Shame the SRK is near a decade older in design and made in the same city, ignoring the fact that Fallkniven was a CS distributor before they ever made a knife and their knives just happened to end up looking like a series of CS knives.
>>
>>31567641
So say I was choosing between the Spartan, raja, espada medium and voyager xl cuz I wanted to try a cold steel knife out. What would a cold steel fan recommend.

Also considering a dragonfly salt, Kershaw spoke and boker ak47 and that ecos wharncliffe.

I like the Spartan's blade shape but the handle makes it a bulky carry. The Large Espada is the best sized Espada in my opinion and actually carries better than the Spartan. I've always wanted a Rajah 1 or 2 but I've heard they're more novelty for some reason. Voyager and Recon 1 are some of CS's flagship products, so it really depends on what you're looking for specifically.

The Boker AK47 is also a great mainstay in the knife world. And everyone here pretty much loves Kershaw. Dunno if going with a Wharncliffe is the best for EDC unless you already have other traditional blade shapes.

Current collection is pic related.I'm mostly leaning towards the Raja, voyager and recon, thought the espada just looks comfy. I've only heard good things really about the ak47.

I've never been impressed by the Kershaws I have used, but I can't say anything negative about them really.

Mainly just wanted to try a cold steel for the hell of it.
>>
>>31567853
I want a Ti-Lite so much.
>>
>>31567968
Going off your collection I'd say you're looking a the right models for CS. Definitely get something over 4 inches since you've got everything else covered in your collection. The Code 4 would be more "traditional" and in keeping with your current Spydies and ZT but I'd say if you're trying out Cold Steel, go for what they're known for, overbuilt, large tactical knives. Watch some of their hilarious marketing videos and see what tickles your fancy.

First one I carry and use every day around the farm cutting bail twine or opening sacks of chicken feed or the like

Second one I use as a utility for cutting wires or chipping at wood to get a rope through it.

Third I use for harvesting small game and waterfowl.

These guys are 10 minutes from me, I've played with a few ratworx chain drive knives and they're essentially the same feel as an assist open knife. It's a pretty heavy knife, so when the blade locks back, it's got a little snap to it, but if you've ever used anything with an automatic or assist open, it feels just about the same.

The kabar fighting knife is a shadow of it's former self which has gone to shit through Chinese manufacturing and terrible QC, while the company relies on their namesake to swindle customers out of their money. And the zombie knives with dayglo colors you posted prove my point for me.
>>
>>31571017
The only issue I have with Crkt is the qc issues. I can admit that they have many solid knives and have stepped their game way up, with designs like the homefront. Just personally wary and not crazy about some of the designs, but that's personal preference.

>>31571056
Rat tail tang.
>>
So to the anon who was answering questions about cold steel and k in general, need me some opinions and thoughts.

Deciding between, the voyager tango xl, the rajah 2 and rajah 3.

Voyager and 3 fit my budget, but the 3 is a little small for the balls to the wall Shit that I was looking for and the voyager is a bit plain design. The raja 2 is over budget, but also had the pull opener and is fucking huge.

All are cts bd1, all are gonna be fun to fuck around with. Not familiar enough with cold steel to make a definite jump.
>>
>>31571011
Gib d2 kabar
>>
>>31571573
I'd recommend against anything XL unless you really just want a "show" knife with limited practicality, as you can't carry it comfortably in most pants. The rajah 3 still has the pocket deployment thumbdisc so perhaps that's your best bet. Unfortunately they don't make a large Rajah 3 that I'm aware of. Voyager isn't a bad choice either. Have you looked at the Spartan or Talwar?
>>
So I ship to boot camp in 26 days and my mos will be logistics. Any recommendations for a good edc folder. Price range about $200.
>>
>>31571749
Ivw looked at both and and again, this is mainly just to dick around with and be a generally excessive knife/try out cold steel. The rajah 3 is the medium/regular size of the three rajah. The Spartan I didn't care for the handle and the price I was able to get it at, the talwar, I didn't care for the blade shape and price, mainly price. My budget for this was 70, which the voyager xl and rajah 3 fit, but I would love to try the opener of the Raja3, and would love a massive knife like the xl and rajah 2.

>>31571820
Spyderco tenacious, easy to sharpen, easy to clean, reliable and strong lock.

Spyderco endura, better steel, easy to sharpen, harder to clean, stronger lock.

