Dumb question but do surplus FCG need any special fitting or modification to fit in a semi-auto AK?

Nevermind, answered my question, fucking specific import bans. We ought to push for removal of the 89 import ban. Doing so would kick the legs out from under almost all of the bans since as they all rely on its language.

At my gun show (Saxet anyone?) and I'm looking for a good buy on an AK. Anyone have the list of makes that don't suck? Might walk out with a WASR today since everything else are Century.
>>
>>31522067
Nearly everything that's not IO, RAS, C39. Get a set of go/nogo gauges. Look for buffers, as they can hide signs the gun is out of spec.
>>
>>31522067
If you find an IO with the "QC Inspected" sticker, those are usually good to go. They're a steal. Don't buy an IO without that sticker though.

Yeah, I bought a few for my N-pap. They're nice, but the magwell fitting on my rifle was a bit crap, so I had to dremel them. Took me about 5minutes for each magazine. But other than that they seem to be good.

On a sidenote, bulgarian metal mags fit perfectly on my rifle, almost like it was made just for them.

Too bad there's no major variations between vzs, because it makes it hard to have much conversation about them that warrants a dedicated thread.
I wish the vz family of guns had even 25% the diversity of the aks you can buy. Basically a couple calibers, and a couple barrel length options, otherwise it's mostly just aftermarket plastic etc.

The wider groups are me being a faggot and not applying fundamentals of marksmanship; circled ones are more relevant to the performance of the rifle. I'd estimate it's about 1.5-2MOA.

The only wear visible was from ejection, pic related.
>>
>>31523814
At some point physics takes over and hampers the AK's accuracy.

>All that shit rattling around in contact with the barrel
>>
>>31523841
>literally a 2 inch group at 25yd

>>31523848
I put down close to actual 2moa accuracy last time I shot my SLR, I'll have to take pics next time I take it shooting or something
>>
>>31521816
They're the same as yugo BHO mags, just new production.

>>31522427
Ironically yugo mags don't fit yugo guns... a lot of mags don't. On my PAP pistol only Korean mags would fit.
>>
>>31523848
Also note I was shooting with a micro red dot. I can't make out features on the target at that range, just holding at a certain spot relative to edge of the backer.

Zeroed at 25yds so I was holding about 6" low for 100yds.

If it was in a lead sled you might get 1.5MOA.

>>
>>31523907
Your lack of proper stances doesn't change that you had a 2 inch group at 25 yards. And the 100 yard groups are much bigger than 2moa. You can't just claim whatever you want after shooting groups that don't support your claim. Like I'm not tryna fuck with you but there is no evidence I see to put it anywhere close to 1.5moa
>>
>>31523930
Yeah, that's why I /estimate/ 2MOA. Not claiming anything.

Take this data with a grain of salt. I'm still learning and I hope to help others along the way.
>>
>>31524070
Grab a cheap bag or some sort of rest and just bench it at 25 yards, easiest way to go about it
>>
>>31523787
...so this is the power...of free floating...

You need to put a magnified optic on there and shoot from a rest to get a good idea of the true mechanical accuracy of the rifle

A few notes about the rifle:
>handguard is comfy and will let you fulfill your TOB fantasies
>super ergonomic, could not find an uncomfortable position or way to hold it, even as a southpaw
>handguard is very well isolated from heat, as it is free floating and far enough away from the barrel
>well balanced
>safety is stiff but should easily break in, parts in general are TIGHT

Will report back if it KBs or something, I've looked it over well and don't have any cause for concern.

It didn't have any issues with Croat BHO mags or the MOE PMAG it shipped with. Bakes will be tested in a few weeks.

>>31524121
roger. at the end of the day I had a good time. Will go get more practice.
>>31524189
yup.

It doesn't contact the handguard at rest, but there's only about 2mm of space between the gas block and the handguard (pic related). I can make them contact by moving the barrel with two fingers. The muzzle device it ships with isn't directionally biased, but if it were they would certainly contact. Does it matter? Maybe? Perhaps a better question is: Would the bullet leave the barrel before the barrel whipped into the handguard and introduced weird harmonic properties? I don't know. Perhaps a richfag can take slow motion video and answer that. In the meantime I'll look for wear in that area. I don't see any now, and I probably won't with this muzzle device. No idea why they made the tolerances that tight.

With regards to a bipod, however, the upper/handguard is so damn rigid that it would never be an issue. I doubt doing pushups would bend it even 2mm.

