My brother recently got an old Navy KA-BAR (he's a navy vet) from ebay. I like the feel of it. How are modern versions, they viable or is there something better as a combat and utility knife?
>>

All of their tangs are meh. They can hold up to abuse, don't be surprised if it breaks.

The design is solid but IMO Kabar's gotten a little crazy about pricing lately. I bought a fancy Kabar some years ago (probably over a decade now) and it cost about as much then as the standard Kabars do now. A cheaper alternative for what's practically the same knife would be the SP1, but if you want to stay in the same price range the Becker BK7 is a great option for not much more money.

I usually like boker, but magnum line has a history of qc issues. This one will likely be perfectly fine as its hard to fuck up a fixed blade, but just be a little cautious. Their steel is usually well treated as well.

>>31601576
Nearly bought that but went with a rajah 3 instead. The new ones or the aus8 ones?

>>31601360
Pretty solid like most kabars. Tang is pretty meh for what you pay for. It's overpriced in my opinion, but it'll work.

It's a bit large but it's a solid and reliable knife. Pic related is it next to an endura and paramilitary2. Rat 2 is just as solid, but slightly smaller.
>>
>>31602881
How good does it keep an edge, looking for something that can take a beating
>>
>>31602961
It's aus 8, as such it's edge retention isn't anything spectacular like with s30v, it's comparable to 440c, but it's solid and can easily withstand abuse. The lock up is damn solid and the opening is smooth. Could easily be used as a secondary backpacking knife. What's your intended use?
>>
>>31602961

It's AUS-8 steel, not particularly good. Has a semi-low HRC, which for a beater knife is good thing because that means less chips and less of a chance of it snapping, but more sharpening.

I recognize the 6 inch versions as pure combat weapons. They are devastating if you're mildly proficient at blade direction control, and positional switching. For how large they are, for how light the non-aluminum versions are, for how quickly they deploy, they're just simply great.

I love reverse opening them in a pick-style grip, they are just brutal in any way you choose to use them. Belly slashing, coming down through a collar bone, between ribs, they can so versatile.

Great weapon.

>>31603247
For street combat, concealability, and speed of deployment, I consider it much better. Again, even though it has a false edge, it's very good at piercing. With a bit of edge directional control, it can be used to do any job you need to do on a body.

They sit so well in pockets, despite being 13 inches in total length. Deploying them with the pant snag quillion is extremely fast. If you consider that the most effective weapons are the ones they don't see coming, they are hard to beat.
>>
>>31603268
Assist>wave
>>
>>31603300
Nope. You have to take it out of your pocket then deploy (2 steps). Wave is 1 step, so it's faster.

Last reply from me, sport. After this you can take your shitty assist knife and shove it up your ass. I can't imagine YOU work in a suit. Go ahead and prove me wrong though (kek u can't). The only place for a CHILD to wear a suit is a wedding or funeral. Because I called you a 12 year old, it made sense to have you wear a suit at a funeral and not just out and about. Perhaps if you actually had some reading comprehension skills beyond that of fourth grader I would not have to sit here and spoonfeed you. Enjoy the rest of you weekend, buddy. What's a fairly cheap all purpose knife I could use for work? I work for a home renovation company and I do electrical wiring and carpentry for them.

My last knife was some SOG assisted open that I got from a friend for Christmas and I wore and chipped the hell out of it. I've been thinking about an endura, but I'm on the fence.
Does it hold up to heavy wear? I prefer assisted open knives, can't use fixed blade.

That guys a retard. Endura is an excellent and reliable knife. If you spend more money you'll get a fine knife as well. Endurance is vg10, which is easy as fuck to resharpen. Textured frn is both comfy and reliable. If you want to spend more, get a yojimbo or paramilitary 2, which have more wear resistant steels overall. You'll want to go for a more wear resistant steel.

Or is that illegal too?

if you can find an old KA-BAR (korean war and earlier) get it. the new models are way too thin to hold up to the reputation that was earned in it's early years.

if you're looking at a newer made KA-BAR then pass for something with more substance.

also the easiest way to identify the old KA-BAR's from the new ones is to look at the thickness of the blades. the old ones are noticeably wide (>1/8 inch thick), the new ones simply aren't. The company would probably claim advancements in metallurgy, but as others have said, they break.