Benchmade minigrptilian, solid steel, strong lock, higher price than previous answers, not hard to clean really but not easy, fluid lock.

Spyderco military, huge Limerick folder, maxes out budget.

Benchmade Osborne 940, solid, sweet looking, light and reliable, same issues as minigriptillian

Crkt homefront. Expensive for aus 8, but a solid, reliable and easy as shit to maintain design.

Or get a multi tool.

I did and was considering it as I like the look and construction, but the price is nearly equal to that of a rajah 2 for me. The mini is in my range almost. Again the thumbdisk was more a secondary thought than being huge. I have a number of standard sized knives currently, so I'm going for something a bit different. Also the price is more so I don't go overboard than anything else. It can flex, but setting a limit helps to really reign my choices in.

>>31572021
Like the other anon said, a standalone knife is better. I should've said, a multitool and cheaper knife, that's on me. Mut isn't bad, bot worth the price to me. Don't personally think it'd be optimal for a logistics position, unless you want it pulling double duty. Better in my opinion would be a leatherman wave or something similar and a mid price knife. I'm partial to Gerber multi tools due to otf pliers, but to each their own.

i'm actually getting a cold steel Talwar 4 inch in coyote brown for a defensive knife,

i'll admit though, they are large and i feel like they are made to be shown more than used but fuck everything if they don't work to make a crackhead run off with his pipe between his legs when you whip it out

Same, also depending on the size of knife.

Ones like my redpoint is only tip down and that makes sense with the deployment. My gnome I vary depending on how I feel, because the clip can allow for better grip with the small size.

Carrying a pocket deploying knife tip up is the only way.

When you carry tip up, the opening mechanism is down furthest in the pocket and allows you to grab the knife in the most secure way to deploy it of it's not a pocket deployer.

Buck redpoint, smooth slide button lock, rubberized handles for non slip grip wet or dry, 420 hc steel blade. Nice knife, solid and reliable. Also very smooth and can open fast as Shit. The button allows you to swing it open like a benchmade, but your supposed to use the ribbed top, which is actually the bottom of the blade insert.

Bought it after a knife failed on me and nearly got my finger off. Comfy even in large hands and the pocket clip is different, but solid.

Persistence for scale. It looks slightly larger due to the clip position, but really it's almost identical in length.

Summer ended and now I'm back on campus with a 3.5" blade limit. Would carry it if I could. It went with me in front of cops in stores and military police on base. They're good enough that you'll see people on both sides, personally I don't like them.

I think they do decent as a machete, but a real machete is significantly better, but I HATE having to use one as a hatchet. They're just too weird and cumbersome to do camp axe type work.

Note that it depends heavily on where you live whether or not you will ever need a machete, but you will basically always need a camp axe for innawoods shit. When I'm in Vermont I just carry a machete and a camp axe because I can carry a bit of extra weight and I don't want to a) swing a kukri around for hours in the woods b) fumble around with a kukri for hours once I get to camp

In Missouri I just carry an axe.
>>
>>31577466
>They're just too weird and cumbersome to do camp axe type work

That's the main function I use mine for, I alternate between my hatchet and kukri
>>
>>31577476
It could definitely be because I haven't used it enough to be proficient, I took one on a couple trips and didn't like it and just went back to hatchet/machete which I've used since I was born.
>>
>>31577466
Machetes are pretty much worthless in the temperate woodlands of my country. For bushcraft I have a Gränsfors Bruk's axe and my grandfather's puukko. The kukri would be kept at my bedside since my guns need to be stored in the cuck locker and I want to be able to defend myself immediately if need arises. So I'm mainly asking in regards to it being used as a weapon in the confines of a small house.

I've got one, I like it a lot.

I got mine from baryonyxknife.com, small mom&pop website. Highly recommended, he'll offer a "special grade" option on a lot of the stuff he sells, where he will refine and improve the factory edge. He's also available via email and is pretty friendly/helpful. Sorry for the shill, but it's a pretty good source.

There's probably some pretty good competitive options out there, but you could drive yourself crazy looking at all of them. Condor generally presents a damn good value for the cost/quality.

Damascus is just two or metals with different corrosion rates forge welded together, it will always be equal to or worse than a mono-steel knife as in the modern age we don't require spreading out impurities or spreading out carbon across a whole billet.

