AK General /akg/
Type 86S Edition
>Thread #86

Old thread here >>31581347

What should my first AK be?

I'm hasguns, but just an old Mauser. I want a solid semi-auto that won't break the bank and can maybe be upgraded later on down the road. The Vz. 58 seems like an interesting option, (though not technically an AK) but I'm not sure where I'd find one and it seems like it could be kind of expensive.

tl; dr: Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope

Fuck yeah, the Type 86S kicks ass. I was at the range one time and a guy had one of those and he let me shoot it and it was loads of fun. I'm not big on foregrips and I wish there was a mini-handguard instead of just the foregrip but it was awesome regardless. Guy was like 40 and said he likes it because he can still properly use the raised sights while wearing a gasmask.

I just wish they made one in .308 so I can use a straight-wall mag and get that maximum firepower. Bullpups with the AK's 'banana clip' mags can be difficult to reload without hitting the pistol grip if you're not very familiar with it.
>>
Can anybody tell me the difference between the SLR-104FR and the SLR-104 31?
>>
>>31589039
FR indicates the polymer folding stock, while the 31 has the old style metal triangle stock.
>>
Anyone know if there are any good drum mags on the market? I've only seen the worst Korean ones up to now and I feel like an rpk isn't complete without one
>>
>>31589093
Thanks for the last payment by the way.
>>
>>31589066
Thanks, I've been trying to figure this out, but I guess I'm bad at googling.

Further question: Are Magpul AK accessories any good? They seem pretty damn expensive, but I've never used them before.
>>
I somewhat want an AK but "assault weapons" are banned if they fire a cartridge with a case length less than 40mm.
Should I go with a non-scary, sporting variation or SKS,
get some meme caliber or .308
or stick with .223?

You can find top-loading drums for around $250. The Russian and Romy ones are apparently very reliable.
>>
>>31588854
Pick what you want, man. You can do what most people did when starting out with semiautos and buy a whole and complete firearm, then go from there.

Don't do what I did, which was believe I could make a blank receiver into a working one and then test fire while holding it in my hands

It blew my gun apart.
>>
>>31588854
wasr or Palmetto state armory AK gen 2. both similarly priced, and both quite reliable.
the PSA ak is american made and seems like the first all US made ak that doesn't have issues.
the Century C39V2 is a decent enough gun (also american made), but some of the parts that should have been forged were cast, and that can be problematic in lifespan of the part.
all of the guns I listed could be considered mid priced now. there are cheaper AK's out there, but their quality is not great. There are better ak's out there, but for your first gun it's OK to buy a mid priced gun.
hope that helped.
also, yes a VZ58 is a great gun, but like you said not an ak. I could easily recommend buying one.

Damn famn, you're probably pretty starved for options. I'd guess your best bet would be a vepr or other sporter AK in 5.56 or 7.62x51. I'd go with x51 of there are magazine limits so it would be more of a battle rifle
Alternatively you could befriend your local serb mobster
Though I know nothing about your local laws/restrictions, just my $.02

Why are Chinese AKs so interesting? They're so weird and unique compared to their Soviet counterparts. It's cool seeing how the Type 56 was designed in a Chinese bubble with little Soviet influence, and how the stamped Type 56 differs from the Soviet AKM

I don't know how people don't understand this yet
>BUDGET
What is your budget? Nobody knows what you consider expensive or what is affordable to you. To me, a VZ58 is about par for the course at $1000, but to some people that's expensive and to other people that's chump change.

Overall, VZs are decent rifles, but the folding stocks suck for your face (never fired a full stock, so I can't tell you) and the majority of the mystique to it is that it's not an AK but it looks like one. They're a cool rifle, sure, but to me they were only a cool rifle worth picking up when they were $400 when Century was still building them.

You're at the worst time possible to come into the AK market with this upcoming election and the overall shortage caused by the Russian import ban and several overseas companies scaling back their civilian works to focus on military production in the Middle East. WASRs are way more expensive than they should be and anything above them is damn near impossible to find.

If you can afford to get a DDI or an Arsenal, then get one. They're both great rifles that'll treat you well.