>self identified Vietnam Vet gave me an earful for using a red dot at 100yds then we talked about his AK rifles, NFA stuff, and I recommended him to the NFA shoot
>>
>>31523012

I have a pso-1. It's orange. Is there a problem with these? Like, it's really fucking orange looking out of it.
>>
>>31524422
The gas from the discharged round won't enter the muzzle brake in any significant amount until the bullet has left the barrel

That's what they do with the extra iodine orange, seal it in the optic for safe keeping
>fucking russians and their orange everything

Nah, it's a filter. You can remove it.
>>
>>31524513
The barrel begins to oscillate/resonate before the round exits though, correct? The extent of which this happens depends on the barrel profile and composition (also determines natural frequency). It probably reaches peak oscillation around the time the round exits, provided the barrel is designed for a reasonable burn rate (97-99%), and then the response of the brake will begin to take over at which point it doesn't matter too much. Any oscillation in the barrel should dampen before the next round is capable of being fired, else the barrel would be unstable (this probably determines the minimum requirement for rigidity).

Huh, pic was flipped for some reason. They are from a complete AK-74 take-off set, I have the stock and laminate grip in a drawer. They are not refinished. A couple scuffs and scratches but otherwise great condition.

I'd really like to find a nice non-vented set. My current set is good but the color isn't exactly my preference. Looks funky in sunlight.

to the anon looking for feedback on the DI Optical FC1, a few notes:
>I have astigmatism which makes various red dots look fucked up to varying degrees, but this one is a perfect dot always
>it's extremely compact, too compact
>no issues with mount on 7.62x39
>torqued the sight on by hand and had no loss of zero or screws walking out (may loctite later)
>due to the nature of the prism, you can see the emitter from the front, and you can also see the dot from the front
>auto shutoff works (~10hrs)

i'm just giving you a hard time, but it caught my eye. What receiver did you build it on, and what barrel? Feel free to post pics however you like.

ah, much better pic. The palm swell looks kind of rounded off, do you think it could have been arsenal refinished? Mine is really quite square.

beautiful. why did you go with that rail over a traditional one though? does it provide a better lockup?

looks good on 100 series too, imo, but I went for a PK-A (in the mail, super hype). Coolest part about the obzor is that it has legitimate advantages over other dual illuminated optics, I love the brightness adjustment and filter options.

Can you see a seam where it's clearly independent of the objective lens? It probably has some kind of thread locker on it. Did you get it from someone in the US, or was it imported directly? May help to determine what kind of locker it has, and how we can remove it

I would stay out of 5.45 unless you have money to burn right now. There really isn't a good option besides an SLR, SGL, DDI, or maybe a kit build.

5.45 is uniquely vulnerable to new import restrictions/sanctions. Oddly, it's a good time to jump in if you have a lot of money. People are getting out of the caliber and trying to dump rifles, ammo, and accessories in bundles for a lump sum.

oh, nice. so it looks to be the same one in this link:
https://www.apexgunparts.com/romanian-psl-fpk-7-62x54r-posp-scope-filter-amber-nos.html
See how tall the actual piece is? It might be glued from the back edge. I've been surfing around with terms like "psl scope filter". It looks like apex just taped theirs on, but yours is glued.

Your best angle of attack is probably to observe the rear side and look for openings.

Worst case scenario, tape off the part of your scope you don't want to scratch and twist it off with vice grips. Best of luck, I'm going to call it a night.

If you feel unsure about the next step, sleep on it.

I bought a James River Armory Bulgarian '74 last week.
When I received it, I couldn't insert any mags into it.
I took it to my gunsmith and he filed some of the magwell conversion rail thingamajigs so mags could be inserted.
Now the mags lock out of alignment with the barrel, and letting the bolt go home on a live round causes it to get jammed up an inch from the trunnion, and it takes an extreme amount of force to get it unstuck.
The cases are scraped and mauled from the chamber, and (alarmingly) the primer is slightly struck.

Basically, don't buy one of these.

Up to you my man. Nice laminate is expensive, that polish set is a good deal.

if you're like me you will buy and sell a few sets until you find the one that is perfect for the rifle in your eyes
>>
>>31529671
How expensive does soviet laminate go for? Also is there a reason it seems that people are only really selling sets with the lightning ak74 style cut in the stocks?
>>
>>31529608
you fail
>>
>>31529685
depends, refinished sets are cheaper but don't always look "correct."

AKM handguards are both vented, AK74 handguards only the upper is vented, if at all. AK74 lower handguards also has a tension spring in the back.
>>
>>31529713
I was talking about in the rear stock there is a gash in 74 stocks but it is solid in AKM stocks. I never noticed the thing about the vents on the bottom fore grip though.

I think I might just try this polish kit for now, all else fails I'll use steel mags.
>>
>>31529736
Yeah, i was just listing some differences between AKM and AK74 furniture. The lightning cut in the stock is another. Once you notice these things you can't unsee them. That polish set will do you just fine.
>>
how much truth is there to the aks durability and reliability? in a shtf scenario which would be the least likely to break or malfunction in some way? the ar or the ak?

The design of the ak is just simpler in general, there's less to go wrong with it. These rifles don't have the reputation they do for nothing.

Just have to make sure it's a quality AK, not a shitty I.O or some other garbage.

These rifles are literally shot until their handguards bust into flames and they keep going.

