Cool. I still don't know if I would go with a pencil profile. There's a few different vids out there of how much accuracy loss you get with follow up shots and hot barrels with pencils. Anon from last thread with the Vortex Strike Eagle about to be ordered. What's a good quality QD mount for it that won't break the bank, but will still be good for that scope? So far everything seems to be $160+, is that about what I should have expected?
>>31877224
mandatory for installing a barrel. If you buy a complete upper you can get by without one though. I just put together an AR15 tonight with nothing more than a $5 punch and a hammer.

From what I've seen, makes it faster. I've assembled 3 ARs with no vice or vice block. Takes a little more time, and you have to be a little more careful and grow a 3rd arm (or have a helper for some parts or just in case) but it works.

>>31877327
Keeps the block from marking the receiver bruh. You get little crush marks if you don't use a paper towel, cling wrap, plastic bag or something wrapping the receiver.
>>31877017
If you havent purchased any parts yet, i recommend going to PSA and checking out their collection of uppers/lowers, specifically their upper barrel combo kits. You can often get some quality parts from them at a low price if your patient.

>>31877372

>>31877317
it's not the block, it's buying the actual vise and getting a bench (or getting the "tipton best gun vise" and block attachment which would run together for around $100ish)
>>31877345
psa looks like most of there stuff is sold out/back ordered. I'm hoping to get an upper without an A2 front site or carry handle, which seems to raise the price of the upper to things i can't afford right this moment
>>31877224
Actually i do not use a upper vice block when i assemble an upper. The clam shell type can allow the receiver to twist and the ones that just hold onto the bottom of the receiver with pins are the worst.
I like to clamp the receiver like pic related. You can make your own but do not use wood it's to soft. I use pieces of steel bar stock wrapped in duct tape so it dont mar. You could also use some kind of polymer like in this picture.
>>31877356
I've already bought the lower, and I like the idea behind Aero Precision's "enhanced" uppers. Plus I like supporting local businesses.
>>31877339

>>31877372

>>31877414
naw dude those are horrible they put all the stress on the take down lugs on the receiver and the most likely way to bust a receiver.
What are some good budget uppers.
Out of the three which would be the best, triton, ghost firearms or what would you recommend already have a bcg and by bidget for an complete upper is around 350
>>31877428
3" vice is to small you need at least a 4" harbor freight made in china vice and find something to bolt it too.

>>31877428
oh shit, that solves the dilemma of drilling into my apartment table
>>31877450
why is the 4" necessary?
>>31877431
maybe you missed the upward protrusions that supports the upper from the inside
>>31877384
the reason why PSA looks out of stock is because they don't stock most of their uppers. they take orders for a certain type of upper, close the orders, then make the uppers. it's a lot easier and faster making a shitload of 1 upper than it is a shitload of different uppers.
>>31877469
It's not, he's being a dipshit.

It will be no more accurate than an entry-level chrome lined CMV barrel while having a third of the barrel life or less while being only $30 cheaper.
It will be significantly less accurate than a QPQ or unlined CHF barrel but is modestly cheaper.
>>31877593
Not all barrel nut designs are shimmable, not all handguards use a barrel nut, when the instructions provided with the barrel nut say ideal torque range is 70-120lbs you listen.

>>31877616
In the $400-450 range you're looking at a stripped Aero milspec upper plus a BA unlined (non-Hanson) barrel plus A2 FSP and corresponding drop-in handguard plus Toolcraft BCG. Plus the vise and $20 Harbor Freight torque wrench you'll need to put it together.

>>31877650
In that case you're stuck with either PSA Freedom (literally the bottom of the "not actually dangerous to use" tier) or waiting on a particularly good Black Friday sale.
Babby's first AR! Happy as hell, but it needs a 14.5in barrel, among other things. 10.5 isn't really what I want to go slapping my ACOG on. Still, it was a great deal, and will do for now.
Also, it uses a commercial spec buffer tube. Are there any decent stocks like I have there right now, but better quality and built on commercial dimensions? This one is "eh" tier, kinda rattles.

