> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.
Germany was not alone in its belated replacement of M42 Dusters in its arsenal – the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces. The redoubtable Mitsubishi was contracted to provide such a solution, and full scale engineering efforts began in 1982, with a prototype being finalised by 1983. In 1987, the new SPAAG was accepted into service with the designation Type 87. The Type 87 shared a number of similarities with its German counterpart, the Gepard, armed with a license built twin 35 mm Oerlikon KDA autocannon from Japan Steel Works, and mounted on a Type 74 MBT chassis, itself resembling the contemporary German Leopard 1. Originally, Mitsubishi had intended to utilise the Type 61, but with the proliferation of the Type 74 quickly switched over to the new tank. The cannons can achieve a rate of fire of 550 rpm and possess a muzzle velocity of 1175 m/s offering a range of up to 4 km with full stabilised firing on the move. The radar and fire control suite also resemble that of the Gepard’s with the Super Fledermaus FCS coupled with a E/F band Doppler search radar and a J Band Doppler tracking radar with a range of 15 km. Furthermore, the vehicle sports a laser warning device, a laser rangefinder and night vision equipment. One major distinguishing feature, however, is the hydropneumatic suspension on the SPAAG, able to adjust to various types of terrain. Powering it is the Mitsubishi 10ZF Type 22 ten-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine, allowing the vehicle to tackle gradients of 60 degrees and a side slope of 30 degrees.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
Welcome back to a new thread everyone. I’m thinking of doing another “special” or rather “extended” thread soon, and I’ll probably run a poll of some sort, so keep an eye out for that.
Otherwise, regarding the Type 87, there’s really not too much to say about it. In what seems like a trend in my discussions of JGSDF equipment and experience, what their vehicles lack in combat history or in innovation as such, they make up for in being efficiently designed and capable tools for their specific roles. The modern Japanese military has a history of taking on technology from the west and incorporating it into their domestic designs, from the navy to the ground forces, and the Type 87 was no different as it stuck closely to the tried and tested value of Oerlikon’s 35 mm AA suite. What resulted, as we all know, was an impressive piece of modern battlefield equipment with a mix of indigenous and foreign componentry. Currently around 50 are in service, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. If anyone has any interesting translated Japanese sources, I would be eager to know.
Finally, I would like some extra, or more obscure suggestions that I haven’t done yet. In the area of SPAAGs and other AA systems, there are always a peculiar bunch of prototypes that never made it to the production line.
Also, I found this on imgur recently, it’s an impressive overview of the equipment in PLA formations on a unit basis, and a partial look at its order of battle. https://imgur.com/a/wk2zo#LMS1lXX

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links.
The Italian Centauro II was exhibited on the 19th of October at the Checchignola Army Range on the outskirts of Rome to a gathered crowed including the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff Danilo Errico. The Army is reportedly intending to purchase 150 of the Centauros, a joint venture between Leonardo and Iveco.
The Turkish military and defense officials are currently contemplating whether to upgrade its vast fleet of M60 Pattons and Leopard 2 MBTs. Industry source state that the prospective upgrade of around 100 vehicles would cost Ankara nearly $2-3 million USD per vehicle, with the contract being likely forwarded to the Rheinmettal – BMC – Etika Strategi joint venture group RBSS.
The United States Army’s Combined Arms Centre is currently initiating revisions of the Army Field Manual 3-0, effectively the defining document on the fighting doctrine of the Army in unified operations. The new and updated doctrine will liely debut at AUSA next year, with profound implications for the future of the US Army.
NORINCO is expected to debut the export variant of its ZTQ light tank at the Zhuhai Air Show, designated the VT-5. Furthermore, a successor the ZBL-09 wheeled armoured fighting vehicle is also expected to be unveiled at Zhuhai, with a new chassis based on the VP-10.
The Ukrainian satellite manufacturer Yuzhnoye SDO is collaborating with Rheinmetall to develop a new air defense system with 35 mm autocannons. Based on the chassis of a wheeled APC, it will also equip the common Oerlikon Revolver 35 mm.
And that’s all for now.

