I thought I read that PSA imported trunnions, not positive though. Probably just a different business strategy and/or DDI has the some infrastructure to do the trunnions that PSA lacks the interest of investing in. I kind of lose interest at that point

I find their business strategies much much more interesting then their rifles. DDI especially is curious in how they market and the tone they want to portray about their company.

Ok /akg/

Let's talk about handguards.

In general, do you prefer the aesthetics of vented or non-vented? Do you care if your handguards are period correct? Have you ever bought and sold multiple sets searching for the perfect look?

With my krinker I used vented because I think vented looks better on these. It's a Bulgarian dressed as a Russian so I didn't care about any kind of correctness.

With my project builds whatever is correct is whatever looks best to me. I won't be able to enjoy it unless it's "correct."
>>
>>31582637
I like donkey dick and cheese grater. Just my personal preference.

Not on every gun, but the dream is to have a 47 triangle folder with those and maybe a plum pistol grip.

Mine too, I simply wanted it to look as close to a late 80s rifle as I could without needing to replace parts that need a press and stuff like that. That's cool enough to me. If I ever get around to starting to build kits (I'm simply waiting to get out of my apartment so I have room for the tools I'll need) then I'll be hyper autistic and want every single tiny detail to be as correct as possible.

>>

From what I've heard, the kits they used are quality hungarian parts, but the barrel is too soft so you will have a shortened lifespan for them. I was all set to buy one until I learned that.

I'm well aware it isn't 100% correct, all I've done to it is put a period correct muzzle brake and matte plum furniture with a 1988 dated sling. It's still just an SLR 104.

>>31583743
>hand guards most important
No, but they're the easiest to get without needing a press.
>doesn't want to replace barrels components
I'd love to but I don't have a press or have room for a press. At that point I'd might as well just pick up one of the late 80s kits that are out there for around $700ish and just have it built.
>doesn't just install laminate, would be correct
I've got wood, I just haven't had it on the gun in a long time as I like polymer better on 74s.
>afghanistan
>plum
What are you implying? Plum AKs were in Afghanistan in the last few years of the war. They weren't nearly as common as wood but they certainly were there, especially in late 1988 into early 1989 when the war ended.
>>
>>31583777
ESS barrels were used in these. It's fairly common knowledge (in the gun community) that they are softer than what they should be. They are made of 4140 chromoly which is great for other applications, but less than ideal for a gun barrel.
>>
>>31583798
nah, there's no problem with chrome lining
it IS better than unlined, but people will dismiss rifles based on only that (worse yet when it's nitrided or has other treatment that isn't CL)
that's what I have a problem with

His build is perfectly correct, Izhmash started dimpling in '85. But factories being what they are, there are some pinned barrel components up until the early production years of the AK-74M, of which pinned examples exist.

I don't know how consistent it is for AK100 series, Rob Ski has some photos on his site of an issued AK103 with pinned components.

>>31584257
That's interesting. Come to think of it you never really see SAM7SFs with cleaning rods installed. I guess the stock latch spring is in a vulnerable position. When you shoot and AK the cleaning rod jolts back and forth with considerable force. If you look on the bottom of a well used AK-74 muzzle brake you can actually see peening where the cleaning rod has struck it. I guess it can do the same thing in the opposite direction and damage the spring. Kind of seems like it could have been designed to avoid that.

I've never seen a retaining latch in this position before, mounted on the right like that. Probably necessary to allow for a milled receiver to take and secure a folding stock.

I guess the design makes it so the rifle can't take a full sized cleaning rod.

I don't think it's a terrible purchase. Aside from the weak barrel, the rest of the rifle is combloc. If that ess barrel isn't bump fired or allowed to get real fucking hot it will last 8-10 k rounds. At that point replacing it with a combloc barrel seems trivial.

For end of days senerio look elsewhere, for the occasional shooter, collector, or truck gun it's a great price. If I could go back to 2010 I would buy a whole truck load of amd's for $350. Unused ones can fetch more then a grand on gun joker.

Original gun cost around 2k with mags and other accessories included.
Tax stamp was 200.
All the parts needed (furniture, authentic stock, FCG, dust cover/trunnion assembly, muzzle device, etc) were around 1-2k I don't remember.
Gunsmithing service was around 3k (note: I could've gone way waaaaay cheaper on this, down to about 800, but I told him to TAKE YOUR TIME DO IT RIGHT GO BIG OR GO HOME so I splurged admittedly too much on this).
I forget where the rest came from. Haven't tallied it up in literally two years and doing so is not good for my health.

In short, it's not a $9000 gun. It is not worth $9000. No one will ever buy it for $9000. $9000 is simply what I've dumped into it en grosse.
>>
>>31585613

>>
>>31585699
Oh, also, it's not entirely ridiculous. It's not like he's just cutting the barrel and drilling a new gas port, he's basically had to rebuild and fabricate an entirely new gun from a hodgepodge of parts. There's a shit ton of labor involved from hand fitting to machining to straight up creating an entirely new gas system in order to keep the handguards removable so that I can swap them to polymer.

Think of it like any other contractor or craftsman job.

the the steel bolt carriers in the white aren't crappy
several countries used them to good effect, just keep it oiled

>>
I clean my gun meticulously and grease up good with lots of teflon extra slick grease.

