle correctly the first time.

NPAPs are trash and you're trash for thinking that they're fine. I've got a buddy with 600 rounds through his and the bolt tail is completely deformed to the point where the bolt actually sticks to the rear of the receiver after every shot. It's a piece of shit.

>>32052974
I was throwing out what I've seen from the Slav barrel AKs that I've shot, but holy fuck that's terrible.

I have Arsenal (full Bulgarian one, since we are in Europe), many of my friends have Arsenal, our shooting club has Saiga and couple a other ppl in the club have Saigas and one of my friends has a FEG and couple have Norincos. I seriously don't believe American made barrels are any worse than Slav barrels (with exeption of the soft steel shit Century puts in the C39V2 and RAS models).

I'm currently applyinh for a permit for an AR-15, I have shot 5k+ rounds with my Arsenal and I'm pretty sure the accuracy is not going to get any better.

I had my grey kitty spayed not long ago too. I like little kitties too, but think of all the kitties now on the street with no home. These cats were kittens on the street only about five or six weeks old and were going to be destroyed, so I saved all three of them because the mother cat was a whore and sucked at taking care of her kittens too.

If your extractor goes down your gun goes down until you can replace it, and replacing it is practically a three handed job. It's not a part that ever breaks on a high quality AK.

It's an extractor. It's not the end of the world if it breaks. Is it annoying? Is it shitty that DDI made a bad run of extractors? Is it unacceptable? Yes. Is it indicative of the entire rifle being of poor quality? Is it a reason for WASRfags/NPAPfags/Other traditionally shitty Eastern/Southern Slavic AK variant owners to act like they didn't buy a $600-800 shitheap? No.

Is strapping two mags together like that truly a good idea? It might make you reload a LITTLE faster, but come on, you're strapping an extra 1-2lb to your firearm. In the case of that AKM steel mag, probably almost 2lb. That's a lot of weight to add to your firearm just for the sake of making it a little faster on the first reload, then on the second you'd have to go for a fresh mag. With a STANAG mag it's not QUITE as bad; roughly 1.1lb, but still, I think it's best just to stick to one mag. I'd rather have a 7.5lb loaded firearm that will need a fresh mag upon being emptied rather than an 8.6lb firearm that will have a slightly faster initial reload but a more standard-speed second reload.
>>
>>32052989
>Over 40 mags
I know the meme goes that you can never have too many mags or too much ammo, but anon... buddy... you have too many fucking mags. Unless you have 3-4 friends who all have AK74s and have sent their mags over to you to babysit while they're away drinking vodka, you have too many fucking mags. Like, what is even the point of having that many mags?
>>
>>32053905
1964... wow. Over 50 years old, and still modern as fuck. I think the M16A1 had only just come out to replace the XM16 that was so jammy that it was getting Yanks killed in Vietnam. India was probably still using the Mk.III* Lee Enfield as its primary service rifle, though likely with that variant in 7.62 Nato. The AK-74 was still a decade from being produced, The Beatles have only been producing records for 1-2 years, the FN FAL had only been used Militarily for about 10 years, and the SVD-63 Dragunov is brand spanking new (as well as using what I think was the most advanced scope on Earth at the time). If that assault rifle could talk... if only it could talk... I probably wouldn't be able to understand it because it's Russian.
