You could go for one of the MI mounts and use magnified optic of your choice; they only look passable with modern furniture, but they're more squared away because you don't have unused rail space.

Keep in mind that you need shorter eye relief than an AR optic.

If you were thinking red dot, RS regulate mounts are pretty much top-tier (but pricy). MI has some novel options for MRO or Aimpoint T1/T2. Basically everything else is going on a rail over the dust cover.

Really just heat and personal preference. There are red dots like the MRO which have a huge objective lens which lends to better FOV through the optic, so people mount them further back. Dots like the T1/T2 have less of a FOV so it's more to put a dot in front of you and let your brain help you to see through the housing.

You might look into the "scout rifle" concept; that's where the doctrine of forward-mounted optics mainly hails from. See if that fits your philosophy, and if not you can go with a mount further rearward.

It's also super important to note that weight further out on your rifle is a more effective lever arm and will fatigue you faster. Good practice is to keep weight as close you your center of mass as possible.

Mine came with a few problems. The top cover was all scratched up right out of the box. And the lip around the ejection port was bent too far inwards, causing it to scratch the shit out of the bolt carrier and even hang the bolt carrier up if I let it forward too slow. I fixed it with a file but the bolt carrier is still scratched down to the bare steel from before I figured out what was wrong.
Other than that I love it. Never given me any problems.

I bought a milled DDI AK for about $900 a few months ago. Just make sure you oil it up before you shoot it; I was too excited to shoot mine when I got it and skipped that, but then had issues getting the bolt to close on the first round in each mag. Question regarding optics.

Are they really something that should be put on your AK if/when you're going to be running around and perhaps even running and bumping into a lot of shit? I mean, it almost seems counterproductive because it seems that the potential to bend the mount or crush/crack the lens is fairly high.

Would they only be good for long distance stationary shooting?

And on that note, what optics are good for my AK? I understand that good quality optics are fairly expensive, about as much as cheap gun alone. Is there a guide for price range and shit?

There's a reason pso/posp scopes come with two distinctive mounts for each rifle. Trying to circumvent it by having the wrong type of mount slightly modified to fit more tightly to, still, the wrong rail doesn't change it.
It still sits lower than it's supposed to for the type of rifle it's attached to, and blocks use of irons. Having to kink my neck uncomfortably to try look through the scope isn't acceptable to me. I tried it, believe me. It felt like garbage.

I'm not sure if that number is necessarily -meant- to indicate the year the gun was actually made or not, but it's generally a reliable way of telling. Another way is by checking the first two digits of the serial number. Most of the time these numbers are the same but I have seen cases where they are not, with that number being larger than the number on the front trunnion.

Lots of imported AKs are funny in that the stamped steel receiver is what is legally considered the receiver but the serial number is on the front trunnion.