AK's can malfunction like any other rifle, and indeed are less closed-off to the environment than an AR. The big difference is the speed at which the rifle can be brought up once it goes down. AK field strip speed is unparalleled, and everything is easily accessible. Dip it in water at most and you're good. The AR can keep the environment out for longer, but the shit WILL eventually ingress, and once it does you will need to really get in there and give it a good cleaning.

Another factor is lube. An AK will run just fine with no lubrication (not that i recommend it). If you don't lube your AR you will pay for it. Not a huge deal, but something to consider.

None of this is meant to shit on AR's, they are perfectly fine and reliable in field conditions, jam-o-matic is a meme.
>>
>>31529786

what do you think would run longer after being completely stripped bone dry with rubbing alcohol, and zero lubricant applied.

A AR or AK?

Depends on what you want. 5.45 is better for wounding and for more follow-up shots due to lighter case sizes.

7.62 for the dank one taps.

I've heard that the 7.62 is more plentiful, but you might be able to force a 5.56 to fit into the 5.45 breech (single shot).

7.62 is much easier to find drum mags for.
>>
>>31526718
how do you like the troy hand guard?
>>
>>31529971
5.45 wasn't designed to wound.

they just basically took the idea of 5.56 and slavd it up.

The fudd wounding meme needs to die.

The reason why it look horrible in Afghanistan during the 80's is because the muj didn't have proper medical care.

Sight in Distance?

I have easiest access to a 25 yard range.
With my AR, I sighted it in 1" low at 25 yards and was told that was the same as sighting it in at 50 yards.

Same true for an AK?

Does the AK front post just unscrew?

Does 1 turn = 1moa?

What is with the deal with the rear sight, if I put it all the way to the back it actually raises it, why?

I'm new to AKs, the windage is 100% spot on, the elevation is adjusted to 10 yards for poa=poi, it's like 4" or so high at 25 yards, currently. How do I sight in an AK?
>>
>>31531667
>What is with the deal with the rear sight, if I put it all the way to the back it actually raises it, why?

The lowest setting is the same as the 300m. That was the standard "Battle" distance they anticipated, and the commies were trained to aim for the naval at under 300m. It wasn't precise, but you had a pretty good chance of hitting a man's torso this way.

Also what cartridge? 7.62x39 and 5.45 are each different.
>>
>>31531721
Cool info, thank you.
It's a 7.62x39
>>
>>31531721
I found this:

Zero the rifle at "25 yards" on the "2" setting on the sight leaf and apparently that makes the "2" setting good for 25 and 200 yards (and be able to hit "the paper" anywhere in between 25-220 on that setting for the most part) and when put on the "1" setting you will then get a nice 100 yard shot (with Fine Tuning for the 100, he said. (But if you do "fine tuning" wouldn't that throw off your original 25 yard zero by messing with the elevation??). He said the "3" setting is the same as the "Battle Setting" (Not sure if he meant height wise on the actual sight leaf) or if meaning just accuracy).

So should I just sight it in at number 2 on the rear sight at 25 yards and then it will be sighted in at 100 yards on the 1 setting?
Yes, I know it's meters...
>>
>>31521816
Shit and out of spec. The only reason you get these is because all else was Korean. Avoid them like the plague especially if they come in blue plastic wrap.

It's not a meme, it's a pretty standard feature for most stamped guns, though it wasn't a part of the stampings on some Saigas.

It's not a biggie because you likely have plates on the inside of the magwell that serves the same purpose.

The dimples are what's "correct" for clones though.

It's a great rifle. DA's parkerizing is flawless, everything is nice and straight, the action is very smooth, and it shoots 2MOA easily.

The polymer furniture that it comes with is bottom of the barrel garbage, really cheapens the initial impression out of the box.

Mine is set up as a Polish PMK clone.
>>
>>31532767
Nah, I'm just messing around. The FOV is great.
Due to it's prismatic nature, it's extremely compact lengthwise while still being sealed. That's a huge advantage; no worries about your emitter getting mucked up as you would with an open reflex sight, and no bulkiness like a sealed optic which needs to be nitrogen purged (i.e. Aimpoint PRO).
>>
>>31533079
Sounds legit. Are you able to cowitness your irons through it?
>>
>>31533013
Looks sexy friend. I was thinking about getting one, if they ever come back in stock. Does it have good magazine lock up or favor some mags better than others? And is the weird looking brake it comes with effective?

Sorry for all the q's
>>
>>31533174
Na go ahead and ask, there really isn't much info out there except Bob Sled's videos.

Mag lockup is fine, a few of my Hungarian mags are hard to remove. Bakelite, magpul, and most steel mags fit well.

The brake that came on the rifle went straight to the parts bin and was never used. I put on a slant for the look. I'm sure it's fine though.

Worst case scenario: we get another really bad mass shooting (let's throw the lefties a bone and say it's a whitey this time) before election day, or worse yet before the final debate. Media goes 24/7 evil guns for a few weeks. Hillary reaffirms support for a new AWB, or a complete ban on firearm/ammunition importation.