Does this increase the risk of peening?
Why is peening bad?
>>
>>31586206
It's not going to explode because it's cast but I assure you it's weaker than a forged carrier. Especially if it's the one with the lightening cuts up top. There have been pictures of them breaking right at those cuts.

I'm pretty sure you could just buy a spare yugo carrier and it would be fine. It's not real stainless but it doesn't seem like many people complain about them rusting. And since it's just raw steel, if it does rust, you don't have to worry about harming the finish, so you can just hit it with a wire brush and clean it right up.
>>
>>31586271
No.
Because it changes the dimensions of parts which may or may not become hazardous or compromised later. But probably not.
>>
Should I go with a palm swell or a donkey dong on my soon to be AMD65? Also, what is a good brand for side rails and what Russian optic should I get? Where do you buy slant brakes?
>>
>>31586268
C39V2, I got it for $700. There is a LOT of hate on it from /k/ because of cast parts if I understood correctly but all the research I've done suggests that only the version 1 was crap. Everyone seems to love the V2, except on /k/. I don't get it.
Anyway, I'm new to AK's obviously and figured I'd just drop in an upgraded bolt carrier like you can do with an AR but that doesn't seem to be how things are done with AK's.
>>
>>31586271
Peening where? Why would that increase the risk? If it's going to peen it will do it with or without the grease. Don't sweat it, there's nothing wrong with keeping your gun clean, you don't need to be like the ARfags who consider mistreating their guns a badge of honor.
>>
>>31586304
C39v2s are g2g but for some reason the RAS47s fall apart. Just be cautious.
>>
>>31586280
Well, that's a very good point. So I should keep an eye on the cuts in the gas tube part of the bolt carrier? That makes more sense, a lot of sense actually. I thought the lightning cuts people were talking about were the scallops in the milled receiver. This actually clears things up a lot.

Most of the time yes, when people talk about lightening cuts with AKs they usually mean the scallops on the sides, which are there to reduce weight. But those cuts on the bolt carrier are also for the purpose of lightening it. Keep an eye on those cuts for hairline cracks, if you see a crack then it's only a matter of round count until a catastrophic failure. Honestly, those lightening cuts aren't a bad idea but you need a strong bolt carrier to back it up, so keep an eye on them.
>>
I'd like to buy my first AK in the next month, don't know much about them yet but it seems like most of the cheapest ones are from Century and I've heard mixed reviews about them. I don't have a huge budget, but don't mind paying a bit more for quality, so what would the next step up be?
>>
>>31586312
It seems a lot of people barely lube or clean their AK's meanwhile I'm reducing the friction of all the parts so it stands to reason bolt velocity might increase, or at least that's where the question was coming from but you've answered it so thank you. I've noticed a shiny square on the back of the carrier where it hits the back of the receiver. I guess that's normal, I also read it's normal for the spur on the back to deform a little which is just bizarre for that to be normal, like AK's just beat themselves to death.

Oh I see where you're coming from, but I doubt it makes a big enough difference to be concerned. As long as your rifle is properly gassed and the parts are properly made it shouldn't be a problem at all. A little bit of deformation in those areas is perfectly normal, if it becomes excessive then there is a problem that needs diagnosing. Even fantastically made AKs will beat themselves up when you shoot them. The finish on the bolt carrier is pretty much toast after the first 200 rounds. It's all part of the experience.

I've been asking and if you look through the last 20 posts or so, Chimps has enlightened me that the concern with the C39V2 is centered around the possibility that the weight reducing cut outs in the bolt carrier could potentially crack due to them being a weak spot and the bolt carrier being cast instead of milled.
That's if I got that right?
Also, the cast bolt carrier is something that some people may have had issues with it being soft or showing wear? I'm not sure.

I'm not saying it's a bad gun, I got one for $700 because it seemed like a deal and I never had an AK. The online reviews seem to be overwhelmingly positive as a whole too, see below but if I had it to do over, I'd spend a few hundred more and get an Arsenal. Honestly, didn't think I would enjoy shooting an AK so much but I like it a lot more than my AR. It's cheaper to shoot, easier to clean and the irons are more fun to shoot with.

"What is it like to fire an AR-15? It’s horrifying, menacing and very very loud.

It felt to me like a bazooka — and sounded like a cannon.

But mostly, I was just terrified.

Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection).

The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable."

Here's the after pic. The buttstock and handguard are around the same color IRL but it could be just slightly darker, but it still looks pretty good.

So much more sex than RAS 47-tier Americunt wood.

Word of advice, leave the slant brake, you'll appreciate it's lightness, and the fact that it allows you to mount your bayonet.

Do throw some optics on it, preferably something delightfully slavy.

I didn't use the buttstock, I had a spare that happened to match and already had a trapdoor. The stocks that came on the old WASR 10/63's also match quite well.

pretty good deal.

sure just make sure you reseal it with something like linseed oil, or weatherseal. just dont start too agressive with the sandpaper. there used to be a paint stripping solution that would take damn near all finishes off without fucking up the wood like brake fluid does. ask at a paint store for the best stripper they have.

or put magpul furniture on it if you like that stuff.

I wanna learn a bunch more about the platform. All my knowledge comes from my Fudd father who never respected aks. His experience begins and ends in the 80s with one case he bought shot and sold.
