Grab and go edition. What do you have that you can grab and go in less than 5 minutes?

Previous thread:

Also a question, is there a point to gear in small towns? I feel like most small, isolated towns away from the big cities in the US will see no action if shit theoretically hit the fan, and people will be sitting there watching their old 40lb TVs and listing to the radio while laughing about how major cities are somehow going to shit.

I've been messing with a solar flashlight, called a hybrid light or something.
Not the brightest guy ever but the recharging ability is cool. I just throw it on my truck dash once a month to charge up while I'm at work. It can also recharge mobile devices and it can charge my HTC 10 perfectly.
The only part I don't like is how it goes low/high/off instead of high/low/off but this a tiny problem.

General question:
How many 20rd or 30rd magazines should I have minimum on my person in a combat/shtf scenario in addition to mags for my sidearm?

Combat: ready access to 8
SHTF: ready access to however many it takes you to break contact. 4 should be plenty.

I have a GoalZero solar charger. It's a great piece of kit for a pack. It can charge pretty much any size of common battery (recharagable batteries required of course) as well as charge anything hooked to a USB connection like a phone. It can also use batteries as a power source to charge the USB connection.

Great item for innawoods.

I've got pretty much pic related all loaded up to go. Obviously I won't be able to throw the camo on that quickly but my chest rig, rifle, belt and side arm can all be donned and ready to go in about 5 minutes. I also have my pack packed up with a good portion of my camping gear, granted it's not as prepped up at the moment. I've been working on re-organizing stuff so my pack isn't fully stocked up right now. I live innacity for the most part though so I wouldn't really have time to get out of dodge really. It's just hoping I'm not in a blast radius and then hope that whatever fallout and looting that will be going on afterwards won't kill me.

High Sierra Appalachian 75. It's pretty good. I got it on sale for $75 or so I think from woot.com. Check out woot's camping gear, they have some good shit on sale every now and again. The pack itself is comfy and worked well. I packed in 35 - 40lbs worth of shit, and actually even over packed when I went down the Grand Canyon for 3 days. I had no problems with lugging it 12 miles with all my stuff loaded up so it works for me. Only thing is, with the way I pack my stuff it looks like a giant cock. I won't lie, that's actually a contributing factor to me rearranging my current set up....

She said we were leaving in 30 minutes so grab whatever I need for a hotel for the fee days then we were going to stay at a relative until we moved to a new apartment. I was ready in five minutes with all my possessions. Aside from my mattress and 50 inch 4K.

Would it be dumb to buy a east german steel helmet for encase of happenings?

I saw a video of them managing to stop 9mm and .45 with minimal damage to the helmet. I am not going to go and spend $400 on a real kevlar helmet, so I figure one of these would be better than nothing at all.
>>

You can get MICH and ACH's for less than $200. Throw in $50 worth of suspension systems and pads and you have maximum comfy.

Or grab a russian helmet from greyshop, but I don't know shit about their ballistic ratings.

In case of happenings, you'd be better off with a baseball cap (civilian, not a patch cap) or a beanie. Ossie helmets are cool to wear around the house and put on the shelf, but carrying around that much weight on your head just wouldn't make sense. If you were shot in the head wearing a steel helmet, even if it managed to stop the bullet, you'd still get your bell rung pretty badly. Steel helmets were primarily to protect the head from shrapnel and debris, and in any major emergency scenario there is unlikely to be shrapnel, and if there is debris you'd be better served by a lighter option like a construction or bike helmet in a dull color like black or navy blue. If you want a helmet, get a Pro-Tec helmet like this and keep it tucked in your pack until tree branches and rubble start falling from above.

I run an earpiece and PTT for the coms.

And I may even run howard leights over the earpiece only if i'm going without the helmet or if I ever get an opscore.

And the sling attached to the armor is fine, Its loose enough to move the weapon to both left and right sides just fine.

