Looks pretty terrible. The majority of the "good" looking bits on this rifle are just artificially worn pieces (such as the edges of the gas block, the barrel rod, where the crapco muzzle brake meets the threads, etc.)

It's pretty autistic. You'd be better off buying a better rifle. Believe me: the novelty of having a well-worn weapon wears off when you coat it with oil a few times a week so that it doesn't rust.

I've got some coming in the group buy, but I always feel like I need more.

Truth is, I'm behind on ammo buying for the year (I shot ALL of my remaining .45 earlier in the month) and I keep wanting to grab another triangle folder and a dong for my 107. It got to the point where I briefly contemplated selling my ARs to cut out a caliber until I remembered what happens in November.

It's a closer cousin to the SG 550 series, but still relevant to AK owners.
I've been keeping a close eye on the development process and decided to give it a shot. May come back with initial range report in the next few days.

>>31508406
Yeah; I actually considered buying one recently but decided to get a handgun rather than another AK. It seems to me like they're being really receptive to feedback of the rifle and are actively trying to make it better, which makes me happy because it's a very aesthetically pleasing rifle. I'd love to own one someday, but I'm going to hold off a little longer because my meme gun budget is lacking.

Eventually I'm going to start stocking up on South African R4 parts. I really want to build an R4 clone sometime with as many original R4 parts that I can get my hands on. I've had a hard on for South African military history since I was like 13 and the Galil/R4 has always been a favorite AK of mine (even though 5.45 a best) of mine, so this is something I really want to do sometime over the next few years.

Personally, I think I can make it work. My original intention was to get a Norinco Hunter for cheap and do a ton of work on it in order to make it suppressor ready. The M10X is basically my end goal for cheaper, but also ambi (southpaw here). I'm going to treat it like a future dystopian AK derivative, and I picked out an optic which should compliment it well.

OK k I need some advice
I'm looking to buy a ak and I'm kinda stumped with all the options and variants
pls help me out
let's set the budget at ~$1000
a milled receiver is a must have
I would like a tactical setup as opposed to the all wood furniture for comfort customization and a folding stock is quite appealing
other than that a bayonet mount would be pretty rad
thoughts suggestions criticisms advice resources?
anything would help

Arsenal sam7
>>
>>31508700
already have a good assortment of your listed options, this was because I'm curious and also because it scratches a lot of my itches for a 7.62 rifle.
>extruded handguard
>long stroke piston
>ambi
>ak or SR25 magazines
>adjustable gas system
>furniture compatibility

If it's not to my liking I will either modify it or sell it, but I'll be sure to leave feedback with the manufacturer because as Nick said they have been receptive. First thing I would do as a designer is improve resilience to ingress of debris by putting a grommet in the path of the charging handle, as the SG 550 series has.

How much would it cost to convert a slant-cut 5.45 VEPR into a regular wood-and-bake AK74? Let's say I could get the VEPR itself costs 750 before tax. Would it just need a bullet guide and the slant-cut converter plus furniture/mags or would I be better off just going with something like an Arsenal?

I really like the heaviness of the VEPR so I would like to convert one.

>>31509043
If you can live with an unconverted forend, you would basically only need a stock adapter and a bullet guide. Both of those parts are relatively easy to fit, no need to send off to a smith.
IMO the long wood forends on VEPR rifles are practical and have a unique look. You could refinish or paint the wood to match your other furniture too. Completing the conversion on the forend (i.e. to fit AKM furniture) would likely have you at the same price as an Arsenal.
>>
>>31509655
The only iron sight for an AK that you will find that will mimic the AR15 sights is the tech sight.

Any "aperture" sight that replaces the regular AK sight leaf won't work anywhere like a real aperture sight. For an aperture sight to work it has to be close to your eye. The AK rear sight block is too far away for it to work like that. I don't know what the reviews on the tech sights are but they are pretty much the only product that will give you an AK rear aperture that's actually close to your eye. Except I guess for the TWS top cover rear sight but I'm not even sure if those are adjustable for zeroing.

I'd recommend just learning how to shoot with open sights and just accept it as part of the AK. No, it will never be as accurate as a good set of aperture sights. Look at the jokers who shoot M1 garands competitively. You won't be able to mimic that kind of accuracy with open AK sights. But love it or leave it.
>>
>>31510579
Wouldn't using some fancy math and adjusting the size of the aperture compensate for the distance away from the shooters eye?
>actually curious
>>
File: image.jpg (48KB, 1024x768px) Image search: [Google]
image.jpg
48KB, 1024x768px
>>31510579
Like this for example. Obviously you don't have the radius of a M1, and the whole setup wouldn't be as sensitive to the shooters adjustment, but the basic principle is the same yea?
>>
>>31510675
>>31510647
Aperture sights are most effective when the aperture is smaller than the pupil and work especially well when they occlude the space around the aperture (i.e. diopter sights). You could train yourself to use aperture sights without an occluder (as in your pic), but it wouldn't be much easier than open sights because you wouldn't get any help with parallax suppression. This is just knowledge and experience we've inferred from the behavior of the eye/brain, your mileage may vary.

>>31511045
That is actually an aperture sight! Look at more pics and you will see it is a peep sight. Open sights work best when the rear sight is away from your eye (see every milsurp bolt gun ever). Apertures work best close to your eye.