Dumb barrel profiles, lotsa options for no-name, hastily produced and poorly finished stainless barrels, initial production had pinned-but-not-welded MD's regardless of barrel length, and they're generally poorly assembled.
This all results in a rifle that's heavier than it should be while kicking more than the sum of its parts would indicate and being generally an inaccurate pile of mediocrity.

Sometimes the best aren't available all the time. Maybe they've got stuff to do and awesome ARs to build. Maybe they'll just tease us by only coming on at night. Tantalizing sizzle.
Maybe they'll break the barriers by posting pics that cause the mods to ban him. Maybe they'll come crawling back in 3 days because so many people couldn't enjoy /arg/ with him gone.
No. qb doesn't do this. Nobody does this like Giddy. Maybe if other trips just made the effort to educate and entertain the community there wouldn't be need for a ruler. But that's why society without government just doesn't work out. He is the chosen one. He continues to put in the work. May nothing stop him in his journey. You treat him with respect.

Troy BUIS or KAC Micro BUIS for a 16" AR? Looking for a back-up to my Trijicon Accupower 1-4
>>31879628
I really really like the sight picture of the Troy HK-style front, but it's twice as heavy and 3x bulkier than either an MBUS Pro or KAC front.
Unless you're looking at the tritium version, the Troy rears are pretty meh over all and at the same price as a non stolen-valor KAC 600m rear not worth it. The MBUS gives the best sight picture but is a bit bulkier than the KAC, a stolen valor KAC is the best value.
>>31879678
I'll go for the KAC. Thanks
>>31879685
No prob.
I suppose it is worth mentioning that you can usually find the HK-style Troy fronts on eJew for about the same price as an MBUS Pro. They're a decent value if the bulk isn't that important.
Whats a decent fixed rear sight thats affordable? Paying $100 for one seems silly when you can cut up a used carry handle for less then half that.

Yeah, I bought an M5 rail about six months ago under the precursor that Colt would actually be able to produce the AR15A4 in reasonable numbers.
I got it used for $80. I was told (can't verify the truth of this) but it was apparently USMC issued, to a rifle that "never" left the armory. It's in good condition and it was stupid cheap so I bought it.
There's this little detent piece I think that's missing a spring but I don't even know if that part is necessary for the rail, or rather that the spring matters

Not debating quality, but getting the first generation micro is a waste.
The MRO works well for what I use it for, everyone likes to piss and moan about the tint and "not a true 1x".
If I wanted rugged I'd switch back to one of the acogs.
>>31877394
That's a really bad ミ。
>>31880294
The only swag I need is already applied to my bcg bby.
>>31880501
I think everyone's pissing and moaning not because there IS tint or magnification, but because there can be such a huge variance in tint and magnification across MRO's. I mean, when you run the gamut from nearly-perfectly-clear to color-of-Mississippi-River-delta-green and anywhere from 1.005x to 1.7x that means something is WRONG with the manufacturing process, and is a good indicator you should not trust them for serious use.

>It was supposed to be free to you. :(
But it was free, we just paid shipping. Seriously though, I still have no idea why it was an extra $2.15, maybe handling due to it not being able to run through the auto sorter? It really sounds like the USPS was jewing us out of more money per usual.

>>31880605
Assuming a verified dealer that had photos of 10 of them lined up next to each other in a fixture so the camera was exactly the same distance from all of them didn't photoshop it for no apparent reason, yes. There were like 3 threads about it over on arfcom with dozens of photos of both the variance in tint (side by side comparisons) and variance in magnification.
If by "tested and confirmed" you mean Trij releasing a formal statement about it, no.
The only one I've ever handled wasn't too bad, tint was present but not annoying (or any worse than my CompM2), and magnification was extremely minimal (1.2x or less). My big complaint was how easy it was to get glare on the ocular lens, which is just the nature of the design.
