Round bullet is the Best thing to have they are more powerfull they got More range and are more stable They got everything to be used by all guns

No need to have rifling tanks do not have them the rifling can be on the bullet herself and A round bullet is more aerodynamic
>>
>>31907459
Round bullets have poor BC compared to roundnose and spitzer, so it loses energy faster.
Spheres ARE more stable, but rifling fixes that for modern bullets, negating the stability advantage of spherical bullets.
>>
>>31907523
I bet you think the new ugly shape of cars now (think Prius hatchback ugliness) is aerodynamic
>>
>>31907583
spheres are definitely not more stable if they get a spin in any direction and nothing is stopping them from getting it in fact they will most likely get a spin they will weer away in that direction due to gauss effect.

also the most aerodynamically stable form is the teardrop.
>>
>>31907459
Maybe as railgun ammo since I doubt you could rifle a railgun.
>>
Why don't they make shot with dimples in them like golfballs?

not good as railgun ammo, you need relatively large surface of contact for forming plasma for conductivity.

round bullets cant tumble like baby killing 5.56 and turn 90 degrees to cause more internal damage when shooting up a school or theater.
>>
>>31907523
Tanks don't have rifling because rifling is useless or even detrimental for APFSDS.
>>
>>31907703
Dimples are pointless without backspin.

>>
>>31907700
Navy's rail gun uses a sabot to propel the self-stabilizing dart. It is a solid armature rail gun. A plasma armature actually ionizes the projectile (aluminum works for this) and fires a jet of plasma out. A hybrid armature rail gun ionizes part of the projectile and propels the rest of the projectile down the barrel.

>>
>>31912143
you sound stupid desu

sabot has a very important role in ap technology maximizes the surface for acceleration and minimizes the surface for impact.

for railguns the reason is different you need space between the armature but you also need surface to conduct the electricity and generate plasma but you don't want to fire a projectile deformed or marred or that wide for that matter. you you make a brick shaped sabot for the projectile.

>>31910085
britbongs use special sabots for that gun if i remember correctly they counteract the rifling with bearings.

Except they use special snowflake sabots specifically designed to rotate independent of the projectile. Literally the only reason why they use rifling is their dumbass fucking HESH rounds.

How the fuck are you gonna rifle a sphere? It practically ceases to be a ball at this point, and if we're gonna give it a gyroscopic spin we go for an oblong shape, and woop, we're already at the Minieball stage.

there is literally only 1 modern mbt that still uses rifling and that's the chally2.

even the m60-2000 has a smooth-bore and it's a fucking patton
>>
>>31917019
Sorry about that. It has to do with the smoothness of the sphere.

As a general rule, the drag coefficient doesn't stay constant. At supersonic speeds it'll be different than at subsonic speeds.

Considering that, the ballistic coefficient is probably a better measure of aerodynamic efficiency.

http://www.exteriorballistics.com/ebexplained/articles/the_ballistic_coefficient.pdf

You also have to consider shock structure formation and turbulence in the wake.

Alright, so why are bullets not teardrops?
Sure, it may be trickier turning explosive power into force, but once you can do that you've got one speedy bullet.

>>31917484
Probably because its difficult to make, and the reduction in drag is not worth sacrificing the reduction in energy for.

You could just do something like this and achieve the best of both worlds.
>>
>>31917909
it was made for combat shotguns to pierce frag vests. it was deemed unethical like unnecessarily cruel or some shit.
>>
I think you guys are concentrating too much on how the bullet flies through the air and not enough on how it flies through a person's leg.

I think there's two different arguments here and one of them is that round bullets should make a comeback in certain limited applications, such as crowd control.

Shotgun loaded with 000 buck.

This board should have a literacy test.
>>
>>31918558
Checked your bracketing doubles, eight and five are my favorite numbers.

000 buck is basically 9mm bullets, and I tried to make some ghetto 000 by just straight up throwing some 9mm bullets in with some smaller shot. Holy fuck does it spread wild but I know it fucking wrecks rottweilers chasing cattle.

>>31907459
Round ball in a particular caliber can be one size only. Hence, one weight only. Why would you limit yourself to that? Terminal energy depends on velocity and bullet weight. Bullets can be many lengths, shapes, and weights for multiple applications.
>>
>>31913082
nope
it creates a huge vacuum behind the car at reasonable speeds
they're only useful under 45 MPH