I have a few questions about modern Armor
What is the protection against modern shells and missiles on tanks?
How are modern AT shells and missiles designed to penetrate the armor?
Does angled armor still play a role in crew protection?
Can Reactive Armor damage the tank or injure crew?
What material is used to make modern armor?
Is a massive armor thickness still needed to protect the crew and modules?
I FUCKING LOVE SPAA
>>31779269
1 of 2 things:
1: Tanks have(usually) automatic transmissions. These use ATF oil, which is colored red to seperate a leak from normal engine oil. Tanks also have plugs underneath to drain water/oil/shit from inside, so if these are open and you have leak, shit will flow out
2: Some tanks have adjustable suspension, usually using oil. So if that leaks out, it would also look like this.
My money is on it having a masse gearbox leak though.

>Can Reactive Armor damage the tank or injure crew?
>What material is used to make modern armor?
ERA is explosive force that is directed outwards, and as such should have no impact on the integrity of the armor it is placed on. It can, however, injure troops on the outside that are within 5-10 m of the brick, but it shouldn't injure any crew inside the tank as far as I know. The German Puma IFV has a system called Clara that is theoretically infantry-safe, as it uses a fibreglass reactive composition.
Modern armor is invariably made up of tempered and laminated steel, with some lighter vehicles making use of aluminum and fibreglass hulls.
Composite can range from anything to super-secret proprietary materials like nano-tubes or crystallized surfaces etc, to more mundane stuff like rubber, carbon fiber, ceramics, different types of metals, and so on. Apparently some spaced armor compartments use water and gels as well.

>>31780876
>ERA is explosive force that is directed outwards, and as such should have no impact on the integrity of the armor it is placed on
um...how do they direct the force of the ERA explosion outwards only? the armor on which ERA is mounted has to be decently thick or else it will suffer damage
>>31782859
Heh, typos appear from time to time I guess.
>>31782868
>>31780876 here, that was a really shitty way of wording the post. You're absolutely right in saying the armor has to be sufficient to withstand the explosive force in the other direction, but what I meant was that the force (and the plate) in the other direction would be pushed outwards while the armor would have not problem dealing with the other direction of force.
>>31782000

>snipers have been dispatched to the anticipated area in the border where theyre anticipated to cross
>they spot the 2 arabs, shoot one dead, other one gets away injured
>engineering corps, armored corps and infantry arrive at the scene
>its late so we wait till morning to cross the border and claim the body
>intelligence notifies us that there's a mobile phone on the body with phone numbers of some higher ups
>its morning, we prepare to cross the border
>120mm (i think) mortar shell hits the tank infront of mine, no serious damage
>2nd mortar shell hits my tank, only damages the equipment baskets at the rear of the tank, shrapnel hits a soldier behind our tank, light injuries
>more mortars start raining down, hitting jack shit
>infantry starts taking sniper fire as they unlock the gate at the border (no injures)
>we cross the border
>establish a front line while taking ak fire while the engineering corps claims the body
>tank commander gets shrapnel to his face from a sniper bullet that hit the turret (his door thingy was slightly open for better sight)
>shoot around a bit

Do Russian tanks use DU Sabots?
>>31789895
Yes, most common APFSDS round in Russian stocks is the Soviet-era BM-32, which is DU. The new round, BM-46 is also DU.
Export ammunition is mostly steel (BM-17 sold by Soviets) or steel and tungsten (BM-42 sold by Russia).
>>31790075
The round you refer to as BM46 is actually BM48, and by new you mean from the early 90's.
Russia's 'new round' is the BM59 and BM60, which are too long for old autoloaders and can only be used by the T-90A, T-72B3 and T-14.

http://breakingdefense.com/2016/10/bring-back-artillery-submunitions-russian-threat-too-great/
What does /thg/ think of this perspective that we lack submunitions in a future face off with Russia or China? I think it's pretty convincing, considering the success forces in Ukraine have had in thermobaric weapons and also with conventional artillery in places like Georgia and Chechnya. We might have been conditioned after Iraq 1 and 2 to reply too much on air delivered precision which won't be enough in a war where the skies are contested.
>>31795255
For the foreseeable future, in any engagement with either China or Russia, the US would dominate the skies. Barring some quantum leap in SAM tech, (and no, the S-400 is not a quantum leap), I don't see a situation where air-launched PGMs being impossibe to deliver exists.
>>31795343
But wouldn't it be better to hedge our bets and not lag behind the capabilities of Russia or China?
>>31795450
I agree, I think restrictions on cluster munitions and submunitions are a mistake. The civilian impact of duds is an issue, sure, but in a war scenario, the US needs to be prepared.
>>31795255
I just want the US to make one of these:

What's the point of having one of these VLS tanks when there are theatre level AA, MLRS and artillery assets that can do the job with less complexity, armor and at a longer range?
Short range AT and AA vehicles already exist, mind you, without needing VLS tubes.
Does anyone know what Frenchfag is doing these days?
>>31807207
vls means your missiles are all ready to fire, they are protected by your front/side armor, have more flexibility in what missiles you load, and can fire indirectly.
those short range AT/AA vehicles would be replaced by VLS carrying tanks.

They're completely different. Still, tactical use of nuclear weapons should never be completely out of the question, and are something one should consider, should the necessity arise.
>>31810107
They're getting rid of most CBUs and a huge portion of the DPICM stock at the very least.

What is;
>the best wheeled IFV
>the best tracked IFV
>>31812845
I can tell you my favorite wheeled IFV, which is the Patria AMV.
>>31812845
A lot of them is comparable today but Id say Patria AMV and CV9035 Mk III
>>31812145
Given when they were first made and when Egypt got Abrams, it wasn't.
>>31812845

The Namer and M1256.

I can invent a microwave and call it a nuke if I want to. But that will not make it a nuke.
If its armed with anything less than a 20mm autocannon its not considered an IFV.
>>31813716
"No U" isn't an argument.
>>31813808
Having a 20mm or larger gun isn't the definition of an IFV.
>>31802563
R A R E
>>31813877
Correct, some other factors also has to be met.
>The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe defines an infantry fighting vehicle as "an armoured combat vehicle which is designed and equipped primarily to transport a combat infantry squad, which is armed with an integral or organic cannon of at least 20 millimeters calibre and sometimes an antitank missile launcher."
>>31813906
Congrats, you evidenced that the users classification defines what an IFV is.
>>31813877
The Namer isn't called an IFV by the Israelis.
>>31813936
So there should be no universal definition of anything?
By that logic my microwave example applies to.
post special snowflake tanks
>>31813967
Excellent strawman. The topic is your black and white personal classification, not whether there is a universal concert.
>>31814059
>concert
consensus
>>31814059
Its the generally accepted view of an IFV. Much like beeing able to heat things with microwaves is the generally accepted view of a microwave.
What the fuck is going on? The IDF explicitly calls the Namer an APC. There's no reason for argument you tards.
>>31814025
The Soviets, I swear to god.
>>31814025
That's not an IT-1, but what is it?
>>31815053
Nevermind, I have answered the question for myself. It's Object 287, a T-64 variant like the IT-1 but with two BMP-1 guns as well.

>Protection
Various types of armour. Good old fashioned composite armours. Spaced armour (a sheet of armour put a certain distance off from the main armour) works well against HEAT. Can be plates or caged armour, it creates standoff to trigger the HEAT fuse and makes the molten jet ineffective. There's reactive armour, small blocks that detonate when hit by a round. They're supposed to destroy or minimize damage done by a round. Find them all over Slav vehiclds. There's Active armour - which can be lasers that fuck up missile trackings, aerosols that trigger fuses, mini-projectiles that shoot out and destroy missiles.
>Shell types
Sabot which is purely kinetic force that drives through the armour.
HE that creates a massive fucking explosion to crumble armour and/or concuss the crew
HEAT fires a molten jet of liquid metal that will pierce through armour.
Tandem type warheads, where the first warhead will destroy armour, the second one finishes the job
>Angled armour
Worms well against AP/solis shot rounds like Sabot. Can richochet other rounds completely or cause the munition to glance off.
>Reactive armour
Explosion is outwards. No injury to crew but might scratch the paint, or a fragment from the resulting explosion might damage optics, lights, other shit.
>What makes up armour
Composites and compounds of super sekrit materials))). Kevlar, steel and other stuff.
>Massive armour required
There's so much armour you can use before you need stronger engine, stronger transmission, stronger electronics for the turret, etc and shit gets impractical.