I'm currently looking for a replacement for the SOG Flash II I lost in a movie theater. I don't want another SOG because the clip constantly snagged on shit when I would clip the knife to the inside of my work pants pocket.

Suggestions?

Welp, ordered a 6-inch Ti-Lite with G10 and CTS-XHP for less than $110. I was going to get the Zytel one but for that price I got the new steel. I hope it's legit.

Mine just came in today because I live in the middle of nowhere. When I first held it in my hands, it honestly felt like I was holding an expensive kitchen knife. Probably because I am not used to rubber and polymer on my handles

After messing around with it though I can say it's no joke, the thing can last a while.

Are Mark 1's sturdier? From some preliminary research, some sources say that Mark 1's were only produced for a short time due to some minor flaws and were soon replaced with the Mark 2. Then the Mark 2 was produced by a number of manufacturers, one of which—Union Cutlery—used the Ka Bar nam, and Mark 2's eventually became to be known as Kabars. On the other hand, I see people in some forums talking about how Mark 1's are stronger than Kabars. It's making me think that "Mark 1" is used generally to refer to older knives of this style.
>>
>>31612799
Here is one brief account.

>World War 2 was the first war in which the US ISSUED what might be called the General Purpose sheath knife.

>The US entered World War One without a sheath / fighting knife. The M1917/M1918 were developed for the specific use of trench fighting, and were only useful for stabbing or punching. The Model 1918 Mark 1 was a better knife, but was still clumsy to use and did not see a lot of action as even the ones made in France did not enter the war until summer 1918.

>Before and between the wars if some sort of knife was needed in a particular job, it was normally included in some sort of kit and not to an individual. Most of those were specialized and many were folding pocketknives such as the Signal Corps version which became the TL-29. There was no standard issue sheath knife and soldiers were discouraged from having a personal one as the officers felt that they might be used in "personal altercations".

>When the US entered WW2 the only sheath knife in the inventory was the Mark 1, most of which were apparently issued to the Airborne troops. It was soon apparent that there was both a use and a demand for sheath knives in all services. Although some knives were soon designed for specific issue (the Army M3, the Navy Mark 1 and Mark 2, the USMC 1219C2 among others) delivery of most of these did not begin for over a year after we entered the war. In the meantime, fairly large numbers of commercial 5, 6 and 7 inch blade commercial sheath knives were purchased or donated. Many of those ended up as unit purchases or for sale in the PX system and were not general issue.
>>
>>31612851
>Once the "standard" knives entered the system and began to be issued, there was still a demand among troops who either were not to be issued a knife due to their specialty or were waiting until the supply caught up with the demand for the standard knives. Also, many soldiers who were issued rifles with bayonets still wanted to carry a sheath knife as well. The Quartermaster Corps bought essentially the entire output of most of the knife makers and sold them through the PX and Ships Stores. The best known are the Pal RH36 and the KaBar Commando although almost all the larger makers provided some. Some of these were actually unit issued while others were private purchases.

>By the end of the war the total production of these sheath knives was in the millions (as was the production of pocket knives) and a great many were brought home. The Navy considered the Mark 1 and Mark 2 as personal issue and sailors were allowed to keep them if they so desired which accounts for them being so common yet today.
>>
>>31612863
I found a comparison of the two. The Mark 2 is a bit larger than the Mark 1, designed more specifically for combat than the Mark 1. There is also a shorter verion than either commonly called a "Kabar Short".

Hello friends, I would need some advice.

I'm looking for a flip knife, but something that's durable and the safety switch wont broke or the flip mechanism after a year or earlier, which one would you recommend. Budget something around $60 would be nice, but you could recommend something that's little above if it's good.

CalvinNation, BalisongAddict, and cutlerylover on YouTube all make great tutorials.
Start with the basic horizontal, also called the double rollout, and then move to other simple openings in both normal grip and icepick/reverse.
You'll also want to remove the latch from the handle, as it's supposed to be on the other handle. Being where it is now will mess you up, and since yours is a CCC (cheap chinese crap) it's better to remove it completely than try to move it.