>>31590924
I just like them because they're so beautiful. I hate hooded front sights on most other rifles, but it just looks so right on the Type 56. The furniture is also sexy as hell (really like the way they did the vent holes) and the steel bolt carrier with no finish just stands out so well as an iconic AK trait.
>>
>>31590924
I like the furniture on the GSAD imports a lot. I've wanted a Clayco folder for quite awhile but would force myself to sell my polytech in exchange, tough choice.

Kinda curious why we don't see more surplus Chinese shit on the market, mostly just commercial

My PM md.63 is a parts kit build done by Two Rivers Arms. I'm not sure if it was done on special order by the previous owner (a gun shop in TX) or if they ever offered parts kits builds (I know they used to offer PM md.63 Iraqi Army models) as standard.

>>31592479
With folding stocks you're supposed to fold the stock, wrap the sling around the side, and tension as much as you possibly can, then unfold the stock. It looks incredibly aesthetic as well as gets the sling out of the way.

>>
>>31592923
Arms of America, whatacountry, rguns. There are some more that I'm forgetting along with a number of smaller ones.
>>
So I've been offered to trade my StG-58 build for an SGL-31. I've got about $1200 into the gun on my end (parts and mags with the price of the kit) and they've been selling for around $1500 recently, and although I love my FAL I'm really tempted to do it for a legitimate Izhmash AK74. He'd be including half dozen mags (surplus plums and (10)s) and I'd be including 6 Belgian mags. I'd also probably be selling off the remainder of my 7.62x51 ammo as my FAL is my only gun in that caliber.

WHAT DO? I'm very conflicted on this. In one hand I rarely shoot my FAL anymore but on the other it's still a historically interesting gun and that alone is why I wanted one in the first place. But another 5.45 gun would be neat, especially one from Izhmash.

I grew up shooting and watching war movies with my dad since I was like four

My interest in slavshit came from two different areas:
>both of my parents are children of Dutch immigrants and I grew up reading all kinds of books about the Boers in South Africa because I have distant family in SA and ancestors who were in the Boer Wars, and my interest in the Boers grew into an interest in South Africa in general, and then my interest in South Africa grew into a massive interest in the Border Wars when I was 12 or so and the communist supplied weapons of the "bad guys".
>I grew up shooting this Chinese AK from when I was like 8 years old because it looked cooler than my dad's ARs. I used to just take his AK out of the safe and go shoot in the woods out back whenever I wanted once my parents trusted me not to be a retard. I grew up shooting slavshit and it's stuck with me.

I only got into 5.45 in early-mid 2014 though and I regret not getting into it earlier.

How come if you send your receiver and parts kit to a gun smith to have it built they have to ship it to an FFL and go through all the paperwork? If you already own the receiver and it's complete how is that manufacturing a firearm?

Yes, unless they don't want to, or you have laws in your state that prohibit it.
>>
>>31597624
I saw that it was fleet farm, that they were in 5.45x39, and that they were very basically, rear-end converted.

I also know that you had to find them in stores, that they were based in the upper midwest, and that even if you had the link, you couldn't buy them online.

Clearance rifles are an exception, not the rule, so good luck finding anything like that, especially in the current market.

Can someone please enlighten me about the different gorka manufacturers?
Which are good, which to avoid, that sort of thing.

and yes I know there are gear generals and maybe even camo generals, but some of those guys seem like such faggots a lot of the time.

Is 500$ a good price for a pre ban polish AK74 tantal? condition looks good on it but didn't get to disassemble the rifle to check the internals. Anything specific I should look for when buying an AK?

been looking into them for a bit now; BARS is on approximately the same level as SSO/SPOSN. splav is a higher tier than both. generally don't bother with the other manufacturers

you can find surplus stuff which isn't necessarily branded; just have to know what to look for. if i wasn't in the subtropics I would consider a full afghanka set

also, be careful when washing because the dye in the cotton can fade
>spot cleaning > hand wash/air dry > washing machine on cold/air dry

sounds like free firewood to me
>or false imprisonment, if you want to play victim
>>31603398
$500 is a price which would make me very concerned. least you're going to pay for an acceptable entry-level AK rifle at this time is $700. current market price for a WASR is floating around $750

There's a reason why they have signs outside that say assaulting a postal service employee is a felony. Lol, they get away with some shit because of that.

That looks like a variant in the digiflora family that is being rolled out. Not sure if it's even findable to buy.

If you want something Russian in a similar palette, look up SURPAT camo.
