Can we get an optics thread going? I've been reading hundreds of articles and old forum threads about the pros and cons of various options but still can't figure out what I should get for my new AR.
>>
What range, budget(important), and intended use? Do you definitely want magnification?
>>
>>31497727
Budget: $1200
Range: 0-250yds, emphasis on 0-10
Intended use: Home defense, range plinking, SHTFantasy peace of mind, maybe some classes since I just did an Appleseed found it a lot of fun (got Rifleman patched too)
Weight: going on a 6lb AR build so I would like to not add more than 16oz if possible
Magnification is not a MUST but is appreciated so long as it isn't hindering up-close use.
Always-on or motion-sensor illumination is more appreciated yet for home defense.
Special: I have astigmatism, all red dots and holographics are fuzzy/starbursting

Currently list, very open to other ideas:
- Leupold VXR Patrol (1.25-4x)
- ACOG TA-44SG (1.5x green circle-dot)
- ACOG TA-33HG (3x green horseshoe)
- Vortex Spitfire (1x prismatic)
- Trijicon Accupoint (1-4x fiber/tritium)

I'm not Rambo. My first and foremost prep against a societal breakdown disaster is having passports for every family member and enough money on hand to buy a same-day plane ticket out of the country for each of us, and enough gas in each car at all times to get to the airport. Barring that I would be sitting tight if possible, or driving several states over to a longterm-stay hotel. It all depends on what exactly is going on, whether the dindus are restless or a train derails and leaking heavy toxic gas or the blizzard from hell or a civil war.

Most of those won't involve needing magnification on a rifle, in fact for the most likely occurrence of something that could fuck my world up--Cletus or Tyreese deciding to come on into my home--I would prefer to have none at all. But JUST IN CASE of that situation where I need to spot and id things a short ways out... it would be nice to have the option of magnification. And I'd like to keep training consistent instead of swapping out optics for different purposes. I hit the range as able and do dry fire but as said, I'm not Rambo, I need to make sure my training time is optimally used.

I wish I could, believe me. They're only useful at point-blank where the blur doesn't matter because precision doesn't (usually) matter.

Glasses and Lasik aren't on the table for me, the astigmatism doesn't hinder me outside of this so I won't wear the glasses (can't stand wearing sunglasses even) and won't risk the Lasik side-effects.

if your budget is 1200 you could probably even grab a vortex Razor, I nabbed mine for about 1200. 1-6x, 1x is beautiful on it and 6x makes ringing steel at 250 a piece of cake.

>>
>>31498170
The weight is a killer for me with it. If I wasn't trying to keep things lightweight I'd be all over it, but it's over 1.5 pounds even before the mount. Oof. Other than that it looks amazing.

If you have that much money to burn get an ACOG.
>>
>>31498294
Two of them are on my list! But I have reservations on account of them supposedly having a lot of trouble in low light conditions and close up (like one might expect to find in a home defense situation).
>>
>>31498314
Go 1.5x magnification. And what low light issue? It has tritium illumination.
>>
>>31497714

That nigger has a spherical weapon. Better end that dindu.
>>
>>31498366
Tritium doesn't glow all that brightly, even the green hue which glows brighter than the rest can basically get washed out in dim light that isn't pitch black, and then you have a black etched reticle that can't be seen because it's too dim to make it out and too dim for fiber optic assistance to the brightness.

1. Vortex Spitfire

Er, and well there is Primary Arms. But I think they can safely be disregarded from any question of "who is best".

Try the Leupold VX-6 1-6x then. Almost the same FOV, almost half the weight. The illumination isn't as good, and the good reticles are a little overly thick, but the glass and eye box/eye relief are similarly good. It has an auto-on motion sensor function too.
>>
>>31500392

Just got

https://www.americandefensemanufacturing.com/view/product/1248/

for my recent pistol build. I have severe astigmatism and this sight rocks. I also like that it takes common AAA batteries and that even if I have no batteries I still have a reticle. They run out of stock combo pretty quick but their QD mount is solid as hell and the price with the mount is what most places charge for the optic alone.
>>
>>31501429
How is the battery life? Does it have any auto-off or auto-on features so that a guy can leave it on a setting useful for a bump in the night?
>>
>>31501529
Per the mfg site:

" Typical battery life is 250 hours at maximum brightness and 3,000 hours at minimum brightness setting."

It has an auto shut off at 12 hrs. All you have to do to turn it on at the last brightness setting is push either button so even if you left it off at night you could get it on pretty damn quick.
>>
>>31501598
So which of those settings do you need in a dark house?
>>
>>31501623
The two lowest settings are supposedly for use with night vision, but the second lowest is visible to the naked eye in pitch blackness. I leave it on the third lowest because my house isn't pitch black everywhere due to street lights.
>>
>>31501671
Thanks, that's good to know. So basically if I turned it on each night before bed I'd get realistically 2 months between battery changes.

