AR newbie here trying to get an understanding of how everything comes together. So I've read up on overgassing due to barrel length and gas system but wondering about buffer systems.

Carbine buffer systems have largely replaced rifle because of the ability to have collapsible stocks. But can Can a rifle buffer work in both midlength and carbine length gas systems? Would it have problems cycling weaker 223 loads??

i'm putting together my first and possibly only AR.
with this first upper i'm going with a 16" barrel and a 0-4x optic.
the idea is a rifle i can carry around, maneuver in the brush, get on target quick but still be able to reach out a little more than with a short barrel.
my question to you folks is how much do you personally feel that the handguard length effects the speed, balance and overall weight of the gun? and how much of an issue is burning yourself on a hot, uncovered barrel if you have to sling the rifle and move around with it? 9.2", 12", and 14.5" are my options. i wouldn't be putting more than a light and possibly a grip on it.

My brother has one. Honestly for $600 it not bad. You even have the option to add the forward assist and dust cover. The m&p sport doesn't even have the places for them. I don't have any experience with the ruger 556. Some things to note are the bolt and trigger aren't from a 6920. As far as I know only the lower is. The bbl isn't chrome lined. There's no rail numbering on the top of the upper.