Be aware that the UBL belt holes are sized for a cop duty belt which is usually 2" or 2.25". So on a 1.5" or 1.75" rigger's belt there is some flex which can make it hard to draw smoothly from retention. So some add a leg strap to the UBL hanger to keep that from happening. It looks like a drop leg but doesn't actually drop the gun as much as a normal drop leg setup does.
>>
>>31716062
Except how do you sling up your gun when the armor is off? Plus how do you sling it over your back if you want to climb something like a wall? Can you use your sling for mechanical support if you have to make a shot at distance?
>>
>>31716079
I may take your advice and remove it from the armor depending on my situation but currently I would never be in a combat situation without my armor and PC. Also it can still sling to my side or back if need be. And single point slings don't provide mechanical support either way.

Yes anon, there is reason to gear up on small towns. Where do you think the panicked masses that flee the cities will go? The book One Second After illustrates this point well; when life in the city is suddenly a fight for survival, people want abundant resources and comfort. When they think about that, they think of a small town somewhere relatively close by that they usually blow though on the way to some other major city.

Need some help fellas. Didnt want to make a seperate post for this so thats why i posted here. It is feeling more and more like shit is going to go down. Im looking to arm myself but not really sure what I should be looking for. Was hoping for some advice on a rifle and handgun purchase.

I would like them to be hardier weapons that can go through some shit and keep firing.

Something that uses the most widely available ammo. By this I mean, in times of scarcity which rounds are still likely to be available. I have been asking around and I have been told to go with Nato rounds for the rifle and 9mm rounds for the handgun. Does that makes sense to ya'll or should i be looking at a different calibers.

Nothing super advanced as I am a novice.

I would prefer they not be super expensive but I am def willing to spend if that is what it takes to get a reliable weapon.

Something that does not jam easily.

So far I have been told to get an AR-15 for the rifle, but have not found a consensus on the handgun. I was also told to by a lower reciever and upper reciever instead of just buying the AR out right as it is much cheaper that way.

Any info/advice would be appreciated. Stay safe out there anons.
>>
>>31718028
>in times of scarcity which rounds are still likely to be available
Post Sandy Hook buyouts demonstrated how common calibers disappeared off shelves. In a disaster situation bugging in with stocked supplies is the most practical. Any idealistic scenarios like scavenging outside should be dismissed.

>should i be looking at a different calibers.
5.56 and 9mm are popular for a reason, and it's reasonably cheap to train with them.

>Handgun
Honestly get the AR and spend the money on a good optic, sling, and training. In all aspects other than weight and size, the rifle hopelessly outclasses and handgun. If you're set on one there's a ton of inexpensive older handguns. Ruger P series, CZ75's, BHP'S, there's a bunch to choose from.

>It is feeling more and more like shit is going to go down.

When you throw the gun over your back what keeps it from flopping back over if you're doing something like trying to keep a low profile as you come over the top of a wall? Also I realize you aren't getting any mechanical support from a single point.

That's why my general recommendation is a two point adjustable sling, worn around the neck. If you wear it like a necklace you still have enough slack to switch firing shoulders and all that good stuff.

This is probably the most realistic option for survival in the whole thread. Also, if one has experience with it, it does not matter if it is not a brand name pack - as long as it does not immediately break.

And yes, you can spot a city person and/or a young person just by looking at all the useless military gear in perfect condition, never used. It just screams "I am trying to get wet, cold, hungry and tired".

There's no food, map/compass/GPS, rain coat, proper boots(!), water purification equipment or chemicals, documents in ziplock bag, pen and paper...the list goes on, very basic hiking stuff that you could fit in a large pouch if you wanted to!

And then you get THAT GUY who says it's all useless and weighs a lot in an emergency - and THAT GUY needs to at least go out once and see how many days they last in a forest with that gear.

What do you call the same kind of person of geardo threads that always will talk about some kind specific SHTF scenario that he has in mind that a priori rules out having the coolguy gear in the first place? Why does the gear HAVE to be about some nutnfancy WROL SHTF setting? Does anyone else just get the gear because it's intrinsically fun and interesting to build it in a purely combative sense without regard to the likelihood of actually needing it?

>My ultimate grab and go combat / rucking setup

This setup shown here is for when I need to get in combat and ruck out as well.

This setup is very heavy and will be even heavier with my AR15 not shown here because i'm currently painting it.

Things I could ditch in case I don't have time:
>Gloves, knee pads, POSSIBLY helmet but I doubt.
Things I would always keep for combat:
>Plate carrier and plates, combat belt.