...Not an ideal setup but I suppose I could live with that.
>>
>>31501736
I also have a white light on my gun so that even if the illumination fails I can just fire up the light. but like I said it takes a second to turn on the illumination so it's not a huge deal either way.
>>
>>31501736
or if you buy this >>31501125 and leave it on the 6th setting it will be ready for low-light, naked-eye, 24/7, for two years. you don't need the first 5 settings unless you have NVGs.
>>
>>31501775
What part of "I have astigmatism so red dots look like fucking starbursts" don't you get? Might not be an issue if all you ever do with it is shoot at 25yds, but it's nice to be able to reach out farther with some precision even at 1x when needed.

I've got a Hawke Optics Sidewinder 6-24x56 mil dot on my custom 20" AR. Probably overkill but a buddy is a dealer and sold it to me at his cost of $300, retail is $530 last I checked. For me it's that I use top-quality ammo that even on sale is 1.5-2x as expensive as normal brass. My home defense rifle is also my range rifle so I don't want to be either burning up my supply of good ammo or be rechambering it repeatedly every time I go shoot or do some dryfire.
>>
>>31500841
It's good for all three of those uses; though tritium will never substitute having a flashlight or night vision.
>>
>>31501909
Can you use it WITH night vision or is the tritium too bright?
>>
>>31501906
I worried about that at first to, but I haven't had any measurable bullet setback in my HD ammo from multiple re-chamberings like some see in their CCW pistols.

I use Federal HSTs in my G19 for CCW and they don't seem to suffer setback either.

I used to measure my frequently chambered rounds often but after a while it became apparent I wasn't having an issue during the 12 months before I cycled in new ammo anyway.

>I worried about that at first to, but I haven't had any measurable bullet setback in my HD ammo from multiple re-chamberings like some see in their CCW pistols.
Well shoot in that case I guess I can relax. That's just with your handgun, or also with an AR? I remember reading something about the AR being particularly forceful with chambering a new round but I couldn't tell you where I saw that.

In my AR as well. What I'd do if I were you is to measure an unchambered round from the same lot as the one you will be rechambering and then remeasure the chambered round periodically to see how your particular round/gun combo behaves over time.

dont you need a visa for every other country first ?
>>
>>31502563
Nope, there's a lot of countries where we have travel agreements requiring no visa at all as far as visiting. If things are going truly tits up, I'll go there and then claim refugee status. It helps that the wife is foreign and while her home country wouldn't be optimal if the US is severely screwed up, it IS an option for her to sponsor me there. I do also have a visa for China that's good for another 3 years, as much as they gouge us to get it (other countries pay like $30, we pay over $250).

The big thing is having the passport, without it nobody is letting you into their country.
>>
>>31497714
With the requirements you mention, eotech with a magnifier is what I'd suggest.

ACOGs are the tits, but 0-250 there's no point.
>>
>>31502657
>sigh

EOTechs are fuzzy and unclear to use.

As far as the basic concept goes though, I've tried a friend's Primary Arms micro dot and magnifier before and found it to be a lot of extra weight for really bad quality of magnification compared to other options.
>>
>>31497807
Dont get the spitfire 1x. Its good for what its worth (came free with my upper). If you want a spitfire get a 3x. The 1x makes thing look (surprisingly) farther away
>>
>>31502719
How is the 3x at spitting distances? Since prismatics don't let you cowitness irons, this actually is really important to me.
>>
>>31502719
That hasn't been my experience with the 1x. It is true that this is a prismatic sight and not a red dot so its not true 1x. It's more like 1.01x. If anything you will notice a barely perceptiple magnification at super close range. Out past 5-7yds it is effectively 1x. You might have improperly adjusted the reticle focus if you're seeing anything funky like things looking farther away.

And I don't care about co-witness with my irons because if the illumination fails the reticle still works and if the whole optic falls to pieces it's on a QD mount and off the gun in a few seconds.
>>
>>31502743

Have you tried a single dot optic, or is that just from checking online? Just curious, because personally the smallness of an Aimpoint or other single-dot red dot never has posed me a problem.

EOTechs come with a host of other problems but no they are still sold.

>>
>>31505183
Okay, just as long as you've seen it firsthand.

Vortex Spitfire and Burris AR-1X are both 1x red-dot type optics that have a lot more stuff to their reticle. 3 rings for the Spitfire and a big ring with ranging info in it for the AR-1X. Both are way cheaper than the EOTechs.