>>31577784

Maximum poorfag is mora companion, I used it for years.
>>
>>31578660
>Damascus is just two or metals with different corrosion rates forge welded together,
That's what it's been known as since the 80's, originally it was another name for Wootz steel which is long gone.
>>
>>31578686

Well yes, but even wootz steel is shit compared to monosteels these days because the purpose of wootz is to even out the carbon in the metal allowing for more uniformity, as well as create carbide bands within the steel , a problem that doesn't need to be solved these days, and there have been recreations of wootz steel. I like the series from Niels Provos from the good camerawork and voiceover, though I'm sure there are more.
>>
>>31578797
Richard furrer has made it

Baltimore knife and sword has done it too.

It's very tricky to make and forge, but it's not a secret
>>
I love how this thread goes from tip up/down bait to discussing the existence of wootz steel.

To not just shit post, I understand the process of making wootz steel is significantly different to current steels, but had there been a comparison done to wootz? As in what would be a modern steel with relatively equal performance?

I imagine that would be a difficult comparison to some extent due to the carbon nanotubes in wootz, but it probably exists.
>>
>>31580026

Wootz steel is so inherently expensive to make that it wildly depends on the person making it, however, J. D. Verhoeven and many other scientists have tested various samples of wootz and find it, while excellent compared to most steels of its time, far weaker in edge mention, hardness, and toughness, in comparison to nearly all modern high carbon alloy steels such as O-1, or even 440c.
>>
>>31580106
Really? I mean it is somewhat unsurprising that even commonplace steels of our time would be better given our advances in processing and production, but I held some hope that, it's expensive nature aside, it would hold some relevance to something lower end at least because of how impressive it was at the time. Makes sense though.

You mean like pick related? Isn't double sided, so technically a hatchet, but still. Crkt birler. Trying to understand what you mean by classic aesthetics. Assuming you mean wood and steel and preferably native looking?
>>
>>31582196

a knife is made to cut
if a workhorse knife isnt meant to be sharpened it defeats the entire purpose for why the knife was made.

it was made to cut things.

and if you dont get the most out of a fine edge with the tools around you, is it really worth it.

just a thought, this is why edge angles exist. if you want a nice relief edge and thick stock to your edge go to like 24 degrees and it will last longer.
>>
>>31582196
Not condor, but you get out of your tools what you out in, most of the time. There are always some miracle Chinese penny machetes and some really shitty 20 dollar machetes, but with axes and similar cutting tools, you get out of them what you put in.

Also amount of sharpening really doesn't matter within normal means. Don't just sit with it on a belt grinder for hours obviously, but sharpen it when it seems to dull or generally needs maintenance.

thats fair but im half native american so im around 6'6 and im a big guy at that. to be honest smaller knives look more ridiculous on my frame. i just enjoy fixed blades and i want one for the occasion that i wake up in the morning and feel like carrying one. more often than not my spyderco will be my actual edc
>>
>>31586054
ive tried just about every higher end production brand at least once i used to have a whole slew of knives but recently i sold all junk and gt a benchmade 162 (absolute sex of a knife never imagined a better knife in dreams) an izulat and i held on to one of my bench made folders and i feel set for anything. never been so satisfied with my collection and i cant even call it a collection anymore idk quality over quantity, and real quality at that. i dont own any knives anymore without lifetime you break it we buy it warranties. the warranty on whatever you gets as important as checking all the boxes on the blade. look into esee knive , the camp lore, the lazer strike, the 3, all sound like what youre looking for
>>
>>31586126
and all have outstanding warranties. you can cut an esee in half on purpose with a welder and send them a recording of you doing it and theyll replace it with a smile

Go for whatever you want, but might I suggest one of cold steels massive folders just for the fuck of it? Rajah 2 is a folding machete essentially, and the voyagers easily have around 6 inches of useable blade. If you like Akbar the most go for that, if you want something with more reusable build, go for esee.

Also most people look odd wearing a fixed blade around.

I agree it's not a rat tail but it is a stick tang and it does have 90 degree junctions at the blade which is definitely not ideal, even a slight radius will increase the strength there a fair bit.

IMO the grind layout is horrible but that's from the perspective of someone who dislikes the sharpened prybars commonly available today. For me to consider one I'd ditch the fuller, move the grind up to at least 3/4 high and remove the dead spot in front of the handle, move the edge almost all the way back with just a small sharpening choil.