Also the bag is fully loaded with everything I need for a couple days of rucking out.

Tent or tarp is not shown because I don't have it with me right now but I have one or the other of that as well.

Fucking pictures would turn out sideways, oh well.

That previous setup would take 5-10 minutes to get on.

This setup would take 5 or less and is still combat ready.

I would take my coms pouch and coms themselves off of my PC and put them on my belt / person along with magazine pouches.

Again rifle is not shown here.

r8 and h8 both setups please if you want.
>>
>>31721115
I run the condor MOPC as well and it works just fine.

Only minor threads coming loose after years of use.

Would recommend but side plates aren't needed so ditch those.

There are plenty of other places on your sides to get shot so 6 inches won't matter much.
>>
>>31709804
Where can I get this setup?
>>
>>31721186
Considering the pouches I'm planning on using + MOLLE flap for my PC costs less than $100, and will be immediately useful vs 3-400$ in plates which won't be, I think pouches are a little more important.

Their bags are awful on your back, their softshells are identical to TAD ripoffs on taobao, and their PC's are flimsy as shit.

Only their pouches are worth something but the colors can be off.
>>
>>31723190
>>31723844

Well theres one I thing I agree with him on, the prevail level IV plates on shellback tactical look amazing and are just slightly less than what AR500 weighs yet they can stop way more due to them being level IV.

But I still recommend the MOPC and just ignore the "condor is airsoft gear" shills.

AR500 level 3 or 3+ can only stop up to .308 but they are probably cheaper than the prevail level IV's.

Personally i'd save up for the best kind of armor so something ceramic. Whether it be SAPI's or something else.
>>
>>31718756
im starting to like the idea of the rdb more and more but im waiting till more people shoot them and figure out how they do before i think about getting one
>>
>>31723874
The fabric isn't top tier obviously I mean what do you expect.

My MOPC seems to fit fine on me and I used to run a softshell as well which felt fine.

Not sure about their bags though.

Also run their pouches which work like any pouch would.

And all PC's are probably flimsy until you put plates in them lol. They are designed to have plates in them.
>>
>>31723844
But if AR500 is all you can afford so be it.
>>
>>31723396
I saw you trying to sell this in the last thread for $18 shipped, bought it off eBay for $20 right? You're better of going into Wally World and getting two sets of buckles for ~$.50 a pop, and making something out of it. And yes, I am that autistic...

Look at the weights carefully. Sometimes, LVL III+ steel is lighter than LVL IV ceramic, at about the same price. Check bulletproofme for some inexpensive products

I haven't done much research on it (who researches their purchases these days?) but it seems to me like a plate carrier with multiple harness systems, front panel options, and zip on back panels so that you can create the best plate carrier for you. Do you want MOLLE in the front? You can have it. Would you rather just have a 3 mag shingle? It's got that too, and it doesn't require the extra ounces of having a MOLLE attachment yet is is still firmly secure. Don't care too much about comfort? Get a yoke instead of a harness and have a lower profile PC with less padding. Want better airflow? Buy the harness and get the pads.

Build what you want rather than buy and modify.

I've been toying with the idea that wearing just full concealable soft armor is a better choice than a plate carrier or full armor for a static defense against rioting type scenario.

Soft armor can defeat handguns, and statistics says the overwhelming majority of criminal guns are handguns. So, I'd rather have full torso protection against the most likely threat than rifle protection in the form of plates.

Having a slick vest of soft armor under clothes would also make me not stand out tremendously which is good for avoiding both rioter attention and accidentally getting shot by freaked out cops during a chaotic time.

I'm thinking something like the Paraclete LVBC in a solid color. It can be low profile, and if I change my mind about plates, can also accept them.

Thoughts?

I used an Ops-Core x-nape in Afghanianistann. It was really great. Some guys sprung and got dial-liners out of their own pockets and loved them even more. I tried on on and could literally bend over and have the helmet not fall off my head.

Used Norotos INVG mount and triangular base plate. Only complaint was that it shipped in anodized stupid fucking gold. Spraypainted it anyway, so whatevs.

I meant with it unstrapped by the way. With my x-nape strapped it was solid, the dial liner just allowed solid even when unstrapped and it had good airflow.