There are some other alternatives too like ACOGs but those are expensive.
>>
>>31505255
I have. I'd like to see an Eotech first hand to be able to really compare, the pics i've seen of them online, seems a lot bigger than what I saw from the T1 in person. Thanks for the list of alternatives, anon. And an ACOG is on the list just way further down the road,

I bought pic related for probalby too much.
Schmidt & Bender Klassik 3-12x50 WITH some kind of rail directly on the scope, preventing usage of normal rings. Now I have to get a 200-300€ mount for it.

Anyone know just how old these are? Mine has "West Germany" writen on it, but that just means it was made before 1990.
Any downsides to old optics?

>ACSS reticle

The reticle that is SO sex, that even Trijicon licensed it for their ACOGs.
>>

That reticle is also really nice looking. Reminds me of a video game reticle in a good way.

Slightly different but same general concept.

It does the only review cons I've been able to find say it is kind of small to see. There is a retired SF guy near me that does course that recommends it. I don't know if he gets paid to say that so I figured i'd ask since this thread is up.

I find that for getting lots of reviews about things gun related, try googling the item in quotes along with either of the following:

>site:ar15.com
>site:m4carbine.net

So you'd put down
>"AR-332" site:m4carbine.net

You'll get a lot more hits that are relevant that way. If you want to then pare them down to more relevant stuff, toss in the word "review" somewhere, but sometimes you'll miss out on info that way too.

What is the difference between the fc1 and the eg1?
>>
>>31511251

I've read those site reviews. Spent a Saturday going through both sites a few weeks ago. Not on their forums as a member.

Thanks for the input though.

If it makes you feel better, I was trying to find info about the Burris AR-1X and there is JACK SHIT out there about it.
>>
>>31511543

I believe you man optic reviews are shit online. This ar-1x looks nice.

I have a a2 style upper so limited options.

If it makes you feel better your wpnsys is probably nicer than mine.

>If it makes you feel better your wpnsys is probably nicer than mine.
I have a PSA carbine with FSB and a PA micro red dot. Don't be so sure about that!

You know what though, it's enough to get the job done if I do my part. My weakest link is still me.

It isn't the gun that does the work it is the man behind the gun. Just practice. You can do it anon. You can do it.

No kidding. Who would you rather have at your back? Your choice of Jerry Miculek or Hickok45 armed with a stock High Point Carbine loaded with steelcased FMJ, or a random tripfag in /arg/ with their decked out $3500 AR-15 loaded with top-shelf BTJHP?
>>
If the eotech is 'fuzzy', and you need magnification below 250 yards, maybe you should skip the optic and see an optometrist.
>>
>>31511835
I can shoot with irons to 300yds no problem, to 400yds less well but doable. Just because I can get hits out to there doesn't mean I can identify what I'm hitting.

An optometrist would give glasses/contacts that I wouldn't wear since astigmatism isn't affecting me in my day to day life, or suggest Lasik that comes with a whole bunch of side effects. Better I just buy a useful optic that does what I need it to.
>>
>>31511801

PatMac he would probably choke me out to take my bushie for its old aesthetic look I'd wake up tto him cooking up some random animal he nailed in the firefight I missed telling me "evac is on the way".

idk much about the other two tripfags are cancer

S&B

Good quality, that company.

Downsides to old optics are that newer ones will be using newer techniques to make better glass.
>>
>>31511637
>I believe you man optic reviews are shit online
Depends, some companies like Vortex send their shit for T&E to a bunch of people so you get a lot of youtubers reviewing it.

Other people like DI Optical tell NOBODY.
>>
>>31511005
Only for the 4x version though, which annoys me because I'd totally pick up a 3x with it.
>>
>>31512390
Yeah the coatings companies use nowadays are really cool stuff.
>>
>>31507250
I tried out that exact scope mounted on a 5.45 AK, it was nice. The glass was crystal clear and looks much nicer in person.
>>
Hey guys, looking for a decent red dot and absolute cowitness mount for my first ar, i have 800 but I'd like to avoid spending it all if possible. Any suggestions? Also, are "reflex" type sights any good?

Steiner makes a good prism 3x or 5x scopes that are about half the price of acogs

No, it's just him. He took the pic with the camera extremely close to the optic.

The TA33's claim to fame is "long" eye relief. You should be shooting through it with your head as far away as possible.

Here, have a comparison between TA33 and Aimpoint PRO at the same distance from camera. Without the RMR on top, outside the tube is very open, BUT, the field of view through the tube is somewhat restricted compared to the 4x ACOGs.

slickguns.com and search for it. Or primaryarms.com

Oftentimes yes, but it depends on the exact offer. I can't answer that unless you post a specific link.

So maybe I'm just retarded but at 25 yards I'm shooting 2 inches low and 1 inch right. My scope has 1/4" adjustment increments per 100 yards and has an arrow for Left and arrow for UP.

How many clicks and in what direction do I adjust to get on target at 100 yards?