>>
>>31577448
I mean... They're machetes with a recurve. Whether or not the recurve affects cutting performance depends on the steel, the sharpness, the grind, the job, and ofc the user. I'm a fan of recurves as far as aesthetics so I'd be more inclined to get one than a straight-bladed machete but that's just me.
If you like it, it's not a meme.
>>
>>31587359
It's the BM I would pick, although I would choose the Al scales.
>>
>>31581208
>serrated
I don't wanna start a meme war but let's just say field sharpening your knife will be easier when it's not serrated. Another possible meme war started but don't get a stick/rat tail tang. Go for a Buck or an ESEE if you're hurting for a fixed blade. The 119 is classy as fuck and Buck is just classic, but I've heard ESEE makes real nice fixed blades.
>>
>>31587960

speaking of serration what is better for self defense? what would cut through leather of something thick?
maybe just brute intimidation?
>>
>>31581665
Probably going to piss off some people but I'll say it anyway. Don't get a karambit.
The blade shape and tang ring make the design impractical/inefficient for regular knife work (cutting wood, rope, boxes, tape) and since it curves inwards, much harder to sharpen. Karambits are really only good for one purpose; grappling fighting styles. If that's what you prefer then I guess a karambit is okay, but you won't be able to do much very easily/comfortably with it. You should still be able to get the job done in a fight with just a curvier folder or short fixed blade that is more practical for EDC knife work.
>>
>>31587976
Brute intimidation I'd say a Cold Steel Espada/Talwar XL or maybe a really long fixed blade/machete.
Serrations would definitely not cut leather in a combat situation unless you saw back and forth. A good sharp plain edge will slice through leather faster, cleaner, and deeper.
In all honesty, knives suck for self defense. But if you're just choosing between serrated or not, I'd go with not. If you want to know how to use your knife for self defense, watch some law enforcement training videos on YouTube or take some self defense classes. Hands-off styles will help you keep your enemy at bay with a knife better I suppose. But if you're already on the ground, grappling techniques work better so I'd say learn a bit of both and mix and match when the time comes. Really any knife that you can deploy easily/smoothly and has agility and a razor sharp edge with decent length (3"-5") will do you better for self defense than just your fists.
>>
>>31587359
It's a beauty, but the handle is easily damaged. Steel is good though.
>>
>>31567757
Is that knife any good? I kinda want one for the lels.

>>31588020

>>
>>31588831

>Karambits are really only good for one purpose; grappling fighting styles.

Tell that to the rice folk who use it as a utility knife.

The karambit is a tool first and foremost, even weaponized variations (see bottom) remain weaponized tools. SE Asian martial arts only adopted the karambit because lots of people had one, not because it's some mystical flip ninja design.

I have both versions of the 6inch. It's an incredible defensive knife.

I would say, from a purely tactical standpoint, the Zy-Ex version is much better. It's extremely grippy, and light. I think a lighter frame for a piercing stiletto is better than a heavier one. That being said, the aluminum body version just feels absolutely amazing. It's extremely pretty, as well. Gunmetal greys and brushed steel, it's a beauty of a knife. It's worth it, to me, despite it being $120+, to put it in a collectors box.

Some people cry about the size of the 6 inch version, I honestly don't see any drawbacks to the size. The handle length just gives you more control, the blade length gives you exceptional reach, it's perfect. The 4inch blade is way too short for the purpose of this dagger. It's a swift poker/surprise knife. Drag it out of the pocket, get a few quick jabs in, move away and bait.

Anyone using these for EDC is retarded, they're purpose built murder weapons.

tl;dr: buy one

Hey man. What model is that Benchmade (or PCC) and would you ever do consider letting it go? Really digging it.
>>
>>31592501
>i only hesitate getting another because im a lefty but there is that flipper for the pocket

I would say it's more appropriate to the design of the knife to deploy it using the pocket catch. It's made to be yanked out in a surprise defensive maneuver. If you already have it out, then deploy it with the thumb stud, you're kind of giving it away before it has a chance to be useful.

You lose some 'fun' value, though, definitely. Playing around with it in the house, deploying it with the stud, is great. It does suck how it's not ambi, sorry man.

The Zy-Ex model is only like $50 on amazon right now. I think you should consider it again.

>>
>>31592646
You can get some leverage on it, considering the length of the blade its self, so there is MINOR side-to-side play if you really give it a good jostle from the tip (which is hard to do because of how thin it is). I'm stressing minor here, you basically would have to use pliers to grab it in any functional way. In normal practice, though, nothing. It's tight, all the tolerances are spot-on.