Yeah sure. They're douchebags. Great example
in country we made friends with a village. Seals came through our AO without telling us and shot that village up. When we finally met up with them their justification was they saw one of them with an Ak. I lost my shit. Mother fucker its afg everyone has an Ak. I wouldn't get off the plane in afg without an Ak or another weapon system.

The next seven months there we took contact from that village every time we rolled through there. SEALs are douchebags. Also every other SOF community hates them for writing books about everything they do. They're not the best they just do the most advertising. They spit in the face of the "Quiet Professional" mantra SOF guys tend to follow. Atleast the older ones.

You know in war you're supposed to shoot at the people with the guns that look bad.

Coming from someone who sounds like they served I think you would know that.

Who gives a fuck if they write books, sure most spec ops guys in general are full of themselves what do you expect?

Being humble is hard to come by nowadays.

Soldiers have been writing books about their experiences for centuries especially ones who do some seriously dangerous operations like SEALs.

>>Thinking I care about your opinion at this point. It just amazing to see how dumb you are.

Aks are legal for Afgs to own. They can do whatever the fuck they want with them. They shoot that shit in the air to celebrate and its perfectly legal. If they had something else like a pkm, or digging on/near a road especially during unauthorized hours then they would have been cleared to engage but they were as far as I read in the reports following the law of their fucking country.

>>
>>31728251
The "war on terror" was rigged to be lost anyway.

Wars like that are setup, first you take out the dictator (as bad as he may be) which leaves a huge gap in the country.

Prior to that you armed jihadists to fight soviets.

So once the dictator is gone that hole you left wide open lets the insurgents that were fighting the dictator to move in as well as the jihadists you armed to fight the soviets.

Then you invade AGAIN causing more people to join the terrorists ranks.

And tada an endless and pointless fight.

Yes having the population on your side is great and a key step to win a war but I think the safety of your fellow brothers come before residents of a foreign land.

Did this person with the AK engage anyone?

You do realize that many terror cells blend in with the villages people right?

>>
>>31728267
The laws don't mean jack shit if you have reasonable suspicion that the person with the AK was plotting something or was engaging your men.

Was he being provoking?

Did he obviously want to start conflict?

And most importantly did the SEALs even know the laws and rules on firearm ownership and use in Afg?

>Soccer mom I read about in /k threads

>Scary men with guns standing around

Last time I checked the locals fight the terror cells as well, and i'm pretty sure any ground force would be used to seeing practically everyone around them with a weapon.

I highly doubt professionals would have smoked an armed local for no reason whatsoever.
>>
>>31728285

Do you honestly think all or even the majority of SEALs would do that without some kind of hesitation
or check that the person should be taken care of?
>>
>>31728282

You know you're combining the history of Iraq
and AFG into one country right?

>>Wars like that are setup, first you take out the dictator (as bad as he may be) which leaves a huge gap in the country.

Iraq

>>Prior to that you armed jihadists to fight soviets.

No that was AFG.

>>Then you invade AGAIN causing more people to join the terrorists ranks.

U.S only invaded afg once.

You're talking about Iraq again.

There was a Marxist revolution in AFG but the U.S had no part in that outside of supporting mujahadeen. But the U.S never installed a dictator in AFG

>>Did this person with the AK engage anyone?
No that village was cool with us until the Seals fucked it for us.

>>You do realize that many terror cells blend in with the villages people right?

Please anon tell us more of all your experience in COIN operations.
>>
>>31728285
By your logic, everyone that is a SEAL is guilty for the actions of those few.

Do you have any other proven cases of SEALs doing the same general thing any other times?

I'm sure there are plenty, but i'm also sure there are THOUSANDS of cases where infantry whether it be army or marines have done the same thing if not worse.

You can't blame the majority for the actions of the minority in this case especially.
>>
>>31728328
You're changing the point of that post and you're changing your argument.
>>
>>31728282
The political rambling has nothing to do with COIN.

The US miitary in GWOT is tasked with COIN

In order to win at COIN you don't shoot people for no reason.

No, if you shoot people who aren't actively engaging you you make it more dangerous. You just iced muhammad who was carrying a rifle because The TB threaten him in the bazaar because he doesn't want to give his sons up to fight ISAF. Congrats. All his sons are now TB as well as everyone else in the village. You just made the entire AO more hostile by trying to make it more safe, violating ROE to do so.

