Are Century 5.45 WASR 2's any good?
>>
>>31976552
Sure.
But expect to pay a premium if you find one, as they're mostly relegated to collectors.
Too bad Kvar/FIME won't get Arsenal to make more.
It's not like they wouldn't sell out, repeatedly.

Is their actual russian parts kits floating around or are we stuck with saigas for genuine ruskie rifles?

It's an early WASR. The parts are solid but a lot of the guns are assembled with canted sights, sloppy crooked and/or oversized mag openings that will cause mag wobble, etc.

I have an earlier-than-WASR 1990s import Cugir 5.45mm type rifle and it's rock solid.
>>
>>31975942
I can find no tests of that specific load online anywhere.

That having been said, every single Eastern European 5.45mm FMJ commercial ammo for which I have been able to find a test behaves exactly like 7N6 in ballistic gelatin--it yaws early, rapidly and violently, and sometimes curves and exits the block. It's very destructive.

I would not worry about the terminal ballistics. But since you bring up the term "SHTF"--which to me implies at least the possibility of living in a cave, or a forest dugout shelter for months if not years at a time--the non-lacquered, non-sealed steel cases give me pause. If the world is coming to an end I want ammo that won't rust or let in moisture to degrade the powder.

I am kind of an AK n00b but I was under the impression that Bulgy waffles (note the double circle 10) were rare and difficult to get in the US anyway, and that in any color other than black, they were bonafide ultra-rare collectors' items.

There's a rinky-dink little gun show not far from me this weekend. One dealer always has black Bulgy waffle 7.62x39mm mags for fifty bucks each. From what I see from importers like K-Var that's not an enormous markup.

Okay guys. I am tired of the fugly black plastic on my Arsenal.

Should I replace it with a surplus laminate set or a plum poly set?

I have 1 Izh true black mag, 3 Tula shiny plums, and 4 ((21)) firebrick red mags. If I get the laminate I should probably get a bakelite mag as well.

I don't live in the UK/GB but this is the closest source for me. US sellers are either greedy cunts that take triple shipping charges or are pussies that don't want to ship internationally. I'm stuck with buying from some European sellers.

It's an Arsenal (double circle 10 AB 28 XXXX on front trunnion) indeed.
Military surplus, it was used as an OPFOR gun with a blank adaptor in training exercises, then later sold to civilian market.

It originally had the Bulgarian hardwood stock and handguards, the plastic OD set was put on by a current owner.

It's got a MOE+ grip on here (I was dumb enough to buy a set of Magpul furniture which I mounted once and then promptly took off and stowed away), but I have the plastic furniture on now, like in the two first pictures.

I think it'd look p sleek with the plum set but at the same time I just love the look of laminate AK74 furniture combined with a bake mag.

I only got one box, don't really need more than that.
I just spray remoil all over inside my gun insides after corrosive too, keeps the corrosion away till I shoot more. That fine mist covers everything.

I expect them to fit, I just wondered about the general feel compared to other 5.45 mags. My ((10))s have tight zero-wobble fit, my plums have a tiny bit of give, and my bakelites have a bit more still. In my experience steel 7.62 mags have more wobble than polymer, is it the same case with these?

And yes, I know wobble doesn't matter in all but the most extreme cases. I just like my mag fitment on the tighter side.

I think I pissed off a few deerhunters about half a mile away a while ago. I took the 308 converted mas 49/56 out and made a hell of a lot of noise right around sunset.
Other than that, just been playing at the home range here, did a little penetration test on some softer steel with wolf gold 55gr 223, barnaul 60gr 545, and golden tiger 762. Pic related, but doesn't capture it very well.
545 penetrated about twice as deep as 762, and 556 did about double what the 545 did.

The worst part is that when I got home I heard somebody else shooting so it wouldn't have made a difference anyways.

I wasn't expecting that much difference either. I had to measure the depth with a toothpick before I believed it.
But I have a lot of steel that no normal cartridge will touch except for 223 or 556. Steel cored 54r & 308 included. A 23.3" rpk barrel probably helps a bit in the speed department too vs a 16 or something.

SGL, proper AK100 receiver, trunnion, etc, Russian barrel and shit too. SLR is basically an AKS-74 with the older trunnion equipment and a Bulgarian CHF CL barrel, all old Russian tooling
>>

do they still have those holes in the receiver like all converted Saigas have where the old trigger was?
>>

No, these were built in the same factories as the AK100s and I think the only thing they had to do was what Arsenal does, mill out the magwell, thread barrel, change furniture, etc. But they had much better QC unlike Arsenal these past almost 2 years now I think

I own several of both, and both are top-tier.

SGL:
-russian brand russian AK gives the proper feels
-most are not sidefolders, and the ones that are don't have a reinforcement plate above the pistol grip
-AK100 spec, they serve as a great base for 103/104/74M/105 clones
-price is so high at the moment there's not a good reason to buy one unless you're wealthy or a collector.
-I have never seen one that was actually parkerized under the paint, despite internet claims to the contrary.