I'm going to go back to black polymer. All of the late Afghan war era stuff I've currently got on it is really cool but it just looks goofy when I put the Obzor on. Ill have to pick up a black side folder, but I'm not sure if I should just go with the black handguards and pistol grip the rifle came with or get a set of Russian furniture. A Russian set would only run me about $40 for the handguards and grip so I'll probably just do it because they're pretty inexpensive, but is there any real difference between the US made stuff and a Russian set besides country of origin and markings?

Also I guess this means I have an excuse to finally get my hands on a current 74M muzzle brake to match the black furniture. I could get away with my current faceted brake for now with it, but I'd want a 74M brake eventually.
>>
I've been thinking about getting a 74 for a while now, any of you guys with experience think this is any good for the price?

Bought some plums off AKfiles and one has something scratched into it in Cyrillic maybe? Says 1988 on top and 1990 on the bottom. Anyone know what it says or might be. Also says 948 under it

Considering it has the art and 69 on it too I think I'll hold on to it. I was mostly curious about where it may be from. Also has something on the other side that looks like it says "Benez" in although I'm not going to bother funding the Cyrillic for that
>>
>>31513731
Not really, just lots of late 80s parts. It was an interesting time with AKs, right on the verge of being modernized but also not quite being modernized yet

I could probably get something built with what I've got but I'm too autistic and if I ever did itd have to be as close to original and perfect as I could possibly get it.

The biggest thing about that mag for me is the trench art itself, I just love personalized things carved into them like names and dates and stuff like that.
>>
Since we're on about mags, one of these plums has a (4) stamp near the top, does this make it matte black? How different are these plums?

>>
>>31513823
Bruh, the Izhmash 1988 kits are calling your name

That Cyrillic character USUALLY means it's a true black however I HAVE FOUND BEFORE actual plum mags that have the "4" looking character instead of the usual "M" looking character.

Shine a flashlight through it to check. A true black will have ZERO light transmission. If you have a plum with the "4" stamp it is an extremely uncommon mag.

Well, I'm an idiot. Should've posted this here instead of QTDDTOT.

Is it possible to unfuck ban-compliant AKs, I.E. getting a bayo lug and non-pinned barrel again? I already own an AR and have a buddy in a free state holding onto an upper with evil features. State compliant AKs are always being sold at like $800-900 from shops and local private sales and getting a shop to do all the compliance work would be another $200/300.

I'd like a 7.62x39 platform for my collection and range use and I'm also willing to get an SKS if need be.

Galil and Valmet conversions are popular with that rifle because of how the receiver is similarly slanted. Look up some of that stuff, I'm sure you'll have some good ideas.

The ones with the Y stamp like that overlap production with the true blacks. The line is more blurred than people think. Some true blacks from around that time will tend to have a more rough texture. Some true blacks have a slicker texture like your average plum. I'm going to take a risky guess and say that mag is either mold 47 or 29.

I've got a black sidefolder coming in the mail, so only a few days left of plum and triangle before I switch over. Plum and triangle is cool but looks goofy with the Obzor, so I want to make the rifle look more proper when I'm using it and go for more of a 74M look.

It feels weird, I've had my SLR104 since May 2014 and I've had plum on it since June of that same year, and this will be the first time in like 27 months that I've taken the plum off.

I've gotta get an extended collar 74M brake, black Russian furniture (I'll stick with my US made black for now until a deal pops up), and a smooth dust cover. Anything else I should pick up to complete the 74M look?

Bruh there is nothing wrong with a WASR, I have a donger in the safe too. But what's your hatred of Arsenal all about? I doubt it's poorfaggotry or post-purchase rationalization seeing as you have a $1200 AR.
>>
>>31519448
>But what's your hatred of Arsenal all about?

It's a fucking stamped AK that for some reason commands the same price as a goddamn FAL, PTR or very accurate AR's. It's fucking ridiculous.

Meanwhile DDI, Cugir/Century and PSA make dependable, stamped AK's for hundreds less that perform good enough for the Kalashnikov name.

I was turned off by the price at first, now I'm just disgusted by it. Arsenal survives on nothing but dick-sucking for a product that doesn't match its out-of-the-park price tag with melting paint, garbage triggers and no fewer canted parts than other names.
>>
>>31519485
Show me a single 100 series AK that costs less than an Arsenal.

>B-build your own!
The folding stock and trunnion for it alone will run you $200-$300, plus paying someone to replace your rear trunnion and add on the little latch thing on the side of the gun that locks the stock closed, and there is an easy $400-$500 extra for the 100 series folding stock.

>>

Yeah, they get to charge more because the AK market is import-driven and royally fucked. You can't exactly go anywhere else to get something AKS-74 spec (yet). Adding the folding trunnion to a $600 rifle would bring the cost up to match.

I'm not blind to Arsenal's QC issues or shady business practices, I see your point here.

Ultimately we would all like to return to 2009 and the days of $500 SGL's. I wouldn't argue with you that an AR is the best value for anyone wanting a practical rifle in 2016.

All that being said, my SLR-104 finish is fine, it is not canted, it shoots about 2MOA, and the action is the smoothest of any stamped AK I own.

They used to be considerably cheaper, they used to ship free (at least their firearms used to all ship for free), they used to refund your FFL fees if you sent them a copy of the receipt, and they used to give you free Czechpoint pens, carabiners, and koozies if you asked for them when you ordered. I've got so many Czechpoint pens, carabiners, and koozies from buying stuff over the years.