Just stop now.
>>
>>31728349
No i'm combining the history of the war on terror in general. Correct me if i'm wrong (and i'm sure you will)

did some of the terrorists from Afg move into Iraq to fight the US?

Also by removing the dictator in Iraq that pretty much guaranteed an insurgent uprising anyways.

And invading Afghanistan was more fuel on the fire for the war on terror and was basically fighting the people that the US government armed in the fucking 80's
>>
>>31728356
>>31728328

I'm saying they get to operate by a different set of rules and get a lot more leniency when they fuck up.

I don't care about the death of that fucking villager you retard. I care that Seals got a different standard than the rest of us and face less consequences for their actions.

If one of my guys did that it would have been hell.

No, fucking not. Atleast not the street level ones who did shooting. The commanders who are funded through clinton/saudi cash probably.

Let me give you the world perspective of the average afghan villager.

some fucking afghans thought we were the soviets. As in he thought the soviets never left.

Another literally thought we were literal robot terminators. I mean like from the movie terminator.

They don't give a shit especially not to go across iran to fight.

You know we invaded AFG first right? And no. Those guys are all orchestrators and have been mostly bombed out of existence.

Street level guys are mostly bribed to cross from pakistan and shoot a few potshots or mortar rounds.

I don't. But they are held to a more flexible standard and everyone knows it.
>>
>>31728423
Not him, but I hope that's not what you were issued. That kit is hodgepodge as fuck.

The UCP pouches have that weird cheapo pink tinge. The pistol pouches are the loose as fuck GI ones from 20 years ago, out can buy better stuff for $10 from a PX. It's all setup horribly and is somehow bulky without even being a proper combat loadout.

Kit aside, the fact that she is landwhale sized is probably the worst thing. Bad gear can be improvised into a decent setup and be aesthetic and useful if you aren't a total fat body.

On the not of aesthetics, she's wearing a UCP vest, multi cam uniform, Sage boots meant for ABU, and a green helmet. Fuck, pick a theme.

It's just so foreign to me. In every Army unit I was in, at the most basic bitch level you at least got a full rifleman's kit. Additional unit level issue would replace or add to basic kit to create a decent field kit.

Gear was expected to be ready to use in a non-retarded setup. Nothing about that picture looks like there was any thought or experience put into setting it up.
>>
>>31728501
Nah dude, I said same shit and meant it, some ucp pouches (including ifak), old school GI mag pouches for web belt, old school web belt+canteen combo, ucp vest, multicams, 1(!!!) combat shirt, green helmet with ucp cover (but only if I asked for it). I actually was issued sand boots though.

Best part is I show up and my flight is attached to an afsoc squadron with super nice multicam everything, LBT6094 they just transitioned out of for newer stuff, nice soft shells , fleeces and hard shells , issued lowas, crye combat shirts. Fuck my life dude.

You can get chest panels that also come with add on straps that can be added/removed to make the panel standalone when you want. It adds versatility for when you might not want to wear armor.

The USGI TAP rig does this, and you can keep the straps folded away in the inside map pouches if you need them. Other panels have similar add-ons.

Wore plate carrier with ESAPI in it for dismounted missions over mountains and all that shit. The weight and bulk was managable with just plates. With soft armor it would have been extremely unmanagable, especially considering I was already almost always carrying a large ruck.

Wore full plate and soft armor (IBA) innadesert. Heavy and too loose at the waist area. Would have significantly disrupted being able to operate as effectively as possible.

Wore IBA and then later full armor CIRAS innaTiger Land. Both significantly degraded the ability to effectively operate. The CIRAS was an improvement over the IBA, but was still too heavy and bulky.

Research done by the military has shown that carrying more than 50lbs of total gear will significantly and sharply degrade individual effectiveness and mental state. For that reason alone I'd never want to wear full armor again, since a full armor vest weighs at least 30 pounds, and with the addition of even the most basic rifle kit will almost certaintly cross that 50lb threshold. Add on a ruck and/or incliment conditions like high humidity and individual effectiveness is in the shitter.