SLR
-Bulgarians make the best AKs outside of Russia meme. This is generalizing, but accurate IMO.
-They are dressed up as AK100 series but ARE NOT, the SLR104 is an AKS-74 and the SLR107 is a high-quality mutt of AKM and AKS-74 parts.
-4.5mm folder trunnion
-barrels apparently made with Steyr tooling or something. Not sure if this is a meme, but I can say that an SLR104 is the most accurate AK in my collection. Capable 1.5 inch groups at 100m. Your mileage may vary.
-parkerized under the paint

This is just a brief overview, probably missed some details. You really can't go wrong with either one.

Just overall quality of matching, paint on the Arsenals are a tad nicer. Pretty minuscule difference between the two. I'd tend to agree that Arsenals, side by side when both were imported, were just a touch nicer.

Saigas are a little more modern in features.

I am no where near an expert in firearms and I've been trying to teach myself over the last year how to use my Slr and I am actually very satisfied with it. I know now that I want to go and reach out a little further with the platform but I'm not sure where to start.

This would be a DMR build that I'm going for. And I've narrowed it down to three rifles.. Slr104, Slr105, or 308 Vepr. Planning on using a Trijicon MRO as an optic. Is this a good route of thought? Or should I just put a Trijicon for my 107?

A DMR in the American sense is just any rifle with a scope, something an MRO is not. Take M16A4, put midpower scope on it, is now DMR. If you took any AK and grabbed a PSO 4x or 6x scope you can make it a DMR. What is the actual point of the rifle supposed to be?

>Even VZ58's aren't as good as a good AK, though
How so? Both have long service records, both are utterly reliable, and the only things anyone ever have to say that makes the AK better is that it has a bigger and better aftermarket and that the vz gets hot if you magdump. Both are fine rifles, and I don't consider one better than the other. They're combloc workhorses that each have over half a century of a fantastic track record as a service rifle.
>>
>>31975283
I'm not too concerned with how difficult it is or how much I need to invest, I really would prefer to get the means to do this myself rather than just getting a neato ak. You did say that you read up on it, do you have any suggested resources? How similar is building different types of AK? Would I be able to make sense of this build by following the build for something similar?

Sorry for seeming so new to this whole thing, but I am. I would just like to start off strong.

Calling bullshit. You don't have to believe it's better like I and plenty of other vz/ak owners do, but it's certainly not worse by any stretch of the imagination.

VZ58 is a decent alternative to an AK if you can't have one; but it is worse.

The mags are proprietary which is already a huge negative, along with the comparison of parts availability in general which is also a big issue.

The mag release is a pain in the ass compared to an AK, VERY especially with gloves on, and makes it almost impossible for left handed shooters to reload without using their firing hand.

AFAIK it also does a bit worse in function tests like mud test, etc.

It's not a bad gun, but it is worse than an AK, even if you disregard the mags and part availability.

Not really

I prefer it as a lefty actually, just use your trigger finger.
>mud test
kek yeah because InRange totally didn't make an entire video explaining mud tests specifically for people like you using them to judge whether or not something is shit depending on how bad it fails when dunked in mud

Literally the only actual negative thing you mentioned is that it gets hot which is literally negligible if you don't magdump, and if you want to magdump wear gloves

>>
>>31984420
How is mag/parts availability not a huge negative in a SHTF situation?

>Not really
The VZ has worst mag releases I've ever seen on a weapon. You have to get into a tiny gap between the release and the trigger guard. Why?

>Just use your trigger finger
You must have some long fucking fingers if you can successfully release the mag with your trigger finger. There's a good bit of resistance and releasing that way isn't easy, assuming you can push your finger that far out, and then inside the gap.

The mud test wasn't one of the major points, just a small addition. Excluding that it is still inferior.

I have one. I find it fun to shoot, but then again It's the only underfolder I have fired. Its a bit heavy being milled, somewhat strange balance to it. Surplus mags fit into it well and the finish seems decent. Only thing I don't really like about it is the button for the folding stock is a bit stiff, and seems to have a sweet spot it likes to be actuated in, and can take a bit of fooling with it to find it. This might just be because it is new, everything feels like a pretty good tight fit to me, the wood is nice. I only have probably 300 rnds through it, as it is one of my newer purchases.

>How is mag/parts availability not a huge negative in a SHTF situation?
The most likely of scenarios. Like ammo, unless you keep spare parts on hand, it's unlikely you'd ever find them anyway. IRL, you aren't going to be walking around every day post SHTF looking like a threatening rambo unless you have a death wish anyway. If you look like a threat, don't be surprised if you're proactively treated like one when someone sees you in the distance. Besides, you'll have a lot more urgent worries than your guns.
>The VZ has worst mag releases I've ever seen on a weapon
That's the one thing that could definitely be better on it, but it's not THAT bad.
But it more than makes up for it with ease of access to areas needing cleaning, BHO, a folder that takes a literal second from fold to fire, and I love having comfy stripper clips in my pockets instead of large mags. You can load or top off a 30rd mag insanely fast too.
>>31986293