Well they're normally up for about 30 new in America, sometimes they can get double that for specific good condition ones. You can get them for 10 each in countries they were made in. They're useful knives - wire cutter, bottle opener etc. They're made from powder metal and have a hard brittle composition which means they can shatter. Overall they're rather useful all round knives for 30 bucks. I like how they look most about them - specially bakelite ones.

Just came here to post it cuz it just came in. Initial thoughts and fucking around d with it, my only complaint is I wish the midback lock had a slight indent like the endura does. The three millimeters of dead space at the base of the blade is kinda weird, but meh. Sounds amazing to open and it feels solid as fuck. Razor sharp too.

Overall I'm impressed. This thing feels like a little fluid tank. My only complaint would be the lock indent, which isn't really a problem and some jumping above the pivot would be nice.

Might have to get more cold steel in the future.

Pm2 for comparison.
>>
>>31627359
meh... personally i think mil/tactical style knives sink much deeper on the autism scale.
>>
Could someone point me in the proper direction for a good solid work knife? I'm an electrician but I prefer a knife to strippers. I'm not to worried about price or whether it's fixed blade or assisted so long as it isn't super huge and can hold a nice edge since it will be running into a lot of copper and aluminum wire.

Factory edge is similar on level to the edge that the pm2, endura and zt 0450 came with, but it's not as solid a slicer as the Spyderco due to the grind style. It's retarded easy to close one handed, and the lock feels solid af. Thanks to the miracle of gym shorts, they plate doesn't catch too well, but it's smooth on open and close regardless.

This is a sweet little pocket kukri.

I'm not too familiar with higher end steel fixed blades honestly, I know benchmade had a smaller one called the desert Skinner that was s30v. I also imagine a candiru or izula would work for you if you would sharpen it occasionally as their 1095 is pretty solid.

>>
Just visited BladeHQ's shop. Got to hold a polished G10 Espada Large in CTS-XHP. I was skeptical of the Espada seeing as how it's such a meme knife on /ktg/ but now... I want one so bad. $200 seems like a lot for a regular folding knife, but I can honestly say I would pay that any day for it. Thing is built like a tank. The wave is the easiest way to open it because it's so difficult to open by hand. When closing it's also difficult but has a nice detent when you get about halfway down. Blade is thick, knife is lighter than I was expecting, and the handle is extremely ergonomic. It's basically a pocket sword.
I was seriously doubting of Cold Steel with how much shit talk I've seen throughout /ktg/'s lifetime but now I am finding myself wanting one. Badly.

>>31633590
Yes! Now I have a reason to not sleep! Also bull shit, you can argue wharncliffe vs leave all day, but the belly of the Spyderco paramilitary is more useful for slicing. I'll admit the yojimbo would allow for much easier sharpening, but it's geared towards self defense.

No, I'm just saying a sharp edge is a sharp edge if you know what you're doing. Aside from profile, the knives use identical materials and locks. Not saying the PM2 can't slice this. More-so that wharncliffe just looks better and the PM2 should only slice marginally better. Too many people put too much merit in profile for slicing prowess.

I could've cut the bacon just as well with an even weirder blade profile so long as the steel/edge were the same imo.

When people talk about the superiority in the slicing power of a blade with belly, you remind me of 10mm fanboys.

>implying you know shit about 10mm
>9mm glass wrist
>45 clown caliber

>implying you know shit about blade belly

Well, I used to hate spydercos ignorantly and purely because of Spyderhole.
>muh structural integrity
After first-hand experiencing all the fun deployment methods and a few drop tests, I had apologized and said I was wrong.
Then somebody asked about karambits. Imo, best karambit is a double edged one. I've seen how they work. A dual-edged karambit will cut while controlling/defending against hostile opponent. Some faggot who cut himself on a double edged one said the person asking about them would cut themselves like he did, but was obv an untrained complete mallninja retard who spun it to feel tacticool and slit his wrist like a tard. They went on about dagger illegality, karambit folders can't have a second edge, yada yada, they were mad I called their mtech karambits shit and called them clumsy for cutting themselves on one.

Also I write so much they want to tl;dr but dont in fear of looking less knowledgeable than myself.

Its w/e though. I'm mallninja af.
